In this friends-to-lovers Regency romance by Charlie Lane, an independent lady and a cautious earl must do the most daring thing of all—fall in love.

A daring lady.
A caring earl.
And a Christmas house party that turns love into a dangerous game.

The Earl of Abbington is not a daring man.

Responsible for the care of an opium-addicted uncle, George’s life poses dangers to a bride that he’ll never risk. It’s why he avoided the independent and kind Lady Jane last year, despite her brother’s request he protect her during her season. His neglect no doubt led to Jane’s tattered reputation. In reparation, he’s sent pre-approved suitors to the house party to ensure she marries well, not to a man whose life is a nightmare.

Lady Jane is done being daring.

Her daring spirit ruined her reputation, her family’s social standing, and her brother’s marital prospects. But a Christmas house party attended by a coterie of willing suitors can put everything right. Plain of face and ordinary of intellect, Jane knows she’ll never find love. And she doesn’t want it anyway. Love is the most daring thing a woman can do, after all. Instead, she’ll develop a system to test her suitors and discover the best husband for a practical sort of marriage.

Jane needs George’s help choosing a husband, but George soon realizes he can’t give it without betraying his own heart. Together, they must find the courage to face the dangers of love or lose the love of a lifetime.

A Dare Too Far is a lovely historical romance that follows Lady Jane and her brother’s best friend George, The Earl of Abbington as Jane seeks, with George’s assistance, a husband. I so enjoyed reading Jane’s story, especially after she put herself in a precarious situation in the last book in pursuit of her friend. Now the focus of a scandal and facing ruination, Jane has a brief time to find a husband, and several men stay at her family’s home to court her and win her hand and large dowry. Jane knows she has to marry to avoid being completely ruined, but she isn’t happy about it.

George is Jane’s brother’s best friend and has known Jane for years. He offers to help Jane find a match, but never expected his feelings for her to deepen. Jane is off-limits, but will George be able to resist, especially when he learns Jane might return his feelings?

Jane and George have a great friends-to-lovers, brother’s best friend romance. Though the men courting her are, for the most part, honorable men, it’s clear that Jane’s connection with George is much stronger than anything she feels for the other men. I love how their friendship slowly progresses and how both characters finally realize they have more than friends feelings for each other. They have so many humorous and flirty scenes that I adored!

I also love all the references to poetry throughout the book and how George uses poems to express his feelings. He is not a demonstrative man, but when he finally admits his feelings for Jane, he finds the best ways to express his feelings. This aspect of the story is positively swoon-tastic, and it shows just how deeply George and Jane care for each other.

The characters in the story, especially Jane and George, are well-developed and layered. George has a lot of responsibility, especially in regards to his opium-addicted uncle. He doesn’t want to marry because of his uncle’s unpredictability, and yet he deeply wants Jane. He is responsible and honorable, and he is often conflicted between duty and desire. Jane is stubborn, strong-willed, and on a deadline. She knows she must marry to avoid complete ruination, but her heart is not in it. Both characters have dynamic families, and their relationships with their relatives are put to the test. Infidelity, addiction, caretaking responsibilities, loss, and more are addressed and really show how loyal, dedicated, and loving Jane and George are in all aspects of their life.

I enjoyed this addition to The Debutante Dares series. It has layered characters that you root for, a few nefarious antagonists that are fun to hate, and a romance that will make you swoon! I would definitely recommend the book to readers of historical romance.

Slow and Boring!!

Jane who we meet in bk.1 Daring the Duke of The Debutante Dares, is now embroiled in a scandal and must marry. Her father has doubled her Dowry to acquire her a suitable husband. The banter of the characters is immature and at times silly.

The second book in Lane's The Debutante Dares series, A Dare Too Far feels remarkably similar to the first book - and not always in a good way.

My review of the first book basically came down to the word "adorable." It was not the most exciting story, but it was cute enough. The choice to make this book a little darker and a bit more dramatic was definitely a good one, but I still had an issue with these protagonists reading almost as teenagers throughout the book. I don't know what it is about Lane's characters, but they all feel like they are sixteen until the steamy scenes remind us that they are in fact actually adults.

In a similar vein, the central couple of this book - Jane and George - felt like they are just carbon copies of the couple from the first book. There was really nothing to me that distinguished them as individuals that were facing a completely different set of circumstances.

On a positive note, there were some really creative house party scenes that I thought were great fun. Once we left the house party, however, we got a series "I love you" and "No, I can't be with you" scenes that go back and forth far too many times. I had hoped that centering this book in Christmas would have mitigated that by providing a hard deadline of sorts, but alas.

This might not have been a home run for me, but considering that more books in this series are coming, there is certainly an audience out there for this. I wish them all happy reading!

Thank you to NetGalley and WOLF Publishing for an ARC of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review!

To save her friend from marriage to the wrong man, Lady Jane Crenshaw has ruined her own reputation. George, Lord Abbington, was suppose to keep an eye on her and feels responsible for her downfall. He decides to select three gentlemen as suitors to save her reputation. Jane cannot make up her mind on which one to marry. She comes up with a plan. Give each gentleman tests to score points in her decision. George does not like where this is going. He realizes he wants her for himself, but circumstances make it impossible. He wants Jane to believe in love, she wants him to believe they should be together.
The pace is little slow. George is on again, off again with commitment. A little frustrating to read. Most of the characters are likeable, even with all their quirky personalities.

Sorry, I just couldn't finish this. It just went on and on and on with the same problems being hashed over again and again. But 60 percent through, I just didn't care of the H and h ever got together for their HEA. It wasn't badly written, but, in addition to the repetitiveness, I had a problem with the degree of "informality" between the MCs and "steam" scenes. Didn't appeal to me. Can't recommend. I give it two stars only for NOT being full of typos, bad grammar, and poor sentence structure. #NetGalley #ADareTooFar

Thank you to WOLF Publishing for letting me read an ARC of this amazing historical fiction, romantic book by Charlie Lane!

"Some instinct, deep and unavoidable, rooted her in place, drew her nearer him"

"Sleep claimed him , and a pair of mobile red lips pressed against his in the darkness of his dreams"

"Falling in love was just the most daring thing a woman could do"

This book is exactly what I was looking for to get into the Christmas mood!
For every fan of Bridgerton or Tessa Dare this is the book for you.
A beautiful love story starting from friends-to-lovers that get in way deeper than expected involving important themes such as drugs abuse and addiction and loss as well as death.
Those themes are as relevant in the plot as the romance is and I deeply appreciated that.
I really liked the characters and I will say that their resilience and their strength really inspired me.
Of course I may have fallen for a certain Sir , described as a knight in shining armour ready to protect his damsel (who's everything but in distress) but at the same time has an hunted past and some secrets that he doesn't want to be out.
Jane is an amazing leading female character. Her passion, her charisma and her sweetness in approaching people facing hard times, is admirable and her heart is immense.
The devotion she shows and the determination in helping people in need doesn't waver , not even in the darkest hours !
I'm so thankful I had the chance to read this book and I'm really looking forward to reading a possible next one!

"She'd know who to marry before she crept into bed that very night"

"She wanted the almost-impossible-to-resist dare of him gone"

"Damnation and hell and all the demons of Hades"

"You stick in a man's mind like the perfect first words of a poem"

A great second book in the series as we see another debutant wallflower finding her match. I enjoy this authors world-building and depth to the characters. I always feel more connected to a story when we have alternate POV which this story does and the characters are realistic. There was not a lot of romance during the story as Lady Jane Crenshaw attempts to find the perfect spouse via discussions, tests, and kisses. Lord George Abbington has always avoided thinking about marriage, his obligations to his uncle made marriage a wish but not reality, but if he did think about marriage he thought Lady Jane would be the perfect wife. When he shows up at Lady Jane's estate near Christmastime he decides none of Jane's suitors are meant for her - yet he has difficulty figuring out a way he can be with Jane.

The chemistry between the two is ever present and Lady Jane takes to carnal relations with excitement-she is no shy virgin.

Now the question is will these two find a way to be together or are they forever meant to be apart.

I recommend this book and series - the stories draw you in and keep you engaged.

A Dare To Far is book two in Charlie Lane's The Debutante Dares series. A delightfully witty story centered around a holiday house party where Lady Jane must choose her future husband. The Earl of Abbington, a close family friend who happened to select several of the gentleman suitors, is not amused with how Jane decides to go about making her final decision. Those who love opposites attract, friends to lovers stories will not be disappointed.

In A Dare Too Far, Charlie Lane has written a funny, tantalizing, friends-to-lovers Regency romp! Witty dialogue and beguiling characters make it an incredible, sexy page-turner. Lane is wonderful at weaving passion and vulnerability in her novels. And Dare is a special delight for those who love the best friend's little sister element.

I really liked the first one but this one not so much. It’s not often you wish it was a novella instead but this was quite repetitive and I found it boring. The house party at the start had me wonder when Chris Harrison was going to arrive 🙄

I received a free copy from NetGalley, and this is my freely given review.

This seems a rather sweet story of friends to lovers. Jane had ruined herself with her poorly thought out plan to help Tabitha, in the first book of this series. As a consequence, she is being pressed to marry, to restore her reputation. For one, she wants her own home and family; she is not happy with the current situation with her young stepmother. For another, her loss of reputation appears to be a barrier to her brother's suit for the young woman of his choice.

Lord Devon, the brother of Tabitha's duke, is not an option for marriage, despite three proposals on his part, and being part of her ruin. So Jane's family hosts a house party before Christmas with various suitors. She must decide one one of them to marry before Christmas.

George, Lord Abbington, has been best friends with Jane's brother for years, and it was obvious from the first book that he cares for Jane. But he has serious doubts about being involved with any woman for marriage because of his own personal situation caring for an ill and unpredictable family member. Also, let's not forget, best friend's sisters are off limits. Instead, he tries to help by sending three men he thinks would be good husband options to the party. But when he arrives to see how things are going, he finds he does not want Jane to choose someone else.

There is an interesting tug of war between Jane and George's developing relationship. She did not want a marriage based on love because of what she observed in her parents marriage, and her father's current marriage. What she feels for George nearly scares her into choosing what the thinks is a safe option. He was scared to hope for a future with her. Then, when it became an option, he became scared for her and potential risk to her by exposing her to the responsibilities he took on, caring for his loved one.

But ultimately, they both decided to take the risk that what they had was greater than their fears. A beautiful part of the story for me was the realization on George's part that it's not okay to shoulder some burdens alone, and it is healthy to ask for help. The relationship with his sister is a lovely thing, and her relationship with her husband sounds lovely and inspiring, though deeply sad as well. But it also showed Jane the strength love is capable of.

This was at times a sad story to read, for various reasons. Maybe it touched me a bit more, having worked with so many people who have issues with substances, and this was amplified during COVID19, and also a few friends and family also affected now and in the past, and how this has affected their loved ones. But I found that intertwined in George and Jane's story very affecting.

It is also a good reminder of how strong relationships also make us stronger as people too.

Four out of five stars.

Should I give this story just four stars for the inconsistency of the spelling of Edmund's name (Edmund/Edmond) or the too modern language of ass over arse? I do like the language to be of the time, but that's a personal preference. The answer to both of these question is yes. But the story was so good and I got so caught up in the whirlwind of it all, that those two issues paled almost to obscurity.

This is a friends-to-lovers trope. I'm usually not a big fan of them, but if they were all like this one, I'd be sorely tempted to change my mind about it.

We meet Lady Jane Crenshaw in the first novel of the series Daring the Duke. She and her two friends, Tabitha and Lillian, are daredevils. They dare each other into doing things that are often questionable and skirt the edges of propriety. Well, she's got herself in a situation now with being ruined from her excursion with Lord Devon in the first book and is now desperate for a husband. Needless to say, her choices are limited. Her brother, Edmund and his friend, George, are spearheading the house party that takes place around Christmas. Jane is just doing what she has to do to make a good, practical choice. She's ruined, so love has no place in this charade.

She and George have known each other for years and when he finds out that she ventured out alone to get mistletoe, he goes after her only to have her fall out of a tree and land on top of him. He's injured now and has to stay at the house party to recuperate rather than go spend the holiday with his sister and her husband.

Things really make a dramatic turn from there. They get to know each other like never before. Some of their conversations are humorous. He's trying to keep himself out of the loop of the few suitors while basically coaching her and keeping tallies of this and that with the games she plays with these guys. It was remarkable how well he kept himself at bay all while knowing he was in love with her and had been for a long time. He had a reason he couldn't marry her himself and even when he thought he could, he couldn't.

He was so torn between what he thought was right and what he wanted and what she wanted, it made my heart ache. Throw in some game show type antics with her suitors and some steam with George, and you've got a heck of a read.

I loved this book and am excited to read the next in the series.

*This book is part of a series and I do recommend reading Daring the Duke, the first book in the series, but you won't be totally lost if you don't. You'll have a lot more appreciation for Jane, if you do.

I really enjoyed this romance between the daring lady Jane and Lord Abbington (Sir George).
I was enthralled from the beginning and it was very lighthearted to start with but then it kind of took a bit of a darker more dramatic turn when his fears are shown in a very though way.

The story starts where the previous romance “Daring a Duke” ended.
Jane was ruined when she hid in Lord Devon’s carriage traveling to help Tabitha in her time of need.
Now she is forced to find a husband and get married. She has to get her reputation repaired so that her brother Lord Edmund can marry the woman he loves. Lady Katherine’s father withdrew his approval of the marriage after the ruination of Lady Jane.
Now she has five suitors vying for her hand in marriage and she has to choose before Christmas.
She is afraid to marry for love since she has seen a lot of heartbreak throughout her life so she is looking for a comfortable marriage with a man she can’t fall for.
But what happens when Sir George her brothers best friend and a man she has known all her life suddenly shows up and changes everything? Can she open her heart to love or is she too scared?
George also has his problems and skeletons in the closet so is he willing to risk her safety even though his heart is already hers?

Jane and George is so amazing together and their chemistry is of the chart. This romance gets very steamy and they are very daring out in the open where they could be spotted at anytime.
But I unfortunately had to withdraw a star because they are so stubborn that they only want to see the truth from their point of view instead of listening to each other. It was like they went around with blinders on and something really dramatic had to happen to open their eyes to the world and see that there are choices and people who are willing to help them.

Lady Jane puts the suitors into a lot of competitions while they live at her brothers residency and she is really trying to figure out who is the right one for her but she is always distracted by Sir George which creates so many hilarious situations. Lord Devon keeps proposing to her and she keeps letting him down because Lillian, her best friend, is in love with him and he doesn’t look at Lillian the same way, or does he;-)?
I can’t wait to see what happens in Lillian’s book that comes out in March 2022:-)!

I can definitely recommend this book.

Lady Jane must marry. She made a foolish dare last season when she went away with Lord Devon to bring her friend Tabitha back and now she’s ruined. So no more dares for her… She must become a respectable lady and choose among the suitors his brother’s friend Lord Abbington procured for her. How difficult can it be? There’s a logical way to proceed, of course. Comfort, shared interest and kisses are the most important things in a marriage, after all, and she must test every suitor for that. Love? Love can only bring pain, so it’s out of the equation.
Lord Abbington failed in his task to protect Jane last season. Her brother asked him to, but he wasn’t comfortable around her… It is entirely possible he was harboring budding feelings for the daring debutante. But love for him is out of question. He has responsibilities, he can’t afford to bring a wife in his chaotic life… So now he must help her choose a suitable husband. But why is it so difficult to see her losing her daring ways and settling down with another man?
This compelling book is basically the story of two scared people who must dare themselves to love. As always, Charlie Lane did a wonderful job at creating very realistic characters, so much so that they were so infuriating at times that I would have liked to be able to knock some sense into them! This book has a lot of humor, but a good dose of angst as well. I’d say that’s the right balance between the two that makes it very enjoyable indeed. I also loved the bits of poetry the author inserted into the story. I knew John Donne only by name, but never read anything of him. I was captivated by his poetry and by the way it fitted in the book as a glove. And if there’s a thing I enjoy more than reading it is learning new things from the books I read! Now I’m looking forward to the next book of the series, because I’m sure the last of the daring debutantes won’t disappoint me…

I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher, via NetGalley. This in no way impacted on my view.

After her reputation is destroyed all because she ran after her friend in the company of Lord Devon, Lady Jane knows that she will need to marry, if not for herself, but for her brother's happiness. Over the Christmas period, there's a house party planned, in which Jane has the chance to meet some suitors who aren't bothered by her reputation, and and can pick someone to marry. Her friend, George, Earl of Abbington, has been helpful in finding suitors, but when he is injured at the event, and needs to rest, Jane finds it hard to focus on her task, and instead spend her time with George. And for George, too, he's regretting the fact he brought men to meet Jane, when he realises that the only person he wants her to marry is himself.

I knew when I read Daring the Duke that Jane and George would be the protagonists of their own story. It was clear that there was a chemistry and attraction between them, and I loved their banter in this book. Something really refreshing, too, was that George was the first one to realise his own feelings, and really fight to show Jane he wanted to marry her and would do right by her. There are some difficult topics discussed, particularly loss and addiction, which allowed the characters to seem more real. Though there were many twists and turns towards the happy ending, Jane and George's story was sweet, and definitely perfect for the couple.

I didn't like this book as much as I liked the first one, I feel the story didn't captivate me enough, but I loved our main couple.
I thought the author made a great best friends to lovers story and still managed to put the cliché I fell in love with my best friend's sister in the story in a different way that I liked.
I liked that the book's problems don't come from where you expect.
For me the beginning and end of the book are the best parts, I thought the middle was kind of boring.
I loved the focus the book brings about facing your fears, and how to allow yourself to love despite everything is worth it in the end.
The book also talks about addiction, so if this is a trigger for you go into this books knowing that, I can't say if the representation of addiction here was well done but I liked seeing it this theme in the way the author did here in a period romance book, I think it makes a cool difference for the story.
The book is set around Christmas time so it's a perfect read to do now in December!

Lady Jane has a substantial dowry and only a week to choose a husband. George, her brother’s best friend, has put together some decent suitors and they are all at her home. George came to check on how things were going, planning to leave right away. Instead he ended up recovering from catching Jane when she fell from a tree directly on him. George is attracted to Lady Jane but Uncle Neville lives with him and he feels his uncle is his responsibility. Neville raised him but now his terrors and opium addiction is unpredictable and he fears for Jane to be in his house. Jane has no intention of marrying any of the suitors but goes through various ploys to make George jealous. Her on and off decision to marry George and then his on and off decision to not marry Jane got a little old for me.

This book is the second installment of the “Debutante Dares” series. This book can definitely be read as a stand-alone, as I did not read the first one.

Lady Jane Crenshaw needs a husband, as her reputation has been ruined. The Earl of Abbington, George promised her brother that he would protect her and he feels like he failed, so he proposes Jane to choose from three suitors during a house party. However, George soon discovers he has feelings for Jane about the same time as the suitors do not measure up. George has reservations about a marriage and goes back and forth on whether or not he should marry Jane.

Ein Wagnis zu viel (Die waghalsigen Debütantinnen 2)

ELYIAvor 2 Minuten

Jane believes she is the definition of "Plain Jane," being nothing special to look at and having average intelligence. She has been overlooked on the marriage mart forcing her into the life of a spinster wallflower. But, after ruining her reputation, she must stop her hoyden ways, stop with the dares, and simply marry anyone who will have her. George, being a family friend, has offered to help her, but it turns out they have both long suppressed feelings for each other. Jane is surrounded by the damage love can bring; her father's devastation at her mother's loss and marrying a woman he doesn't love, George's uncle who heals his widowed heart with an opium addiction, George's sister who is watching her beloved husband slowly die, and her lonely mother-in-laws sister. Jane is determined to avoid love and simply marry for the security, children and a family, and to get out of her father's home. I loved Jane. She loves deeply and genuinely cares for others. George is quite the same; he loves his family and will do anything to take care of them, including taking care of his opium addicted uncle who wakes in the night with dangerous night terrors. But when he has to watch Jane find a suitor among the men he has sent to the house party, he is forced to recognize his desire to take Jane for himself. Just when Jane is done with daring behavior, George dares her to fall in love with him. It is frustrating that they cannot get their timing right, but I didn't find is too angsty and still enjoyed the story. One other thing that bothered me a bit was the fact that they slept together before their marriage and it didn't really seem to bother Jane...in fact, she was not worried about what anyone would say or if any other suitor would have her anymore!

I enjoyed George as well. He was starchy but without being a jerk about it. He has been taking care of his Uncle for as long as he can remember and he is clearly fearful of what happens during his Uncle's night terrors. But he can't keep the burden to himself and thankfully, he eventually finds the ability to ask for help so he can have his HEA as well.

The Steam
There are a couple of steamy scenes, lots of passion, a steamy letter, and an enjoyable carriage ride.

An enjoyable but saucy Regency romance

I quite enoyed this Regency friends-to-lovers romance. After Lady Jane is discovered travelling with a man who is not her relative or husband and her reputation is in tatters, she must marry. Lord Abbington, her childhood friend and BFF of her brother sends her suitors to pick before Christmas. Some mistletoe, a tree root and a naughty roll in the hay later both Jane’s and George’s life are both upended. While I did want to smack George with a pan once or twice, his qualms over bringing a wife somewhere an erratic drug addict lives were understandable. I loved Jane’s debutante dares and her daring herself. The bachelor trials and interviews were hilarious and naughty nuggets surprising in Regency, but fun. Recommended for lovers of later Regency romcoms with headstrong heroines that do not follow convention.

I received a copy of this book from the author, the second in The Debutante Dares series. Apparently, I’m reading this series in reverse order. Luckily, that doesn’t matter. Although I really enjoyed this story, I wasn’t quite as impressed as I was by Kiss or Dare, Lillian and Devon’s story. This one focuses on George and Jane, both of whom are afraid of love because of the risk of pain, but both for different reasons. It’s not surprising that once George convinces Jane to take a chance on love, he panics and pulls back and she has to convince him. Her way of doing so is clever and I found it amusing. Both George and Jane have to come to terms with their own definitions of courage versus cowardice and face their own cowardly actions to choose courage.
