வாழ்ந்தவர் கெட்டால்

தமிழின் மகத்தனா நாவல் மரபைத் தோற்றுவித்தவர் க.நா.சு. அவருடைய நாவல்களில் மிகுந்த சுவரஸ்யமும், விறுவிறுப்பும் கூடியது ‘வாழ்ந்தவர் கெட்டால்’. இந்த நாவலை வாசிக்கும் போது நாம் பெறும் சுபாவமான அனுபவப் பெருவெளி பிரமிபூட்டக் கூடியது. க.நா.சுவின் நூற்றாண்டு வருடத்தில் அவரின் படைப்பு மேதைமையை உணர்துவதற்கான ஒரு வாய்ப்பாக இப்படைப்பு வெளிவந்திருக்கிறது.

க.நா.சு எனப்படும் கந்தாடை நாராயணசாமி சுப்ரமணியம் தஞ்சை வலங்கைமானில் பிறந்தவர். எழுத்தாளராக வாழ்வது என்ற முடிவை இளம் வயதிலேயே தேர்ந்துகொண்டு வாசிப்பிலும் எழுத்திலும் நிறைவடைந்தார்.

க.நா.சு படைப்புகளில் சர்மாவின் உயில், வாழ்ந்தவர் கெட்டால், ஒருநாள், பொய்த் தேவு, அசுரகணம் முதலான பல நூல்கள் முக்கியமானவை. தமிழ் இலக்கியம் உலக இலக்கியத்திற்கு நிகராக நிற்க வேண்டும் என்ற கவலையில், தமிழின் மிகச்சிறந்த ஆக்கங்களை ஆங்கிலத்திலும், பல உலக இலக்கியங்களைத் தமிழுக்கும் மொழியாக்கம் செய்தார்.

சிறுகதை, நாவல், கவிதை, கட்டுரை மொழிபெயர்ப்பு, விமர்சனம் முதலான பல துறைகளிலும் தரமாக இயங்கிய க.நா.சு தன் காலத்திற்கு மேலான பல பரிசோதனை முயற்சிகளைச் செய்திருக்கிறார். ராமபாணம், இலக்கிய வட்டம், சூறாவளி, முன்றில், Lipi - Literary Magazine போன்ற சிற்றிதழ்களை நடத்தினார்.

நவீன இலக்கிய முயற்சிகளுக்கான சங்கமாகச் செயல்பட்ட மணிக்கொடியின் முக்கிய அங்கத்தினர் இவர். 1986ஆம் ஆண்டு அவரது “இலக்கியத்துக்கு ஒரு இயக்கம்” என்ற இலக்கியத் திறனாய்வு நூலுக்கு சாகித்ய அகாடமி பரிசு பெற்றார். தமிழக அரசின் விருது, குமாரன் ஆசான் விருது போன்றவற்றால் கௌரவிக்கப்பட்டார்.

1988ஆம் ஆண்டு டிசம்பர் 16ஆம் தேதி டெல்லியில் மறைந்தார். 2006ம் ஆண்டு அவரது நூல்களை தமிழ்நாடு அரசு நாட்டுடமையாக்கியது. தமிழ் எழுத்தாளர் மற்றும் நாடக நடிகரான பாரதி மணி க.நா.சு வின் மருமகன்.

A long short story. Nowhere close to Poithevu in quality, but a breezy read nonetheless. It is about has-beens : peoples and cultures and cities. The story follows two friends reuniting after a decade and holds a mystery at its heart. The whole story builds up towards unraveling that central mystery which ends up being very predictable. I liked the descriptions of Tanjore and the undercurrent of nostalgic elegy for its former greatness. The story does not involve many characters and I enjoyed how it revolved around a few people suspended in a detached world of their own.

A good read to pass a couple hours.

This is more of a long short story than a novel. I don't agree completely with the author's idea that nothing that can't be said in 100 pages can be said in 500, but I appreciate his intent. (Side-note: All Tamil novels seem to have huge spoilers in their introduction, no matter how small said introduction is. So avoid introductions if you don't want any spoilers).

The novel starts off innocently enough. I felt like there was a whiff of homosexuality in it. It was about two adult male friends bonding closely, having long walks and talks and just living together. Gay representation in Tamil literature is so rare, so I am probably going to just take this as one, wishful thinking though it might be.

Even though there were some theological discussions in the starting, we don't really get into the meat of anything. The author uses conversations between the two "friends" (yes, I am sticking with my reading of it) as a way to expound some ideas about art and traditions. These were interesting but did not lead anywhere. In the midst of this, we are introduced to the Mammaliyaar family.

I did not expect this novel to get so serious and end as tragically as it did. The initial pages I felt had no suggestion of this. It felt like the novel was going to be something that was light-hearted and easy going. All the humour in the start pointed at that. But in the last few chapters completely unexpected things happen and the novel takes a calamitous turn and concludes on a depressing note.

I feel like may be just a little bit of foreshadowing might have helped. We are supposed to be as shocked as the protagonist is about these events and that might explain the absence of any clue in the start. But if the seriousness of the situation had been imprinted subtly it could have changed the reading of it. The shock effect felt out of blue and not really consistent. I felt like it added nothing but shock value. There was no proper analysis of cause or effect of this.

Otherwise this is quite a good book and it is very short and easy to read. I am curious to read his more popular Poithevu and other works.

The author digresses into philosophical musings rather unnecessarily but the core plot of a fallen city, a fallen family and a fallen man is deep. The story has the nature of a mystery as to why Raghu hates the Mammeliyars viscerally. The final twist is rather bland but the title assumes a new meaning in the end. My favorite line in the novel comes at the end, translated here loosely as "I did not regret that he died; I regretted that he had to live and go through so much".

கோபம்தான் மனிதன் முதல் எதிரி; பெரும்பான்மையான நேரங்களில் கோபத்தின் காரணங்களை பார்த்தால் அற்பத்திலும் அற்பமாகவே இருக்கும், இந்த காரணத்திற்காகவா கோபமுற்றோம் என நம்மை நாமே இழிவுபடுத்தும் அளவிற்கு அந்த கோபத்தின் காரணம் இருக்கும். மனிதன் தன்னுடைய இன்பமயமான நினைவுகளை அவ்வப்போது நினைவூட்ட அவ்வின்பத்தின் இடத்திற்கு சென்று பேரின்பம் அடைகிறான் போலும். அப்படித்தான் இக்கதை ஆசிரியர் தனது பாலியகால நண்பனின் அழைப்பை ஏற்று தன்னுடைய சொந்த ஊருக்கு சென்று அங்கு வாழ்ந்த வாழ்க்கைதான் இந்நாவல். என்பது பக்கத்திற்கும் குறைவான பக்கங்களே உள்ளே நாவல் ஆனால் இதில இடம் பெற்றுள்ள கருத்துக்கோ மனிதனின் வாழ்க்கைக்கு தேவையான பல முகாந்திரங்களோடு நம்முடன் உரையாடுகிறது.

ஒரு நபரின் ரகசியதின் பால் ஆர்வம் கொண்டு அவர் நம்முடன் பழக்கமுடையவரக இருந்தால் அவரிடமே கேட்டு அந்த ரகசியத்தை தெரிந்து கொள்ள முயல்வோம். இந்த முயற்சி தோல்வியில் முடிந்தால் வேறு யாரிடமாவது இந்த அந்த ரகசியத்தை கேட்டு அறிந்திட இருக்கும் எல்லா வழிகளிலும் முயற்சிப்போம், அதுவும் தோல்வியில் முடிந்தால். இந்த ரகசியத்திற்கு காரணமாக இருக்கும் நபரிடமே சென்று விசாரிக்க முயற்சிப்போம், ஏனென்றால் நம்முடன் இருப்பவரின் ரகசியங்களை தெரிந்து ஆக வேண்டும் என்ற ஒரு அற்ப ஆசை. இந்த ரகசியங்களால் நிகழும் நிகழ்வுகள் பெரும்பாலும் குற்ற உணர்ச்சியை சார்ந்ததாகவே இருக்ககூடும்.

இன்னும் பல விஷயங்களை இந்நாவலில் மூலமாக நாம் அறியக்கூடும். "ஐதீகம்" இவ்வுலகத்திற்கு தேவையா என பல உரையாடல்கள் நடக்கும் அதில் மனிதனும் ஐதீகமும், கலையும் ஐதீகமும் என பல வாக்குவாதங்கள் நடக்கும் அனைத்துமே அருமையாக இருந்தது. சுதந்திரத்திற்கு பிறகு இருந்த தஞ்சாவூரின் நிலத்தை கண் முன் நிறுத்தி இருப்பார். க. நா. சு. வின் நாவல்களின் பக்கங்கள் அளவு குறைவாக இருந்தாலும் அதில் உள்ள உள்ளர்த்தத்தின் வாயிலாக நாம் பல அறியக்கூடும்.

Existential Crisis.
வாழ்க்கையில் நிறைவேறாத ஆசைகள் சாதிக்க முடியாது விஷயங்கள் எல்லாம் காரணமற்ற கோபத்திலும் பிதற்றலிலும் போய் முடியும். இப்படி சங்கடத்துடனும் துயரத்துடனும் வாழுவதைவிட மரணம் கொடியதா என்று வாசகனிடம் கேள்வி எழுப்பும் குறுநாவல்!.
