Wolves Of Blackwood #1

Never Trust an Alpha

Rate this book
Ever since I discovered I’m not human, I’ve always believed wolf shifters are monsters, me included. Except the alpha and mayor of Blackwood Creek isn’t a monster at all. He’s my fake fiancé for my own protection.

As the prime suspect in a murder investigation, I’ve got no choice but to take sanctuary with Ridge until I can clear my name. But my presence in town means the entire pack in Blackwood Creek are in danger from the hunters who are after me.

Not even Ridge’s strong protective instincts can save me—or the town—if I don’t leave soon. And if I stay much longer, my heart will be at risk of believing that shifters can be trusted and that my fake fiancé is the real thing…

This was a pleasant surprise, the first time I've read this author but I'm impressed. The only thing I'm sad about is I didn't realise this wasn't complete and now I have to wait till bloody June to read the sequel. This is a paranormal, fake-dating, small-town fated-mates romance with suspense. Tori has been on the run for four years. Born into a hunter family her world was shattered when she shifted into a wolf becoming the monster she was taught to hate and fear. Now she barely exists as her life is spent on the road evading the hunters who are never far behind.

Blackwood Creek was only meant to be a temporary refuge but here Tori finds her heart in the form of the local Mayor and Alpha Ridge. When she becomes the prime suspect in a murder Ridge steps up to protect her claiming her as his fake fiance. Now Tori is engaged to the Mayor and it's not long before she wishes their pretence was her reality.

This one was so well written and such an easy page-turner. It's quite a lengthy book but I wasn't ever bored and the relationship between Tori and Ridge was magical. Ridge is such a protective passionate dream and the patience and care he shows Tori is the stuff dreams are made of, he's the real deal.

There's found family, passion and love, lots of danger as Tori being in Blackwood means the hunters are hot on her tail. There are also secrets that she's keeping close to her chest as she believes that if Ridge discovers them he will hate her. Tori is also dealing with a partially feral wolf as suppressing this part of herself and being a lone wolf has resulted in some extreme consequences.

My only small grumble is that I wanted Ridge to just tell Tori who she was to him and also for Tori to fess up regarding her secrets. Other than that I was grand and this is a read I highly recommend. I'm for sure reading book two when it is released.

I give up at 31%/page 230 bc there is no way this book needs to be over 700 pages. I’ve read almost a third of it and so little has actually happened; most of it is the same thoughts these characters have had ten times already and I can’t do it anymore 😭 I’m curious about the hunters and her background but she’s also so fucking annoying with her “I’m programmed to hate shifters” talk/thoughts even though she’s met some now and should understand that they aren’t all bad and shouldn’t be killed just for being shifters. I get that it’s how she was taught or whatever so she’s brainwashed and her mom’s death and stuff but I hate when that becomes “oh guess they’re all bad and deserve to die” bc that’s so dumb. Like humans don’t do bad shit too and she’s not thinking all humans should die now, is she? I’m rolling my eyes every time this girl thinks this bc I can’t stand her. One moment she’s like merciful death isn’t a thing and it’s bad and she knows the hunters torture shifters and then the next she’s like well they are all monsters and I’m like this girl is so damn annoying. And Ridge thinks she’s the best thing ever and then is like oh I’ve seen mates be like that but oh no, she can’t be my fated mate, bc if she was I’d know for sure right??? It gets old SO FAST. I don’t need to hear him think this every other chapter gdi. Also, the mean rich people are so stupid and delusional, and their mean richness is their entire personality. I rolled my eyes so many times at the Greenthornes bc they’re so dumb.

Okay I’m tapping out. This book has some excellent reviews but it’s just not for me.
I feel like I’ve been reading it forever and I’m only at 25%.
It’s far too long and repetitive.

I am on the same side as most of the other reviewers for this book. While this book is good it is way too long. There are two parts to this book, but in all honesty it should have been two books. That would have helped break everything down more. It also would have helped the book not drag on and on. If you go into this book knowing that you should read it as two books then you might like it more.

Tori and Ridge had instant chemistry, but they pretend to be fake fiancés to help Tori with a problem. Ridge fell so fast and hard for Tori and it was so adorable to see him mooning over her. It did bug me that they both liked each other so much and all they had to do was have a conversation and both of them would finally know what the other felt. There were some things that seemed to be repeated and could have been removed. There was action and I did really enjoy getting to know some of the side characters. I am debating on if I want to continue with the series.

What to expect:
~ Werewolf romance
~ He falls first and harder
~ Possessive alpha male

WOW!!! It’s been a long time since werewolves were written this good.

Set in the small town of Blackwood Creak, following Ridge and Tori as they navigate their way through secrets and hidden truths.

This book is imaginative, dynamic, sassy, funny, twisting and turning.
Each character pulls you in whether you love or hate them. You want to know more.

The ending…. Well let’s just say you won’t know it’s coming.

Part of the Wolves of Blackwood series two incredibly stubborn people who are perfect for one another. Tori independent, very opinionated, she is strong, and she is on the run she is a suspect in a murder being hunted by hunters hiding out in Blackwood Creek but the thing about Blackwood Creek is a town of wolf shifters she has always felt like wolf shifters were evil that included her, yet they welcomed her. Ridge sexy as all get out Mayor of Blackwood Creek alpha wolf shifter, when he meets the she wolf he does what is needed to protect her by pretending to be her fiancé, ensuring her safety and throwing her for a loop. Tori no longer knows what to think all her notions or beliefs have been dispelled by the kindness, the compassion this alpha has shown her, but the hunters are getting closer, will the alpha let them get her, will he protect her, is she guilty of murder, will the town be destroyed, and is there happiness written for them?

This is a great book about two people meeting under difficult circumstances and finding a way to be together even if they don’t want to admit it to themselves.
Tori is fierce and independent whilst Ridge is caring and compassionate but, both a incredibly stubborn.
The story is free-flowing and sucks you in. I do like the way that new and unexpected things happen throughout the story.
This is only part one of a series and doesn’t really end on a cliffhanger so I don’t mind having to wait for the next part.
This is a great story and I can’t wait for the next instalment.

Great storyline

The first part of the book started out strong. It keeps you reading and constantly engaged. As the storyline progressed, the repetitive banter almost seemed too much. I found myself skimming pages, not wanting to read the same things over and over again. The page count could have been 100 pages less without the constant rehashing.

Regardless, I still gave it a 5 because the storyline was that good. I hope in the next book there is less rehashing and more story.

I wavered between 2 and 3 stars. This book could be 200 pages shorter if not for the constant internal monologue that drolls on. I struggled to continue when I finished part one. The storyline is decent. It’s got great mystery and intrigue, but there are times when you’re just trying to get through the chapter because almost the entire chapter is someone’s musings AND SO REPETITIVE!! Internal musings are fine if you smatter it with dialogue between the musings. But not the same thoughts same thoughts over and over again throughout the book. Ok, we get it. This is a problem with some authors that try to do first person POV writing. The amount of times Tori rambles on about leaving so the hunters don’t follow her to Blackwood. Ugh!! And during sex, how many times do we need to read, “Inside me. now”, “you’re so tight, “I feel so full”. Come up with new lines! One of the frustrations is when someone asks a question and you have 2 pages of internal thoughts before the question is answered and then you have to remember what was the question? Something odd about this book…it’s broken up into part one and part two; however, part two writing declines. It’s different.
The author’s timelines are screwed up. She says Margo is 23 and Margo is older than Tori. Ridge makes the comment she couldn’t be older than 25. We know Tori was 17 and on the run for 4 year would make her 21. But then Audrey said Tori’s brother, Kyle, couldn’t be much older than 21. But Tori says her brother is much older than her and practically raised her since their parents were so busy. Make that make sense? Elliot Elkin mentioned that Tori’s father, Jaxon, was killed 23 years ago. So how was Tori conceived if she is 21? Ridge mentioned that he and Clawson grew up together making them close in age. Margo tells us Clawson was 3 years ahead of her in school. That makes Clawson 26 and Ridge close in age and they are Mayor and Sheriff? So how does any of that make sense?

I liked this book and i think the story is interesting - a new take on the fated mates and struggle between supernaturals and humans. The FMC and MMC are likable and believable as a couple and their chemistry is great. The 3 stars are based on 3 main reasons that made this book sometimes boring to read:
1) the constant rumbling on and on and yawn from FMC and MMC - it bored me as reader and i skipped pages and pages where both talked about the same issues and why they were acting as they were (not mentioning them not to add spoilers). I think you have 150 pages of internal repeated dialogue over the 700 pages... too much
2) other characters - secondary characters are too stereotyped - the French barman, the nasty power hungry couple, the shy single woman - too much single dimensional for me to make it realistic. I am not advocating different POVs at all, but rounder character building would be beneficial for the story.
3) some of the things happening in the book are dramatic - murder, stabbing and kidnapping but there is little pace and action in the story - all just gets sorted quickly and nicely. It could be more dynamic and full of action - this would have made the story more appealing instead of reading about the struggle and obstacles for the main couple to be together even if they are together - a lot (???).

all in all, will pick up the second book, probably because it is on KU - not sure i would have paid £6 to own it though

★ 2.5 stars

The basic premise is, Tori is on the run from hunters and is forced to hide in a town known as Blackwood Creek. Unbeknownst to her, it's a town full of shifters and soon after she arrives, she's the main suspect in a murder investigation. The mayor and Alpha, Ridge, proposes a fake-marriage to help clear Tori's name. Tori is a damaged, broken shifter who thinks all wolves (including herself) are evil monsters. She constantly second-guesses everything and has extremely low self-esteem. It only takes about 450 pages for her to stop hating herself and other shifters.

This was soo incredibly repetitive and soo unnecessarily long, it could have easily been edited down to some 400 pages. There were way too many inner monologues about scenes that were already written and discussed in previous chapters. Every single sentence of dialogue seemed to have pages of monologues and thoughts before the person even replied. I had to go back and remind myself what the characters were even talking about because they were just thinking so much about every single thing. It almost felt like stream-of-consciousness writing.

I'm extremely curious of how the story ends, but I don't think I have it in me to push through another 700+ page book repeating the same inner dialogues over and over every chapter.

Story and premise seemed promising, but I was not a fan of the writing.

Possibilities wasted

I went into this book excited about the storyline, which truly had a lot of potential. Unfortunately, the execution didn’t fully deliver. One of the biggest issues for me was the overly long dialogue surrounding the sex scenes. Instead of adding depth or tension, these moments dragged on and pulled focus away from the plot.

I also struggled to connect with the main female character a lot of the time, she made rash decisions and seemed immature; and her reactions often left me detached from her perspective. The main male character—described as the alpha—also fell short of expectations. He took far too long to step up and handle his responsibilities, which made his role feel less compelling than it should have been.

What disappointed me most is that the author set up an intriguing storyline but didn’t follow through. Important questions were left unanswered, weakening the overall impact. And to top it off, the book ends on a cliffhanger that feels less like a natural turning point and more like an abrupt stop. The author wasted too much time on rehasing old thoughts and sex instead of using that time to answer some of the questions.

Overall, this book had a strong foundation, but the pacing issues and lack of resolution left me feeling unsatisfied. I'm not sure if I'm reading the next book.

Tori was raised believing she was a human in a family of hunters, but when she shifted into a wolf during training one day she became the next target to be hunted down and eliminated. While on the run, Tori stumbles across a town where, unbeknownst to her, wolves live alongside regular humans in peace. There she meets the town's mayor, Ridge, and they share an instant attraction to each other. Tori decides to stay awhile until she learns Ridge is a wolf too, then she freaks out and runs. Ridge gets her to calm down and stay so he can teach her how to be a wolf, not fear her other half, and not go feral. A human is murdered in town and Tori is blamed, so Ridge claims her as his fiance so he can protect her until the real murderer is caught. Amid all of this Tori's hunter family is still searching for her to put her down.

I did like this book, while is was maybe a little too long (repetitive sometimes) for what it was, I thought it was a good opening to a series I will be continuing.

The Audiobook needs some serious editing help, multiple parts were repeated or spliced incorrectly. That was very annoying, the actual narrators were good, it was just the editing and how the recordings were put together that needs work.

This book was so good! I’m so mad I didn’t realize it was going to have another book that isn’t out yet - because I really want to read that book now 😝 First of all, shifter books are kinda my guilty pleasure books - but I really struggle to find good ones. So many have pretty bad writing (like a teenager writing fan fiction…) or just terrible plots that make no sense. To me, the writing in this book is actually really good (there were some cringe parts but nothing crazy) and the plot was actually interesting!

Things I liked about this book:
✔️ possessive alpha male
✔️ heroine that actually stands up / takes care of herself
✔️ fated mates
✔️ no ow/om drama / no cheating / neither are virgins but not a lot of talk of other partners
✔️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️/5
✔️ Actual plot / interesting story line

There were a few things I didn’t love - nothing huge but a couple of plot points that were either confusing or to me seemed obvious. But honestly overall I really enjoyed the book and can’t wait for the next one.

Great Shifter Romance

Tori has only been able to rely on herself for four years, since she went on the run from hunters lead by her father. During this time she's had an internal battle with her wolf who she's seen as a monster. But when she ends up at Blackwood Creek being helped by the town's mayor, Ridge, who asks for a little help in return she agrees.

Ridge's wolf can sense the new little wolf in town is scared and on the run from something and want's to help her. But the more time they spend together, as a fake couple, the more he is drawn to her wanting to make it more than a fake relationship.

A shifter romance with great chemistry between the compassionate mayor and confused Tori; with action, kidnappings, murder, mystery and some lovely twists. Having read this I can't wait for the next in the series.

Took too long to finish

The story itself was fine. But it dragged on and on. I was so irritated with the characters drawing out the time it took to share secrets and the inner monologues that I would just stop reading and do something else. My neurotic need to finish a book I start had me powering through it. The many spice scenes were not needed, and were boring. There was no build up of spice and were inserted to make the 700+ page story feel even longer. (i flipped through them.)
It wasn’t bad enough to just not finish. Then it left you on a cliff hanger. I won’t be reading the next book I can’t push myself to read another book like this where I’m flipping through spicy stuff just to get to the good stuff.

This had to be my favourite book I’ve read this year. I couldn’t stop turning the pages. The ML was is so charming and just knew how to deal with the feisty and confused FL. All characters had so much story that it made for a really fulfilling read. All that and lots of themes going on - shifter dynamics, romance, character building, action and murder mystery. And yet it was so well put together. There were so many sweet moments - mainly the main characters but even side characters romancing. And no annoying jealous theme throughout! A refreshing read.

Earning Her Trust . . .

Tori is on the run. She cuts off her hair to help disguise herself. She became the main suspect of a murder and hunters are after her. She is now hiding in Blackwood Creek, a town of wolf shifters, hoping she blends in. The mayor, Ridge, is trying to help her, pretending he is her fake fiancé. But this puts the town in danger. And she thinks she is starting to have feelings for Ridge! She thought all shifters, herself included, were evil. But she may have been wrong about that. Will the hunters catch up to her? Will Ridge protect her? Or will she have to move on so that the town is not destroyed?

Wowza...

I had a major book hangover from this one. This is not a typical shifter book. This varies from the typical shifter environment. Very nicely written! So invested in these characters, Ridge & Tori, and their journey. The emotional up and down is a great ride. The pull and capture of interest in the story is certainly there. There are secrets and mystery! The cliffhanger is wicked, especially since book 2 isn't coming out for 4 months! [June 2024] ... the ONLY thing I didn't like was the constant need for Tori to express how she wanted to leave/run, but I understand it.

Wordy and Repetitive

While having a good plot, book 1 does not end with any semblance of completion. Story was wordy and repetitive and the over 700 pages in my Kindle read would have been enjoyed more if it had been in 400 pages. You could open at any point and not know where you were at in story as the narrative kept repeating itself. Reminded me of completing an essay and then lengthening it to meet the required word count. As much as I'd like to know the outcome of the story, I won't be reading the rest of the series. Also several misspellings which added to my displeasure of the narrative.

This in an excellent book. A wolf shifter, who thinks all wolf shifters are evil, is forced to hide in a town of wolf shifters known as Blackwood Creek. This is due to being named a main suspect in a murder. There are hunters on the lookout, and the entire town is at risk. The mayor Ridge, is pretending to be the fiancé, trying to further protect her. The longer the stay in the town, the more questions are raised, the more beliefs are questioned. Maybe wolf shifters aren't innately bad? Maybe feelings are developing for the fake fiance? Is everything that was ever believed wrong?

When I tell you this one has me turning the pages and audibly gasping, I meant it. (My poor hubby was like “what’s up with her?”).

Tori is independent, wolf shifter and stubborn to boot. She’s on. A journey of self discovery and acceptance.
The MMC, Ridge, is her protective fake Fiance. Ridge is also the mayor and a shifter. Ridge realizes pretty quickly they are mates, and (in his own way) helps Tori along her journey.

The pacing of this book was perfect. It kept me entertained and wanting to read on.
Would recommend for any reader wanting a longer shifter romance.

Wolf shifters are my favorite. Very intriguing story. First time reading a book by this author and enjoyed it immensely. Tori has been on the run for about 4 years. She finds a small town named Blackwood Creek. She decides to check it out. She meets Ridge and their connection is immediate. But her trust issues are zero. Guess she could stay one night and then move on. There is something about this town that feels good to her. Then something horrible happens and Ridge has a possible proposition to help her. Should she do it or not?

Ridge and Tori

This book has all the feels. I have laughed, cried and swooned so many times. It’s a big book (and I like big books) and ends in a huge cliffhanger but don’t stress because the next one is out. So grab lots of tissues and snacks and dive into the small town of Blackwood Creek and be prepared for Alphas, a hunky Mayor/Alpha, a terrified woman on the run from hunters and her wolf, the Magpies, a snooty couple of rich entitled wolves and all the crazy sweet people that make the town perfect.

A shifter who thinks all shifters are monsters needs help from the Mayor and Alpha of Blackwood Creek because she is the prime suspect in a murder investigation. Now hunters are after her and the Blackwood Creek clan are in danger because of her. She finds out not all shifters are monsters. Really good book that I would definitely recommend.

Shifter small town

I don't know where to begin except, wow! I fe!l for Ridge and Tori and the rest of the towns characters. The romance is high steam and genuine, and the developing friendships are beautiful. There is so much more history and background to discover about both their families pasts, I can't wait till the next book to uncover what happens! Excellent storytelling and writing.
