The author was (it was first published in 1986) an inveterate and unabashed murderer of wildlife, so in a way I hate myself for having liked the book so much. To anyone who doesn't know the fens, his evocation of the mystery and uniqueness of the landscape may fall flat, I suppose, but the book is beautifully written, to the extent that after a while I almost forgot how much I hated his reason for being out there. Needless to say, it displays an intimate knowledge of the fenland wildlife, especially its wildfowl. The book is also full of fascinating local characters, poor but resourceful, of a type I got to know well in my time working there. I recommend reading it and making up your own mind.
