Fair warning… this review is going to contain a mini rant. If that’s not your thing, stop reading now.
I’m extremely annoyed. I have been loyal to this series. Obviously, because I’m reading book 7! I was happy that the opening chapters refreshed my memory a bit as to where the story was up to because it’s been a year since I’ve been with these characters. And then it happened… Something that annoys the absolute hell out of me when authors do this. Earlier in the series, a character Nat was introduced. She ended up having her own spinoff series. I chose not to read that series. But now, the author obviously assumes that everyone would read the spinoffs because the many characters from that series are dumped into this series. And not just in a causal mention way. Or a hanging out in the background way. Suddenly, a large amount of characters I have never read about, know nothing about, therefore don’t care in the slightest about are in the book. Not just in the book, but HAVE THEIR OWN CHAPTERS. Seriously??! Who are these people? Why should I care about them? Why are they taking page time away from characters I have stuck with for 6 books already? Why, with the gazillion characters already in this series, are we adding a gazillion more, and giving them their own little personal storylines? Plus, it’s not just that they are in the book. It’s the way they are put in the book - assuming we know them already. It makes me mad. I shouldn’t have to read a whole different series to understand the dynamics in the seventh book of the series I wanted to read.
I’m guessing it is pretty hard to wrap up a long series that has a gazillion characters in it. So many people and lots of personal storylines, on top of the main “defeating the Sovereign” story. It made this book kind of painful to read. We switch between so many people, that the story itself feels like it’s going absolutely nowhere. At nearly half way through, basically nothing has happened in the main story. It’s all just jumping between a dizzying amount of peoples perspectives of maintaining and protecting a ship. Therefore… boring me to tears. Eventually some action happens, then back to ship maintenance.
I thought this was the final book in the series, so I was confused by the fact that the storyline with the Sovereign didn’t move at all. I kept waiting and waiting, and it never happens. It’s really strange to me that the overall story of this space opera is how to defeat the Sovereign, and yet the Sovereign is barely in the books at all. She doesn’t even make an appearance in this book. I hate to say it, but this book feels superfluous to the series. Like I could have skipped it and it wouldn’t really matter. I’m also a bit sad that it wasn’t the end of the series. I’m ready for it. I’ve enjoyed the books, but I’m starting to lose interest.
