Duet of the Gods #1

My Song's Curse: Library Edition

Rate this book
Ultimate control has its downside, especially when it comes to romance. But will it be enough to keep them together?

As a siren, Lula Aglaope can bend anyone to her will with the smallest whisper, but she’d give up her power for one meaningful, honest conversation.

She wants a normal life, like the open, true connections the humans seem to pull off with such little effort.

When she meets Alexiares, God of Warding off Wars, all thoughts of normalcy fly out the window. The beautiful demigod cannot be controlled! He’s frustrating, irresistible...and utterly off-limits.

Alex has watched Olympus slowly fall apart. The old gods continue their archaic control of the Universe, denying the progress of humans and other deities. But Alex has plans to repair the damage, and Lula is a major player.

She just doesn’t know it yet.

Falling for her is the worst idea. And just when things move in the right direction, danger arises that no one expects, plunging the sirens into the deadly Olympian spotlight.

With Lula’s sisters missing, and a pile of broken laws surrounding them, will Alex and Lula change the Universe for the better or destroy it?

My Songs Curse was seductive, intoxicating and I was obsessed from just that first page. This was a forbidden love story that wove mythology, friendship and love throughout the pages, and I loved every minute of it. If you enjoy paranormal or adult romance, then you definitely need this book in your life!
Each of us has experienced the same.
Just a taste. I scratch at the tightness below my throat

Lula lived such a lonely life. She couldn't be around humans for long, without them changing or ruining themselves. And with her siren sisters scattered across the globe, she was entirely alone. That was until she met Alex. Alex, aka Alexiares, was a demigod from Olympus. He was the son of Hercules and grandson of Zeus, king of Olympus. He seemed to appear in Lula's life out of nowhere. Yet there were things already in motion. So as we watched the story unfold, through both of their eyes, we got taken on a journey that was mesmerizing.
I cover my hot face with both hands. I don’t want this. The control I possess hangs its heavy weight around my neck, threatening to strangle, and I can’t shrug it off and walk away.

I loved Lula, she was resilient, strong, brave and kind. But she was so lonely. So when Alex walked into her life, everything changed. Being able to have a conversation and kiss someone of their own free will was beyond unique to her. In her 182 years of living, that had never happened. Because when she was around the humans, even a word or laugh from her lips consumed and twisted them. With Alex, she could just be. Yet, them being together was completely forbidden and Lula was unaware of the plans he had for her.
“Godsdammit, Lula, you’re my perfect torture,” he says, breathless.

Alex was sigh and book boyfriend worthy. He was determined, astute, seductive and charming. With being a demigod, so much had been handed to him. Yet Lula was unlike others in Olympus. She didn't bow down to him and she treated him like an equal. And she not only challenged him but enticed him too. Meeting Lula face to face was not part of his plan, at the moment. Yes he had been watching her, but so much was at stake and in play. Yet from the first moment he spoke to Lula, there was no way he could walk away.
There is only this moment. May it last for eternity.

Alex and Lula together were exhilarating. There was so much chemistry between them, that even them making food together felt seductive. But they were forbidden. A siren was not supposed to be with a demigod. And anything more then a kiss could be catastrophic. I loved that they couldn't not touch the other, and as the story progressed their moments together were sizzling sexy *fans face*. But there was so much more going on. There was political intrigue, plots about Olympus, a missing siren and so much unknown. With friendship, laughter and loyalty laced throughout the pages, this book was so much fun!
“I want to experience every inch of you more than anything. Every mysterious thought, every blush, every eye-roll. I’m choosing you.”
My mouth opens even though I haven’t a clue what to say, but speech is impossible anyway because he closes the distance and captures my lips.

My Songs Curse was a forbidden love story that was mesmerizing. The story-line captured my heart and I always had to know what happened next. And with side characters who felt larger then life, I heart Comus and Rath!, this story was so well rounded out. The ending left us at the perfect place. Yes there was still lots up in the air, but we were left beyond happy and at a perfect resting spot. I enjoyed this story so much, and Minix has definitely created a fan for life!

The audiobook is live on audible, and I'm in awe of the narrators, Marie Hawkins and Bradley Ford! They bring so much emotion and life to the book! AND... The audiobook for book 2 will be available this summer!!

Book 2 My Song's Gift is now available on Kindle Unlimited and completes this mythology/fantasy romance!!
My Song's Curse

My Song's Curse (book 1) is all about a siren who can control anyone with her voice, until she meets Alexiares, a demigod who is waging a war against the old Olympian gods. He needs her help, she just doesn't know it yet.

It was a joy to write this forbidden love story and it sets the stage for book 2, where the unexpected gets thrown at Lula and Alex.

Have you read it? I'd super appreciate your review!

I loved this book! I fell in love with both Alex and Lula immediately and couldn't stop reading. Their love is intense, fun, and sexy.
They aren't supposed to fall in love, in fact, it's against the law so of course I'm rooting for them to be happy and beat the odds. I enjoyed the political intrigue and tactical planning of Alex and the young gods. A political uprising, Greek gods, as well as a steamy romance. Yes please, and thank you!

The only bad thing I can say about this book is that it was over. I wanted to live in this world forever.

Hot damn, I couldn’t put this book down.
What a refreshing take on mythology. Beautiful Sirens and sexy Gods. Yes, please. I’m addicted to the characters, including the ones I love to hate.
Lula tugged at my heartstrings. Misplaced, neither truly fitting in with humanity or the gods, she cannot find true love. Her song is her power and torment.
When sexy Alex comes into her life… their chemistry is steamy as hell and beautiful. As fate would have it, their relationship is doomed, forbidden by the most powerful of the gods.
This story is chock full of romance, fun, passion, tension, good vs evil, politics. I’m addicted and eagerly waiting for the next one. I need to know if these two will overcome their odds!

This story is so fresh and unique, it was a true joy to read. Poppy's debut novel is a star illuminating the dusty crevices of Olympus.

I had the great honor of beta-reading My Song's Curse at its inception.

Alex and Lula are an amazing couple, and their chemistry is off the charts hot. Poppy's portrayal of gods, their follies and foibles, and their meddlesome, muddlesome attempts to negotiate the modern world was incredible.

I had to stop and start this a lot (teaching, other books due for pubs, life, etc) but I really enjoyed it! It takes pieces of the mythology you know and adds to it in a rich way. I really liked the hero and heroine as well. Overall, a series I think I will continue!

My New Favorite Paranormal Romance

A wonderful story, in which the paranormal aspect does not overshadow the plot and storytelling. It features compelling characters, lovely description, snappy dialogue, and melt-me steamy moments! A great read!

This book starts off with twists and turns and humor and a voice that catches by the pants and drags you forward. I loved Lula inside the first paragraph and only fell harder for her. She's sweet and sassy and good but with enough edge to keep you satisfied. And Alex is flawed but determined, sexy and a total heart throb. This is one I could easily read over and over again. Cannot wait for the next book! Start writing faster, Minnix.

The interpretation of Sirens and Greek Gods in My Song's Curse was unexpected in all the best ways. Every angle of the characters felt fresh and unique. They jumped off the pages for me. My heart hurt for Lula and getting a peek into this version of Olympus was a blast.
The romance was bitter sweet and I can't wait to see how it all plays out in the next one.

“Being a siren sucks.”
That's the first line of the book, Lula is that siren, and while you might think being able to control people has its perks, you’d be wrong. She’s forever lonely, never able to talk to someone without them falling under her thrall and losing all self-determination. No one can ever love her of their own free will. Being a siren really does suck! Bleh!
Then Alex shows up, a demigod (Zeus’s grandson, in fact) who seems to be immune to her siren song. He kisses her because he wants to, not because he has to (although she does kind of dare him to). Not to mention the challenge of their love being forbidden because...
Well, I won’t spoil any more of the story, because you really need to read it for yourself, but the sparks fly early and often! Alex and Lula’s connection and need for each other is intense, and the way they try to resist what they shouldn’t have is soooo very hot.
While this whirlwind of “we need to get together, we can’t get together” is going on, Alex is trying to make Olympus a better place, and boy does he have a secret or two. His unplanned falling for Lula makes things way more complicated, and while his friends try to keep him on track, he just keeps going back for Lula. The fact he can’t stay away from her manifests in so many sweet moments, and when something particularly horrible happens, his panic to keep Lula safe made me “aw” and cry at the same time.
And then that end! Lest you forgot that Lula is an actual siren, hooo boy do things get way steamy.
This book is the perfect blend of sexy forbidden romance and intriguing political machinations as Alex tries to get his revolution started. I’m already an emotional reader, and the amount of times I found myself sniffling in happiness, cheering them on, or growling in frustration when they faced more obstacles (some their own doing) to them being together was a lot.
The writing is packed full of heart and emotion, and I had no problem feeling the connection between Lula and Alex. The pacing is tight, and some of the power wrangling that could have been boring or melodramatic was handled with a nice touch. There is a whole lot of other drama going on that I don’t want to spoil (hint: other sirens, really old gods), but rest assured there isn’t a dull moment.
Five super red hot and golden stars! I can’t wait for book two!

This may be author Poppy Minnie's debut novel, but it reads like this is her 20th! She has a great writing style, her characters are well developed and fun and the plot is unique and leaves the reader wanting more!

This book introduces us to Lula and Alex and while they may be in the water, the sparks still fly! The reader zooms through the pages so quickly that they immediately want to finish it and start again to see what they missed the first time they read it! The reader becomes a part of the story and this book will leave the reader with a book hangover for sure!

The author does an amazing job of weaving together a tale that leaves the reader feeling a gamut of emotions and she keeps the reader on their toes trying to predict what may happen next in the story! This is a must read and a must read now! Don't hesitate to add this to your TBR list and move it right to the top!

This book was a wonderful blend of fantasy, romance, and suspense. Alexiares and Lula are bound from the start to stay away from each other but they can't. Alex needs her help to ease the tight-fisted reign of Zeus and if Zeus finds out what Alex is up to, well, let's just say pain is a mere word. Things between them don't simply heat up, they sizzle until, well, they get hot, hot, hot. Hopefully, their love for one another can lead to change. I can't wait to read what happens in the next book of this series!!

Lula opens this book with a hilarious voice that keeps you grinning even as she deals with curveball after curveball. As a siren stuck on earth, she finds the world of Greek gods almost as new and mysterious as the reader does. When she meets one in the flesh, she's hooked. Minnix does an amazing job blending sweet-n-spicy romance with complex world building, political drama, and a ton of fun twists on traditional myth. It's a story with a big heart and a whole lot of warmth!

What amazing characters! Lula is strong and powerful, yet her vulnerability shines through. Is it any wonder Alex falls for her? Yet, such a pairing is forbidden as this is no usual boy meets girl type scenario - she’s a Siren and he’s a Greek god!

I really enjoyed this story. The passion between Lula and Alex is on another level, the obstacles in their way in the form of political intrigue and wrathful gods is so suspenseful. If this were a TV show it would have you shouting at the TV screen like all good dramas. I can’t wait to find out if love will conquer all. Is the next book out yet? Can we have it asap? Pretty please?

I think I've got a case of godlust now...

Overall this book was fabulous! Sirens, demigods, otherworldlings...I'm sold! Sign me up for the next book already. The two POVs flowed well with each other, alternating chapters. I enjoy when multiple POVs are used as it adds a nice depth to the story line, then I don't feel like I'm missing anything. The banter between both Alex and Lu is great, I really enjoyed the course of their relationship.

Now, the nitpicky stuff. The writing felt...clunky at times. I felt like I was tripping while trying to run over the words of this story because the anticipation made me want know what happened next. I just wish the writing was more...seamless. Now, I know I said I enjoyed the course of Alex and Lu's relationship and I did! BUT, how many times do they really need to go back and forth? No, I just can't! Oh wait, yes I can! No...I can't! It was really the worst part for me. Thankfully, they got over that!

With all that said, I am definitely looking forward to the next book :)

Thank you LibraryThing and City Owl Press for providing me an advanced e-copy to read and review honestly.

Oh my goodness. This book was 😍. It was so good. It left me absolutely speechless. There was so much happening, not a minute went by that i felt that i wanted to stop or put it down. I did not expect to like this book at all, but i was so pleased. The main character has a strong personality, but is vulnerable. For a mythological creature, she is relatable. The MMC was…somewhere in between exciting, and teetered on the edge of “gimmie a break 🙄” but mostly likeable, minus how he handles secrets. The scene’s between the two were intense, and im so glad the characters got a chance to actually get to know eachother instead of the usual insta-love in fantasy romances. I really cant wait to see what comes next. (Mostly for my favorite character, Rath, but for everyone else too 😱)

This got a 5 star review from me, really more of a 4.5, but leaning on the pleasant side. It was such a ride, and i have not had an author captivate me in the way this one managed in a long time. Somehow i find myself invested in every character, and am really excited for the story to continue to unfold.

I really loved this book which merged the sirens into the tales of the gods in Olympus and a love story altogether in a complex story that because quite addictive the further I got into the book. I really liked that Lula was trying to use her ability to achieve positive things and that she did her best not to speak to people unless she had to. Well written and easy to read, I'm definitely addicted and can't wait to find out what happens next.

really good

I enjoyed the world building in this book so much. There’s still so much to learn and uncover, but the time spent unfurling the lore of Olympus and the Sirens is well done.

I love Lula and Alex together too, and the secondary relationships really add to the story and character development.

I’m hoping to see more world building and strengthening of secondary relationships in the second book

Perfect blend of mythology and romance with a modern edge. The author took some creative liberties with greek lore that was so, so fun. Following Alex and his guys through their plans to upend Zeus made me team #sexygods all the way. Lulu grabbed my heart and I love the creative twist on sirens.
This is a book I'll reread and can't wait for the second.

My Song's Curse is such a cool story that brings a fresh twist on mythology along with satisfying infusions of steam and humor. Alex and Lula are both great characters whose top-notch chemistry is fueled by terrific world building, taut pacing, and a deft sense of place that offers the perfect blend of fantastical and contemporary elements.

It's impossible not to get swept away in this utterly lovable story and the characters who populate it. I mean, who wouldn't swoon for a hot Greek god who's alpha in all the right ways and also uses portal travel to bring you takeout from all over the world? Little moments like these lend a special charm to My Song's Curse that distinguish it as so special. An impressive debut and I can't wait for the next installment in the series.

Overall I really enjoyed My Song's Curse. While demons, gods, and sirens aren't new territory in the books I ready Minnix does a great job keeping the characters and mythology fresh and interesting. Lula is a character you can relate to without seemingly overly Mary Sue-esque, which could have easily happened. Alex and his friends are tons of fun to read about. I'll definitely be waiting for book two.

Fabulous read! Demigods, Sirens, and danger oh my!

The attraction between Lula and Alex was HOT! They truly have a connection and it was fun to see that blossom as the story progressed. The story is engaging and I love the mythology woven throughout. From beginning to end, this book will have you on the edge of your seat. Those sex scenes will have you wanting more! Alex and his friends are dreamy and totally book boyfriend worthy! There is also a great balance between action and steamy in this book. I also have to take a moment to appreciate that cover! It’s gorgeous and very eye catching!

A fantastic debut for Miss Minnix! The story is well written with some wonderful characters that you’ll quickly become attached to. I love her storytelling style and anxiously await more from her! If you’re a fan of fantasy and mythology, this book is for YOU! I give this 5 stars.

This is a sweet, sensual and beautiful tale interwoven with mythology. This book takes mythology and builds upon it creating a story that is amazing and seems like it could take place among Greek mythology stories. I love any stories that deal with mythology and this has been the best one I’ve read so far. I love the relationships and bonds that form between our siren and the three guys.

I can’t wait to see what happens in the rest of the series! If you’re looking for a romance book based in mythology this is definitely a book you need to read!

Under the world we all know, creatures of legend walk among us. Minnix unapologetically tips off the mask that blinds us mortals to reveal Lula, a Siren straight from myth. But even she us blind to the machinations of even greater beings, the Gods themselves. Alex and Lula are star-crossed lovers, the heat between them leaping off the page as they both contend with the worlds they're forced to navigate. Exciting read with the promise of much more to come!

A fun, Greek god themed romance that packed a punch with the ending.

I'll be honest, I began this read enjoying it, but not feeling particularly drawn to the characters. Around 50%, WOW. I fell in love. Couldn't put the book down and I can't wait to read the sequel!
A siren and a Greek gods aren't allowed to be together... but they can't stay apart.
If you want to read a romance with Greek gods acting like Greek gods, this is the one for you!
