Atef Alshaer & Alan Morrison (Eds.) (2024) OUT OF GAZA: NEW PALESTINIAN POETRY
London. Smokestack Books

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 out of 5 stars

The sleeve reads, "At the beginning of the Fifth Gaza War, the Palestinian poet Refaat Alareer defiantly promised that if the Israeli Defence Force attacked his house he would ‘throw my pen in the faces of the soldiers’. A few weeks later, Alareer was killed by an Israeli airstrike on the building.
Since the outbreak of the ‘Israel-Hamas war’ in October 2023, over 20k Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, almost all of them civilians. Four thousand children were killed in the first few weeks of the war. A third of all the houses have been destroyed, together with the water and electricity infrastructure, 300 schools, 26 hospitals and 88 mosques, turning Gaza into what UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has called a ‘graveyard’.
Out of Gaza brings together responses to the current crisis by Palestinian poets, including Naomi Shihab Nye, Farid Bitar, Deema Shehabi, Hala Alyan, Ali Abukhattab, Marwan Makhoul, Lena Khalaf Tuffaha, Mohammed Mousa, Dareen Tatour and Sara Saleh. These are poems of rubble and resilience, death and resistance; they speak about displacement, occupation, exile and bombardment. Angry with the world’s silence in the face of such tragedy, these poems bear witness to catastrophe and to the powerful determination to survive it."

I empathize enormously with the enormity of what is happening to Palestinians in Gaza. And some of the poems in this book are very good. But there are problems with proofreading and with not identifying which poems have been translated and which were written in English--nor are any of the translators identified. I also did not care for a number of the poems, as poetry. But of course it is an admirable effort.

’we may not change the world with what we write
but we may shame it.’

I’m not a poetry reader, and as such find there was probably a lot of nuance in this collection that I missed and didn’t quite understand.
Having said that, this was a brilliant collection of Palestinian poetry that captures the strength and resilience of the Palestinian people and I would definitely recommend reading it, especially in a day and age where their voices are being silenced.

This is a diverse collection of the best English poetry from Gazan writers, many of whom are still or were living in Gaza before being killed off by the Zionists. The ongoing genocide makes it required reading as a form of resistance to erasure. It will be a complete remembrance of silenced voices soon enough if we all don't do more to stop this.

Unbelievably beautiful poems written in unbelievably harsh conditions. Not sure what else to say other than that everyone should be reading a copy of this right now, and doing whatever they can to fight the Israeli occupation of Palestine and genocide of Palestinians.

Heart breaking collection, but a vitally informative and necessary read. Grateful that there is a collection dedicated to the current crisis in Gaza.

An absolutely essential read, and I’m sure this collection will be used in the distant future as a history source.

There are many just singular lines that will absolutely break you. No matter what your political stance, or opinion on the matter - you will be completely moved by the suffering depicted in this book.

It’s one thing to see images and videos, it’s another to read poetry of those real people within said media. It’s happening right now.
