Shortly after arrival, Special Agent Penn Kierian is murdered in his hotel room, and Sarah's fingerprints are on the murder weapon. The Italian authorities want to talk to her, but she can't risk exposure to an unseen enemy. She flees to a city she had visited years ago, Umbertide, where she runs into hit men and the ruthless man who wants her out of his way.
Parkman, her colleague, an ex-cop turned private investigator, is summoned to Italy to identify Sarah's remains after a massive explosion.
Sarah's parents, and the people she loves, must face reality and prepare for her funeral, but Sarah has one more trick up her sleeve.

Killing Sarah (Sarah Roberts Book Nine)

Sarah Roberts receives a phone call from her colleague Parkman. It's important they meet right away as it's a matter of life and death. Because Parkman is a close friend, Sarah ignores a warning from her dead sister Vivian to stay away. When Sarah is shot, Parkman fires on the retreating four-door sedan, but is not successful in stopping the shooter. He attempts to revive Sarah until the paramedics arrive to take over. When Parkman gets to the hospital, the police question him about who really shot Sarah. After emergency surgery to remove the bullet and reduce the swelling on Sarah's brain, preliminary results show the bullet came from Parkman's gun.
He asks to visit Sarah in the ICU, but now no one can find her. He is informed that Sarah Roberts was never admitted to their hospital and the doctor Parkman was talking to earlier about her condition has mysteriously disappeared.
Sarah is gone.
When Sarah wakes in a modified ambulance, far from the hospital in Toronto, she has retrograde amnesia, leaving her with temporary short-term memory loss. All she can remember of the night she was shot is the image of a man named Parkman. He is standing in front of her with a gun in his hand as a bullet enters her head.
The people who shot Sarah are still after her. She needs to work with Parkman in order to stay alive, but all Sarah can think about is revenge for the head wound and Parkman is in her sights.
The pain of betrayal goes deeper than the physical wound as Sarah hunts for her former friend while sorting the memories that return in pieces.
Killing Sarah is an explosive ride into the depths of a strong woman who makes mistakes and learns the consequences the hard way.

Sarah Roberts Books 7-9 Set

I’m going to review each book separate then give my final, overall review at the end.

Book 7 — The Vigilante (4/18/16)

One of things I really like about this series is that books are fast reads, with short chapters.

This one was especially violent, but it didn’t spend as much time on what I thought was the major crime. It almost glossed over it, actually. But that was OK. The thing I have always liked about this series that Sarah is a kick-ass heroine that always does the right thing. Doesn’t always work out the way she hopes it would, but it is always as right as it can be. I like that she’s independent and does;t need a man to take care of her.

In this story, there was one time that it slightly went off this path.

I’m sure the author feels compelled to pair her off and give her a mate (after all, love and intimacy is a strong human nature,) but I just wish the author would write it more in the early Sarah way.

It’s because of this, I’m sad to say, and of the concerns I listed above in the spoiler, that I didn’t like this one as much as earlier stories, and can only give it two stars.

Book 8 — The Rogue (4/19/16)

This book is the weakest book I have read in the series yet. It leaves loose ends and gets way too preachy 6/8 the way through.

I have always loved Sarah because she tough, smart and kicks butt. And it’s fun to read. But I don’t want my escapism to be muddled by political issues. I actually rolled my eyes at that section: it went on too long and could have been condensed down to one page.

This story almost made me feel like I might just stop reading this series. Sarah, maybe, as a character has outlived her specialness, because she’s getting soft and the author has to resort to “educating” us dummies about maybe things we don’t want educating about.

I didn’t think this series could get any lower after Book 7. I am sad and disappointed to report that this one is worse. And it started out so good, too. Plus, it had some nice surpassing cameos. (Though I really hope the author doesn’t start doing that more, because I think when authors do that it just comes out looking self-serving and dumb.)

But by end of the book: I was left wondering about somethings that usually get resolved (what happened to Betsy?) and the ending…what the heck was that? It felt like the author got lazy and decided to jump ahead in time to wrap it up. I did not enjoy that ending at all.

I would only recommend this book if you are a purist and must read everything in the Sarah Roberts canon.

Truly, I’m beginning to think that my original thought years ago: that Book 5 felt like a clear ending and maybe it would be best stop there; was right after all.

A low two stars.

Book 9 — Killing Sarah (4/19/16)

This book rebounds the series a little bit. It felt more original and more old school Sarah Roberts. At least as much old school as Sarah could be. But Aaron: sometimes I feel like I really want to wring that guy’s neck! He is just too old fashion for Sarah. She’d be better off without his distrust in her in mucking everything up in her life.

And for that, I’m glad this three book set ended the way it did. Again, I have a sense of a closure with this book in this book. And the closure is better than the last two books.

There are typos in this book, which I have never noticed before in Mr. Saul’s works. So, that was a little off-putting. But the story felt a lot more early Sarah Roberts, if not as violent.

Three stars.

————————————

I have one more three set left (even though that is not the end of the series;) I have always liked this series, even with it’s violent overtones. (It just makes killing the bad guys even more sweeter.) But reading them in three-book set is pure genius for people like me who consume a lot of books over the course of a year, and who need variety. I couldn’t sit down and knock out this whole series at once, (thankful for that!) mostly because I like the variety, bit also because you just don’t need with this set. You can pretty much jump in anywhere in this series after Book 5 and not feel too lost. And that’s another thing that makes this series so likable.

Overall score low three stars. (I know that probably doesn’t make sense, but these books are fun, so it’s hard for me to downgrade the whole set as two stars.)

Sarah is worth getting to know

I have been getting to know Sarah for sometime now. I feel that the next adventure will be just as exciting. These volumes had me smiling, nervous, on edge and even a bit emotional. Jonas certainly knows how to keep you enthralled in the characters and everything that goes with them.

more great stories

I'm not sure if we really want there to be a softer side to Sarah, but it is revealed in this trilogy. Her character is more defined, and tackles more great villains, in great places - I'd love to see this made into a movie or TV series!
