Rate this book
In the shadows of Area 51's clandestine labs, the unthinkable has been creatures engineered to decimate armies now roam free. Driven by a scientist's ambition, these beasts defy the bounds of nature, but at what cost?

When ethical lines blur into oblivion, one scientist's desperate flight for survival awakens the beasts' taste for freedom. As they veer toward Alamo, Nevada, carving a swathe of carnage, the military scrambles to contain an error too fatal to admit.

Created to be unstoppable on the battlefield, these creatures are unbound by human constraints, sowing fear with their very existence. And yet, a child – innocent and pure – might hold the key and her bond with the “mon-ters”, as she calls them, might be the only hope for a beleaguered community.

Finally, a covert black-ops team is sent to eradicate the evidence. But in the grips of terror, it is but a handful of survivors who end up facing these creatures head-on.

Who will die?

Who will survive?

And who will wish they’d never been born at all!

Wasn't as good as expected.

Mon-ters by Kaye Bell is aptly named after a child's rendition of the word monster.

This is about an area 51 experiment that has gone wrong and the small community that is destroyed by this mistake. Three creatures 'escape' in what is a secret test.

Honestly, this book took me ages to read and was kind of boring.

I didn't put it down because I hoped it would pick up, but it never did.
There were no problems with characters, they were all likeable even the awful ones, there was just no growth and the anticipation that should have been there was absent.

Such a shame it had a good premise.

Great story

I enjoyed the story because it flows smoothly, and the m
Story line keeps you reading just to found out what happens next.
I enjoyed the characters and there rolls.
Can't wait for the next one to come out.

There was no such thing as monsters…

"mon-ters", by author Kaye Bell is a readable creature feature but only just. I will say that my 3-star rating is rounded up from my actual impression but I did finish it. Still, as we all know, neither the 'Zon nor goodreads allows for half- or even third-stars to be plastered to our willingly volunteered reviews. The reason - or one of the reasons better said - that my review isn't more positive is that sadly, this story contains absolutely no surprises whatsoever. I am not spouting my typical hyperbole when I say that anyone with a modicum of common sense could easily predict the outcome of the book from start to finish. It was never a question of "if" something would happen, only "when"! And this all packaged in a book that I wished had better execution, running far too long with far too many short, choppy chapters!

I’m already dead. I just haven’t taken my last breath yet.

I say all that hoping that - if you do dive in - the ungodly amount of clichés does not render your cerebral matter into unsalvageable mush! It even gets to the point where some of the exceedingly wide range of said overused aspects become even nauseating in their nature, especially when people find themselves flirting in the face of excessive gore and dismemberment. But shucks, what's wrong with looking down at your ex-wife's intestines when there's a hot chick behind you? No, it can't even be called foreshadowing when said attractive young lady says she always imagined living on a farm and wouldn't you know it, there's one just conveniently needing a female presence, complete with a hunky guy who has a nice butt and his adorable young girls! Nothing like the threat of being et (sic) up to get your libido pumpin'! Gosh golly gee!

This is a top-secret project by a top-secret sect of the government.

In fact, I hesitate to call this "horror" but don't have really another usable genre label that fits as well. Bell does at least populate her book with a wide range of characters, many of whom ultra-conveniently live with walking distance of… wait for it… Area 51 in Nevada. Naturally, a number of excursions, escapes and other escapades also involve Las Vegas which, as we all know, is a natural magnet for all things weird and unpredictable within the creature feature community! Unfortunately, this selection of characters is as standard as they can be and perhaps even more clichéd than the plot itself. Now if you want to talk character development itself, that would be a short conversation. But hey, if you aren't going to actually bring anything unique to the table, why mess with your formulaic approach?

What if a few eggs had to be broken or lives lost when it came to the greater good?

Oddly enough, I have read stories like this, albeit ones that I look back on fondly owing to their uniqueness. Most recently I'd probably cite "Frost Bite" by Angela Sylvaine as a comparative. However, while Sylvaine's story also involved a somewhat tried and true monster source - gooey alien bugs invade our brains!!! - she at least used her setting, namely the frozen tundra of winter-time North Dakota, as an enhancement to the overall tale. She also spun things so that they weren't taking place in the obvious locale of being right up against the world's most famous conspiracy-linked military base but also set them in the 90s rather than try and convince us all these things were happening in our modern-day world of instant access and 24/7 news coverage! Oh and things like infra-red trackers or heat-seeking whatevers and such, but hey, don't mind me with such silly ideas!

He had finally come up with a way to track them---he would just follow the trail of bodies!

But hey, if you're going to use the big, bad, hidden Dark Web version of the US. Military - or were they? - as your bad guys, at least here it's done at such a level that you can't help but wonder: if these are the superior forces, is our "normal" military really that bad at their job? It's truly a comedy of errors in how this entire scenario gets let loose - literally! - and watching the Keystone Kops run around trying to fix things is headshakingly silly at times in terms of execution. And while we're on the subject of same, it didn't help that the book was not better edited, as this only lowlighted the overall experience. Look, I'm willing to overlook a lot of things, but having characters change names and even sex at points is a bit distracting. Oh well, I guess no more so than titling your book based on a toddler's mispronounciation of "monsters". Had I been the young one (long, long time ago…) it would have been called monssers because goodness knows my fat little baby jowls took forever to start forming hard consonants! But I digress… and digested way more than I should have at that age…

What starts as a sci fi creature horror story becomes the story of survival against all odds.

Mon-ters is a well paced nightmare flight for a few small families and friends.
At first… no one knew what it was. They were up against something utterly alien to anyone’s understanding. A ruthless predator with unholy intelligence speed and only a certain few could guess at how or why it held a fascination & strange connection to a certain young girl..
Survival instincts kick in and it becomes both action adventure, chase and evade. An event for the ages. With innocence as well as enough gore and mayhem to satisfy the most hardcore readers of horror.
Will this desperate group slip the kill zone? Succeed in warning the outside world?
I enjoyed this book thoroughly. Watch out for more from Kaye Bell

DNF

I wanted to love this book, I really did. It’s an excellent premise, but it really needs an editor and proofreader. If there’s one thing that avid and experienced readers don’t like, it’s exclamation points in the narrative. If the quoted speakers are yelling or excited, maybe it’s okay, but nowhere else. In the opening sentences of this book it starts off with “…like something out of a movie. But this was no movie!” Should have been cut in its entirety, and the exclamation points just keep coming. If the author would go through the book and throw out every single exclamation point the book would be better for it. Again, good story, impossible for me to suspend disbelief enough to really get into it because my inner voice was constantly exclaiming.

Not enough monster time

Great characters kept me reading. The book was basically 90% human interaction. And I mean long worn out interaction. That left about 10% of the remaining for any monster action and it was rather tame. Not very creative creatures. Not much time spent explaining anything about how they were created. They just were just there. Only three. Not very exciting at all. Again, great characters but lame creature feature. Can't recommend this one. Sorry.

Different but entertaining

There were many times where I wasn’t sure about this book. I think creating a new creature is interesting, and connecting to a toddler was cool, but it was a one-trick pony. There wasn’t enough description to put its kills to perfection. There were also areas where action was taking place where words were missing. It caused me to stumble and lose ground. A common error with authors. I’d have to reread to clarify and fill in the gaps.

Over all, it was a good book and I would recommend.

you’ll need a seat belt to read this one!

A well - written, fast paced and believable story. I absolutely loved it. I have never said that before in any of my reviews so you may want to take notice. If you are looking for smart, easy to read and above average quality of content you will like this book. It isn’t like any others and what a refreshing thought that it. Just read it. You won’t be sorry.

A very different horror story . . . and so much fun.

I had a lot of fun reading Kaye Bell's book. The story was different and very imaginative. It took only a page or so and I was hooked. I will certainly be looking for more books by this author. Thanks to the author for sharing.

Review of this book.

This was an outstanding book. The story was excellent. It was believable. The ending was well thought out and believable. Continuity was great, as was the book. No grammatical errors! First one I have read in a long time.

A fun enjoyable read

I liked mon ters a lot, it is a fast paced story that I found hard to put down. It definitely has an old X Files feel to it, give it a shot I think you will enjoy the book.

Genuine creeps, Cecelia is wonderful, and the story hangs together although SPOILER: it tends to slip into the standard 'government experiment goes awry what shall we do' genre. Still, worth the time.

Nobody likes mon-ters!

Grabs you right away. There really are monsters, and they are fast and deadly. I love the little bitty girl in the book, and the budding romance amidst the horror. Hard to put down, so interesting as well a scary. Hope she writes more. I am very curious.

Good monster story

Enjoyable read with action and plenty of tense scary moments. The beginning is a little disjointed but it builds the characters. Fun read for monster fans.
