A stunning detective story from the winner of the World Illustration Award'Beautifully-drawn... Subversive, immersive' KATE CHARLESWORTH, author of Sally HeathcoteIn this stunning reimagining of a nineteenth-century Russian crime thriller from the world of Dostoevsky, Carol Adlam presents Charlie Fox, stunt journalist, magician, liar and thief, who reluctantly returns to her hometown of Nowheregrad to investigate the murder of Elena Ruslanova, daughter of a fabulously wealthy glass manufacturer. In Nowheregrad Charlie finds herself caught up in a multi-layered story that is told through the richly varied visual devices of the time. With the unwitting assistance of her lover, Netochka, Charlie unravels the mystery of the Bobrov family, only to face the truth about herself. Exquisitely drawn and compellingly told, Adlam's complex, elegant narrative brings to life the lost legacies of early crime fiction and the first women journalists and detectives.

EN One thing is certain about this book: it offers a visual and narrative experience quite unlike the usual. In some aspects, it reminded me of "In The Mind of Sherlock Holmes", although, in my opinion, it doesn't manage to be as successful in its execution.
It’s not a bad book – visually, it has its charm – but the story doesn’t help make the experience engaging or cohesive. At times, it feels as if the plot and illustrations forget that they need to be in sync to create an effective whole.
In the end, it wasn’t a terrible read, but it didn’t win me over either, despite some interesting moments in the story.
Firstly I want to say the artwork really is beautiful and worth looking at for it but it’s really let down by the story. I’m not sure what went wrong but it’s all over the place, I didn’t know what was happening, who was talking and felt like I missed chunks of information. It was very rushed. It would have worked a lot better as a longer graphic novel or a series of them and that ultimately makes this not a great read.
The Russian Detective is a beautifully crafted graphic novel with stunning visuals and an intriguing start. The story begins with a bang, drawing you into its world, but quickly becomes light, chaotic, and underdeveloped. Promising storylines are rushed, and the reading flow can be confusing. Doubling its length could have allowed for deeper storytelling. Visually captivating, but ultimately felt unfinished.
I enjoyed this graphic novel, which combines historical fiction, graphic novel storytelling and detective fiction.
The art was really expressive, and moves way beyond the traditional 9 square grid. Many pages form one large dark watercolour image, which could then be followed by a series of miniscule sketches moving the story on.
I read the book in one sitting and will go back to it again in the future as I feel there is enough in the art to reward re-readings even after I know the ending.
Simplesmente não me marcou.
This was such a beautiful reading experience. This graphic novel is a big, oversized hardback, excellently bound, with incredible art on every page. Holding it was a three star rating all on its own.
If you like graphic novels it's 100% worth the purchase. Don't steal an experience from yourself and read it on a tablet.
I like to read graphic novels mostly for the writing. This has a charming faux-Victorian feel to it with a smidge of incest, some cross-dressing, a dash of sapphic shenanigans and a brutal murder with a cutthroat razor. But I wasn't mad about the art which was occasionally confusing and the cost of these books relative to the time spent consuming them makes it difficult to maintain the hobby.
The art is lovely and the setting is interesting but I could not follow what was going on in the story and this was after rereading it. I admire the ambition but unfortunately I found in unengaging due to its lack of clarity.
Completely gorgeous and complex drawings to tell this fun classic Russian mystery tale with a queer bent. Don’t fully grasp why the ending needed to happen how it did.
i got this for my sister for christmas because i saw it on an article on the guardian and it looked beautiful. it is very beautiful! but so so confusing--no sense of an ending either
Vale a pena ler.
This is great, based on a lost Russian murder/detective story about a women who is murdered at her own engagement party. I really liked the illustration style here and I noticed some allusions to famous Russian literature and authors - I think the more you know about this the more you will enjoy this.
This is a quick read, very good and would recommend
