When they decided to come out as a couple in the school festival... I died. I love greedy Yoi so much. I don't know, but I just like seeing her picking something for her own for once. That's fine, girl. Be as greedy as you want! Ichi is yours!!
love love this series’ art style, but yoi’s “relationship contract” is such a flimsy plot roadblock. but at least we have another potential couple added to the mix!
After Kohaku was an idiot, Ohji decided to be honest and straightforward, to Yoi’s shock. But, she made her choice and she and Kohaku get along fine, although Yoi’s ongoing issues with her image are causing more problems than usual.
Be advised that I firmly think every choice made for the leads in this series was wrong, so if you have come into this already enamoured of their relationship then you’re going to enjoy this more than my grumpy review would suggest.
Watching a heroine have her individuality stomped out so she can be “girly” like everybody else never sits well with me. I wish they’d just have Yoi run away and join the Takarazuka Revue playing male roles and stuffed her into the cast of Kageki Shojo instead.
When Yoi comments about feeling dissatisfied and frustrated, I’m with her 100%. The premise of this story annoys me and there’s a part of me that is giving it a brutally hard time because of how ridiculous I think it is.
At least if you’re judging this on the ‘hotness of the male’ scale you’re doing great. This manga loves its male lead and Yamamori’s art has always been on fire when it comes to looking good, so no shock there. And Kohaku is believably awkward as he tries to balance his hormones and cool side with taking things at Yoi’s pace.
Of course, between that dumb contract and Yoi’s decisions to not ask for anything or try to be a bother when she could and should be monopolizing Kohaku’s time as much as he’d let her, there are just reams of pushing back, coming together, and pushing back.
Yoi even tries to get out of that dumb contract from earlier and Kohaku won’t let her get a word in edgewise. Why? Because the plot demands it, that’s why. This is nothing new for shojo, but I expect better from somebody who’s done way better work.
From the ‘brilliant and I would say classic’ Daytime Shooting Star to the ‘reluctantly admitting it’s growing on me’ Tsubaki-chou Lonely Planet to this one, it’s kind of been a slippery slope for me with this mangaka. This is Yamamori’s most conventional tale and, ironically, least engaging.
Some of it is great! Kohaku’s apology at the start is especially great, even if his jealous ass behaviour is also grating. There’s a lot of brewing stuff with Yoi’s introverted friend Tone that commits the cardinal sin of making me think the story would be better if she was the lead over Yoi.
All the costuming, courtesy of the school festival, is fun and silly, though Yoi never sticking up for anything she actually wants persists even with the school pageant. So much of this story feels like her having a strop because she either won’t say what she wants or isn’t being treated like enough of a gender stereotype.
Sometimes the shojo vibe comes through and does what it should and in interesting ways. Kohaku might be one of my least favorite leads in a long while, he’s kind of a boar, but he knows how to close the volume with a bang, at least.
Like I said, I think I’ve had so many chips on my shoulder for this story that I could open a McDonald’s on my clavicle, so it does offer something for somebody who finds these two interesting. Sadly, I don’t as often as I would like.
3 stars - couple of banger moments and the usual art triumphs (although I prefer the mangaka’s earlier style still) keep it from the dregs, but boy I wish I enjoyed this as much as everybody else seems to.
Unfortunately, this was my least favourite volume so far. The art was still amazing but the storyline for the school festival fell kinda flat for me, even with the public confession. I liked the discrepancy in how Yoi wants Kohaku to call her cute but Kohaku is trying to not lose his cool over how cute You gets.
I loved that there was some focus on our MCs' friends, Shun & Nobara. Can definitely see them hitting it off.
I appreciated the pop references that the author has included in (almost?) every volume.
It’s difficult for me to rate this series. I love the art, I love Yoi-chan and her friends (and the Male Lead’s friends and his relationship with them!), but… the Reformed Playboy trope just doesn’t work for me. 😭 So much of their relationship seems to centre around the physical aspect, and I’m just… *headdesk*. Dude, if your past relationships were purely physical and they didn’t work out for you, mayyyybe don’t focus so much on that aspect with this one? 🤷🏼♀️
And to be fair, he is trying…but all while still trying to go further with the physical side. And it’s exacerbated by scenes that play into the “boys are animals with their desires” trope, which I loathe. (Dunno if it’s a translation thing? But super concerning if it’s not.)
*le sigh*
But the art is GORGEOUS. And I’m a sucker for pretty art. So I may give it a few more volumes and see? I don’t know.
Just…why did he have to be a playboy and Yoi so inexperienced? My Protective Auntie Instincts are Flaring.😭😭😭😭
“The more we care about each other, the more inept we get with our emotions.”
Aah Yoi, I should’ve known this day was coming considering how much of an overthinker you are. You are now officially the problem—congratulations!
Yoi was extremely frustrating during this volume. She had fallen into this terrible habit of saying one thing because it was logical and benefitted everyone except her relationship with Ichi, and then secretly wishing Ichi would figure out that she would prefer the opposite. How would he know? Poor guy, he’s not a mind-reader. Even I found it difficult to follow her logic, and I had direct access to her thoughts! The amount of times she did this really impeded on the enjoyability of the volume. And Yoi being self-aware enough to recognise that she had a habit of doing this and was the problem was actually not helpful. If anything it just pointed out the frustrating flaw of this volume even more (although it was pretty glaringly obvious, you couldn’t miss it).
And then you had Ichi who was also sort of feeding into Yoi’s miscommunication problem by letting her give mixed messages and not questioning her on it because if he pushed it then he would become a raging hormone monster. This was somewhat more plausible, but still weird how he was so upfront about it.
Naturally, this was a feast for the eyes, but that’s no surprise; 7 volumes in and that’s par for the course. It’s not as laudable an aspect as a good plot or decent character progression anymore. Although it was a treat to see Yoi in ODM gear!
Saying all of that, they did turn things around last minute and I liked how Yoi wasn’t only self-aware, she was also able to fight her flaws. So there’s a lot of room for improvement in her relationship with Ichi, but the last few pages were like a beacon of hope suggesting that there could be better and more communicative times waiting for Yoi and Ichi in the next volume!
That ending… ugh so good! I’m like Yoi and don’t want much attention on me but even I wouldn’t want to hide my relationship. Girl, that boy is yours. Let some biatches get mad LOL
And Tone and Kuwa??? Omg so shipping these two! I relate to Tone!!! I AM HER! Glasses, awkward and introverted…into my stories and not that much into the real world around me.. LOL.
This volume was fun, especially seeing Yoi’s internal monologue over the kiss throughout the book with hints of Ichi’s too. It didn’t make me snort quite a bit with the humour in this volume but I think the most notable change or rather addition is the secondary love story with the two best friends!! It’s funny because I’d seen a panel of the two of them on twitter and the art style of course looked familiar so I asked where it was from only for it to be revealed that it was this series (those two characters aren’t usually drawn in a lot of detail like in that panel which is why I didn’t recognise them. I’m so excited to see their story play out in the background, especially with the way it’s started (I couldn’t stop giggling it was so silly). Good thing that volume 8 is finally up for preorder and is coming out this summer so of course I preordered a copy.
Recap: Ichi apologizes by giving her a bunch of sweets, they KISS, school festival, Yoi cosplaying/dressing up, Ichi plays basketball, she shows up dressed cute and with a wig hoping he’ll like it but he tells her he likes how she normally is, they’re awkward, ending king contest where ICHI PULLS YOI OVER TO ANSWER WHO HIS SPECIAL GIRL IS.
I love how the mangaka captured the thoughts and emotions of young first love. Yoi and Ichimura are too cute. The ending had me gasping for just a few more pages to see how it plays out, but I guess we will just have to wait for the next volume.
I actually liked this volume way more than the last one. The last volume made me irritated with ohji but he seemed apologetic in this volume. Also, the immaturity fits the high school setting!
