I HATE this book! First of all, I was forced to read it. No one likes that! Um...the title of the book...... So, I stuck a sticky note on it that read TEACHER voice. When do WE get one?
This book preaches to the choir. I teach elementary, so little of it really had to do with me at all. Most of the book is geared toward high school. So...why did I have to read it?!!
I want to burn this book in a pyre. It is condescending to any teacher who actually wants to help their students. It is meant for people in high places who make the decisions who haven't actually been in a classroom in years, if ever.
If you teach high school and have ANY freedom in choosing what you do, then this may be for you. If not, read something good. This was awful.
DNFed at 60% because I was borrowing the book (and I'd been borrowing it for the past 3 MONTHS) and needed to return it. It was kind of repetitive and dry; the idea is amazing and I agreed with the message that student-teacher relationships need to extend beyond grades and assignments, but I had trouble continuing it.
While the structure of this text is rather predictable and sequential, the notion of valuing student voice as integral to educating kids is revolutionary. All educators should read and find ways to incorporate these ideas.
This is a great book to read and share about student voice and aspirations! It is a must that we put this in place in our schools for our future. A MUST READ!
