Author Victoria Connelly hasn’t been abroad for fifteen years, but a sudden longing to see the world hits her hard and she decides it’s time to venture forth from her peaceful country cottage.
But what’s it like travelling as an introvert who’s battling menopause, chronic nerves and Google Maps?
Join Victoria as she visits Amsterdam with a friend, Sicily with her brother, Belgium with her husband and Crete – on her own!
With over 20 colour photos, Introvert Abroad is a delightful memoir full of inspiration and humour, proving introverts everywhere can feel the fear and travel anyway.
Victoria Connelly grew up in Norfolk before attending Worcester College where she studied English Literature. After graduating, she worked her way through a number of jobs before becoming a teacher in North Yorkshire.
In 2000, she got married in a medieval castle in the Yorkshire Dales and moved to London. Five weeks after their wedding, her husband, a television news cameraman, was sent to Israel. Convinced something terrible would happen to him, she came up with the idea for a novel about a young widow who starts seeing angels on her desk at work, but was scared to write it in case she tempted fate. It was only years later that her husband admitted to having a bullet graze his shirt sleeve whilst filming in Israel!
Although having had articles and short stories published, it was only when Flights of Angels was published that Victoria was able to realise the dream of becoming a professional writer. Published as Unter deinem Stern in Germany, the novel was made into a film for television by award-winning Ziegler Film. Her second novel, The Unmasking of Elena Montella (Wenn es dich gibt), was published in 2007 and her third, Three Graces (Wohin mit der Liebe), was published in 2009. All three magical romantic comedies are now available as ebooks.
Her first novel to be published in the UK – Molly’s Millions – came out in 2009. This was followed by a trilogy about Jane Austen addicts: A Weekend with Mr Darcy, The Perfect Hero (US title: Dreaming of Mr Darcy) and Mr Darcy Forever.
The Runaway Actress was published in April 2012 and she is currently working on another romantic comedy, Wish You Were Here.
This was a nicely written book, full of vivid descriptions, but I'm afraid the author suffers more from severe anxiety than just mere introversion. She constantly is "fearful" of so many small and petty things, it's a wonder she can mange to go to the supermarket, let alone set foot in a large city like London.
This was a lovely book. Victoria Connelly is one of my favourite authors and her books are always sweet and easy to read. She writes about her own trips abroad after about 15 years of never travelling outside the UK and very bravely goes off with a friend, then her brother and then all by herself. Her description of flying and the travelling around when she gets to her destination are just how I probably would feel and I feel quite a kinship with her. She is very organised and books lots of trips for herself and although a complete introvert, does make some new friends and enjoys herself. I follow her in Instagram and Facebook so see some of her photos of all the places she’s been to which is nice.
This was a lovely, pleasing, and gentle read. Many of us can identify with Victoria's introverted personality-going right back to school days. I can identify with a lot that she says. I was very shy at school. Still am introverted, liking a quiet life. I don't travel much either-I do love reading about others' travels though.
This was such a lovely warm, cosy read, and beautifully told. There are some colour photos included, so you really are right there with Victoria, taking in the scenery on her travels.
Includes trips away with an author friend, her brother, and on her own.
Not too detailed. Just a nice, quick, easy read. A delight.
Written in Victoria's inimitable style. Easy reading and you feel like you are travelling with her. Her journey starts as she travels to Amsterdam with a friend, then onto Sicily with her brother, Bruges and Ghent with her husband and finally Crete on her own. Learning all the time but not letting fear stop her this is a journal of travel that is an encouragement for anyone who has thought about travel but lacked the courage and determination to do it. After reading it you will want to see different places and experience different things. Thoroughly enjoyed this.
What a year Victoria had travelling to new & exciting places. She went on trips with a friend, her brother, her husband & on her own. The latter very brave. What wonderful insights she gives the reader to some amazing places. A great read. Highly recommend.
Quick easy read, nice little vicarious journey with the author across a few different trips, sharing the highs and lows. Love the little list of travel tips at the end of each chapter.
