HEAU Hockey Legends #1

Saving the Beast

Rate this book
Contemporary fairytale retelling meets hockey romance Blair Adams's dreams are finally coming true– well, almost. Getting accepted into Happily Ever After University is like winning a golden ticket to guaranteed success if you manage to graduate. Having perfect grades isn't one of her problems; however, evading her narcissistic ex-boyfriend and having enough money to keep her enrolled are.

Griffin, The Beast, Hawthorne, lives up to his nickname on the ice as a menacing defender for the HEAU Legends hockey team. On the outside, Griffin seems to have it all—an elaborate mansion, endless funds, and a future written in the stars. But a poor grade threatens his path to the professional league, and unless he can fix it, he'll be spending the rest of the season on the bench, saying goodbye to his dreams.

Fate connects the two desperate souls, and without much of a choice, Blair begrudgingly agrees to tutor him. But when Griffin inadvertently costs Blair her job, he offers her a new proposal that is impossible to refuse. He'll pay for her entire tuition and all of her bills in exchange for one simple thing—move in with him until the end of the year.

With each study session and late-night kitchen run-in, the boundaries they initially set begin to blur, and they question whether it's their deal keeping them together or their growing affection for one another.

As everything begins falling into place, a threat they never expected emerges from the shadows—someone who will go to the grave before allowing Blair to be loved by The Beast.

As much as I love reading about hockey, I don’t think retellings are my jam.

I so badly wanted to love this one but it unfortunately wasn’t for me. I don’t think retellings are my thing. If you do love them, and want a cutesy rich boy x poor girl, hockey player x tutor, you’d probably enjoy this!

I was torn between four and three stars for a little bit. This book is very cute and I loved Beauty and the Beast, so take my favorite Disney princess movie and make it into a hockey romance and I am running to it. I liked a lot of things about this book. I thought the characters were great, they had depth and development, which is something that is typically lacking in the fluffier of romances books.

I thought Griffin "The Beast," was a great portrayal of his Disney inspiration. While he may not be royalty, he came from a very wealthy family that he lost tragically and is the King of Hockey. He has that gruff exterior that you expect from the Beast, but of course his soft side only comes out when he is around his Beauty, Blair. I loved how fiercely loyal he was to his people and how protective he was of Blair. I will give the character of the Beast five stars.

This is a very slow burn! I mean they don't friggin kiss until you hit around page 300. I thought the book wouldn't have much substance before they finally gave in to their feelings, but it actually really helped build that anticipation for the moment because once the dam bursted, it FLOODED! I loved all the delicious tension that built up between them for 300 pages finally boiling over.

All that being said, there are definitely things that I wasn't crazy about. I found the writing to be a bit more on the redundant side and gave me some wattpad vibes. Obviously there is nothing wrong with wattpad, but Pru is a very well established author. If this was her first book, I wouldn't think twice about the writing style cause we all have to start somewhere, but this is far from her first book. The thing that is sticking with me and kind of pissing me off. Just moments after all that shit happened with Grant at the bell tower, they are shooting the shit and laughing like something traumatic did not just happen. I understand this is not a dark romance, but give some emotion after being FUCKING KIDNAPPED AND HELD AT GUNPOINT other than giggling and making out.

It was a sweet book and a decent retelling. The thing I loved almost as much as Griffin was the art in the book. That was so just adorable. Even the chapter pages were cute as hell.

Spice: 🌶️

Pru has done it again!!! She’s definitely the unspoken queen of writing sports romance and especially hockey. I was just so enthralled by Saving the Beast and everything that Griffin and Blair bought to the table. It’s a modern retelling of Beauty and The Beast which is easily one of my favorite fairytales ever. She did it so justice and I totally loved her spin on it.

It’s a tutor x student romance also which immediately makes me think of Naley from OTH. Also the fact that she’s the needy girl who no one brings attention to and he’s the popular rich jock who everyone seems to love. There’s definitely a dislike for Griffin from Blair’s side at the beginning mainly because she feels he’a just this rich sport jock that’s got everything. But as she tutors him and eventually moves in with him as his full time tutor she slowly sees a new side of him, a more vulnerable side that she definitely didn’t expect he had.

His past was just so devastating and I definitely teared up at times. I truly think that the name The Beast that he was given by his hockey team was also a reflection of how he felt inside because of everything that had happened to him as a child. But I’m so glad that he had people like Mrs. Potts and Chip by his side because like he said otherwise he would have been completely lost. I totally loved how Pru used the names from the OG fairytale in the book. Such as nicknaming Griffin and Blair Thea Beast and Belle and naming Griffin’s household help and Blair’s best friend Mrs. Potts, Chip and Lumi. It was all around such a great romance and I’m glad I got to read it!

Thank you Pru for the ARC 🥰

🕯️ What to expect:
— fairytale retelling
— beauty and the beast
— college hockey romance
— tutor vs. student
— roommates
— slow burn
— rich boy vs. poor girl
— reverse grumpy sunshine
— golden retriever mmc
— he falls first
— endless tension
— no third act breakup
— takes place in a huge mansion

Not currently done with the ARC I received but I can genuinely say I haven’t enjoyed a book like this in a while. I feel fully immersed in the world that Pru Schuyler has created. I’m loving it so far!

I’ve loved the books I’ve read the past couple of months but I haven’t truly enjoyed a book like I have this one. Little bits and pieces were taken from the original story and twisted into a modern way. I really enjoyed seeing some of my childhood grow with me in a way.
Just when you think the story is on a mild road, it changes in an instant. It kept me wanting more.
I loved how this whole story was put together. It really stands alone as its own book but also pulls the different aspects from the og. It definitely keeps you wanting more from the moment Blair and Griffin meet.
As soon as I seen this book starting to be advertised, I knew I needed to read it asap. I’m so grateful to have been chosen for this ARC. It truly didn’t let me down.

Who doesn’t enjoy a Beauty and the Beast retelling? And if I tell you the main character plays hockey? Would you be down to read it? If you do, then you should definitely read Saving The Beast by @prushuylerauthor 💜

First thing first, I want to thank Pru again for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review✨

📖 Blair’s dreams are finally coming true and getting accepted at the university of her dreams feels like winning a golden ticket. Having perfect grades isn't one of her problems; however someone from her past seems to threaten her new reality.

Griffin, also known as The Beast on the ice, is a defender for the HEAU Legends hockey team. On the outside, Griffin seems to have it all, but a poor grade threatens his path to the professional league, and unless he can fix it, he'll be saying goodbye to his dreams.

Fate connects the two desperate souls, and without much of a choice, Blair accepts to tutor him. But when Griffin inadvertently costs Blair her job, he offers her a new proposal that is impossible to refuse.

With each study session and late-night kitchen run-in, the boundaries they initially set begin to blur, and they question whether it's their deal keeping them together or their growing affection for one another. As everything begins falling into place, a threat they never expected emerges from the shadows-someone who will go to the grave before allowing Blair to be loved by The Beast.

So here’s the thing… unless you want to find yourself sobbing your eyes out in front of everyone I recommend you to not read this book at the beach, trust me, I’ve been there, done that (I think everyone who saw was judging very hard by the way they were looking at me😂). It’s heartbreaking, Griffin’s backstory was painful to read and the fact that he felt responsible for it all it completely destroyed my heart into a million pieces. If you like a touch her and you 💀 vibes then you’ll definitely enjoy this one! I loved Blair, she was smart and her work ethic was incredible. She would anything to help the people she loves and that was fantastic.

Their romance was genuinely kind and respectful, even when they’re threatened by someone from Blair’s past, they don’t give up and that shows how deep and dedicated their love is.

I am a HUGE lover of Beauty & the Beast retellings, and this one made me so happy! 🥹💛

Blair carries the weight of trying to pay for her tuition to Happily Ever After University after only receiving a partial scholarship. Not wanting to stress her father out, she gets a job as a bartender at a strip club to help pay their bills and her tuition. She is tried but still managing to keep her grades up. Everything changes when college hockey royalty, Griffin Hawthorne, bribes her into being his live-in tutor.

I seriously adored Blair & Griffin!! The slow burn tension was great and when the spice hit, it really freaking HIT. 😮‍💨🫠

There is an underlying note of grief and sadness that really broke my heart when you get to the core of this story. Griffin is there for Blair when she needed him, and she is there for him.

I seriously felt so many emotions reading this story. The story was so well developed and it left me so excited for future books in this world! This is my first book by 𝐏𝐫𝐮 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐮𝐲𝐥𝐞𝐫 and it definitely won’t be my last! I can’t wait to read her backlist.

This was such a sweet call back to one of my absolute favorite Disney princess movies!
It makes me even sadder to have missed the Beachside Book Fest!
But luckily Pru offered to ship my books when they come in ❤️❤️❤️

When I very first heard of this story, I was slightly concerned that the MMC, Griffin, was going to be as spoiled as he was in beauty and the beast, but I am happy to report that Pru gave him a far more depth than any previous incarnations of the beast.

Our FMC, Blair, is definitely more outspoken and outgoing than the Disney classic as well. Pru took away her father‘s babbling and general, lack of authority and capabilities, instead making him sick.
To me that was a vast improvement because I didn’t really like how the old version just kind of made him seem like this bumbling old fool it was so busy tinkering he didn’t notice that he and his daughter were living in poverty.
Instead, father and daughter love each other and our devoted and sacrifice greatly for each other trying to build a better life together.

And I also loved how Gaston/Grant was so insidious. Weird to love that? Maybe. But I always thought Gaston was kind of reasonable in the Disney classic and he didn’t seem villain enough to me. So, I actually enjoyed seeing a version that gave me strong feelings of disgust and anger.

All in all, it’s a really fun book and I’m so excited to read the second one

A modern Beauty and the Beast retelling but make it a Hockey Romance! 𝑺𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑩𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒕 was an immediate yes from me and it absolutely delivered. There is something so special about seeing your favorite childhood fairytale reimagined. I truly loved this fresh spin on such a classic while keeping so many nods to the magic and heart of the story. ✨💛

Blair + Griffin were great characters. Both are relatable, charming, and complimented each other well. I enjoyed their chemistry and was rooting for them the entire book. The pacing and the slowburn of the developing romance really added to the story. The tension between them had me giddy and kicking my feet with every little interaction. And that first kiss?! The. Sweetest.

Griffin was a solid MMC and truly a man obsessed. The touch her and 💀 vibes were immaculate. Blair was a wonderful FMC. She was smart, strong, and kind. I loved the way she helped Griffin heal from his past. They were perfect together!

The character art throughout the book was incredible. It really enhanced the reading experience! Overall, I loved this book and would recommend it!

Pru Schuyler is now an auto buy author for me! This retelling was so much fun to read, with just enough nods to Beauty and The Beast that it felt like a scavenger hunt but still an original story. I loved the hockey elements and how they were incorporated, as well as Griffin's entire disposition. I love a man at the mercy of a woman, especially when he has a possessive side. It was HOT.

I liked how the story loosely followed the original, most characters were represented but not always in a super literal interpretation. I thought the way Mrs. Potts and Chip was incorporated was a fun touch, as well as Cogsworth being the coffee stand Blair frequented. The friend groups definitely had me on the hook for more and I am DYING for what's next. Come on, Pru! We need breadcrumbs!!!

Overall, Yes. Just yes. Give me more of this series and fun retellings. I loved the flow of this book and how it carried act to act, and the characters were probably my favorite part. The length was perfect and the setting was a lot of fun! I will definitely be reading the Nighthawks series ASAP and looking forward to what Pru writes next!

Oh my gosh, I LOVED this book.

Beauty and the Beast has been my favorite fairytale for my whole life and hockey is my favorite sport. Put them together, you’ve got a book that I was already in love with by the end of the first chapter.

There was so many nods towards the original story that I absolutely adored, but they were done in a way that still felt unique to this story. The character art in some of the chapters was so cute too.

The extra bit of suspense in there caught me by surprise and had me wishing I could speed read so I could find out what happened sooner.

I loved all the characters that you’re meant to love (all the middle fingers to the one who deserves it). The text banter between Griffin and Blair had me cracking up and I thought the way their relationship developed was perfect.

I highly recommend this book and cannot wait till the next one comes out.

Beauty and The Beast is my favorite Disney movie. I was nervous going into this retelling because it had a lot to live up to. Pru did it justice!! I love Griffin with my whole heart, grumpy only when it comes to the people he loves. He also deserves the biggest hug.
Blair is such a sweetheart working her bow off for her and her father.
Griffin falling first made my heart swell!! And the confidence that grew in Blair really made me love her.

I hope we get to see more of them in future HEAU books.

ARC REVIEW- this was a cute little story mirroring beauty and the beast. This was only my second fairytale like book and I enjoyed it. It was definitely a slow burn and sometimes those are hard for me to read because I want the dirty details 🤣. The spice was on the milder side but when it appeared it was 🔥 if you’re into fairytale spice books, give this one a read!!

Very cute and quick read

4/5 This was a fun time, it felt like it was a really fast read too! I was kicking my feet and punching air. The only reason it’s 4 stars is because a few moments felt off. I was expecting more of a punch in the gut and it never came. Still, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a fun romance

Thanks so much to the author for providing me with an ARC of this book.

This was a really sweet and different take on a fairytale retelling of Beauty and the Beast. It had a lot of super cute details, such as the FMC’s best friend being named Lumi (e.g., Lumiere), and the MMC’s staff including a woman named Mrs. Potts and her son Charlie, who goes by the nickname Chip.

The story is mostly light and fun, a quick read. There are some elements of stalking, harassment, kidnapping, and minor violence (all related to her ex), so please check the trigger warnings before reading.

I loved the tutor aspect and I’m always a fan of a hockey romance. 🥰

Some aspects of the story seemed a bit surface-level or underdeveloped, and there were some parts that felt a bit unrealistic. However, it didn’t detract significantly from the overall story and it was still a very enjoyable read.

Blair and Griffin ♥️

I’m going to be honest and say that this book took some warming up too. It was written in a way that I haven’t read before and that is not a bad thing but it took some time to get use to the way it was written. I really loved Blair and her spunk and really loved the team!! I think the Beauty and the Beast references were great. I have such a soft spot for Chip and the side characters (Lumi and Malik specifically)!! I’m so excited for Malik’s book because this man is so funny!! His one liners took me out, but also how much of a bromance he has with Griffin was done so well and their relationship is so special!! Blair and Griffin were very slow burn but very appropriate with the premise of the book and the building of trust that they both had to have in each other. Also can I just say his story and his grief were probably my favorite moments of this book, it was a little twist on the original story and I really appreciate how she reacted and let him have space but also he realized that his actions really hurt her and they make up in a beautiful way!

Book Review: “Saving the Beast” by Pru Schuyler

Tropes: College Hockey, Tutor x Jock, Beauty & the Beast Vibes, Forced Proximity, Roommates to Lovers, Slow Burn + Spicy (2.5)

“Saving the Beast” by Pru Schuyler is a modern retelling of the classic “Beauty and the Beast” fairytale, set against the backdrop of a college hockey romance. The story follows Blair, a hardworking student struggling to pay her way through Happily Ever After University, and Griffin Hawthorne, the college hockey star who bribes her into becoming his live-in tutor. This slow-burn romance is packed with tension, spice, and emotional depth, making it a compelling read for fans of both sports and fairytale-inspired romances.

Blair is a relatable and strong female lead who balances her studies, a job as a bartender at a strip club, and her financial struggles with grace and determination. Griffin, the brooding, intense male lead, carries the weight of a tragic past, making him the perfect modern “Beast.” Their chemistry is undeniable, and the slow burn of their relationship keeps readers on the edge of their seats, eagerly awaiting the moment when their attraction finally ignites.

The book beautifully captures the essence of the “Beauty and the Beast” story while adding a fresh twist with the college hockey setting. The forced proximity of their living arrangement, combined with their tutor-jock dynamic, creates a tension-filled environment that gradually melts into a deep, emotional connection. The spice level is just right for the story, enhancing the romance without overshadowing the emotional growth of the characters.

Schuyler’s writing shines in the way she develops Blair and Griffin’s relationship. The text banter between them is witty and entertaining, adding a light-hearted touch to the otherwise intense storyline. The author also does an excellent job of weaving in themes of grief and healing, particularly through Griffin’s journey as he learns to open up to Blair.

The secondary characters and nods to the original “Beauty and the Beast” tale are delightful, adding layers of charm and nostalgia. The character art sprinkled throughout the book is a nice touch, making the reading experience even more immersive.

“Saving the Beast” is not just a romance but a story of two people finding solace in each other amidst their personal battles. Blair’s kindness and strength help Griffin heal from his past, while Griffin’s protectiveness and loyalty give Blair the support she desperately needs. Their relationship is a perfect blend of passion, trust, and deep emotional connection.

For readers who love a good slow-burn romance with a touch of spice and a strong fairytale influence, “Saving the Beast” is a must-read. Pru Schuyler has crafted a story that is both heartwarming and heart-wrenching, with characters that will stay with you long after you finish the last page. Whether you’re a fan of college hockey romances or “Beauty and the Beast” retellings, this book delivers on all fronts. Highly recommended!

I loved this book so much that I loved every little hint of Beauty and the beast there was! There were so many plot twist like Grant (fuck him), her dad's cancer and Griffins family death. I loved lumi so much And did a good job of representing Lumiere, and I could totally see Lumiere being that gay best friend like Lumi. I wish there was a character like cogsworth because I feel like he would have been fun. I loved Mrs Potts and chip they were so cute! I wish there was a little bit more of them tho but it's OK! I loved how Malik was such a good friend to Griffin because if Griffin needed him he was there PERIOD! One thing I did hate (not about the book but like a scene yk) was when she was fired like I get there's like policy and shit but what the fuck?! She was just kicked out like let her at least go to the back and grab her shit like the fuck! But that and any part with Grant was what I hated. Now onto blair omg Blair was so in her own bubble at the start but I'm glad Griffin opened her up! (Literally ;] ) One thing I didn't like is how girl didn't want to deal with Grant he was literally harassing her, and she didn't do anything! But it's OK because she kind of dealt with it at the end. And Griffin omg Griffin is like a cute guard dog he protects but also is loveable! It's so sad what happened to his family and the fact that he blames himself but I'm glad Blair was able to make him realize it's better to remember them then for him to forget about them! They are so cute together and the fact he would do anything to protect her!
GRANT AHHHHHHHHH I FUCKING HATE HIM SO MUCH LIKE AHHHHH!!!! He is a phyco he needs help because he was so fucking creepy! Like why is he always around Blair he was such a stalker and the fact her posted the video of her dancing is an ass hole move, and idk why he expected her to love him after that! And then at the end when he fucking grabs her and tries touching her!? Like ew no sir! But like fr? Where was anyone in that library? But the bow! When he said "I never liked these anyways" I'm just like bitch get the fuck out of here! I'm just glad Blair kept her cool and didn't freak out. GRANT GOT WHAT HE FUCKING DESERVED HE DESERVED TO BREAK HIS LEGS AND FALL OUT A WINDOW LIKE FUCK HIM!!!
I do think I learned some stuff about hockey throught this book very interesting I liked when it was very intense moments! Oooo and I loved the pictures in the book. I think it adds to the story! Personally, I'd like to see more, but I don't mind the amount there was, but you know never can go wrong with more! But 10 out of 10 books. I loved it so much, and I'm definitely going to be one of my favorite books for a while and can't wait for the next one!!!!

I was lucky enough to receive as an ARC 🥰

Saving the Beast by Pru Schuyler is a delightful blend of contemporary fairytale retelling and hockey romance, weaving together the classic elements of "Beauty and the Beast" with the thrilling world of college sports. This novel captures the heart with its enchanting narrative and endearing characters, making it a must-read for fans of both genres.

Blair Adams is a determined and intelligent young woman who has just been accepted into Happily Ever After University (HEAU), a prestigious institution promising guaranteed success for its graduates. While her grades are stellar, Blair struggles with the challenges posed by her narcissistic ex-boyfriend and the financial strain of keeping herself enrolled. Her dreams are within reach, but obstacles threaten to derail her journey.

Griffin "The Beast" Hawthorne is a formidable presence on the ice, playing as a defender for the HEAU Legends hockey team. Despite his outward appearance of having it all—a luxurious mansion, unlimited funds, and a bright future—Griffin faces his own hurdles. A poor grade jeopardizes his path to the professional league, putting his dreams in peril.
Fate brings Blair and Griffin together, and Blair reluctantly agrees to tutor Griffin to help him improve his grades. However, when Griffin inadvertently causes Blair to lose her job, he proposes an arrangement: he will cover her tuition and bills if she moves in with him until the end of the year. This unlikely deal sets the stage for a blossoming relationship that neither of them anticipated.

OH. MY. GOD. I am OBSESSED!!!!!!!!

I started the book only because the cover was super pretty, so I dived into the book without reading the blurb, but oh boy did I enjoy the book. I finished it in one sitting (and got super grumpy when I was interrupted). It’s a short book (276 pages) but has proper developments and is not rushed.

I did not know that the book was a fairy tale inspired book and the whole time I was like, omg this whole setting is so much fairy tale coded. Everything about this book was top notch. From the characters to the setting to the development, EVERYTHING.

And I have to say that I have found my new book boyfriend 👉🏻👈🏻 Griffen is the PERFECT man!!!! I mean he can bake, looks super handsome, is super protective and he literally WORSHIPS Blaire. His whole personality was 😩😩 (ykwim?) His relationship with Mrs.Potts and Chip was really heartwarming 🥰. I loved how even though he was filthy rich he wasn’t arrogant, he was pretty humble.

I loved Blaire’s character so much. She had a strong, independent personality. Reading about her struggles made me grateful for whatever I have ❤️. Her character was sassy and cute !!!!! Her sense of responsibility was kinda inspiring to be honest. Her and her dad’s relationship was soo cuteee!!!!!

Griffen and Blaire are my new favourite couple!! 🫶🏻 🫶🏻 They literally acted like married couple even before getting together.

You know why I LOVED and ADORED the book? It’s because it has good ol’ nightmare scene and it has freaking ILLUSTRATIONS in the book!!!! How cool is that!!!??

Oh and as always a character that I absolutely ADORED: Lumi, he’s such a girl’s guy. He was the best side character. I also loved Malik’s character. I agree he was an a** in the beginning but he grew on both, me and Blaire.

and a character that I absolutely hated: Grant. He is such a creep and I am joking when I say I thought I was reading some true crime shit during a particular scene.

P.S. I might have found my new favourite author and my new favourite book 🥹

My Thoughts
Beauty and The Beast is my all time favourite Disney movie so straight away I knew I was going to love the storyline. ALSO DISNEY x ICE HOCKEY - MY PERFCT BOOK!!!

Griffin Hawthorne is a confident hockey player who has a hidden past that not many people know about. When I learnt about Griffin and his family I could not stop crying!! It was so sad and not what I was expecting. Please keep the tissues handy!!!!

I loved everything about Blair too!! Her past was so annoying and I loved that Griffin was there to protect her. She was there for him as well especially when it came to him being vulnerable with her.

I loved how she called him "warden" and he called her "his little prisoner". so so cute!!!

THIS BOOK WAS SO ANGSTY AND THE TENSION!!!! It is a slow burn book but it was so worth it in the end!!!

I loved the little Beauty & The Beast easter eggs like Mrs Potts and Chip and the fact that she had to go and move in with him. The fact that she loves roses!!! Also, I loved how this book was respectful when it came to the autism rep.

Overall, I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS BOOK and I am so excited for the rest of the series and to see which fairytale retelling is next.

Thank you to Pru for kindly sending me this arc to read and review. This review is my own honest opinion on the book :)
