If you want a critical look at Chautauqua, this isn't it. This is a cross between a parochial history and a travel brochure. It is also heavy on the administrative history of the Institution, especially as the chronology progresses. There is not a really clear picture of a typical day at the Institution throughout the twentieth century. All this being said, if you want a flavor of Chautauqua or you are a Chautauquan wanting to know more about the history of the Institution, this is a quick and worthwhile read. The photographs are worth a look all on their own.
This historical treatment of Chautauqua gave me a glimpse into another time and another world. I don't remember when I first heard of it, and it was likely when Bill Clinton was in office and spoke and visited there. I had forgotten that I had a strong desire in the past until I read this and it rekindled the fire of curiosity. It would be nice if all towns had their own Chautauquas. This book will take the reader straight back into the past into a story whose only purpose in being is the betterment of humankind. There are many connections to Chicago and the University of Chicago.
This is just what the doctor ordered if you want to know the history about my favorite place in the whole world! It is filled with great period photos and tells the story of this unique place from its initial beginnings. I loved reading it and will cherish it always...it is the perfect thing to give to those folks who say what exactly is this place you are always talking about? thank you Polly for such a nice gift!
