Gravity Masters: Order of Scion book 2

Rate this book
What is the Order of Scion?
Where do they get their power from?
And most importantly, what do they want with Lieutenant Mitch Murphy of the Colonial Marine Corps?Humanity has just begun to venture out of their home system and the universe is a very busy place. There are untold numbers of hostile, alien species. Some have great intelligence, others are savage beasts, and they all want what the humans have. The CMC was driven off New Terra, but with Leo Squad in place they’re primed and ready for a new fight and to reclaim what they lost—no matter how many Marines have to die.

Mitch Murphy is a guest on board a strange alien ship. He’s been offered a place in the mysterious Order of Scion, but he has no idea who they are, or what they are really all about. It will be up to him to find his way on a strange world millions of light years from home. It could be a journey of incredible discovery, or maybe one of mortal danger.

Gravity Masters is the second book in the Order of Scion series. It’s an exciting adventure in a fantastic new universe by master storyteller Toby Neighbors. If you liked Star Wars, Dune, and Starship Troopers, you will love Gravity Masters and the entire Order of Scion series.

Review of book 1 and 2:

This is one of those books where I really felt I had to read more than the first book in the series before reviewing it. The first book did a lot of setting up but it kind of ended just when we got to the real story.

I like the story. That is what got and kept my interest while reading.

The premise of some regular guy having a really shitty day enlisting for some experimental treatment turning him into a super-marine is already a good start for me. Then we have the Order of Scion which take it to the next level although it takes the entire first book until they are introduced in the last few pages. That is essentially why I really wanted to read the second book before reviewing it.

Apart from the story, which I liked so far, the main protagonist is an overall likable, and competent, guy. Of course he turns out to be a bit more than the rest of the marines, hence the interest from the Order of Scion.

There is a lot of action, marine action, in these books. It is overall quite well made. There are some quirks in the story and the universe the author has created though. It is not always very plausible and sometimes downright bizarre. Especially some of the aliens encountered on New Terra. Here we enter more into science fantasy than science fiction.

But then when the Order of Scion is introduced and we go on to the second book, well then the story is pretty much turned full on into a science fiction and fantasy hybrid.

It is still not bad though and I do wish to see where the story goes.

One thing that really drags down the books though is this utter asshole of a General who only cares about how he will look and his own career. This moron does not shy away from sacrificing his soldiers or nuke a planet just so he can look good. That kind of thing just pisses me off.

Intelligent design drivel

I sligged through the first book in this series, despite a trope heavy intro, lacklustre characterisation and poor editing (if you don't know the difference between wrack and rack, maybe don't do the former to your shotgun)

Unfortunately, this sequel takes a hard turn into intelligent design and Christian symbology so thinly veiled I was expecting Aslan to walk in.

If it could actually manage to be interesting, I could possibly overlook some of the religious propaganda, but no, still boring.

The editing did improve, though, gotta give marks for that.

The first book of this series, “Latent Prowess (really strange word)”, gave a good forerunner to the things that were really going to happen in this book. Mitch Murphy, if you’ll recall, was a down and out loser. He was a weakling in everything he did including his marriage. He lost his job which he hadn’t done anything really to keep it, and then lost his wife to another man. Instead of facing these challenges, he crawled away thinking everything was his fault. Well, it was because he had no self-respect, nor any ambition to amount to anything.

Just by chance, he got selected for the Latent Enhancement Program (LEP) and became a Colonial Marine, a very large and strong Colonial Marine. The LEP serum also improved his mental acuity in that they made him the first LEP Marine Officer. Now he was known as 2nd Lieutenant Mitch Murphy. And he was joining his platoon of other like-enhanced Marines that formed the Latent Enhancement Operators (LEO) Platoon. They never previously had a LEP officer so this was something new and they were eager to make it work.

Fortunately, Lt Murphy was very adapt at learning new things. He had learned well at his Officer Training, as short as it was, and now he was learning from some highly motivated and intelligent NCOs. They in-turn were pleased to have an officer to lead them that was like them and also seemed know what he was doing. That was proven when they were deployed to New Terra to help stop the aliens from taking over this Earth colony.

While the fighting was fierce, there were just too many of the Lymies (spider-like aliens) to defeat although the fleet and the Marines tried. They finally realized that it was best to evacuate the planet taking as many colonist as could be loaded up in the shuttles available. Except there weren’t enough shuttles. Some colonist were going to be left behind. Lt. Murphy and his platoon were loading on the last shuttle to leave when a father with his young daughter run up just as the shuttle door was closing. He pleaded to Murphy to at least take his daughter. Murphy, acting on impulse, jump from the shuttle and picked the man and his daughter up and threw them on in his place. The shuttle door closed and took off. No one was coming back for Lt. Mitch Murphy and he knew that.

He set about setting up a defensive position as best he could but the Lymies were coming in force. At the very last, a larger alien landed in a strange spaceship near Murphy and was looking for a fight. He wanted to kill the last human on this planet and claim it for his species. Yet, another strange craft also landed and two other aliens defended wearing robes. They told the large alien to leave or suffer the consequences. It did not so the three aliens started to battle with what appeared to Murphy as swords.

This fight didn’t last long with the two aliens finally getting the better of the larger one. After its death, they turned to Murphy and asked if he wanted to go with them. They said it would be important to his civilization if he would join them now. Since Murphy was tired and had no hope of being rescued anytime soon. He decided to go with these new, strange aliens. Little did he know his life was again about to change.

Lt. Murphy was chosen to become a member of the Order of Scion. That involved a lengthy indoctrination period of training and learning. He would soon be able to do things that no other human could or would have thought to have been possible. Yet, one of the stipulations of joining the Oder of Scion was that he couldn’t return to Earth anytime in the near future, someday by not soon. What Murphy really wanted to do was go back to New Terra and save his friends. Will he get the chance to do so?

A good series with a human finally getting portrayed as something other than a weakling. Book three, “Gravity Storm”, is available for pre-order on Amazon and should be avialable by 7 May 2024.

Very Interesting Space Novel

Typical gu and makes good story. Some interesting human physical development involved with subsequent results developing in the story. The extra terrestrials involved are realistic and their abilities are simply fantastic. The interpersonal relationships are quite interesting and the ending is leading to more!

A New Military SCF that I found rather enjoyable

I read this zafter running out of books on my want to read list. I had no expectations, and normaly don't go for, seemingly, fantasy leaning books. This is and isn't a fantasy book tho. Sound strange? Grab a copy and see for your self. It's full of action and lots of things to make you think. Good reading!

Interesting well written, Neighbors starts out setting up the whole concept of Gravity Masters.though the plot is predictable he keeps the action moving are fairly good pace sort of drags toward the end of the and the climax is sort of a non cliImax! totally out of this world

Massive life changes for Mitch. Leo squad just holding onto life by a thread. General Mercer manipulating for his own power in the future. Tensions and danger on multiple fronts.
Every day seems to hold another test for Mitch.
Great series.

A good easy read

A great story. And I always have a soft spot for the Marines. I'm a 20 year retired Navy Seabee who worked very closely with the Marines for 3 years. Hopefully our Marines never have to fight alien's. I like the storyline and can't wait for the next book.

Love the story, the characters were believable and it kept my interest all the way. The language was clean and the plot is different, something I haven't read about the before.

Really different from book one.

Book one showed us how the main character was made into a super Marine. Book 2 takes it further and shows MC turning into a superman.

The Order of Scion

After a lull in the battle to evict the spiderlike aliens currently holding the destroyed buildings on Terra, the second human civilization and home to millions of people. The Terran forces were losing too many people and were making a strategic withdrawal when Lt. Mitch Murphy left the shuttle and walked into the dark.
Mitch, was chosen due to his superior strength, intelligence and speed. His SSO modifications enhanced his strength and speed. What the Order of Scion taught him made his natural attributes and SSO enhanced abilities hundreds of times better, and they taught him to notice and utilize the force of gravity. Mitch took to the training like he was born to it.
His new knowledge and abilities would allow him to help his friends in their war! First he had to convince his new bosses. Great characters and storylines make this an amazing read!
