Book one of the YA/New Adult Choisie series by the author of Emi Lost & Found!
When she was four, a generous couple welcomed orphan Olivia Sophia into their lives. As she grew up, her parents made good decisions for her, raising “Livvy” to be an intelligent and creative young girl. Now sixteen, three people influence many of her choices: her first love, her second father, and a third man who speaks to her through his artwork.
Livvy’s father is practical and steadfast; even-tempered and quietly observant. She’s an artist who acts on her emotions and thrives on attention. Unhappy with their differences– and misunderstanding her father’s methods– Livvy chooses to focus on the similarities she shares with an enigmatic painter from her mother’s past. Her overactive imagination leads her down an obsessive path– one that only stands to hurt everyone around her.
The distraction of a new boyfriend has the potential to end her search and reunite her family, but his involvement in her life could be just as devastating, taking Livvy away from her father for good.
Ok I must say that this book was difficult to read since I am a parent of a teenager! I kept putting my daughter in Livvy's place and thinking how I would feel. However the story was very well written. I loved that although Livvy is a bright girl and has everything afforded to her she still had those same issues as all teens. I was aggravated at times with Livvy's disrespect and continual comparison between Jacks and Nate. I continued to love Jacks and admire his true love for his daughter while she grows into a woman. Great read and I can't wait to continue to read Livvy's story.
NOTE: I recommend reading this book only AFTER you've read the Lost and Found series. It could serve as a standalone, but it's a spinoff series and I think many would be confused about some events and things being spoken about.
Boy, where do I even begin with this one? I put it off because from the description it sounds like a Nate Wilson-heavy book and after finishing the Emi Lost and Found series, I was still too raw to delve back in. So what did I do? I decided that after a mere two months, I'd re-read that emotional ass-kicking series. Sick, I know. But I did it to set myself up for Contessa. I figured if I was going to get my heart broken and served up to me as sushi, I may as well go all the way. I didn't expect to love this book as much as it's "parent" series - I mean, seriously, I LOVE those books. No way could I fall in love with this book even if it DOES include cameos from some of the minor people and big roles for our favorite main characters. Wrong. Again.
I believe I mentioned that I felt this would be a Nate-heavy book and yeah, it is. Chapter one nearly knocked me for a loop. In good and bad ways. I was beyond thrilled that something I had wanted since Never Look Back ended was finally reality. And then Donna comes into the picture and BAM! I cried. The smallest mention of Nate can still do that to me. Every. Single. Time. I nearly stopped reading and set Contessa aside for another day when I thought I was ready. But who knows when that will be? These books are so emotionally charged that I don't believe you will ever stop feeling so strongly about the players. But, as usual, I digress.
Now we get to meet a teenage Livvy. At first, I adored her. A talented young artist who was in awe of Nate? YES! Until... it proved to be an unhealthy obsession. As the book progresses, so does Livvy's infatuation with Nate. Unfortunately this takes its toll on her relationship with her dad, Jack Holland. Not on his account, mind you, but this blame gets put all on HER. At first, I could understand how the addition of family would make her feel, but she was never treated differently or as anything but their beloved daughter. Honestly, she comes off as a spoiled, unappreciative brat throughout most of this book. When she started her relationship with Jon I was initially happy. He seemed good for her. Then he too started to annoy me. He seemed to be simultaneously do things to bring her closer to her father while doing stupid things that would cause setbacks and bring further issues to light. My frustration levels were through the roof when he kept complaining about wanting to be seen as an adult when certain things he did and said were very childlike. Their relationship is very immature (as it should be), but also realistic. They are truly typical teenagers and I guarantee some of their actions will make you question your own behavior at the same age. That doesn't excuse things and you will still want to give both Jon and Livvy this:
Jack. Jack Freaking Holland. Ugh. The absolute PERFECT man. If you thought he was amazing before, prepare yourself. HE. GETS. BETTER. Impossible? NO. This book for some reason made me realize just how wonderful he really is. But wow, did my heart break for him. Constantly. He is easily the most selfless character I've ever read about it and the things he has to deal with in Contessa will make you cry. Sad doesn't even describe it - wretched, disconsolate... there are a gazillion adjectives but they all add up to the fact that he doesn't deserve anything that is dealt out. For a man who's been nothing but loving, kind, patient, and generous, it is disturbing to witness his hurt at the hands of someone he cherishes more than his own life. You'll want to do this:
As is the case with all of Lori Otto's books, my emotions were all over the place. This one focused a lot on anger, however, and those feelings were directed toward a teenage girl. It's not my fault! Her dad is nothing short of amazing and I couldn't bear his pain. Contessa feels like it addresses a lot of the "What if" questions I had at the end of the Lost and Found series. Undoubtedly Nate and Emi's life together would have been different. We also don't know if that would have been the best scenario for either of them. And it gives you pause to think of what we'd be left with. Where would Jack have ended up? There are so many variables that make you question the events, but I think through Livvy's obsession with Nate, we get the answers. And as tragic and unfair as things were, maybe Lori did things the ONLY way (did I actually just type that?!?!?!?!). We'll obviously never know, but it gives you something to think about. I think Contessa does a perfect job of proving that things are as they should be. And by 82%, you'll love Livvy again. Jon, too.
I can fully admit that even though Lori once completely obliterated my heart, she has healed it. Fully. Completely. I have accepted the events and appreciate the story in every aspect. This was what I needed to get past Nate and move on. Lori is one of few authors who has the ability to create characters that feel like real people. To me, they aren't fictional. They are people out there in the world, living their lives and they've chosen Lori as the voice of their stories for the world to enjoy.
Contessa is a beautiful look at a family we've all grown to love. And even though Livvy drove me crazy the majority of the time, it's still a phenomenal book. I couldn't stop reading until I finished.
Bravo! I look forward to the rest of the Holland family's stories.
It took me a while to be able to read this series because I was not ready yet to read about Emi and Jack's daughter, Olivia. I wanted to keep her in my head and my heart as the child she was at the end of the Emi Lost & Found series, one of my favorite series ever. I was finally ready and to be honest I started to read it more because I wanted to go back to see how Emi and Jack were doing, get back into their world. And that I did and in the process and I found myself totally immersed in this young woman. I was transported through this story to that time period in my own life when all those feelings were so real and important. Something that as an adult you tend to forget and take for granted. Seeing Emi and Jack as parents was a wonderful treat. What a wonderful mom Emi turned out to be. And Jack captured my heart all over again as the devoted and caring father that wanted nothing but the very best for his princess. I loved Jon's character. A perfect example of what a real man should be. Certainly my type of hero. A true example that you can aim for the stars and reach them. You do not have to have everything served on a platinum platter. I am looking forward to seeing Jon and Livvy develop and grow as individuals and as a couple and how they face the challenges that I'm sure life will throw at them.
Let me start out by saying that all my five-star up there are for Jon. Because really, what are our younger years about, if not about love? And a love story without a swoon worthy boy is no good. In this case, the boys name is Jon.
Well, Jon is all things swoon-worthy with sprinkles of awesomeness.
Anyway, back to our protagonist. Olivia, Livvy and Contessa.
I really enjoyed this book. All the frustration I felt at the beginning towards Olivia at the end of this story was forgotten. I felt that she redeemed her self as much as a teenager can. As far as Jack, oh man, Jack. If there was any question as to what team I was on before, there isn't now. I know it's not too fair to Nate because his life was cut short, but I'm Jacks girl now. What an amazing Father and husband. I love how involved he was in Tessa's life and all limitations and boundaries he set on her. Seemed very realistic.
I really enjoyed this book. Lori L. Otto does an amazing job at taking us through a young girl's first love as well as her first real teenage rebellions. This book brought back a lot of memories for me.
The family dynamic described in the book is also great. Parents can also make mistakes and Lori does not shy away from showing this. Raising a teenager seems to be to one of the most daunting things a parent can face and Lori shows this wonderfully too. The family fights are so heartbreaking, but the making up is so heartwarming. No family is perfect. Even the most picture perfect family has it's problems.
Teenagers always want to grow up too fast, and perhaps the thing I loved most about this book (and related to so much) was the pushing, pushing, pushing of Livvy, and to a certain extent Jon, and the struggle of Emi and Jack to give enough freedom but not too much. Both teens realised that they were asking for, perhaps, more than they could realistically handle. And I loved this growth of character.
The romance is sweet and envy enducing and the family life is wonderful and realistic. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone from the age of 16 and beyond.
I just love Lori Otto's books. They are stories that you become totally emotionally invested in. This is a spin off of the Emi Lost and Found series. Emi, Jack and Nate are featured quite prominently in this novel as well. Liv is a typical 16 year old, one whom I found somewhat unlikable and very frustrating, in the beginning. Thankfully she grew emotionally by the end. Jon is just divine. A lovely young man who has had to grow up and take on family responsibilities well before he should have. This was a lovely woven love story and I can't wait for the next one to be released!
One thing I really like about all of Lori's books is the way she writes the love scenes. Sex plays a large part in the lives of all of her characters but the way she writes these scenes is almost poetic. I am no prude, but it's so nice to read stories that emphasis the beauty of making love rather than the mechanics.
Another great read from Lori Otto. I just love everything she touches. I'm always very on the fence about reading YA but this one just proves that fact that when its done right it can draw a reader of any age. This story was so touching and relatable. If Jacks didn't win you over in The Lost and Found series he sure will in Contessa. His relationship with Livvy at times both broke my heart and warmed my soul. Lori Otto makes the reader feel like a part of the Holland Family after reading each book and that is truly a gift. I can't wait for the next book... Well books really, I plan to read them all!
Sorry for the long review. I just loved this book and have a lot to say about it and I might get carried away.
I apologize to Lori because it took me so long to read this. But yes, Lori! I read it, finished it and loved it.
Contessa is the story of Olivia Sophia Holland. She's Emi' and Jack's daughter. She's a teenager who's starting to see the world through her own eyes and wants to explore more, have more of it, and not by herself of course... There's Jon. Jon Augustus Scott. But there are rules. Contessa is a story of self discovery, growing up and love. But this is also a story that will show you the hard part of being a teenager and how rough relationships between parents and daughters (in this case) can be.
My thoughts: First, let me tell you something.. It is no surprise that I loved this story. I mean, it's Lori L. Otto we are talking about. I can't not love her books. That being said, let me tell you what I thought about the story.
I thought Contessa was a complicated book to read. Why? Simply because I'm not a teenager anymore and the attitude Olivia had towards some things was just so infuriating. But I guess that's just how kids are these days. I don't remember being that defiant. Just know that this book shows you exactly how kids act, well at least some. It is real. The thoughts, the attitude, the way Olivia saw everything... I thought it was pretty accurate to how a teenager would think and act. Lori's an expert writing real characters and real stories. It's amazing, how they always are just so right.
I loved Contessa. This is a wonderful story that goes after the Emi Lost & Found series. Like I said before, this is about self discovery. Olivia is just starting to see the world through her own eyes, experiencing new things with not so new people, this includes Jack, Emi, Donna and Jon. She's exploring new things as an artist too and that's helping her understand her life a little better, to grow up as a person, it just took her a while to see the real meaning of her art.
This book has so much love in it. It has a husband's love towards his wife; a wife's love towards her husband; their love towards their children. A boyfriend and a girlfriend's love towards each other. But mostly, a dad's love towards his daughter. And not only a dad's love... It's Jack's love towards Livvy. And that's beautiful, because every time Jack talked to Livvy, I could see and hear in my mind how much he loved her. It was like I was there, I saw Jack's expressions, heard his love for his daughter in every word he said... and I know this might sound insane, but I swear I felt it that way. It was impossible to read this and not feel how in love Jack was with his daughter (and I mean this in a fatherly way, not a creepy one!!!!), but you could see this from the moment he met her.
While I was reading Contessa I was constantly frustrated, because Olivia's actions were too childish sometimes... But I also understood why she acted the way she did, after all, she was just a child. Until she realized that she had to take her responsibilities seriously... There's was never going to be any chance for her to be taken as an adult.
The book is focus on one relationship in particular. You would think it was Jon's and Olivia's relationship, but to me, it was between Jack and Olivia. There was obviously a huge wall between them, one that Olivia had put there, one that Jack was constantly trying to take down. Their relationship was breaking and breaking with every passing day, because Olivia didn't want to see the beauty in it. So, it was heartbreaking for me to see how hurtful she was sometimes. Let me talk a little about the characters.
Olivia. When I fist met her, she was the sweetest thing. Now, she's all grown up and wants to be on her own. Do what she wants, be with whoever she wants. Yes, she's kind of a brat, but she has the biggest heart. She's compassionate, she adores her family, even when she wasn't acting very maturely, I knew she loved them. I loved her relationship with Emi, it was beautiful to see how trusting they both were with each other. Emi was her mom, but she was also her friend. But Emi is like that.
Olivia's art is something especial too. That bond she thought she had with Nate, at first I thought it was so amazing, that she could feel the way she did about someone she hadn't met. That she admired him so much. But then, it totally changed. I hated how she made Nate a bad influence, something that would eventually hurt her family so badly. That would hurt Jack and Emi so much.
I love Nate, Lori knows this. He's my number one book boyfriend. And I felt so protective about him reading this book, because Livvy was damaging his image before everyone else's eyes (not mine of course). It wasn't fair. And just so we are clear... I know Nate wasn't perfect. I know this. But to me, he's one character that will stick forever with me. I don't agree with whoever thinks he couldn't have been a great father. He would have. He would've done ANYTHING for Emi and his family, if he'd had the chance. He would've made Emi happy. He would've have grown up, done things differently. I know it. Yes, she's one of the 3 characters with whom I've thought was possible to have two loves. BUT I do think Jack was, is and will always be the perfect father for Olivia.
Jack has such an important role in this book and Olivia's life. He's always been so supportive of her and I hated she couldn't see that. She couldn't see past the fact that he was "too protective". I guess, he kind of was, but I guess he has a lot of reasons to be. I loved Jack a lot more in this book. I saw some of his flaws, something that I didn't see in TSS or NLB. This book made him a lot more real to me. And I loved how he loved Olivia, even after everything she had said... But I guess that swap hat fathers do.
Jon. Jon. Jon. Jon. Well, he is something. He's mature, he's passionate about the people and things he loves. He's ambitious, respectful, honorable. But he's also kind of bad. Not bad for Livvy, but like... He's defiant. He wanted to show her everything, and at first, I did think they were going too fast. Something that he'll realize later. I loved him. How sweet he was with Livvy. How he'd stand up to Jack and anyone for that matter, to defend Livvy. He loves her, that much is clear. And he knows what he wants and what he needs. When he thought they needed space, he said it. He was honest and I loved that about him.
Oh and Donna? That lady is just too much. She's an amazing granna. I loved that she loved Olivia just as if she were her granddaughter for real. She's too loving, she cares a lot about people, especially those around her. I loved her from the very start.
This book is just another reason of why I love Lori.
A gentler read from Lori but no less rewarding. I wasn't too sure about this book - the main characters are young (just 16 & 18) but I trust the authors writing now and as usual Lori offers so much more than the usual teenage angst that us mums roll our eyes at. As much as Livvy was a complete spoilt brat at times, I truly felt for her, she knew how she was behaving but she's the only one in a huge close knit family that isn't blood related (even Stephens step-daughter has her own mum) she's arty and creative and desperate to relate to someone on that level that aren't her parents, she falls in love with a dream and it backfires on her spectacularly (huge life lesson no 1) I think her parents coddle her more than most (Jack hides his hypocrisy beautifully, I would've loved Matt to have spiled a few more nuggets from Jacks teenage past) and she's fighting for her independence, that's where Jon comes in, what an absolute sweetheart, mature beyond his years because of circumstances out of his control and he's exactly the guidance Livvy needs, his showdown with Jack broke my heart (Lori makes me cry a lot) and the way he handles Livvy is brilliant. I'm glad I read this book, it's the foundation for Livvys story, Lori doesn't disappoint with her wonderful array of rich, warm, witty background characters and sub plots, no doubt Livvys ride will be as bumpy as her parents was and that's why so far Lori's books are nothing short of 5 stars for me - I'm psyching myself up to expect the unexpected.
I loved this story! First of all, although it’s not required, I recommend reading the Emi Lost & Found series before beginning Contessa, only because there are certain events that occur in those books that will make Contessa and the Choisie series more understandable. In Contessa, we have the story of Olivia, who is the adopted daughter of a wealthy New York family.
I really love this book. The author does an incredible job of writing about the angst that teenagers experience. Don’t shy away from the Young Adult/New Adult label, this is a richly written and emotionally full story with characters that feel incredibly real. The dialogue between the parents and the Olivia, and between Olivia and Jon, feel very authentic.
Without a doubt, Olivia is a little prickly and tough to love as a character. But she is very talented and seems to find love with Jon, despite the tough times and the rocky road she has with her parents. Contessa is also a beautiful story about first love.
I also must comment on the absolutely spectacular covers of the Choisie series! Bravo, Ms. Otto! I hate to say it but I do often judge a book by its cover and each of these are more beautiful than the next. Give Lori Otto a try. She is a very gifted and talented writer and her stories are beautiful.
I'm just wondering how many superlatives I can use to describe this whole series. Beautiful, amazing, gorgeous, I love it. I feel part of the family and now I'm at the end I feel a bit....sad. So, why 4 stars and not 5, well there are two reasons. The first is because I will never get over how affected I was by book two, "Time Stands Still". It was so powerful, it will always stay with me. The second reason is that this last book is targeted towards young adults and that's very much how its written. Having said that, I think it's important to read this story and continue with this family. Apart from everything I've said above, you could easily pick this book up as a stand alone, especially if you are aged 16+. I believe there will be another book and I'm looking forward to continuing on with Livvy's story into adulthood.
Thank you my lovely friend, Michelle Ochoa, for gifting this fantastic set of books to me.
I really enjoyed this book. After falling in love with the Emi Lost & Found series, I was thrilled to learn that Lori Otto continued the story. I think the author is a master a getting the reader to really love a flawed hero or heroine. In this book, Livvy is kind of self involved and bratty - a typical teenager I guess! She (thankfully) grows up quite a bit throughout the book. What kind of made me sad was her perspective of her father, Jack. I absolutely loved him in the Emi Lost & Found series - he was pretty much perfect! To see him through his teenager daughter's eyes, he seemed stern and no nonsense. I am glad Livvy comes to recognize that he is amazing after all. I loved that Jon was a truly great guy but yet still a typical teenage boy that sometimes makes bad decisions. I can't wait for book 2 of the Choisie series. I love this author!
Nobody can make me cry and feel like Lori Otto! This woman evokes so much raw emotion into her stories that it just leaves me with an emotional hangover every time! I have put this book off for so long bc I wasn't ready to go back to the story after Emi. Nate destroyed me and I wasn't sure I could handle this. Though, it is Olivia's story and quite different the emotions from before could be felt. I felt like I was reliving parts of my youth and how much a teenage girls feelings and actions affect those around her. Jack just sealed the fact that he was destined to be with Emi and their love is readily apparent and beautiful! All those who were Team Nate, like I was in the beginning will be changing their tune! My heart just broke my for Jack and I love him more than I ever did before! Perfection at its finest! Thank you for another wonderful story Lori!
When I first began reading "Contessa," I wasn't sure if I could keep reading it. Livvy seemed like a spoiled brat and as the mother of a teenager, the last thing I wanted was for my escape (reading) to be like my reality.
But as I kept reading, my worries were put to rest and I loved this story as much as I loved Lori's "Lost and Found" series.
An amazing book and, as always, Lori tells an amazing story!
I almost couldn't finish reading this book because Olivia was pissing me off. I was starting to compare her to the daughter in "Mildred Pierce". Then I realized Lori Otto did a great job bringing a character to life. I'm just glad that Olivia came to her senses, but I have to admit I did miss seeing things from Jack and Emi's perspective.
A wonderful continuation to the Emi series. The same rich detail in characters. Lori Otto takes you on a journey with Livvy in her relationship with Jack. You experience along with her the love and angst she feels in her teenage years. It's wonderful to see Emi and Jack as parents. A remarkable story! Am anxious to continue on with the next installment.
I love it I can't complain a very good book I liked that it followed after the 3rd book and I immediately feel in love with the characters just like on the other books Lori truly knows how to put those feeling in words like no other keep it up Lori your doing a great job and love your books can't wait for book 2 hurry hurry lol!!!
This was an amazing book and realize that my daughter will be going through this stage very soon!!! Lori you have out done yourself and can't wait for more books to be written!!!
Lori Otto is the author of the Emily Lost and Found Series and I honestly loved the entire emotional roller coaster ride and all that series put me through. When I saw the author was going to be doing a spin off for Olivia, I was all in. Scared of course, because let’s face it this is Lori Otto, you just know you need to grab some tissues, wine and get something to hit. Contessa is Olivia Sophia Holland’s story. She was adopted by Emi and Jack after losing their baby. The story starts off when Olivia is very young and we see her grow into a teenager who has questions about her life. Wanting to fit in more and is obsessed with all things Nate. She has an interest in a certain young man by the name of Jon but Jack has rules and is a strict parent. Contessa was another emotional read as we watch Contessa go through self-discovery, growing up, love and accepting that in life something’s are not as they seem. It was hard for me to read how Olivia was struggling as a teenager, she had difficulty understand where she came from and she didn’t understand that Jacks love was selfless. Her actions made life hard for Jack and Emi and their family, she pushed hard at times and the family dynamics became strained and tense.
I loved how the author showed the love in this read. I was able to see the love Jack had towards his wife and his 2 children equally, and there was nothing he wouldn’t do for those he loved. Jon and Contessa’s relationship although difficult at times was a true, pure and honest love. They both were committed to one another and were willing to go the extra mile. I absolutely loved the way the author showed readers the unconditional love Jack had with Contessa. There was NOTHING that distinguished she was adopted (although she knew). Jack’s love for Contessa was that of a father and daughter. Although Olvivia/Contessa/Livvy was going through deep issues and the relationship with his daughter was strained, he never gave up on her. You really felt the love he had for her.
Contessa was a difficult character, I found her to be immature, careless and judgmental at times but reading further into the story I understood her personality and why she acted that way. She was trying to figure out who she was, where she came from, and her obsession with Nate gave her something to focus on. As time went on Contessa’s character grew and became mature, she realized that her actions were of her chosen. She has to take responsibility for them and for the hurt she caused. I loved the way the author show readers the growth of this character and the different stages she went through.
Where Contessa had two men in her life, the book focused more on her relationship with her father Jack. She thought Jack did not get her or accept that she was growing up and she constantly compared Nate and Jack. I really felt so bad for the pain and hurt Jack and Olivia were growing through. Lori Otto, wrote the inner dialogue between the two with such passion and depth that I could not help by cry and feel anger at their situation. Olivia could not understand that Jack’s loved her and saw her as HIS daughter and he only wanted the best for her. We see Emi in this book but the author focused more on Jack and Olivia’s relationship. I loved that the prologue was done in his POV and that we saw how much he changed so that he could be there with his family.
Olivia is an extremely smart and talented young lady. She is gifted in art and painting. Her love of art is where her obsession with Nate begins. She has been told that her work is similar to his. With those words, she felt connected to someone but her thoughts of Nate caused a gap in her family. Your heart breaks for Olivia because she honestly does not understand why people are angry with her about Nate. I think she just wanted to feel like she truly belonged to someone.
Olivia and Jon have known each other since they were young. They both attended the same art program. Jon is older than Olivia, more mature and passionate about art and Olivia. I loved his character. He was determined, humble, noble and patient. Jon and Livy are good together but he is a teenager and every now and then he shows that side. He can be bold, pushy and self-centered. Since Livy was younger and inexperienced, he was willing to be patient and take things slow with her. He wanted to be the one to introduce everything to her first. I loved how, when Jack became overbearing, Jon was not afraid to stand up to him and speak his mind. He defended his love for Livy as well as their relationship. I really love the dynamics of their relationship. It was intense, fast, deep and pure. The author gradually brings their relationship to culmination over a period of time, I loved it
Let me once again say, that this was an amazing read. I loved her writing in the Emi Lost and Found series and I am glad I read this one. She does such an amazing job with this book. She brings out so many emotions out of me when I read her writing. I did not know that there were 2 other books out in this series so I immediately picked up the next and was up until 4:00 am reading Olivia and Dear Jon. AMAZING!!! Please grab this book and take a journey of growth, acceptance and love. You will not be disappointed.
Wow, Lori has done it again, pulled at every heartstring you can imagine. I love how her stories literally pull you in and make you feel exactly what her characters are feeling. After the big #UglyCry from her Emi Lost & Found series, I wasn't sure what to expect when reading the Choisie series. Although, I don't think you necessarily need to read the Emi series first, I recommend it.
Contessa is told from Olivias POV, she is the young girl that Emi & Jack adopted when she was three. Now, at 16, follow her story as she trys to become and adult in a world she doesn't understand.
Livvy is struggling with trying to be the girl her father wants her to become and the girl she thinks she is becoming. She's your typical teenager that thinks her father doesn't 'get' her.
She is an artist, and she has become obsessed with Nate, a man from her mother's past, who was a brilliant artist that was tragically taken from this world in a bad car accident.
"From all I'd been told of Nate over the years, he was some untouchable idol to me. Like a rock star. His paintings fascinated me from a very young age, and the stories Ganna would tell me about him only added to the ideal image I had of him"
I miss Nate, and every time he makes an appearance in Contessa, it pulls at my heart. You feel how sad Livvy is to have a connection to someone she has never met. She doesn't understand that connection, nor does she know how to handle it. It slowly becomes a huge problem for her and her parents as she believes that Nate would have been a better father to her than Jack.
Jack is a great Father and he trys to understand the connection Livvy feels she has with Nate, but I think he kind of resents the fact that Nate has become a constant in their lives. He tries to understand Livvys art, but she constantly shuts him out stating he'll never understand the way Nate would have.
Jack on Livvys painting- "I'd be worried about you, and I'd wonder what I could do to help you, but I would be so proud that my daughter was brave enough to bare her soul to the world in such a way. And to me, that's beautiful. That's what beauty is to me. Its seeing you become this significant person not just in my world, but in the world."
As if that wasn't enough to deal with, lets throw in a boy, Jon. He went to Nates Art Room with Livvy for years when they were young. He stopped going as a teen. Now, he's back and he wants Livvy. He must make her, and her father, That he cares for her and not the social standing of her family.
Livvy falls head over heals in love with Jon. And rightfully so, he is sweet and he adores her.
They have lots of sweet, tender moments. When Jon leans in and gives Livvy her very first kiss, I felt butterflies in my stomach right along with her.
Being 16, and sheltered from the world, she feels everything to the extreme. Her parents are wealthy and well known in society and with that comes great responsibility. And she can be a spoiled little brat at times. Lol. But, her obsession with Nate causes her a lot of grief. Not only with her parents but with Jon as well.
This is a great story of self discovery, love, loss, letting go of the past and moving on. I can't wait to finish this series.
No longer, daddy's little girl, both she and Jack struggle to find a middle ground. To make matters worse, Livvy has developed an unhealthy obsession with someone who has always lingered into their lives. This is a very real and angst driven novel of a young girl's journey of self discovery.
I just finished this book and the author continues to blow me away. It's amazing how easily she fills the shoes of a 16 year old girl when I can't even think back to how I was at that age so many years ago. Olivia Sophia Holland finds herself walking the the fine line between adolescence and womanhood- the most confusing and challenging time for all females.
Like Lori's other books, Contessa did not short change in the emotionally driven context. I found myself annoyed with Livvy PLENTY of times in this book; her ungrateful and over privileged attitude drove me insane. This is the perfect example of the author's gift in bringing out her characters. She gives us the reality of a 16 year old girl who has been sheltered and brought up entitled.
In Contessa we meet a boy by the name of Jon Scott who has had his eyes set on Olivia for years. In all honesty, I don't know how to feel about him. There were moments where he won me over and many of his strong suits reminded me so much of Jack. Intelligent, worldly, passionate, and responsible. I thought it was so clever for the author to bring Jon into Livvy's life- the whole, all little girls dream of marrying someone like their father concept. There were many moments where I fell in love with him as well. But there was always something that lingered in the back of my head which I fell short. I just couldn't fully invest my feelings toward him as a reader.. It may be his incessant attitude to hurry Livvy into being a "grown up." I just was not down with that. *LOL* I am happy though that Lori is going to continue with Livvy's story and I pray that Jon's character grows as well as our heroine and proves me wrong.
It was great to be able to catch up on Jack's and Emi's life together as well. Their love for each other, even though not the main focus of this book, still shined bright. Emi as a mother blew me away, for someone who was so flighty and unsure from Lost & Found, it was satisfying to find her so sure of her place in this world. A happy medium between a mother and also a friendly ear to her daughter. She had such a poised and calm demeanor about her.
My heart constantly broke for Jack and my respect for his character was amplified even more so in this book. He stood by his daughter no matter the severity of her actions and her words. Jack exemplified the true definition of being a father. You will all fall in love with him 10 times over as I did.
I felt this was a great start to a series. Getting to know Olivia's struggles and weaknesses but at the same time watching her progression to someone who may finally realize the impact and power she has on so many people in her life. I am excited to continue the journey with her in Lori's upcoming follow up books, Olivia & Livvy.
I fell in love with Emi's story and was so happy to see her continue on with these characters and we get to see Livvy's story! Livy is a typical teenager, full of angst and on the cusp of adulthood. Jack and Emi are amazing parents but Livvy clings onto a person from Emi's past, trying to make sense of who she is. Livvy is also a bit infatuiated not only with this person, but with a boy. Jon Scott.
Lori L. Otto doesn't give us clean stories that easily end with fluffy HEA, no she gives us tales of a person going through a journey and though that journey you get to see the friends and family that surround her. These people are the ones that will help Livvy through whatever lies in her path. I think we see that in this book, the set up for Livvy's future.
Livvy is very much a teenager. She has lived a pretty plush life, let's be real here. Jack and Emi have through their hardships in order for Livvy to never go without. Oh Jack. I felt for him as he deals with his daughter that is quickly growing up. I hurt for him and had multiple times during the book where I had to slap my forehead when Livvy does something stupid. (Which can seem like a lot...)
Jack and Livvy are trying to figure each other out. Livvy is also testing any boundary put in front of her, most with her new boyfriend Jon. Jon *hearts in eyes* I loved Jon because he is so kind and acts much older for his age. He is smart and knows that Livvy has some growing up to do.
Overall, this book, to me, was about family and how strong that strength is. It was also about love, new love and finding your balance as a teenager trying to be everything you want to be. I seriously can't wait until the next book in this series, because I love watching Livvy grow and I love reading about this family. Love. So trust me, you want to not only check out this book but also check out the Lost and Found Series as well.
First off I bought this book only reading the first line of the description of it off of Amazon. And while I was reading Not Today, But Someday written also by Lori L. Otto.
My thoughts on this book, I will try not to give any spoilers away, because I hate spoilers myself.
This book was riveting and heart wrenching at times. I found myself mad a lot at the main character Livvy for acting the way she did throughout the book. But once I was able to reach inside of myself and remember how I was when I was her age, I was able to relate more with Livvy and began to open myself up to her.
About Jon, I will not say too much on him except I am unsure about his character and whether or not I even like him right now. I am not sure what his intentions are at the moment but am will to hold off any opinions or thoughts about it until I read the next book coming out.
What I loved about this book was the growth that Livvy did do throughout the book, she blossomed from a "teenager" only seeing things her way, to a young adult and looking at the world and others differently. I also loved the fact that her parents were so supporting and loving of her throughout the book, no matter what she did wrong. Especially her dad, there was nothing she could do wrong in his eyes it seemed. She was his Contessa. And that just spoke to me beyond words.
This book is not one of those that you can just rush through, I had to put it down and pick it back up several times to be able to digest and process different things throughout it. I will say this Lori's writing style is profound and I absolutely love it. It speaks to me in ways that only a few books do. So on that note, my reasoning for giving it 5 Stars was this: The characters and how they interacted with each other was perfect. The story line flowed and was not dull at all. It dealt with real life situations that people go through everyday and portrayed them in a realistic POV. I could go on and on, but I will stop here and let you find out for yourself what you think of Contessa (Choisie). Thanks for reading.
I really liked the beginning of this book for a couple of reasons- 1) I was expecting a dark and dramatic contemporary YA/Adult book and at the beginning I could read away looking forward to the dark and dramatic bit. 2) I loved the father/daughter relationship introduced at the beginning.
Then I continued reading and my enjoyment lessened and lessened, for a couple of reasons- 1) It turned out to be an old-fashioned chick lit book. There were no dark and dramatic parts (except for a misbehaving teenager). I was expecting something exciting, like Livvy having an affair with a 35 year old man or having a breakdown or something serious. It was just a book about family relationships and a teenager getting older. Yawn. 2) I slowly grew to hate Livvy more & more. She was so unlikeable, immature, naive, ungrateful, and just plain frustrating. The way she treated her dad was so awful, and there wasn't even a reason for it. 3) I did not feel anything for the romance element. Jon was so blah and condescending. I thought he was going to get with her just to steal her virginity or her money, especially after he said "I love you" after just one date. But no, it was an actual uninteresting normal "romance".
I was surprised to find out that there was a trilogy of books before this one about Emi, Nate & Jack. This book had potential to be really good, and I really liked the father Jack, but the story didn't really go anywhere unfortunately.
I love this book! Lori does an amazing job showing what is like to be a teenage girl and everything a teenage girl goes through.
When I started reading it, I was a little annoyed with Olivia but remembering how it was to be a teen, I could relate to her more. The story is focused on Olivia, the main character, and it shows young love in a beautiful way. That's one thing I love about the book. If you're in love for the first time now or if you've already been in love before, this book will take you back to that moment when everything was new and exciting. It's mainly about her love life but it is also about her family, her friends and her passion in art. I would definitely recommend it and I can't wait till we can read Olivia, the second book in the series.
This is a spin off series but I would highly recommend to read Emi Lost and Found Series by Lori Otto first. It is an amazing story about Emi, Contessa's mom, and you can find out everything that happened 15 years before Contessa. It's a Contemporary Romance about a woman in her late twenties. You will see Lori's style makes you feel very connected to each character. Although it's not neccesary to read it to understand this book.
Apparently everyone but me is in love with this author's writing. I had no idea going into this story that it was the spin-off for a previously published series that is recommended to be read first in order to understand what the hell is going on in Contessa, but I disagree with that--unless you cared for this novel then I guess you may want to learn of the back story? I obviously do not.
I found the main character, Olivia aka Contessa, to be annoying and ungrateful. I could not stand the mother's voice being so...sulky. As for the dad, well, I did like him and felt sorry for how his daughter was treating him, but I guess that is to be excused because she was behaving like your typical teenager. Or something. Again, I disagree. While I agree that sometimes as a teen you may pull away from your parents, you are not allowed to be rude and disrespectful without consequences.
Along with the storyline I did not care for, the author's writing just did nothing for me. I was bored with the whole thing and the fact that Otto droned on and on for what felt like forever to an end that was wholly anticlimactic.
An advance reading copy was provided by the publisher via Netgalley.
After reading the emi lost and found series. I immediately dive into Contessa and Lori Otto never dissappoints. I loved it!!! the story is about emi and jack's teenage daughter. First, I though this book was all about first love but it was more. It was love between Jack and Emi, Love between parents and their children and what touches me more in this book was the relationship between Jack and Livvy, I liked Jack in the Emi series but this book made me loved him. There were parts in the story where my heart was breaking for Jack because Olivia was so selfish and so stubborn, a typical teenager attitude who wants to grow up fast and thinks she's always misunderstood. Good thing she redeemed herself at the end. Jack on the other hand showed the patience and love of a father and I truly admire how he handled Livvy's stubborn attitude. Then there's Jon, the swoon worthy boy who fell in love with Livvy. He's mature and determined. He handled Livvy pretty well. and I can't wait to see how Jon and Livvy's lives will unfold in the next books. Lori Otto did an amazing job in this story. It's realistic and the characters are relatable and it provides a good foundation Livvy's story.
It was really nice reading about jack's relationship with livvy. In the original series, Jack was like the "perfect" guy. But over here, we see more vulnerability in him when he deals with his daughter.
I appreciate that the author hasn't simply gone ahead to explore other characters, but took an "old" character from the previous novels and developed it even more here.
I was glad to experience the after years of Emi and Jack.
Livvy is the typical teenager. She takes everything for granted and hates the wrong people. She is stubborn, but she is also good. It balanced out for me. I hated the fact that she made Jack feel so unwanted. She was obsessed with Nate, and it broke my heart for Jack. It's like Jack always came up second when it came to Nate. It's sucked. He put everything of himself on the line and was treated like crap by Livvy. I'm glad she realized how horrible she was acting. Poor Jack. The good side to Livvy was that she was a good teenager. Yeah she fooled around and did some things, but who hasn't at that age? Guilty. She didn't have sex, drink, or do drugs. I admired that about her.
So yeah, she was a disappointment at times, and I wanted to smack her, but I also wanted to give her a pat on the back for being responsible.
