Meh. I am usually a sucker for rock star romance and this book was a free download so I said why not. 1. It was incredibly disjointed. There was no fluidity. 2. Is it too much to proofread these days?? I usually try to make and effort to overlook typos to focus on the plot but it was just that bad and I couldn't. 3. The ending made me want to bash my head in. Really? All of that tough act to be that weak over a dude? Being bummed is one thing but that? Ugh. 4. Too many details missing and not interesting enough to read further in the series. In summary, not my cup of tea.

The story felt a little flat for me. The characters were hard for me to connect at first. Natalie and Ryan. But as for the other characters Liam and Layla I kind of like them. Omg, Ryan is an asshole. Just cause one girl didn't like his kind of music he became an ass. But I loved how he became all angst and try to appear he wasn't affected by Natalie. Guys and their feelings haha. But I will have to say that Natalie's character is sad. A bit of a heart wrenching moment at the end.

OMG! What did I just read? Amazing!

I had been told about this book some time ago and wanted to read it. After being gifted a copy to read, the game was on! I picked it up and couldn't put it down. It had me right from the start!

I loved the characters! Like Natalie, I also suffer from panic/anxiety so I could instantly relate to that. I also live and breathe music so all of the song/music references just added to the the story and my love for it. The storyline was not your basic boy meets girl. Natalie and Ryan had a story, a past - and depth. I loved reading how they went back and forth battling their emotions and themselves. When I got to the ending, I freaked out! What? No! Don't leave me hanging like this (yes I said those things, out loud, to no one, with some added expletives)! Not usually a fan of cliffhangers, I'm ok with it. Since I will be getting the next book AS SOON AS IT IS OUT!!

Can't wait to see what comes next...definitely a fan!

CLIFFHANGER
Childhood friends suffer a tragedy move to Boston for one to attend music college.
Party girl Layla, treats her guilt & pain with one night stands & enabling. The other Natalie, losses herself in emotional books, movies & Deep & Meaningful music.
Natalie has convinced herself she will hate the concert she's dragged to. Ryan Steele, the rock star, sees her contempt, drags her on stage to embarrass her then contrives to get time to change her mind.

The story was not to bad but character development pretty thin. Will read the second to see if more substance.

So this is the authors debut book. Wow is all i have to say. I read this book in one day. On page one I was hooked, why did it have to end... AND the ending Omg the ending had me in tears. Natalie and Ryan has alot of demons to face and the author made that well known. I really can't wait for book 2. Hands down one of my favorite authors. Great job girl now bring on the next one.

Was a great book. Lots of ups and downs. Makes you really sink into the characters. Couldn't put it down. The only thing that sucked was the cliff hanger end with not knowing when the next one is coming.

First chance is a novella from a new author. After this book was over, I immediately wanted to know the rest of the story about Natalie and Ryan.

Natalie Wright is hurt. She hides from everyone else, and her only escape is music. I cant totally relate to how she feels. However, I felt this way in high school, for me the emotions were kind of all over the place. Her only friend is Layla, and they are complete opposites.

I would rather live in a constant of fear and worry than numb. At least I am alive and feeling. -Natalie

Ryan "Steele" Hurst, is the lead singer in the rock band "Steele's Army". He personifies the perfect bad boy musician. Sleeping his way to the top. But, when he spots Layla at a one of their concerts at a local college, he wants to break her.

A woman is worth one night only to me, after that I am good. Why ruin a sexually adventurous experience?. -Steele

Both of these characters have strong personalities, and are more stubborn than anything. The book ends in a bit of a cliffhanger so I am interested to see how the story actually will end up. The characters are both broken as well. They have demons in their past and present that may make them run from each other, only to fall back into one another’s arms. Even when people are hurting and weak, they can battle through the problems and be strong together.

Okay. First i would say this book has quite an impressive plot! The author has really captured my attention through out this first book! There were interesting and unique scenarios that occurred during every chapter and the characters were enticing to read! I understood them well. However, my mood soured during the next book. It was too fast paced and completely rushed, i didn't understand what the story was about and where it was heading towards! Too many chapters were cut down and only summarised bits and pieces of information! The character swap was kind of frustrating and i had difficulty staying in touch with each persona. I felt somewhat trapped and confused at the same time, in the end i couldn't sympathise for the girl, i wasn't in tune with her thoughts, feelings and perspective of things. I wasn't there with her through out the whole story and her man wasn't there either, i was kind of confused to who she'll end up with and why she decided to sleep with the singer when he was such a jackass to her!

Overall, i really enjoyed this first book. However the second book escalated why to quickly for me to understand what was happening!xx

I had heard amazing things about A.l. Woods as an author way before I read this book, but after reading this I can understand why. The way she writes the interaction between her characters absolutely amazes me, and I could not put the book down. I read it all in just a few hours. You have Ryan this big hot shot control freak womanizing rockstar, and Natalie a girl with so closed off from everybody its sad. Both have been through their fair share of tragedy and heartache. When they meet in the book you can feel the electricity coming through the pages. They way that interact left me wanting to reach through my kindle and smack both characters. There were parts where I was just as mad as the characters seemed to be and parts where I just laughed. By the end of the book I was holding back tears and thinking why and no all at the same time. This is a must read and I can't wait to read more. There is nothing better then reading a book written by an author that can really make you feel the emotions! I can't wait to share this book with my friends.

This is an example of a book moving too fast. I understand it’s a novella so it’s suppose to be short, sweet and to the point. But being a novella is no excuse to cheapen the story for readers. A story is a story and every reader should be given quality characters, emotion and a story that grabs you regardless of the page numbers. It is in this respect that the author fell short. I was horribly let down with this story. The story line itself moved so fast that I questioned the validity of the characters and their respective feelings. The ending, I am assuming was suppose to be shock. In one respect, it was. But not in a good way. I had no emotional connection to what was happening. Reading it, instead of being angry and sad, I sat there like "really, you have got to be kidding me?". Unfortunately, the ending made me laugh. I wasn't satisfied. I was left asking myself "why did I just read this?" This book had the components to be so much more. In the end, it fell short of all its promises and left me annoyed and unfulfilled.

OMFG....WOW

I so cannot wait to read the next book. I told my hubby that I was gonna read only one more chapter and that was chapter 13 and then I was coming to bed. The next thing I know I am at the end of the book and say RTF just happened. I just could not put it down at all. I so fell in love with Ryan, Natalie and Liam. If you are looking for a great read then this is the book you want....but beware there is a cliffhanger so make sure you have the second book on hand to read right away.

I really tried liking this book. But the characters were really hard to like. I liked the supporting characters a lot more than the main characters. I have the same complaint as some of the readers- Proof reading should not be an overlooked step in writing a book. The ending was terrible. It wasn't believeable

the biggest WTF!!
First of all this book needs some editing! Too many words pilled up unnecessarily.
Second, the story has so many flaws and the whole plot was not really thought through: there are so many contradictions in both Steel's and Natalie's life story!
Third, it was the biggest eye roll of the month. I wasted 4 hours of my life on this.
Good cover, though.

If I could give negative stars, I would.

People, this book is nowhere ready to be published. This book is an affront to the English language. This book is a disgrace to literature and publishing and anything that involves putting two or more words together to make a coherent sentence.

I know there are some misguided souls out there who feel that negative book reviews should be outlawed and reviewers should "think of the feelings of the poor little author who slaved away."

Well, who thought of ME? Who thought of the poor reader who got sucked in by five star reviews (all those reviewers are now on notice with me - I can't trust you to review "Hop on Pop," much less a novel). If you don't want negative reviews, DON'T PUBLISH SHIT. 'Nuff said.

I don't care that this book is currently free on Amazon and didn't cost me any money. It cost me time. I don't want it to cost the time of others, so I finished it so that my suffering might save others.

And if you don't believe me just how stinky horrible this is? Here's just a small sample of the "prose:"

Until five years ago, Layla and I were staying at my house having a movie night while our parents went to a sit down fundraiser dinner raising money for abused children. Our parents were always supporting charities. They were fortunate to have money beyond their wildest dreams. I also donate quarterly, mainly to charities for children or music programs, in memoriam of them.

I still don’t know all the details, nor do I want to. I think it would fuck me up even more if I did.

Recalling that night. It was late, way past our supposed bedtime, when we heard a knock at the door. I paused the movie we were watching and answered the door. It was a police officer. He introduced himself as Officer Petty's. He asked if I was Natalie Wright. That being me of course I said yes. He then asked if Layla was there and if we would come with him.

I should have known something was wrong when he wouldn’t tell us why we were on our way to the hospital. In fact, he wouldn’t tell us anything at all. When you tell someone that their parents are deceased and that her best friend’s parents are in surgery, you don’t want them to be alone.

When we entered the ER he asked me if I wanted to see my parents’ bodies, that's how we broke the crushing news.

Wood, A.L. (2014-01-23). First Chance (Rock Romance) (p. 2). . Kindle Edition.

My eyes, my eyes. They can never unsee the damage done to the English language.

And in what reality is a fifteen year old told her parents are dead by being asked if she wants to see the bodies?!?!?

Meanwhile, just a few horribly written paragraphs later:

Apparently our parents had a few drinks and thinking Layla's father was the least drunk, he drove them home. Speeding down the road he lost control of the car causing the vehicle to crash into a guard rail, and my parents were then thrown from the car. EMTs found my parents bodies about fifty feet away from the car. They were pronounced dead on the scene. Layla's father, Brian, was going at least seventy miles an hour and not one of them were wearing seatbelts.

Wood, A.L. (2014-01-23). First Chance (Rock Romance) (p. 3). . Kindle Edition.

So, um, when the narrator said she didn't know all the details because it would fuck her up...I guess she does indeed know all the details. *headdesk*

Something is indeed fucked up - oh yeah, it's the current system that allows stuff like this to be put on sale (yes, I know this is currently free. But the sequel ain't).

It gets worse:

Need to know every step of the narrator taking a shower, because it adds so much to the story? Sure!
I turn the shower on choosing to let the water warm up for a few minutes, usually I face a strong shock to my system by getting in and just turning the shower on. A stream of icy cold water is a fairly easy way to wake up quickly. Not taking time lingering under the showerhead, I wash my hair and body with speed and step out of the shower, drying my body off then wrapping the towel around my hair. I walk back into my bedroom.

Wood, A.L. (2014-01-23). First Chance (Rock Romance) (pp. 8-9). . Kindle Edition.

I'm so happy she knew to walk back to the bedroom, aren't you? Keep in mind that the book's story hasn't really started yet. This is all still prelude. And...yawn...such an exciting prelude it is. Don't worry, the excruciating exposition isn't over yet:

Having sat my clothes out on my bed I pick the black designer dress and examine it. It ends at the knee, acceptable. I throw on a pair of flesh colored hosiery and black strappy high-heels. Unwrapping my hair, I run my fingers through it, combing out any knots I find. Then grab my handbag and walk out into the living room. Layla's there alone. Thank God, I didn't want to be a third wheel making an uncomfortable dinner. She’s ready, jacket and all.

“All ready?” Layla asks.

I nod. Making my way out of our apartment while she locks up. A few seconds later she joins me in the elevator making our decent to the lobby of our building. I question her about the new guy, she answers evasively. That’s how I know it’s another unserious fling. Exiting our building we start walking to the car garage across the street.

Wood, A.L. (2014-01-23). First Chance (Rock Romance) (p. 9). . Kindle Edition.

Don't worry, I won't quote more because THE EXPOSITION GOES ON FOR THE NEXT FOUR CHAPTERS. I kid you not. And the story doesn't really kick off until Chapter 7.

For those who might be tempted, here is the "plot" (and I use the word lightly) in a nutshell:

Natalie Wright is a sophomore at the Berklee College of Music (which should totally sue for slander for its depiction in this book). Her best friend Layla drags her to a rock concert, where the headliner is the hit band fronted by lead singer Ryan Steele. Ryan, because he is a major douche, pulls Natalie up on stage to humiliate her because she appears disinterested in the concert (apparently Ryan has super vision that can penetrate the stage lights and see into the audience). But the joke is on him. Natalie tells us, "Unbeknownst to him I can sing, I've been compared to some of the best female voices of all time." But of course, Mary Sue Natalie.

Natalie runs off after she duets with Ryan. Layla, because she is the world's most insensitive and catty friend, waltzes backstage and tells Ryan Natalie's name. Ryan is then informed by his manager that the band MUST hire an intern from Berklee. Ryan in turn blackmails a professor into ensuring Natalie will be the intern because all New Adult "heroes" must exhibit super scary stalker tendencies.

Natalie takes the internship because otherwise she will fail her already completed courses (says no college, EVER). Soon she's on tour with the band, sleeping on their bus, because this book already doesn't have a toehold in reality so why introduce believable situations now? A love triangle is introduced in the form of Liam, a rather sweet and beta-ish band member so of course he stands no chance with Natalie, the Desired By Every Man Who Sets Eyes On Her.

Meanwhile, paint by numbers Natalie sees the tortured artist deep in Ryan's soul that no one else can, although that doesn't stop her from behaving like a scared rabbit every time he stalks sees her.

ARC provided by the author.

Natalie Wright is emootionally hurt. She is hiding herself from the rest of the world. Her paradise is music. She only has one friend, Layla. They are so different, but they love each other.

Meet Ryan "Steele" Hurst, lead singer in the rock band "Steele's Army". They are the image of bad boys, what is that true? He wants to break Natalie, the only woman who did not enjoy their presentation at the University, the one that ran away.

Natalie and Steele had never felt like this before, they share a connection, a bound. They were more than attacted to each other, this is more than lust, they do not know what it is, but they feel it . Are they going to make it work?

More than one person on the book is broken. The author show us people that are hurt, they are weak but at the same time they are strong. She made a perfect work describing the feelings and emotions. They feel so real.

Two lost persons collide into each other. Are pain, jealously, and guilt stronger than this two lost souls?

****QUOTES****

I would rather live in a constant of fear and worry than numb. At least I am alive and feeling. -Natalie

"I am not singing that song with you, it is about cheaoing the meaning of love, Degradation of women. An example of everything I despise in mainstream music" -Natalie

A woman is worth one night only to me, after that I am good. why ruin a sexually adventurous experience. -Steele

Looking in the mirror, the stranger I see, the sadness that consumes me, I know she is me. But I do not know whi she is, not anymore. -Natalie

I am not a god damn pervert, her virtue is safe with me but she does not need to know that just yet. -Steele

I see a desperate weeping soul, needing to be held and loved. In him, I see myself looking back at me. He is lost. -Natalie to Liam.

Natalie is a college student, majoring in music and living with her best friend Layla. Their relationship is more than your typical BFFs, considering they grew up together and Layla’s parents became Natalie’s guardians after the tragic deaths of her parents in an auto accident. Layla often pushes Natalie outside of her comfort zone, which really isn’t too hard to do considering Natalie still suffers from debilitating panic attacks and nightmares due to her parents deaths. Natalie doesn’t live the life of the carefree college kid…far from it.

Ryan “Steele” Hurst is the lead singer of Steele’s Army, an up and coming rock group that has taken the world by storm. As part of a publicity stunt by their manager, they have been roped into playing a gig at a music school in Massachusetts. It is there that Steele sees Natalie sitting in the audience, completely unimpressed with the band’s performance, regardless of how much heart and soul they put into it. It is then that Steele has the idea that he is going to make Natalie change her mind and prove to her that even though she might not like their type of music, it still possesses all of the soul and passion of any other genre. Steele comes up with a plan to take on Natalie as an intern for their summer tour, and chaos ensues.

First Chance has the makings of a very good story, however the book as it stands right now is in dire need of an editor. I normally don’t like to deduct stars like this, and I don’t if I have been given an advance copy, but this is one that I paid for and it was released like this. Unfortunately it is rife with spelling and grammatical errors that make it hard to follow from time to time. There are numerous sentence fragments and errors in subject/verb agreement and it is very distracting. I also would have liked to see more depth not only to the storyline, but to the characters as well. This is a novella and it seems there could just be so much more exploration with the storyline.

That aside, I do like what the author has done with the characters, especially the character of Liam, I really did like him. Natalie was very hard to like, I have to admit because there were several times I wanted to yell at her to just suck it up, and Steele too, but Liam really sold the book for me. Yes, this book ends on a major cliffhanger, but I read this right before the next book was released so that didn’t bother me as much.

Ms. Wood definitely had an interesting story to tell and I realize editors don’t come cheap, however her writing could be so much more polished and easier to read. I’m looking forward to starting right into the next volume of the series, Last Chance.

New to me Author.

In this book we have best friends Natalie and Layla. There parents were best friends but one night horrible night when they are both teenagers it changed both of their lives forever.

Forward to college both girls are in music classes at Berkley and a band is coming there to find an intern and Layla goes bonkers about it. Natalie does not like the band or the music they sing as it degrades women. But being a friend she goes.

The bands lead singer Ryan decides he doesn’t like that someone actually could come to see them play and be not thrilled with them. So he does some twisting and they end up with Natalie as their intern. Ryan wants Natalie but he is so screwed up inside. Unbeknown to him Natalie is just as damaged mentally as he is.

Well things really go downhill for these 2 can either of them save each other?
Will Ryan have Natalie?

Pick up your copy of the book and find out. There is no HEA !! and it has a cliffhanger so book 2 here I come.

I gave this book 5 stars as It kept me interested although there is some area’s that could use a little more editing it was a very good book. And the meanings this book is trying to explain are very good also.

4 rocking stars!

I added this one long time ago and I never had the chance to read it, I guess it got lost among all the other books on my TO READ list, but then I got it for free at Amazon and read it AND I liked it very very much. Maybe I was craving some drama, and this was exactly was I was looking for.

The story goes like this; Natalie is a girl who seems like what people call an "uppity bitch" (Steele's words not mine), she seems unapproachable from the outside, but everything is a facade, she's actually very broken on the inside. She lost her parents a few years back and what she's trying to do is go through life without forming any bond that may cause her pain, so she remains unattached, except for her best friend Layla.

Then we have Ryan "Steele", the lead singer in "Steele's Army" a very famous rock band. Steele's life wasn't easy either so he's enjoys a lot his rock star lifestyle.

When they meet, he's offended by her tough exterior, basically with the fact that she seems unaffected by the band fame. He wants to break her, she tries to be strong and shows no weakness to him.

Basically that's the story, but add steamy scenes, great characters and you have an great reading time!

My favorite character was Liam, Ryan's best friend who apparently understands Natalie better that even Ryan. I'm sure there's an interesting story behind.

The worst part was the freaking cliffhanger at the end, so I'm reading the next part immediately!

I received an ARC from a giveaway! I am very new to this so please be patient. I had no clue at the time what an ARC even was. But, anyway once I got it downloaded and figured out how to open it I started reading. This book was so good and emotional. I fell in love with Ryan and Natalie those two have been through the ringer. You have Ryan who is in a famous band and keeps women at bay but shows his emotions of how he feels through his music. Then you have Natalie that is so emotionally closed off from everyone and everything in the world except her BF Layla. I don't want to give any spoilers from this book just know that at the end I was left in tears.

There were a lot of funny, shocking, and emotional parts. The chemistry between Ryan and Natalie is HOT but they both try to fight it. In the end who knows what will happen, you will have to read. It doesn't end the way I was thinking it was going to and I left with tears in my eyes and saying "No" to the computer and trying to hit the page down and the scroll button. Once this book is out for a few days I will come back and add more.

A.L. Wood did an amazing job and I can't wait for more from her. This is her debut book and I am so happy I found her because I'm addicted to this book and I already see I'll be addicted later on when she makes more books.

***ARC given to me by the author for an honest review***
Awesome story! This is the story of a famous Rock Band and one girl that needs to do an internship for College and gets stuck with said Rock Band. First thing I gotta say is that I did not like Steele (lead band singer and main character) in the beginning of the story, of course I fell in love with him by the end, but I hated him for a while. I liked Natalie (main character and intern of the band) and Liam (Steele's best friend and member of the band) and Layla (Natalie's best friend) were my fave characters in the whole book. I loved the friendship between Layla and Natalie and also the friendship between Liam and Steele. Loved those relationships, they seemed very caring and loving. Loved the friction between Steele and Natalie, it made the story of course. Most of the time I didn't know if I wanted to punch him, I did yell at him a few times, lol! He made me angry. But the tension between them was so awesome! You could feel it. MAJOR cliffhanger at the end that made me pull my hair.
Authors writing style is really good. I enjoyed reading this story very much. Will read the next one.

OMG... I was so shocked to got to the end and saw "to be continued ". I had a bad feeling when I got to 75% and they hadn't gotten together. Ryan and Natalie have both had tragic pasts, although in very different ways. Ryan Steele is a big time Rock star- bad boy who meets Natalie at her college where his band is performing. Natalie doesn't care for Steele Army's music, so Ryan decides to try to teach her a lesson. Things go south from there. Ryan and Natalie's pasts are both very heartbreaking and they both use different coping mechanisms to get through the past. Ryan using sex and alcohol and Natalie just closing herself off.

This book isn't bad for a debut novel. It was short and fast read, although I found it had a lot of fillers in it. It could have stood to have more action and less inner dialogue. I do love the dual POV's. So many authors are doing them now a days, I get really disappointed when I don't get inside both MC's heads. I will definitely be on pins and needles waiting for the next book to come out, to see what happens.
