Enjoyable quick read about a girl who loses her virginity to the father of her best friend after that friend goes away for college. Melody has been secretly admiring Preston for a long time. Now that his wife has left for another man and his daughter has gone away, Melody gets that chance.

The innocence Melody portrays is cute at the beginning, but it disappears faster than her hyman during the encounter when she loses her virginity. Going from scared girl to screaming a certain two word phrase over and over within a matter of seconds seemed a little too far fetched. The other part that seemed wrong was the wife Chelsea coming back and Melody hears her having sex presumably with Preston. But just one sentence from Preston denying and then Melody saying oh okay? Again, seems too quick.

Despite these, I enjoyed reading this short story. It is good for a quick steamy ready. Three and a half stars.

I can't classify this work as a book, novella or short story. It's more like a writing experiment.

Let me preface this review by saying that I purchased this as a complete lark. I think I ran across the title on first-reads and thought "Oh, it's only .99, I'll give it a go". I was intrigued by the age difference in the characters - that always interests me as my husband and I are 17 years apart in age, which is somewhat rare.

Under different circumstances, say, I 'd been given the book rather than spending my money on it, I wouldn't rate or review this at all. I would literally have kept my thoughts to myself. After much thought though, I did spend money, which means the authoress has presented her work to the public (with a charge) to criticize or applaud accordingly.

To say that an editor is needed is just, well, asinine. What really is needed is beta readers, which there was a clear lack of. If that had been the case, several things would have been pointed out:

1.) Characters needed more development. Even in short stories and novellas, character development matters so that the reader understands what motivates them to do xyz.

2.) Story development. Many other reviewers noted the abrupt ending. It was really as if there was a case of writers fatigue and instead of just taking a lunch break, the author typed a couple closing paragraphs and said "Okay, done! Phew".

3.) Writing style is too simplistic. Purple prose is not needed, but an elevated prose is needed to sell work.

Then there are personal preferences. I, for one, found Melody's relationship to Preston to be on the ick side. There was no proof of a relationship beyond a parent-child dynamic. To pretty much each his own on that one though.

Overall, I wish I saved my dollar. I wish Emma Clark the best of luck in her endeavor, however, as it takes a good amount of courage to do what she's done. I applaud her for that.

Synopsis

This story is about a young woman (Melody) who has a crush on her best friend's dad (Preston). He is recently separated from his wife & his only child has gone off to college, leaving him the house all to himself. Melody has just recently finished high school & has no aspirations in life other than to be with Preston. She starts working as his housekeeper & one thing leads to another from there.

General Thoughts

The story came across as an older man manipulating an inexperienced & naive girl. It seemed to me that he knew of her crush & used those feelings against her to his advantage. It also had a taboo feel to it even though they were both consenting adults.

This was another book by this author that walked the edge. It had a non-con feel to it, but everything was actually consensual (even if manipulation was used).

I liked this story for only two reasons, the taboo feel to it & the sex scenes. The storyline itself had holes & the characters weren't likable, but I've come to expect those from this author.

Recommended

To people who enjoy stories of an older man taking advantage of a much younger woman.

I won a free copy of this book through the Erotic Enchants group on Goodreads. A review was not required or requested.

First I want to say, I don't give high ratings for novelettes. I'm not a big fan of them and I had no idea this was a novelette when I started it. I pick out books because they interest me. Second...this was really rushed and with a book coming out, well that to me is no way to garner support. I can't say much about this very short and to the point novelette. It has sex. Some good scenes, and some that make you squirm. I wouldn't say the girl loved her best friends father but was infatuated. It's barely 45 pages and I felt like I had whiplash when I was done. The earlier scenes made you think he had an unhealthy leer toward Melody, and then he deflowers her after his daughter goes to college and his wife leaves him for a younger man. So I guess it was up to you to decide how much of a lust he had for her. Very nice cover though, even though it doesn't really fit the story. To me that is not a 34 year old man and a eighteen year old.

Teaching Melody develops the character relationship between the two main characters. She grows from a young girl with a crush on the father of her friend, mostly because he is nice to her. When she is out of high school she goes to work for the now single, Preston as his housekeeper. Now that she is an adult the attraction grows between a good-looking old man, Preston and they young girl. Descriptions of the sex scenes are detailed but tasteful. Every story needs a problem; Preston's ex-wife enters and exits for a happy ever after ending.

Positives are that the older man did not lust after Melody until she turned eighteen. He was single when the relationship started, as his wife had left him some time before. They ended up married, building a new family where Preston's daughter was welcome. Hot sex and good morals make a great short story in Teaching Melody.

Melody and Preston, definite chemistry, so wanted to love the story more than I did. However, I feel like it was just too rushed. Yes I knew going into this it was a short story BUT I've read plenty of shorts to know they can be done well. Had she stopped at them simply having sex and her getting her dream of him having sex with her I probably would have been okay with that. But she decided to throw in back story, more than was necessary, then tried to give us what could have been a full blown novella length story inside of a super short story. It was a short story therefore, the ex-wife and how her friend reacted to them together and the fact they got pregnant and she gave him a son were not necessary for a short story!

Overall it was good, but it could have been better done.

****I won this is book in a holiday party, and wrote the review because I chose to.

Quick and steamy little read about a college age girl with a crush on her friend's dad. Written very smoothly for the most part, but the ending seemed abrupt and there was one phrase that seemed jarring to me.."Clutching his...shoulders, I allowed him to perform a dry f*ck"....
to me that could have been phrased differently.
But I'm nitpicking. This was quite the erotic read and would love to see more by this author. Thanks to Library Thing and Emma Clark for letting me read this novella.

I really wish this would have been longer. It was a good read and was really steamy in all the right places, but it was way too short. I won my copy in a giveaway so I really can't complain but if I had actually paid for it I would have been even more disappointed in it. The characters were a little one dimensional and the heroine was more than a little stalkerish but other than that its a good story.

For a short novella (35 pages), it was well written. A little quick at the beginning because the exposition was too quick. Though, at the same time it arrived at the erotic part all that much faster.

The characters of Melody and Preston were fleshed out (no pun intended) as well as an erotic short story should be. We honestly do not care about them as much as the lust.

Again, a great, fast read that is fascinating and fun.

This ones a keeper. I loved all the smutty, juicy hot times they had together! Melody waited years before she could get in Preston's pants. I'd be tearing my hair out.
Preston, or should I say Adonis? Loved to satisfy Melody in all kinds of spicy ways. I want a lover like him!

I hated that it ended too soon, ;.; but it's still worth 5 stars.

I really enjoyed this book! At first I thought it was going to be really dirty ;) but it wasn't much, more mild? Even though it was short it did make a good story and I'm glad that she was able to give him a son like he wanted and he got rid of his wife that came back from being dumped by her boyfriend.

Honestly the sex scenes in this book are so hot! The author does a great job of bringing back the memories of virginal sex play. I am not really comfortable with the situation of Melody growing up with her friend's father in her life and then him being the one who takes her virginity. It borders on creepy.

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.

I liked that the author gives background to the characters. Little creepy in the middle but it was a steamy read. Some parts seemed to be a little far fetched but isn't any story that way.

Look forward to reading other books from this author.

Just plain awful. Poorly written, full of clichés and presenting
dumber than shit characters, teaching melody was one of the worst
books I've ever read.

I've come to a point where I don't expect much from erotica,
especially short stories. I don't expect it to be that bad, though.

Have you ever encountered, in a book, a character you'd like to kill
very slowly and very painfully ?
Well, this isn't what happened to me in this book. No, this level of
horribleness makes me want to kill myself. Not only because the
characters are too stupid to live, but also because it seriously makes
me lose any lingering hope I had for modern literature.

I'll start with melody's bff. The girl is a serious lunatic. What
would you do if your best friend fell off her bike and hurt her ankle?
Stay around, help her, right ? Well, not this one :

Ashley seemed annoyed, bored with me lounging about.
She headed out and resumed riding her bike.

Other times she's presented as a normal girl with a normal bff
behavior. Go figure.

Then you have Chelsea, ashley's mom, who is, simply put, bat-shit crazy.

But let's not forget Preston, the one I hated the most.
His wife left him, his daughter is away at college, and he's alone in
the house with melody, his daughter's best friend. He invites her to
watch a movie with him, and here's what happens :

He pulled the blanket over us. Preston spooned me tightly from behind.

I'd like to point out that their relations have always been platonic.
Would you let you best friend's father spoon you ? Even if you were in
love with him, that's not normal behavior on either part.
And it goes on :

"Is it okay if I rest my arm around you ?"

And on :

"Is it okay if I touch you,?" he softly asked. "I don't want you to
think of me as some sort of creep."

AAAAAARGH !! THIS IS NOT NORMAL BEHAVIOR !!

But the worst of it all is what he says when she tells him she doesn't
want to sleep with him because she's a virgin :

"haven't I turned you on ?"

Oh yeah, why don't you guilt her into sleeping with you ? Kill me now, please.

And let's not forget that he regards sex as a business relationship :

"now she you've satisfied me, I need to satisfy you."

Umh, "need to" ? Jesus fucking Christ.

Finally, you've got melody, the dumbest,of them all :

"would you like to see me come?" he asked.
"come?" come where ?

I'd like to point out that she's eighteen. She's not living in an
isolated farm or under a rock, so I see absolutely no fucking reason
why she shouldn't know what coming means. At this point, it's called
being retarded.

She also has a great plan to keep Preston away from Chelsea.

Now that the bitch was back I had to sleep in a guest bedroom. As I
reclined on the twin bed I devised a plan. A twisted plan that would
keep me in Prestons' heart and erase Chelsea forever.
No I wasn't going to murder her. But I was going to give Preston that
son he wanted.
He just didn't know it yet.

Great plan, great plan. Being pregnant at eighteen is genius, isn't it ?

I'll finish this with what probably bothered me the most :

Chelsea's hands braced my shoulders, bit Preston grabbed the collar of
her shirt and yanked her back. Choked by her shirt collar, her face
reddened.

And what does dear melody think when she sees him hurting someone, and
a woman at that ?

Nothing could tear us apart. Nothing ever would.

Don't waste your time or money.

There's something so realistic about the lead male characters that Emma Clark creates...and she's created quite the variety of men in her books. Some are very dark with lovable qualities and some are light with just enough brute in them to make me deliciously jumpy when the plot heightens...I liked Preston, though he is a bit immature, crass and careless with Melody...he's basically a good guy who's worth loving- warts and all!

A man separated from his wife teaches his daughter's best friend about sex. The descriptions are vivid and putting aside the graphic sex scenes the book had no real plot. Had I not committed to review it, in all honesty I would not have finished it.

Ended to fast

I love the book but i feel like it was a bit rush. it made him look more like a perv instead of a lover. In made the ending look impulsive. He said love u way to quick. And it looked like he lied to her about y his wife left “didnt like fucking him” it looked like melody was manipulated but the happy ending was nice just the book was tooo rushed
