“These are two awesome writers that have combined their skills together. The drama builds with each paragraph you read. Wanting to know what happens will drive you to the end. These two authors play very well together. You will see how all sides of the law collide and how things get done. I commend these ladies for a job well done. The stories complimented each other very well.” ~ Cecile, Night Owl Reviews, Reviewer’s Top Pick
“This is an excellent mystery with suspense and eroticism that keeps it fast moving.” ~ 5 Hearts, Dee, The Romance Studio
Jenna Byrnes could use more cabinet space and more hours in a day. She’d fill the kitchen with gadgets her husband purchases off TV and let him cook for her to his heart’s content. She’d breeze through the days adding hours of sleep, and more time for writing the hot, erotic romance she loves to read.
Jenna thinks everyone deserves a happy ending, and loves to provide as many of those as possible to her gay, lesbian and hetero characters. Her favorite quote, from a pro-gay billboard, is “Be careful who you hate. It may be someone you love.”
2-1/2 stars. I liked the box set enough to want to finish the series, but I wound not re-read. Here are the things that bothered me the most: *The event that ties all the stories together is not told in the voice of the character who is recounting it. It's pretty much word for word, lending no new thoughts or insight into the character. Also, the men didn't really do anything at all during this event, so the wheels set in motion in response to the event aren't believable. *The sex scenes were boring, despite the descriptive language used. The dirty talk just wasn't convincing and ended up coming across as annoying. *There were some flaws that just really irked me; like at the end of one book, one of the main characters is seriously injured (knife in the side, coughing up blood) and then the book just ends. A 1-page epilogue would have been preferable over ending the book completely with nothing but the other character's observation that his lover was looking a bit more relaxed as he was wheeled into the ambulance. Another problem was in a sentence that was a sudden plot twist, the same word was used twice. It was really distracting and lessened the impact of the twist. *I spent the first half of the last book trying to figure out who the main character was and what he had to do with the others in the series. Finally, I figured out that it really didn't have anything to do with the others. The authors should have made that apparent by calling it a bonus story on the title page or something. Despite my many issues with his book, I can see how it would be enjoyable and the premise really was a pretty good idea. I was interested enough to read all the books, so that's why I chose to round up to 3 stars instead of going with 2.
Wanted Dead or Alive: 4 stars Livin' on a Prayer: 2 stars Never Say Goodbye: 3 stars I'd Die for You: 1 star Willing: 2 stars Able: 1 star
This collection of shorts kinda disappoints me. It had an interesting premise, following a group of men who experienced something traumatic together in prison during life on the outside, but it fails to deliver. First of all, that "something traumatic" honestly didn't affect these men all the much; it seemed circumstantial and just something to tie the stories together. Take away that supposedly inciting incident, and the stories wouldn't have changed a bit, except for a couple tiny details.
Then the men, especially, and pardon me for stereotyping, men who just got out of prison and have led hard lives, fall for each other incredibly fast. I can go for "insta-love" done right, but this wasn't it. Their feelings didn't feel genuine.
And lastly, there were a few times when I just had to throw my hands up and wonder what in the world the characters are thinking. Sometimes it was just unbelievably stupid. Why in the world would a man just out of prison try and take down a drug dealer by setting up a "sting", for example. That's just asking to get arrested! And how do you bring the police in without getting yourself mixed up in things too? Honestly, that never was really resolved either, which left me scratching my head. And the procedurals in the last two shorts just struck me as really inaccurate.
In its favor, a couple of the stories were pretty good. I particularly liked Wanted Dead or Alive, and wouldn't have minded more with those characters. The writing is also fairly clean, which is a big bonus.
