Called it quits at 40%. Then skimmed the rest

I had a lot of feelings about this book. Not all good. I was super excited about it. It’s a new to me author, but the ad I saw made it appear like it was right up my alley. It was not. It had potential, but the execution was all wrong. I found myself skimming before finally caving and calling it quits when I was just becoming more critical and enjoying it less and less.

This wasn’t identified on Amazon as being in a series, so I bought it on its own. After just the first chapter through, I feel like it must be part of a series as there are a number of names mentioned without identifying who they are in relation to the characters. As if one is to already know who they are and what their stories are. Even in a labeled series, typically the first time a character is mentioned tried or introduced they are identified. Darren and Millie must have been in a previous book, as their relationship is mentioned many many times. Repeatedly it is mentioned that their relationship is surprising, and that Millie is actually a billionaire and inheriting an “NFL club” (that’s not the proper American term btw). It’s strange that they didn’t identify who everyone was at the beginning, with the assumption that the reader had read the previous books, yet this gets mentioned over and over to make sure it’s drilled in our heads.

From a continuity standpoint- at the very beginning she states she is “7 months” pregnant. Then she follows up with saying she has three months until she delivers. She’s been gone for 6 months at this point, and was 8 weeks pregnant when she arrived in Bristol. So she should have been “8 months” pregnant at that point. (Using months is always questionable as it’s accurately described in weeks not months, but I’ll let that go). When she said she going to be flying from UK to the USA I was skeptical as there are gestational time limits in pregnant women flying. Then in the third chapter she tells someone at the airport she is only 26 weeks pregnant. 26 weeks is not about to pop, nor has she been gone long enough for that to be accurate. And after telling the employee she’s 26 weeks along, she says she’s going to deliver in only two months. Nitpicking maybe, but as an OB nurse I hate when things are blaringly wrong and inconsistencies always irritate me. If she were really 8 weeks pregnant when she arrived in Bristol 6 months ago, she would be 34 weeks minimum. (She later says it has been more than 6 months). The math isn’t mathing. If she’s only 26 weeks, then that baby was conceived after she arrived in Bristol and is not Jake’s.

There is a lot of repetitive use of ellipses. Most conversations have so… so many… worked into the dialogue. Every… time…. It became distracting and took me out of the story.

They are 19 and 23 years old, and very immature. She moved back home, he learns she is pregnant now, but they have not actually spoken about it. He’s waiting for her to reach out on her terms. She’s whining about how he hasn’t contacted HER, and how awful it will be for their daughter if he’s a deadbeat. Yet she has not once spoken to him to even tell him the baby is his. Her friends had already told her he was waiting for her, and she needed to be the one to contact him. Yet she didn’t, and still waxes on and on about how she’ll explain to their daughter that her father “doesn’t want anything to do with her.” 🙄🙄 You have to tell him he’s a father first before you can decide he’s a deadbeat.

He finally makes the first move and shows up at her house. Her inner monologue is preteen fangirling:

“Jake is here! He's come to check on me - no, on us. I can't remember the last time I was so excited to see him. I'm sure it was our first kiss or the first time we made love.”

Then seconds later she bust out the bipolar mood swings:

“We're alone now and I don't like it one bit. Jake doesn't say anything at first, he just looks at me and waits. If he's waiting for me to start the conversation, he's got another think coming. After all, he came to me. Yes, it's ridiculous, and I know I have so much more to say to him than he has to say to me. But I can't bring myself to start the conversation.”

I had to double check their ages, as I was pretty sure this was a 15 year old girl’s behavior. But nope. Just an annoyingly immature 19yo. You’re about to be a mom. Time to grow up. It’s hard to be annoyed with her awful brother’s treatment of her when she just reinforces his beliefs with her immaturity.

OW drama: yes. To be fair, after two years of secretly hooking up exclusively he makes it clear they are only a fling. So she ends things and leaves for England. So he was well within his rights to jump right into bed with another woman. And he does. Virginia makes it quite clear in front of Phoenix that they have been sleeping together. Phoenix and Jake argue about it a few times, he throws in her face that he is none of her business and that they were never more than a secret hookup anyway. Class act.

Jake is not the swoony hero in the story. He’s an immature player who spent two years hooking up with his best friend’s little sister in secret. She was worth stabbing his friend in the back, but not worth being in a real relationship. While he claims time have had a crush on her that he wouldn’t let go further than a secret affair because of “bro code”, he also spent their time together flirting with other women in front of her, telling her they could never be more than a hookup, and even while she is pregnant with his baby he cruelly tells her she was nothing more than a warm body to him and he owes her nothing.

“What do you want from me?” he growls. “Yes, I have to tell Denver that I got you pregnant and that we had an affair. Nothing more, nothing less. We weren't an item, so I don't owe you anything, and it's not my fault you took a break from sex the last few months.”

I was hoping for a swoonier hero in this story. It’s very disappointing frankly. At 34% in when he said the bit above I decided that even though she’s got the maturity of a 15yo herself, she deserves better and I wish she would wind up with someone else.

It’s the immaturity and the back and forth hot and cold that did me in. He literally tells her one minute she’s nothing to him, then they are kissing and touching the next. Without resolving any issues. They are basically that toxic couple in high school that keeps breaking up and getting back together. I’m shocked by how many times they argue, something completely cruel and/or inappropriate is said, then they just brush it off. This is a problem I have with very young characters I guess. I need them to act like the adults they are supposed to be. Frankly, it would be healthier for everyone, especially their baby, if they did NOT wind up together.

3'5 ⭐ me ha gustado mucho ver cómo Phoenix se ha enfrentado a sus inseguridades, y ver cómo sus amigas intervenían para hablar con ella y ayudarla a ver el mundo de otra forma más sencilla y que no se le hiciera bola. De Jake me ha gustado ver mucho su comprensión, y sobre todo no he visto esa actitud de macho alfa que se veía un poco con Darren y Denver. Aunque el tema de no querer decirle la verdad a Denver se me ha hecho un poco bola.

Questo libro non mi ha detto assolutamente niente, praticamente lei fa in Inghilterra per allontanarsi da lui perché anche se molto innamorata sa perfettamente che noi non la sceglierebbe mai, infatti è il migliore amico di suo fratello, una volta lì a Bristol non si sente molto bene e la sua coinquilina la porta dal dottore dove le dicono che è incinta, comporta emozionata decide di mantenere il segreto, quando torna a Chicago è ormai di sette mesi, la sera gli ritorna la vanno a prendere Jake che è il padre della bambina che suo fratello, il fratello comincia subito a tartassarla di domande, ma lei non dice niente si arrabbi soltanto perché è davvero molto pesante, Jake invece cerca di aiutarla a sviare l'interrogatorio, ma capisce che quel bambino è suo, dopo un po' finalmente Jake prova a trovare e parlano della loro situazione con un vuole perdere il suo migliore amico e quindi non possono stare insieme, ma si prenderà le sue responsabilità, intanto va avanti la gravidanza loro si vedono solo con gli altri oppure ogni tanto lui passa a trovarla per sapere come sta, in più lei viene a scoprire che mentre non c'era lui è andato anche con altre ragazze e questo le fa molto male, ma invece di chiederle di perdonarlo lui le dice che non sono mai stati insieme, che e la sua vita e non deve intromettersi, in pratica si comporta da grande cretino, Piano piano lo diranno a tutti che il padre è Jake, qualcuno sarà deluso altri diranno che lo avevano già capito, il fratello di lei lo picchierà e così via, una delle cose che mi hanno dato più fastidio è che lei parla della gravidanza solo in termini negativi, recrimina a lui il fatto che sia incinta, il fatto di non sentirsi più bene con il suo corpo, e non vuole andarci insieme perché si vede troppo cicciona, quando poi partorisce le cose non migliorano molto perché lei ha sempre paura di essere troppo poco per lui, si metteranno insieme finalmente e si diranno ti amo anche se si era diciamo capito, la cosa più destabilizzante di questo libro è che lei negli spazi ormonali impressionanti, sembra pazza e lui le riprese soltanto fino allo sfinimento che non stavano insieme e che non le deve interessare se è andato con altre, che la sua amicizia con il fratello è più importante di tutto e altre cavolate, praticamente un bambino nel corpo di un ragazzo adulto, lei non sa cosa fare nella sua vita oltre ad essere una mamma, lui vuole continuare ad andare alle feste come se non fossero genitori, praticamente stanno dicendo e della figlia è un problema, bello, ma pur sempre un problema, mi dispiace ma non mi è piaciuto per niente.

Personajes superficiales, sin profundidad, sin carácter, sin personalidad. En fin, que sin nada. 

Todos los problemas o no se resuelven o sí lo hacen, pero de la forma más dramáticamente telenovelera posible. 

No hay ni un personaje (excepto por quizás John) que tome decisiones maduras o que razone tan siquiera un poco. 

Premisa medio interesante, pero que no aporta nada nuevo.

El final ni lo parece. Deja tantos cabos sueltos que hace ver que el libro no es autoconclusivo

Reseña de "El futuro padre perfecto" de Mrs Kristal

Todas hemos soñado en empezar de cero y descubrirte a ti misma. Esa era la idea de Phoenix, pero todo se tuerce nada más llegar al descubrir que está embarazada. Además, no ha dicho nada ni a su familia ni al padre del bebé. Tiene mucho miedo de decepcionar a todo el mundo, pero ya no puede ocultarlo más. Tiene que volver a los Estados Unidos y afrontar las reacciones de todo el mundo, incluida la de Jake.

✨ En anteriores entregas de la saga y en especial en el último libro, tenía curiosidad por saber qué estaba haciendo Phoenix en su aventura. Parece que la autora me hubiera leído la mente, porque esta entrega ha estado centrada en ella y en Jake.

❤️‍🩹 El personaje de Phoenix carga con mucha presión: presión por estudiar, por no decepcionar, y por descubrir su pasión. A diferencia de las novelas anteriores, en esta entrega admite que tiene estas dificultades y se abre a compartirlas con los demás. Al ser miedos comunes, me he sentido identificada con ella y la comprendía perfectamente. El miedo a equivocarse le persigue constantemente y no le deja avanzar en muchas ocasiones.

🔁 En ciertos momentos, los pensamientos de ambos personajes eran algo repetitivos. Al tratarse de una novela narrada desde dos puntos de vista, era complicado no sentir como repetidas ciertas reflexiones de los personajes. Eso sí, esta percepción no me ha alejado de la narración ni me ha impedido disfrutar la historia.

💡 Durante todo el libro he tenido la sensación de que Jake tiene un miedo atroz a comunicar sus debilidades. El hecho de estar en un entorno altamente competitivo hace que vea compartir los miedos o dudas como una debilidad, pero hay veces que para mejorar hay que decir lo que uno siente.

🔥 Esta entrega ha estado cargada de escenas subidas de tono. Sin embargo, estas escenas también han servido para tratar temas como las inseguridades corporales. Me encanta como la autora hace que las sientas reales e integradas en la narración.

Decir que tengo unas ganas locas de leer la última entrega de la saga es quedarme corta.

El peor de la serie. No me ha gustado, la actitud y los pensamientos de ambos personajes no son para nada lógicas ni lo que esperaba. La evolución es demasiado brusca y las discusiones acaban de manera extraña, como si los enfados aparecieran y desaparecieran como por atre de magia. No se ahonda en lo importante, no se tratan los temas con profundidad y la trama queda toda superficial porque le falta desarrollo.
Phoenix me ha caído muy mal. No me ha gustado nada cómo encara las cosas, su tontería con la parte sexual y su falta de coherencia en cuanto al futuro. De hecho, queda en el aire y eso no tiene lógica. Es una niñata, no encara la realidad como toca, no se enfrenta a las situaciones, no le dice a Jake qué piensa y qué le duele y no lucha para nada por lo importante. Es incoherente que no quiera que Jake hable con su hermano, absurdo hasta decir basta.
Jake tampoco ha acabado de convencerme. Sus mil pensamientos contradictorios, cómo se comporta y cómo cambia de un día para otro. No es una persona consistente y le falta un montón de desarrollo.
Este libro se queda muy superficial, le falta mucho, la verdad.
Y lo de Denver... Es de juzgado de guardia...

Loved this book. It was well written and was fun to read. It had humor, steamy parts and a view of relationship drama with respect to dating his best friend's sister. Phoenix and Jake had a no strings attached sex relationship before she moved to England. The other books leading up to this one, although they didn't mention what happened between them, focused on their close relationship. Phoe was in love with Jake and although Jake had feelings for her, couldn't pursue her due to his best friend being her brother. He did not want to lose what they had. When Phoe arrived in Bristol, she realized she was pregnant with Jake's baby but didn't go back home until she was 7 months along. The only part I wasn't too keen on was how long it took her to have the talk with Jake. That showed her immaturity with the situation. Reading this as fun makes me less critical with the review as there were points here and there that annoyed me with Phoe but all in all, I really enjoyed the read.

Es un libro precioso que me ha encantado. ✨📖

Phoenix, a pesar de estar un poco perdida en la vida y asustada por el embarazo 🤰 y por contárselo a Jake, me ha gustado mucho cómo enfrenta sus inseguridades. Sus amigas juegan un papel clave en ayudarla, dándole apoyo y haciéndole ver las cosas desde otra perspectiva.

Su bebé 👶 le da un toque muy tierno a la historia, y ver cómo influye en su relación con Jake me ha parecido precioso. 💖

Jake, por su parte, me ha encantado por su paciencia y cariño. 💙 Su manera de acompañar a Phoenix en todo este proceso, sin presionarla pero dejándole claro que está ahí para ella, me ha parecido preciosa. 🥰

Eso sí, el tema de ocultarle la verdad a Denver se me hizo un poco pesado en algunos momentos, y él en general me ponía bastante nerviosa en muchas escenas. 😵‍💫🙈

Libro elegido para el reto literario del grupo de Juani Hernández, es el tercer libro de la serie, los protagonistas son Phoneix y Jake, parte de la pandilla Phoneix es la hermana de Denver, protagonista del primer libro.
Aunque la trama se centra en ellos, el resto del grupo son parte esencial y ayudan a que todo vaya bien.
Phoneix decide dejar la universidad y viajar para intentar saber lo que quiere, pero las cosas no salen como ella pretende y cuando vuelve a Lincoln ella cree que todo será igual pero poco a poco se da cuenta que las cosas no pueden iguales ni con su familia ni con sus amigos.
Jake por su parte intenta que no le afecte su vuelta pero pronto ambos se dan cuenta que siguen sintiendo lo mismo que antes de irse.
Una historia simple, pero entretenida, me ha gustado bastante y es fácil de leer.

Auch der dritte Band ähnelt den ersten beiden, was das Design angeht. Das mag ich sehr! Das Grün ist zwar nicht so meins, aber neben den anderen beiden Covern sieht es ganz cool aus.

S C H R E I B S T I L:
Auch dieses Buch der Autorin ist locker geschrieben und liest sich schnell und flüssig. Die Kapitel hatten außerdem eine sehr gute Länge, und dass ein Dual-POV vorliegt, hat mir auch sehr gut gefallen! Phoenix und Jake sprechen ein paar Dinge nicht aus und behalten ihre Gefühle teils für sich. Dass man aus der Sicht von beiden lesen konnte, mochte ich daher sehr.

H A N D L U N G:
Phoenix ist für ein halbes Jahr nach Bristol gegangen. Bzw. wohl eher geflohen. Denn Zuhause hält sie es nicht mehr aus: Ihr Studium gefällt ihr nicht, ihr großer Bruder Denver will sie vor jedem und allem beschützen und verhält sich dadurch Phoe gegenüber überfürsorglich und überschreitet gerne auch mal Grenzen... Bspw. hat Denver seinen Freunden verboten, mit Phoenix auszugehen. Doch gerade sein bester Freund Jake, der wie ein Bruder für ihn ist, kann sich nur schwer an den Bro-Code halten: Hinter Denvers Rücken haben Jake und Phoe eine Affäre, die für beide insgeheim weitaus mehr ist, als nur körperliche Nähe. Doch beide - und v.a. Jake - haben Angst, es Denver zu erzählen und ihre Beziehung zu ihm zu gefährden. Sie halten es geheim und weil Phoenix das alles nicht mehr aushält, fliegt sie einmal über den Ozean.
Doch little does she know... Kurz nach ihrer Ankunft in Bristol findet sie heraus, dass sie schwanger ist. Und der Vater des Kindes kann nur einer sein: Jake.
Phoe hat Angst. Sie ist jung, nur ihre besten Freunde wussten etwas von ihrer Affäre mit Jake und wie werden ihre Familie, v.a. Denver und auch Jake auf ihre Schwangerschaft reagieren?
Als Phoenix Monate später wieder nach Hause zurückkehrt, kann sie ihre große Babykugel nicht mehr verstecken. Und anders als ausgemacht, holen sie Denver und Jake vom Flughafen ab. Als sie sie sehen, fallen ihnen die Augen aus dem Kopf. Und gerade Jake ist überrumpelt. Denn er ahnt, wer der Vater des Kindes ist.

P R O T A G O N I S T E N:
Phoenix ist in den Augen vieler eher unreif. Sie weiß noch nicht, wie sie sich ihre Zukunft vorstellt und wenn sie jemand darauf anspricht, bzw. wenn ihre Argumentation in einer Diskussion holprig wird, dann geht sie sofort in die Offensive.
Doch als Phoe schwanger wurde, hat sich das teils geändert. Sie will sich um ihre Tochter kümmern und sie will eine gute Mama sein. Phoe kümmert sich um ihr Kind und sie ist eine wirklich liebevolle Mutter. Nur muss ich zugeben, dass Phoe sich in der Tat öfters eher unreif verhalten hat/unfair war… Das hätte ich nicht unbedingt erwartet, da man sie bereits in Band eins kennengelernt hat und sie dort etwas anders rüberkam… Doch gerade am Ende war sie wieder die Phoe, die ich aus Band eins kenne und sie wurde definitiv etwas reifer.

Jake ist Denvers bester Freund, doch obwohl er weiß, wie wichtig Denver der "Bro-Code" ist, kann er sich nicht von seiner kleinen Schwester fernhalten. Und als sie dann plötzlich schwanger von ihm ist, stellt sich sein Leben auf einmal auf den Kopf.
Er will es mit Phoenix nochmal versuchen. Und zwar offiziell. Und nicht nur wegen ihres gemeinsamen Kindes, sondern auch wegen Phoe. Doch der Start ist etwas holprig… Es gibt Diskussionen und lange Zeit erzählen sie niemandem von irgendwas.
Nichtsdestotrotz, kümmern sich beide um Phoes Schwangerschaft und ihre Tochter. Jake greift ihr soweit möglich und ohne bei anderen den Verdacht zu schöpfen, dass er der Vater ist, unter die Arme, was echt richtig süß war!
Auch, wenn die beiden gerade anfangs immer wieder aneinandergeraten, so wissen beide, dass sie einander lieben. Jake zeigt Phoe, dass sie nicht allein ist, und dass sie keinen Grund dazu hat, irgendwelche Unsicherheiten zu haben (aufgrund der Schwangerschaft, verändert sich natürlich ihr Körper und auch als ihre Tochter schon auf der Welt ist, hat Phoe damit zu kämpfen).
Die beiden sind sehr gute junge Eltern, die sich für ihr Kind zusammenreißen und diesbezüglich ziemlich erwachsen sind!
Nur, was mich etwas gestört hat, war, dass sie nicht so gut im Reden sind: Misskommunikation und fehlende Kommunikation kommen immer wieder vor. Und hätten sich beide am Anfang mal richtig hingesetzt und sich ausgesprochen, so hätte man einiges an Drama verhindern können!

Zu den Nebenprotagonisten auch noch was: Ich fand es richtig cool, dass Millie, Joy, Sienna, Denver, Darren und Tyler wieder vorkamen! Das ist eine sehr coole Clique und ich mochte die Szenen mit ihnen sehr!
Auch waren die Szenen mit Denver - nachdem er alles erfahren hat - witzig! Er muss sich echt noch dran gewöhnen, dass seine kleine Schwester und Jake mehr als Freunde sind XD

F A Z I T:
Der dritte Band enthält bisher am wenigsten Football, aber es war dennoch eine schöne Geschichte!
Das Buch habe ich super schnell gelesen. Es war eine süße, leichte, lockere Lektüre, die auch ein wenig die Unsicherheiten, die ganz oft mit einer Schwangerschaft einhergehen, anspricht. Wie Jake darauf reagiert, ist echt richtig süß! Außerdem spielt auch wieder Freundschaft und Familie eine Rolle, was ich wieder sehr schön fand!
Ich hätte mir vielleicht noch gewünscht, dass noch etwas zu Phoes und Jakes Zukunft gesagt wird, aber vielleicht kommt dazu ja noch was im vierten Band, der sich dann um Joy und Tyler drehen wird (und die Sneak Peaks dazu sind bisher schon sehr gut!!).

3.5 ⭐ carino, mi ha tenuta in ottima compagnia.. alcune cose ripetitive, poi credo che sono errori di traduzione ma due righe prima dicevano una cosa e due righe dopo facevano l'opposto, no sense😅
Poi aldilà di ciò che c'era scritto nelle avvertenze, la protagonista era un po' pesante quando parlava del suo corpo, sei incinta e tutte volevano essere perfette e magre, ma se il tuo uomo ti dice che sei bella e gli piaci nonostante i cambiamenti prima e dopo la gravidanza credici che è così...

awesome Book

This was a quick little read that had me wanted to know what happens next. She comes back from being overseas pregnant and hadn’t told her family anything. Her family has mixed feelings and her brother becomes way overbearing. And the biggest issue is telling him who the father is, because he is NOT going to take it well. Have fun reading all the drama. And will she get to actually tell her baby daddy how she really feels?

El que más me ha costado de leer. No entiendo mucho las idas de olla de los personajes, Phoenix me pone muy nerviosa. Y los saltos temporales a ratos me desconcertaban porque iban acompañados de cambios de actitud con los que no he acabado de conectar. Pero no está mal.
