Love hurts…but that’s the way she likes it.

EXTRICATE is a violent tale of sexual obsession, unfolding on the dark streets of a nowhere town. Peter falls for Judy the instant he lights her cigarette, but she’s his best mate’s girl — and he’s already married. He decides to begin removing obstacles — starting with his wife. How far will he be willing to go? How far does lifelong friendship go when he finally meets the woman of his peculiar dreams?

‘EXTRICATE is a twisty-turny noir tale of dishonor amongst thieves that is skewered with hot lust and cold blooded murder.’

~ Paul D. Brazill, author of Guns Of Brixton and Gumshoe

‘Crime meets erotica in a fevered novella. Graham Wynd has written a fluid and tight story with vivid characters in situations that are inextricably charged with a sexuality from which you will find it hard to extricate yourself.’

~ Richard Godwin, author of One Lost Summer, Apostle Rising and Mr Glamour

A writer of bleakly noirish tales with a bit of grim humour, Graham Wynd can be found in Dundee but would prefer you didn’t come looking. An English professor by day, Wynd grinds out darkly noir prose between trips to the local pub.

Noirishly wrong! Wonderful stuff, deliciously seedy and delightfully hopeless. Just as it should be.

I feel I should be writing this review on a typewriter whilst drinking scotch and chain smoking cigarettes.

Extricate harks back to the crime pulps of the 1940s and 1950s, weaving gritty stories of obsession, fate and hopelessness whilst still retaining its own style. I was fortunate enough to read the paperback version which contained two novellas and a collection of short stories.

The first novella, Extricate, deals with a lustful obsession and sees how far someone will go to obtain the object of their lustful desire. It's gritty, grimey, unsettling and downright repulsive at times...yet it's one of those stories that's paced quickly enough to keep things moving, keep the story interesting and not dwell too long on some of the more repugnant aspects.

The short stories are often varied in terms of themes and usually involve a variety of people meeting a dark fate. Ranging from a man who meets Buddha on a bus, a middle-aged lady assassin and what happens if you cross a girl called Bambi. I found the stories a bit hit and miss with the main exceptions being the above mentioned three.

Throw the Bones was the stand out story for me. Tightly paced and with an interesting twist in the tale (which I won't dare spoil for you here), it combines all the themes of the previous stories into one cocktail of lust, fate, violence and betrayal.

If pulp is your thing, Extricate is definitely worth checking out.

If you're new to pulp, this is a good starting point.
