I’ve watched from the sidelines as my friends found themselves bound to the same agathos. I’ve stood aside and wondered if she was mine. I’ve watched, I’ve waited, I’ve hurt. And I’ve wondered. Finally, the time for all that is over now. I’ve arrived in Greece and it’s time to find out if a little of my soul belongs to an agathos too. And if it is… How can I live with that? Knowing what the agathos have done? The pain they’ve caused me? And if I let myself fall in love with Grace… How long will the gods let me keep her?
Dare Not is the fourth book in the State of Grace series. It is a slow burn reverse harem (MMFMM) romance suitable for readers 18+
State of Grace reading order:
1. Run Riot 2. Silver Bullet 3. Wild Game 4. Dare Not 5. Saving Grace
Colette Rhodes is a paranormal romance author from New Zealand. She loves to write about love in all its forms, and adores imperfect heroes and heroines who find perfection in each other. You’ll often find her trying to justify her degree by including ancient history and mythological influences in her work.
If she’s not writing, then you’re almost certain to find her reading—ideally with a cup of tea in hand and a scented candle burning to match the mood.
Although I really enjoyed this series in the beginning, I'm not very excited about where it is going. The story is very lopsided, favoring some characters over others and I'm basically reading the next one to see how the series ends.
This was a really rough ride. Brutal. The author is definitely heartless (I’m kidding. Sort of).
I devoured this book and finished it within hours. I couldn’t stop reading. The drama, the suspense, the action, and the misery were all absolute. There were times I wanted to throw my kindle and DNF the story because it was so merciless.
This is why I only read it days before the release of the last book. I might die before it comes out though.
On another note, there was a MM relationship in this book that started making me uncomfortable. Wild and Bullet…when something happens to Bullet, Wild loses his mind and completely stops caring about Grace. At one point he actually puts Grace in danger and risks her life to save Bullet. Sure, he feels vaguely guilty later, but does that really matter?
Wild is also completely jealous over Bullet in a way he isn’t with Grace. So he’s bonded to Grace, but loves and wants Bullet more? That’s kinda how it feels and I’m not down with that. It definitely feels like Wild loves and covets Bullet in a way he doesn’t with Grace.
By the end of this book I felt like the only one of Grace’s bonded who actually loved and wanted her was Riot. Possibly Dare, but he had one foot in and one foot out throughout the entire book. I’m gonna need more convincing beyond ‘last minute regrets’ at the end.
(Had to change the rating from 3 to 4 stars bc even tho the characters can be annoying, the book still brings me a lot of joy 💕)
I don't know how everything went to shit so fast... but damn.
The plot is getting more interesting and complex, which is a good thing since the romance is weird and poorly developed. I came for the soul bonds and stayed for the fantasy plot, who would've thought? 🤣
(I am now and forever a proud supporter of Riot's supremacy 💕)
I’m on a kick of writing reviews for a full series because my current thinking is if the first book is awesome, but the series sucks, you can get sucked in for no reason, so I’m trying to put the review as whole and then rate the books individually to help 🤷🏻♀️
I really enjoyed the series. It was much more hopeful, loving and fun than I thought it would be.
Imagine that living amongst us today are both agathos and daimons. Beings whose soul purpose is to either help humanity or guide them to destruction. Our girl, Grace, is an agathos—Born to be the embodiment of all things good and pure and righteous BUT her main “purpose” in life has been to find her “bonded” and now at 25 everyone in her community just assumes she is broken, and then she meets Riot (a Daimon) and her whole world flips upside down.
I loved how clearly planned and thought out this series was. Could it have done with some editing? Absolutely, but overall, everything that happened in what becomes a mythological epic story makes sense to the characters and the original structure of the story.
Run Riot: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Silver Bullet: ⭐️⭐️ (slower plot) Wild Game: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Dare Not: ⭐️⭐️ (couldn’t figure out the point) Saving Grace: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (would have been 4 if the ‘separation trope’ didn’t exist for more than half of the novel)
Overall series rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ HEA.
Content/Trigger Warning: clear purity culture/religious theology allegory, reverse harem relationship, MMF relationship within the harem; religious sacrifice, ceremonies etc. super steamy scenes for all characters.
Ok. This book, although I still am losing faith or attention to the series, actually made me cry at the end so, it gets 3 stars for envoking an emotional response from me.
Honestly, the story keeps dragging on and on.... What us this? Book 3 or 4? Too long.
I finished this a few hours ago, and I think I finally have figured my feelings for this book in specific.
I love this series. It could be my all-time favorite, god-tier, and all. Unfortunately, I do feel like this book was a bit lacking at some points. It could've been me, it could've been the book.
First, I would like to say: I love shorter books. 200-300 are ALWAYS great and I can never complain. But I did not understand why this book was just short of 300 pages. I do feel like the author was able to make it not feel like it was lacking, but I also wish that there were more pages. Maybe less time skips around the boat scene (not that there's much you can do with a few hours, but still). There's enough story and discussions in this book to warrant at least 30 more pages.
Another thing is: I love Dare, and I love the other characters. But, please, give him more. I don't think that his character is lacking─I just feel that, as a last addition to the story, he shouldn't be considered one of the guys that Grace has fell in love with. Just saying.
Wild's connection with her was also faster than the others because they had a lot of things to deal with, so once he let go he LET GO. But they had a deeper understanding of each other. She found a way to speak to him that he never considered using. She gave him the chance of being heard even when he wasn't able to speak, so the love itself can be explained. Plus, he still can't talk about his feelings, so you can't say there's anything fast there.
There is a balance with the relationships that I will always appreciate: Riot and Grace were very hesitant with each other, but interested in trying. Bullet and Grace had a one-sided connection that had to be addressed. It wasn't always perfect, and they had to go through a few hoops before being fully able to say that there was nothing stopping them from being them. Wild and Grace was a "will they won't they?" because who knew if Wild was ever going to accept what he was to Grace and what she was to him?
And, yes, Dare completed what Grace was missing. She became more assured just by having him with her. That still doesn't create love, specially when you are surrounded by partners that already love you fully. And having them just be in love without getting to know each other for a while more makes so Dare's concerns are more than reasonable.
I did not like the other's POV's. They were necessary, gave context and everything. But I can understand them without having to like it.
I'm quite sure that I had another thing to say, but I forgot it. So, fare well. I'm giving this a 4.25 because my criticisms came AFTER I read it, so they can't take out how much I actually enjoyed this book.

This book was by far the most intense, action packed, and emotional of the four books so far. That cliffhanger was nail biting! April can't come fast enough. Eagerly awaiting book five now to see how this all comes together.
Genuinely almost DNF'd this one, which is annoying because I immediately fell in love with Dare when we met him in Book 1 and have been patiently waiting for his turn. Colette Rhodes did him so dirty- we barely get to know him and just the utter insanity of everything else happening in this book- it was one outrageous thing after another and Dare is just, "omg I love her, but wait I just met her, so it must be fake, but wait she's so pretty" and I just wanted to chuck this book away. Will I still read Book 5? Probably, the cliff hanger at the end of this book was too wild for me to not get closure, but I'll be tempering my expectations.
How can a full harem orgy put the reader to sleep?? I waited 4 books for things to really heat up & it was seriously lacking. 😐 Not sure if I'll even bother to read the final book if all the romance is going to be as basic and boring as this one. Dare is basically repeating Grace's concerns word for word from book 1.
Finally Grace’s fourth bond comes into the picture. His world literally crumbles while his soul bond is across the world in Greece fighting off angry goddesses and giant scorpions. If his life couldn’t get worse he actually barely makes it to Greece surviving a plane crash after the goddess has a tantrum. Neither Dare nor Grace fight this bond and because they both are going through so much, they come together like a needle and thread. As of things can’t get worse the reality slaps them in the face as Grace takes on the role of prophetess and then all the bonds are cut potentially angering the Fates now too. It’s all hot mess and not just cause the gang went to the underworld 🤣🤣 one more book to see of Grace and company can save the world. As usual, no pressure!
For those following along, Grace has finally connected with her 4th and final soul bond. So, we get our HEA, right? Wrong!
Vengeful goddesses and the end of days are all they get. While some will lose what feels like everything, others will gain a freedom they never thought they would have. But the trials are not over. Grace has more obstacles on her quest to fulfill the prophecy and save the world. Can she do it without losing everything?
Ok this is getting seriously weird plot-wise. So many unpredictable (but also not credible) twists and turns. And this series has a serious case of “all tell no show”.
Why are there so many gods in the kitchen? Do we need that many? I didn’t know I was getting into a “on the sidelines” gods mythology retelling??? What on earth is happening?
I wanted a fantasy / opposite sides / why choose / tension-ridden series. All I’m getting right now is fluffy mythological challenges.
The emotional rollercoaster this book put me through is akin of the biggest thrills in any amusement park. I feel like I was put into a commercial washing machine in the highest setting. However, it is one of the best series I have ever read. It’s like new adult version of percy jackson on steroids and with even more powerful gods. I’m actually loving every second of this story and honestly just waiting for the end to put it into my favorites list. I’m really hoping the last book delivers a proper and fulfilling ending to such amazing series. I will be starting the last installment right now and prying to the gods that the author doesn’t let me down.
I just love this series so much. I think this was a great installment that a good mix of plot, character development, and spice. There are some good twists and turns in this one as well and I’m absolutely heartbroken over the biggest twist. I think this is such a fresh take on Greek mythology and I can’t wait for the final book to come out!
AHHHHHHH!! And this is why I waited for the last book to come out. A mega cliffhanger and so much pain. But like not for everyone?? Idk I’m so conflicted and I really don’t know how we’re going to tie everything up
Dnf. Which I will whole heartedly admit was a hard choice. I even went and reread the series to get back into the feel of the books and I just couldn't. This was incredibly boring, the story was FAR to long and I couldn't make myself finish this and then head into another book after it.
PLOT TWIST DAMN!!! i feel 50/50 about her getting her bonds back because all the unbonded are really thriving and it seems unfair to take that from them?? also bullet BETTER live till the end. this series has been really fun to read!!
