A fully revised and expanded edition of a best-selling classic, this book offers complete information about parenting a child with a nonverbal learning disorder or Asperger's disorder. This edition includes a new section on anxiety and social anxiety, now commonly held to be major issues for children with these conditions, and new specific skills training for social behaviors limited by a child's ability to perform.
I have a client with a form a form of Nonverbal Autism. In order to increase the Quality of Care that I provide, I am constantly on the lookout for related literature. Stewart's book caught my attention immediately, as it actually contained the word "nonverbal" in the title. That being said, as Stewart uses it, "nonverbal" is a bit of a misnomer. Her book does not contain a single case study involving an individual who is nonverbal. Though Stewart's book contains a wealth of (if somewhat dated) information, it is very repetative, and it was not helpful in the way that I'd hoped it would be.
This I did not fully read. I bought it to point out to "Dr." Stern at our Middle School WHY I knew my son was not ADHD as she kept suggesting... but why the DEVELOPMENTAL PEDIATRICIAN along with his own Private Dr. where on the right path! This did help my husband and I start in the right direction to get what he needs!
I found this book to be full of useful information. There were examples of behaviors, explanations as to why, and strategies to assist in classrooms and home. The writing was simple, direct, easy to follow and right on target. I will definitely keep this book as a reference for parents and teachers - highly recommended.
