MF/Serial Killer/Captive/ Don’t worry, Doll. You’ll taste heaven before you walk with the dead.
Was I dead? I had wanted to die. I remembered deciding that I was done with this life and done with the memories and ghosts that haunted me. I’d looked at the darkness below and prayed for it to swallow me whole. Spreading my arms wide, I stepped off the ledge and woke up in hell. At least, I thought it was hell. It was hard to tell anymore. My soul was ripped from my chest long before now, and my heart had stopped beating when the gavel banged, sentencing me to ten years in prison. So what was this place?
The man who had me must be the devil, and I was his doll. Solely there for his entertainment. I never expected the devil to be as sexy as sin and just as tempting as an addiction. Even in death, tortured, and used, I couldn’t be helped. I wanted him, and every depraved thing he did only hammered home that my soul couldn’t be saved. I always knew I was destined for hell.
Writing is not just a passion for me. It is a lifeline to my sanity.
I have always loved writing but suffer from severe dyslexia and short-term memory retention issues. I struggled in school while I worked every night on re-training my brain.
I was frequently treated like I would never succeed, and I found myself putting my love for writing on a shelf.
Even at the age of six, I found it easier to communicate with animals than people, which was a big reason why I was drawn to dressage horseback riding. I remained focused on my passion for riding until I had to step away from the competition world for personal reasons.
Today, my desire for writing and storytelling has been rekindled. I have published multiple books and will never let anyone or anything hold me back again. I am a proud romance author who offers my readers morally grey heroes, a ton of spice, epic journeys, and redemption stories. -Follow Your Dreams-
“What does it look like I’m doing? I’m going to skin you alive, of course.” “If you want to die, I can arrange that, but I promise you’ll taste heaven before you walk with the dead.” “Those were my choices: a wild hog, a poisonous snake, or a serial killer. It was there makings of a bad joke.”
I loved this book!
The book is told in two POV; the FMC, Alora, and the MMC, Greyson. I think the dual POV storytelling worked really well for the plot, and I was equally interested in both of their perspectives.
The FMC, Alora, had a difficult, traumatic past that affected her as a character, her thoughts, and her decisions. There were flashback scenes about her past throughout the book and I think those were really helpful for understanding her and adding depth to her character.
The MMC, Greyson, came from a different background, and some of his history was revealed through dialogue and by he telling about it to Alora. His previous studies were an interesting aspect, considering what he was doing. I also liked how some of his knowledge was incorporated into the story.
I loved the relationship development and dynamic between Alora and Greyson. There were some truly beautiful moments between them (“I am you” “You are me” “We are one”). And the spice truly was spicing! I loved the public scenes 🥵
There were some really sad moments throughout the book, but also some really funny ones that made me laugh out loud. Both characters had some really great one-liners that made me chuckle.
Besides the characters, the world-building also seemed interesting and well-written.
I’m not going to say a lot about the plot itself because I don’t want to accidentally spoil anything. All I’ll say is that I couldn’t put the book down and devoured it in one sitting. The pacing was good throughout the book — quite fast-paced but there were also some slower scenes that allowed more time to get to know the characters.
Perfect for anyone who enjoys dark, serial killer romance with lots of triggers.
Please check the trigger warnings before reading, your mental health matters!
I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review. Receiving ARC didn’t affect my opinion of the book.
My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/🌶🌶🌶🌶 When I say dark I mean DAARRRKKKK and completely unhinged! Greyson is the very definition of morally grey, and you can't help but love him from the beginning. Alora is every bit of sweet misery that Greyson craves and his obsession with her is palpable. She very much so is his little Doll. 🥵 I loved this book and it was the perfect start to this duet. I can't wait to devour book 2 of this duet!
Вимбачте, це було гаряче, брудно, до біса антиморально, але ніби задовольнило усі мої кровожерливі бажання на цей момент, принісши головній героїні справедливість
holy effing shit. i was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this duet and woah woah woah. brooklyn cross sister you are so dirty and unhinged... i liked you 🤭🤭 these characters were everything to me holy. crap. when i tell u i dreamt abt greyson for nights after i finished this book. just imagining a life where i was lucky enough to be alora 😭😭😭 brrrrr i love it so fkn bad yall i wish i could inject their story into my bloodstream 🙂↕️🙂↕️

Alora completely broke my heart. The grief, the exhaustion, the way she keeps talking to her sister at the grave… it felt so raw and real. I just wanted to crawl into the book and hug her. And then there’s Greyson — the literal serial killer. Like, WHY do I like him?? He should be horrifying, but the way he is with her… protective, intense, totally obsessed… I hated that I kind of swooned at moments. He’s awful, but he’s also the only one who actually sees her. The carousel scene… ugh. That one didn’t work for me. It felt degrading instead of sexy. That’s probably where it lost a star for me. But then Greyson saving Alora, showing up for her again and again, even in his dark, brutal way — I couldn’t look away. Their connection is so wrong, but also exactly what she needs to crawl back into herself. The ending stuck with me. Greyson doesn’t magically become “good,” and Alora doesn’t get some shiny perfect happy ending, but she feels stronger, and together they’re… something. Messy, dangerous, bloody, but theirs. And somehow, it works.
"I will kill everyone who touch you and burn this world for you" in beautiful atmosphere of New Orleans. Wonderful and logical relationship development. Smut scenes that make you squealing. Characters that have their development and logic. Organized sociopath - is my weakness. Perfection
Psichopatas žudikas pagrobia nabagėlę ubagėlę ir tampa jos "naujo gyvenimo" guru. Ir dar jis ją išrengia, nudažo dažais (jis menininkas 🤡), suriša rankas, užčiaupia burną ir liepia šokt ala stripaką bare?? Nesvarbu, kokio grožio ir turtingumo tas bičas, bet aš nuoširdžiai negalėjau to nuolat klyną besičiupinėjančio sadisto pakęst.
🛑 Check trigger warnings if needed 🛑 Ease of Reading ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Characters ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Unpredictability ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️ Storyline ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice ⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️ Over All Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is a dark romance. I feel like too many don’t read triggers when they have them and in turn blame the book or author… so if you think you may have any please read them first. The characters (Grayson and Alora) I believe have bumped their way into my top 5. Brooklyn has a beautiful way with writing her characters and their stories. You lose yourself in the book so easily. I read this book in just over a day, because i found any reason I could to avoid life just so I could keep reading. When the end came I wanted to immediately restart the book in hopes I missed something and would find it again on my second time through. It gave me touches of Unhinged Kain (another Brooklyn book you must read) which made me SOOOOO happy! This will be another book I will strive to get signed and added to my trophy wall. ❤️ Make sure you follow up with book two as it is just as amazing!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ 💭My thoughts: First off I highly recommend this dark spicy read, but only if you are in a healthy state of mind. It has many dark themes and spicy moments that I don’t think is for everyone. That aside, I really enjoyed this read, I finished it all in one day. It was fast paced and did not have a boring moment at all. If you didn’t enjoy Butcher and Blackbird, and are wanting something where the characters stay dark and unhinged throughout the whole book, this is for you! He’s a stalker/serial killer and he’s set his eyes on her. He comes into her life at the perfect moment and shows her that they’re two broken pieces that come together to become whole. I loved it and look forward to more 😍 “Other men would give you diamonds and flowers, but I’d rip the soul from a body and hand it to you.”
This book surprised me, I must admit. I love this level of darkness, this distortion that the protagonists had, and I found Greyson to be a unique and fascinating character. At first, I didn't understand his motives and even thought they were a bit forced, but midway through the book, when I understood his purpose, I became fascinated with him. Let's just say he was the thing that surprised me the most in this book.
The protagonist is sweet, and I cried with her and her story... but she was extremely submissive to Greyson's humiliations, and that irritated me a lot. Like, what was that carousel scene? That wasn’t sexy; it was degrading. That was by far the scene that irritated me the most and made both Greyson and Lora lose points with me. Aside from that, I really loved the book, and the experience was worth it. I’m excited to read the second book in this duology, but I also want to read more about Greyson and Lora because, honestly, I think they had more to tell.

Yet again, Brooklyn Cross has brought a man, a messed up vicious and sociopathic man, one with no conscience and no morals and we follow him as he does things that have you questioning the authors mindset but then, BUT.. THEN.. you end up questioning yourself, because no matter how twisted Greyson is or how evil he is - you can't help but love him! #HesMine
Then we have Alora, a girl with a story that will break your 'lil black heart! This girl is adorable, she has such a big heart that's going to waste and she's so bloody strong but she has no-one, absolutely no-one, but she deserves so much, she deserves to dream and who better than to help her chase those dreams than the upstanding citizen, Greyson!
An absolutely phenomenal read!
*I voluntarily received an arc and this is my honest review
This was such a damn fun read. If you’ve ever watched and loved the tv show Dexter then I’m begging you to read this. It was such a fun, thrilling, sexy, and yet heartwarming story.
Alora grew so much. She found herself and was able to truly forgive herself. Watching the way Greyson helped her see that it was okay to dream again.. what a man.
Greyson reminds me so much of a more fucked up version of Dexter Morgan. He was hot and funny. I would’ve been down bad for him so no judgment from me for alora’s choices.
There’s just so much to unpack in this story and it was paced so well.
An absolute action packed, steamy, sexy read. Check your triggers warnings and if they intrigue rather than terrify you… then give this book a chance because it’s worth the read
The title of this is perfect as you'll find out as you go along! The book is addictive to read. It flows so well and is easily read in a couple if sittings. Be sure to read the TW as this has many dark, bl00dy or twisted aspects that the reader needs to be aware if if they have a TW.
Alora, our FMC, I feel was very much a scapegoat in her teenage years and lost 5years to this in prison due to nobody being brave enough to come forward to tell the truth. Now she's out, she's still having to fight this lie even tho she's just trying to not bother anyone, live her life, and just... Live.
Greyson AKA "The Foresaken" (altho this is the one and only time we are informed and read about his name) is a very bad wolf in sheeps clothing. A true nightmare hidden in plain sight. The very definition of someone you truly do not want to cross or anger. The pretty boy that has darkness beneath the light. However, he's also the villain with that one soft spot for one person. And if you're that one person, he will move heaven and earth for you.
Greyson has an immaculate public image. He runs a bar with his best friend, Lennox, and are known as The Bourbon Boys. He also owns and enjoys running a perfect dog breeding business that supplies not only to loving homes but to the military and as service dogs, and he was also a quarterback. Now who's going to believe his after hours activities!!
I was going to add this as a quick FYI, but the methods in which Greyson disposed of the bodies is pure genius. It needed to be brought to attention as I've NEVER read of this, and I think the author is fantastic to have done it!! It will leave you thinking, it's so obvious... Why has it only just been written.... (or I could be late to the party and missed it somewhere else but for now, thank you Ms Cross!!)
The crossing of paths of these two happens by accident, as Greyson is doing his after hours activity and Alora is visiting her sister. She catches his eye but he's too late to stop her and his obsession begins from here..... Building from initially wanting to just hear her scream "beautifully" for him as he killed her... To then wanting to keep her and claim her as his own...
Both characters begin the book in one way and change due to the other. She brings light to his dark, and in return he helps her learn how to stop just surviving.
A modern day and a tad more bl00d thirsty Bonnie and Clyde but you can't help but be by their side and hope for good things for them.
I know the next book is out and I'm ready to pick this up. Its around Lennox, Greysons best friend, brother and business partner at the Bourbon Boys and I can't wait to see how this goes! I'm hoping we see see cameos from this starcrossed couple too!
A great story told with brilliant characters! I'm already a third of the way thru the next book and loving it just as much!!

Captivating, dark, deadly and twisted. Alora goes through so much and is trying to rebuild her life, but she can't escape her past or her demons. After reaching her limit she tries to escape and finds herself in the clutches of a new threat, Greyson. Serial killer, stalker, hunter, dark soul, and completely obsessed with Alora. Greyson has his new toy, and he wants to play. Alora is trapped in a twisted new world but she's drawn to the darkness and depravity, and the way that Greyson can truly see her, and finds herself feeling at home for the first time. They are the light to each other's darkness in an adorably deadly way, and Greyson is determined to help Alora, even if that means killing everyone who ever hurt her, or dares to touch what's his. Loved the chemistry, spice, tension and brutality.
💀"Alright, doll, game on. Ready or not, here I come"
💀"He had an energy around him that felt off. It clung to him like a darkness that was as captivating as it was fatal"
💀"For touching what was mine, he would die painfully, and for threatening her...well, for that, he would beg for his death"
💀"It doesn't matter who I am just know that I'm always watching you. You can't escape me. I advise you not to try"
💀"You don't see it yet, but we were made for one another, just like stars and a dark sky"
💀"I claimed you because the fractures in your soul alight with mine" "You want me because I'm broken?" "I want you because we both are, but together we're complete"
Wow, what a ride this book took me on, and I was here for it! The way Alora's character growth and storyline were set up was amazing, and it kept me so engaged with what would happen, especially how she and Greyson would meet. The things that Greyson does had my mouth on the floor. This man's heart warms up quite nicely after he fully gets what he wants from Alora. Now, I will sit here and stare at the wall. Also, please check your trigger warnings—this is a dark one
“you don’t get to check out on me, alora. if you want to die, i can arrange that, but i promise you’ll taste heaven before you walk with the dead.”
bloody quarter is another wild ride from brooklyn cross, and honestly, i expected nothing less. she has this incredible talent of giving us mmcs who are as morally black, unstable, and unhinged as they come, and greyson is no exception to that! every. single. time. she. never. disappoints.
alora’s life is a shattered mess—five years in a nightmare of imprisonment have left her scarred but determined to rebuild. her plans for a fresh start were on track until our serial unaliver mmc set his sights on her.
now, greyson is such a fascinating mmc. he’s definitely not just a one-note character. i found it very entertaining getting inside his mind and seeing things from his perspective. he’s a complex blend of charm and menace. he has it all and he is everything that we’re looking for in a dark romance hero—rich, mysterious, and dangerously captivating. he also has this messed-up sense of control and an eerie fixation on the color red. but what truly made me fall in love with him is his proclamations of love for and obsession with her (dare i say he’s a poet?) and also his unexpected tenderness towards his dogs! yes, ladies, he prepares healthy meals for his fur babies! who wouldn’t fall to their knees for this?
greyson and alora are total opposites. she’s homeless and fighting to rebuild her life while staying kind and hopeful, and he’s a serial unaliver who grew up in a loving home but turned dark. despite their differences, they end up balancing each other in unexpected ways. my girl alora has been through so much, so i was really rooting for her as she transformed from broken to fierce. the story alternates between their perspectives, delivering us all the intense details and a deep dive into their struggles and motivations.
their gripping journey and explosive connection (and his love for his dogs lol) make this book a 5-star read for me!
tropes:
• serial unaliver • stalker • captive/captor • primal/blood/breath/edge play • sociopath/possessive mmc
Alora and Greyson individually are the definition of unstable, but damn they sure do make a good couple. This story brought me out of one of the worst reading slumps I’ve ever experienced, and while reading Grayson’s POV I unlocked some dark hidden secrets I didn’t know about myself 😏
The pacing of this story was perfect. I devoured it in one sitting and was left craving more. I can’t wait to see what other beautifully unhinged men Brooklyn has to offer me.
I absolutely loved Alora and Greysons story. The character growth Alora goes through was fantastic. She goes from being on the edge to being a powerful FMC. Greyson goes into protective mode the first time he ever sees her. This story was dark and unhinged and I loved every second of it! I can’t wait to read Lennox story! Highly recommend check TW/CW
Shoutout to Jess for this amazing book. When I was promised dark, unhinged and smutty god did it deliver. It’s so rare to find a dark romance these days that has smut I’ve never read before, but this definitely had it! As a seasoned DR Reader my jaw dropped on numerous occasions and loved every second. Grayson Laurent has definitely made my list of book boyfriends. MUST READ!!!
Before I get started on this review, I feel the need to add an additional warning on top of the trigger warning. If you are squeamish in any way, don't read this book because it is gory with a capital G. The torture scenes are frequent and dare I say, unnecessarily graphic at times. I think even the most seasoned dark romance girly might be taken aback by it.
Onto the review. Spoiler alert, it's going to be a long one.
I'll be honest, I don't know if I enjoyed this book as much as the star rating is suggesting. Because on one hand, I did devour this. It's entertaining and smutty and for a lot of people that's all they really need and want. But on the other, the pacing was off and there were a lot of unnecessary scenes, some of which were so wholesome they gave me whiplash. That makes me sound like some demented person even Grayson would side eye but allow me to (try) to explain.
Starting off with the good, this story is really entertaining. It's smutty, has strong characters, and is a lot of fun (in a dark messed up sort of way). I like how even at her lowest, Alora has a backbone, and I like how Grayson is truly terrifying but still pretty hot. It's a hard balance to find but I think this book did a good job of it. Also, major props for treating people who are struggling with addiction like people and not automatically making the bad guy like a lot of books do. Seriously, you know who you are, stop it. The story itself doesn't have anything remarkable going on, especially in a market that is as overly saturated as dark romances currently is, but I don't think that's a bad thing. It just means the author is writing to market which no one should be penalized for.
On to my not so positive things and it's complicated so bear with me here.
There were a lot, and I do mean A LOT, of unnecessary scenes in this. I'm talking that if they were cut, literally nothing in the story would change. Like the whole chameleon thing. It was mentioned twice and added nothing to the story or plot. It didn't add to Grayson's allure, it just made him weird. I don't know why Sadie was here because again, she was pointless. I don't know why Grayson had to be a dog breeder because say it with me, pointless! Also, evil. That's right, I'm okay with him killing people, I'm not okay with him breeding dogs. I understand making a story feel lived in and padding, and I have nothing against a scene if it's there to add character development, but these didn't do any of that. They were just there to add to the runtime.
There was also a lot I didn't understand and it was never explained. Like Alora's blue hair. It's not like she could dye it in prison. Plus, she's homeless. Where was she dying her hair? Where was she getting it? This girl struggled to dip into her savings and buy a new pair of shoes but she was doling out the money for hair dye? Maybe this makes me sound nitpicky but her blue hair is mentioned a lot and never explained.
Another thing I didn't understand, if Grayson is supposed to be jealous, over the top possessive, all the red flags we're into, why was he okay with people seeing Alora half naked and c*ming on stage? Because it's not like he stays okay with it. He changes his mind pretty quickly. I would have excused it if he was looking for a victim but that wasn't it. He openly said he wanted people to see her but then immediately changed his mind. I didn't get it.
Final note, the wholesomeness of it all. Listen, I love seeing characters be a couple. I know a lot of people don't and find it boring but bump them, I think it's cute. But these two got to that point pretty fast. I'm talking by the 60% mark they were holding hands and making plans. I know there were weeks, possibly months of Grayson breaking Alora but we didn't see it so it feels like they just... happened. It's a weird flip because so much time is spent building this up. Nearly half the book is the chase that leads to her kidnapping. But then we don't see him break her. We hear about it, and know about it, but we only SEE him being wholesome and tender towards her. It's odd. Then again, maybe that's just how things work in the MF world. It's been a hot but since I've been here so what do I know.
Maybe these things aren't a big deal to a lot of people but do you see what I'm conflicted. It's an entertaining book and one 100% meant for dark romance girlies but I had a lot of questions I never got answered. 3.5 stars but I'm rounding down because I won't be reading the next book. I don't even remember the friend's name. Lori? Lawrence? Whatever. I'll see myself out.
Brooklyn Cross knows how to write a yarn. Shes one of those authors who does it so smoothly I can enjoy tropes I usually don't.
Like, "whaaat they aren't going to even interact like that or kiss until when 😳?".
Like "whaat is she really going to lick his 🩸cuz he asked & hes clearly pysch0, excuse me socio, & poinding into you 😳😲?".
Like "giiirrl did he really murk that guy and then had coerced smex right there 😳😲😬?" (Ok that might be a micro-trope i do enjoy).
Pearls clutched....mind as well call it a day and set the wedding date boo boo! And pretty pretty soulless Greyson you know good and well you won't murk her when you get bored. Stop the threats this is a dark romance not erotic horror. You have murked 3+ ppl in the first 50% bc they were mean to or about your girl.
#SerialMurkerMMC Greyson is a fascinating character. It was great watching a mature look at a sociopath fall in love. I appreciated the journey. There were no takebackises. He was cray from start to finish but his growth was amazing to watch. Greyson says the sweetest things:
📢What I really desired was to watch her eyes go wide with shock as I sl!t her throat. I hadn’t found anyone who could handle that…yet.
📢Sliding my hand down, I fisted my 🐓 and stroked. I’d been holding off for the right prey to f♡ck, but no one had interested me enough to make the effort.
📢No one except for the faceless woman from the cemetery. Her voice was sweet like a summer spring breeze, but I bet it would sound a whole lot sweeter, ch🫶🏾king on my d¡ck as tears poured from her eyes
📢She 💦 so hard the force of it almost pushed me out
📢Lick it clean, Doll
📢“Other men would give you diamonds and flowers, but I’d rip the soul from a body and hand it to you."
#FMC reborn "I was nothing more than a broken thing in his grasp, a cracked doll with snapped strings." Alora is a tough cookie to crack as a FMC but Cross does an excellent job with her. She's not perfect. She's not innocent and she makes some bad decisions but by God is she human. How many Aloras are out there, just tumbling along just needing someone tonsay "I believe you" "you are worthy of hope". I appreciated the broken moments, the small moments and self doubt. It not only grounded so many of her actuons it made tge last 20% of the book that much sweeter.
So this review is going to be one hell of a mess because I honestly don't know where to begin, and my excitement is all over the place so bear with me.
First of all.. I don't know what's most disturbing. The things that's going on in this book, or how well written the psychopatic side of the MMC is..👀 And even more disturbing is how much I drooled over him! I mean, the things Greyson says.. 🫠🫠 The way he claims Alora.. 🫠🫠 The way he's totally obsessed with her.. 🫠🫠 Gods the list is endless, and I ate it all up!!
Alora is just this broken and neglected girl who's trying to survive the trauma from her past. My heart cried so much for her and her story, but the way she dealed with everything Greyson put her through, seriously made her one of my favorite FMCs 🤩
I might drool over Greyson, cry for Alora and make everything seem like this is a laid back romance.. BUT IT'S MOST DEFINITELY NOT!! It's so twisted, bloody and sickening to a point where certain things never will be the same again. Especially carousels.. I should hate the author for ruining such an innocent thing for me, but I simply can't.. I just LOVE Brooklyn Cross's twisted imagination, and I'm so much looking forward to read more from her 😍😍
This book is a dark and twisted romance set in the streets of New Orleans. The story follows Alora, a woman haunted by her past. After being imprisoned at 17 for being accused of killing her sister and her sister's friend in a tragic car chase, she's released five years later, but struggles with alcoholism while trying to rebuild her life, I really felt for her.
The MMC Greyson is a serial unaliver who tortures bad people in the mausoleum underneath the church he owns. He first spots Alora at her sister's grave and is instantly intrigued/obsessed. His methods of helping her heal are...questionable; Kidnapping, forcing her to confront her trauma, and even forcing her to look after her body. Despite this, their connection runs deep, they're both damaged and find solace in each other’s madness.
The story is dark yet healing, the pacing is a little slow at times, and the spice is intense- including a wild carousel scene at Greyson's bar (iykyk). The ending wraps up neatly, with revenge served and Alora beginning to heal with Greyson’s help. Their love makes sense in their own chaotic ways, and ran deeper than the blood they seem to crave, it was definitely worth reading!
