Whatever It Takes #3

Never Date the Minister

Rate this book
Accidental poisonings. Unexpected tidal waves. Jealous stepsisters. Brides caught cheating in the coatroom at the reception.

Just a typical day at work, when you’re a wedding protector.

And Nessa Martini, the newest and youngest member on staff, is doing her best to fix it all.

Starting with her own chaotic life.

A one-night stand with a hot bodybuilding social media influencer who turns out to be a minister is not Nessa’s idea of personal growth, no matter how much she enjoyed it.

She’s trying so hard to be mature, grounded, responsible, and to get ahead in her career working for Wedding Protectors, Inc., where they guarantee your perfect day – whatever it takes.

But when she ghosts on Mr. Perfect after one night of pleasure and he turns out not only to be the TikTok sensation known as “God’s Gift,” but is also the minister at the wedding she’s assigned to for work, all of Nessa’s careful plans go out the window.

She can’t date a man of the cloth.

Or can she?

Matt Draper knows he’s a study in contrasts. A bodybuilder who makes sweaty, shirtless weightlifting videos for millions of followers – and a minister? He didn’t pick the nickname “God’s Gift,” but he’s stuck with it now.

And he’s stuck on gorgeous Instagram influencer Nessa, too.

It may have been only one night, but it was a phenomenal night, and Matt wants more. Way more. When coincidence works in his favor and they meet at a wedding rehearsal, he takes his chance. She’s slow to warm, and so mysterious, yet social media perfect.

Too perfect.

For a guy who is all about depth and connection, can he break through her surface and find more?

Welcome to the Whatever It Takes series, where every book is a complete HEA and a standalone within the same world, with one couple per book:

From billionaires to BBWs to new adult rock stars, Julia finds a sensual, goofy joy in every contemporary romance she writes. Unlike Shannon from Shopping for a Billionaire, she did not meet her husband after dropping her phone in a men's room toilet (and he isn't a billionaire in a rom com).

She lives in New England with her husband and three children in a household where she is the only person with the gene required to change empty toilet paper rolls.

I still had around 40 minutes left of the audiobook, but I just couldn’t listen more. The miscommunication trope is never my favorite, with some exceptions. But here it definitely didn’t work. Matt and nessa were both quick to judge, acted before thinking and needed others for seeing things in a different light. Also the overall theme of how social media only gives us pieces of a whole made it a story with a purpose. I would have much prefer to hear a love story with well-developed and likeable characters rather than learning something about the dangers of SoMe.

It is safe to say that I just adore Julia Kent's writing and her quirky characters. This one is no different. Wedding Protectors are often faced with a multitude of disastrous situations and they are expected to be on top of every single thing. They are very, very good at their jobs but sometimes, things are completely out of their control and we soon find out how our youngest protector handles herself in sketchy situations. This story, however is about more than weddings. It is about perception and yes, judgment. Julia takes on the dangers of misconceptions in our virtual world and how we perceive people based on what we see on social media. As always, she creates situations that make you laugh out loud but also make you think how it could happen to you and wonder how you would cope or deal with such situations. I laughed until I cried and then cried until I laughed. The best kind of rollercoaster.

You would think by now, after having read so many titles by the author, that I would have learned that she’s going to make me bawl like a baby for each and every possible reason the human body will release tears. Tears of joy, pain, laughter; all of it, and everything in between. And this book asked me to feel them all and then some. Nessa and Matt’s journey to one another through the minefield of social media left me howling with laughter. (Plus, we got more Vince!) It also made me think some really deep thoughts about the challenges they faced. I kind of hate that the book is over already because I’m not at all ready to let go of these characters.
I received a complimentary advance copy of this book from the author.

I read and enjoyed the first book in this series. The second one didn’t sound like my thing, because of the whole older man aspect, just not my thing. But this one sounded perfect to jump back into the series with, and it definitely was! And I was correct because I really enjoyed this one! Sped through it, couldn’t put it down.

I loved that when Nessa realized her one night stand, Matt, was a minister, the way she decided she needed to change her wardrobe to a more demure (the actual definition, not the slang) type of outfit for their first real date. But oh my gosh, when he showed up, it was totally a hilarious moment. I mean how could she believe after he had a one night stand that she needed to dress that way was crazy enough. And he wasn’t a priest, which caused her to think about the series by Sierra Simone, lol.

The weddings that Nessa had to deal with were so crazy as well, and then her personality on Instagram also caused issues for the two of them. However it was a little hypocritical the way Matt acted about her, when he also had an online influencer personality account. It was also fun though, to see what he dealt with at the different churches and congregations he worked with. I loved his grandma and her grandma, and their friendship made for some funny situations as well.

Another hit in this series from Julia Kent

Awe this one was a bit of fresh air in an unconventional way it was so cute. I really enjoyed Matt and Nessa. Especially in the beginning how we meet them from having a one night stand but the way how Nessa forgot Matt’s name and went to look for it and how Matt confronted her was humorous. Loved Sierra Simon’s The Priest reference. This was also a first read for me in this series and I didn’t fell lost at all.

I received this book at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I liked the writing and blurb, but I really didn't like the heroine or the amount of characters that made up this plot. There's a lot of wedding talk, planning etc and the romance got a bit lost under all this.

Julia Kent has again, worked her awesome magic and given her readers a fun, warm, romantic read, that will make you want more. The saddest part of this book, was the story ended and I wished it to continue. There is much to love and enjoy here. A definite favorite and addition to any TBR list.

I would like to thank Julia Kent for providing this ARC in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

4.5⭐️ rounded to 5⭐️on Goodreads and retail sites. Never Date the Minister is the third book in the Whatever It Takes romantic comedy series by a maestro in the genre who brought us Random Acts of Crazy, Julia Kent. I have been loving this series since book 1, and this third book did not disappoint. Julia went from the loves stories of the the agency owners to the youngest person on staff. Nessa had grown into her role at Wedding Protectors, with much more responsibilities than she took on a few years earlier. She met Matt Draper at an Animal welfare benefit and went home together. Nessa took Matt’s number but didn’t agree to see him again, but she didn’t anyway when he showed up as the officiant at a wedding she was protecting. Matt so was overwhelmed by Nessa and pursued her every chance he got, but would he be able to convince Nessa that she was cut out to be a minister’s wife? This was another strong novel by one of my favorite authors. It was uproariously funny, incredibly well written with incendiary chemistry. Matt is one hot minister and Julia always brings the angst, the emotional and the spice. I loved this he falls first, workplace contemporary rom com with so many hurdles for this couple to jump to get to their happily ever after. I sincerely hope that this isn’t the end of this series because there are plenty of characters and chances for hilarity left for the staff of Wedding Protectors. Please Julia, keep them coming! I ardently recommend this series and this book for readers who enjoy a well written Rom Com.

I recently picked up Never Date the Minister by Julia Kent, and I must say, it was a delightful experience! This book is part of her Whatever It Takes series, and it truly showcases her unique blend of humor and romance.

From the moment I met Nessa and Matt, I felt an instant connection. Their chemistry is palpable, and their interactions are both genuine and heartfelt. I especially loved the quirky inclusion of their grandmothers, which added a charming touch and reminded me of the importance of family in our lives.

The plot kept me entertained with its amusing twists—who would have thought I’d be reading about accidental poisonings and unexpected tidal waves? While some moments felt a bit far-fetched, they perfectly contributed to the lighthearted tone that Kent is known for. The pacing was mostly good, but there were a few spots where I felt it could have been tightened up a bit.

Kent’s writing style is witty and accessible, making it easy for me to get lost in the story. I found myself laughing out loud at times while also swooning over the romantic moments. It’s a perfect blend that kept me turning the pages.

Overall, Never Date the Minister was a fun read that captured the essence of romantic comedy beautifully. While it might have its minor flaws, it was an enjoyable experience that I would recommend to anyone looking for a lighthearted escape. I’d give it 4 stars for its charming characters and entertaining plot—definitely worth adding to your reading list!

Never Date the Minister is the third book in the Whatever It Takes series. It can be read as a standalone book, though the series centers around the people who work at a business called Wedding Protectors, Inc. The first two books were the co-owners, and this one is an employee.

Nessa is young, brilliant and besides her job at Wedding Protectors, she is an Instagram influencer at @verynecessary and so successful that many companies send her products hoping for a review. Matt is a Unitarian Universalist minister and also does TikTok videos as a bodybuilder and how you can take good care of yourself and be comfortable with your body. He inherited the nickname #godsgift from followers and it sort of stuck.

The two meet at a charity event for animals. They hook up for the night, have amazing sex, and Nessa does the quick run, even though Matt hoped they had something special going on and wanted to see Nessa more. A short time later, she is working her Wedding Protectors job and Matt is the minister at the same event. A lot of misunderstandings and humor follow. They keep running into each other. Eventually, they do date and while it isn't always smooth sailing, they make a quirky and unique couple. Enjoy following their ups and downs in this modern dating world of social media, and how they work toward their happily ever after.

Once again, Ms. Kent knocks it out of the park! This is an excellent series and who knew that so many things could go wrong with a wedding that you need a company like wedding protectors! This book is so much more than about just finding love. It is about perspective and never judging a book by its cover. How should a minister act, is liking nice things being shallow, what happens when social media posts go out into the world. When Matt meets Nessa, he knows that she is different. That she is someone he can see a future with even though Nessa is not so sure. When Matt is challenged by a firefighter at the gym to carry the equivalent of a person, he immediately picked up Nessa and got on the treadmill. When someone posts a video, the public perception doesn't have context and causes all sorts of issues. Despite the seriousness of the subject, Ms. Kent still brings in levity and laugh out loud moments that make this a thoroughly wonderful story.

I'm really looking forward to reading the next book in this series and catching up with the rest of the cast of characters. Ms. Kent just brings the best stories and I just love her style of writing. I always get excited when I hear that a new release is coming!

Nobody does romcom quite like this talented wordsmith, and this series has been phenomenal since the beginning. Wedding Protectors, Inc. has some very high profile clients who want to ensure their nuptials go off without a hitch.

This one has a new twist with one of the Wedding Protectors employees falling for none other than the minister. In addition, both Nessa Martini and Rev. Matt Draper are social media influencers. In addition to the anticipated wedding shenanigans, we have the added entertainment of Nessa and Matt unintentionally going viral and watching them navigate those muddy waters as they learn about each other.

This one felt a little different to me. It’s funny but not over the top, and goes deeper while contrasting outward impressions with inward character. The idea of a minister who's also a social media influencer is unique, and I love that the one whose job it is to provide guidance and counsel could learn a few things along the way. Charming, humorous, and heartfelt, this is the perfect addition to a terrific series, and you won’t want to miss it.

This is Nessa and Matt's story and the third book in Julia Kent's "Whatever it Takes" series. Nessa and Matt meet at a fund raiser and have a one night stand. Nessa leaves really never expecting to see that hot guy again!. Nessa works for Wedding Protectors and while working a high profile clients wedding she can not believe who she sees! It turns out that Matt is the Minister something she did not ever expect. She has melt down and is determined not to let her seeing him again throw her off her game. Both have ties to social media, she is an influencer and he is someone who promotes a healthy lifestyle with exercise showing anyone can do it. Matt is determined to date her and their journey is not a smooth one, so many things blocking that, yet so many people routing for the two of them. This story has funny moments, intimate moments along with "oh my god" moments that keep you reading. This is another great book by Julia Kent and I can not wait to read more of her writings.

Nessa and Matt meet at a fundraiser and have a scorching night together. In the morning they part ways with no promise of a future "cup of coffee" (IYKYK). In their night together, they never shared anything about what they did for a living. He's a minister by day, and she works as a project manager/assistant to ensure high profile weddings go off without a hitch. Both also have a strong social media presence where he promotes healthy workouts directed at young adults and she's a fashion and design influencer.
Fate decides to cross their paths during their day jobs at a wedding she's managing the wedding that he will be officiating. Instead of trying to temper their attraction, they begin a quiet situationship, until an innocent post exposes them with repercussions on both sides.
Julia Kent never fails at weaving so much humor into her stories! This series about crazy weddings bring more laugh out loud situations with equally touching emotional moments which makes this another winner!

Thank you to NetGalley and Prosaic Publishing for an advance copy of this book!

The book started off SO well! I was instantly intrigued by these two characters meeting, and their framing as unlikely bedfellows. I really liked the FMC a lot, and her world was quite interesting.

But...I was less excited about the MMC, Matt. (Full disclosure, I am in school to become a clergyperson.) A lot of the writing made the book feel like a sales pitch for the UU Church, and there were moments where I felt that the UU world was uplifted at the cost of other religions being portrayed as judgmental or alienating. I understand that there are sects and pockets of religions that ARE alienating and drive people away, but it was frustrating to read about couples reaching out because they wanted someone more open than in their own religion. Again - my feelings will not reflect the average reader's feelings, so take what I'm writing with a grain of salt.

I'm not sure who I would recommend this for - it's a good beach/airport read though!

I am so loving the world that Ms. Kent created with the "Whatever it Takes" series!

This newest installment in this series was fantastic and relevant in today's world.

This is the story of two influencers and how they learned to navigate their relationship and online presence.

This is Nessa and Matt's story!

I have been intrigued by Nessa from the get-go; as an older reader, it was like learning a whole new world when it comes to her. I loved seeing her vulnerabilities regarding her relationship with Matt and trying to navigate that while still being her true self.

Matt is well, God's Gift...a moniker he tries to shy away from, but fits him so well.

I love the input from the grandma's in their story! I loved how both Nessa and Matt make them a priority in their world.

As always, Ms. Kent brings the hilarity and the heart to every story she writes, I can't wait to see what comes next from the employees of Wedding Protectors and the world they live in!

Never Date the Minister by Julie Kent is a self indulgent romance comedy curated by the need for a social media presence

Set in the world of social media Wedding planner has a one night stand with Matt she is blissfully unaware is a minister, blossoming a relationship riddled with issues it has a will they won’t they feel. At first I enjoyed their connection not knowing who they are but as their relationship progressed I found them slightly insufferable. Matt who is completely sincere and authentic in his work as an exercise influencer and a Unitarian Minister is polar opposite to Nessa who focuses more on the materialistic side to social media. Although I found their relationship hard to understand I did enjoy their relationships with their grandmothers giving a familiarity to the story. The writing style was perfect for the light hearted story being portrayed using dual story telling perspectives. Overall I found the book okay and although not my favourite book don’t regret reading as it gives an interesting perspective on dating in the modern world of social media

Nessa is the youngest member of the Wedding Protectors, which is a company that is used to dealing with unusual situations. However, when she ends up having a one night stand with a hot guy who turns out to be a minister, that might be the end of it… except that they end up taking care of the same wedding and have to, well, deal with each other, along with all the crazy situations that only Julia Kent can dream up… All of them seem realistic yet chaotic, and funny, too…

Again, the only complaint which I ever have with her books is that I just don’t want to put it down, which means I just read it too quickly, so… it’s just too short. I would like more, more, more!!!

(Yes, I know it’s because I read quickly, & not her fault, but… the books are so good!)

I received this free ARC through an email promotion, and this is my honest review.

Nessa and Matt were a one night stand that seems to keep turning into more. She ghosts him, trying to be more careful in her private life and more professional at work, no matter how yummy she found him to be, or how fab the night was. When she discovers that he’s a minister, she has a bit of a freak out, and then they keep ending up at the same weddings—he as the officiant, and her in her role at Wedding Protectors, and she really loses it. They are very different people, with seemingly very different goals, and yet somehow they’re also the same. As they get to know one another more, they find commonalities in both core feelings and interests, and mutual attraction. As these two try to figure out themselves and just what’s going on between them, all the feelings and worries and humorous misunderstandings make for a great read!

Gorgeous romantic forever interlude

Matt and Nessa didn't expect each other. Their social media lives were not centered on meeting "the one." But life evolves in unexpected ways, through sly grandmas or inadvertent paths crossing or chemistry that will not be ignored. And so, despite all the unintended detours, interruptions and personal insertions it comes down to realizing the internet is just another distraction and the truth lies in just talking to each other. Holding hands and talking in person - one on one. Getting to that personal interaction is what Matt and Nessa must learn to appreciate, understand and love. This book is all about that journey. Beautifully done story with two wonderful protagonists, lots of helpful advisors, plus a few unexpected competitors to keep things interesting.

A ministers life

Julia Kent has done it again, created a rich and vibrant world I cannot resist.
This is the third book in the 'Whatever It Takes' series.
Now it is Nessa's turn, and it's a glorious, self-aware cacophony of flirting, misunderstandings, misinterpretations, and happiness.
Nessa is very good at her job at Wedding Protectors and excels at her sideline as an influencer, but she must be careful they don't overlap.
She meets Matt at a benefit, and the chemistry is undeniable, but when she confuses the situation, it sets the scene for fun and a greater understanding of the world we all now live in.
I loved this book, I love these characters, and I appreciate the thought, detail, and love that goes into every page.
I highly recommend this book, series, and author.

Nessa Martini works for Wedding Protectors , is an influencer and she meets Matt Draper at a fund raiser and has a one night stand Matt Draper is a minister but also a content creator of a healthy lifestyle and excercise. Perseverance could be Matt’s middle name because he has to chase Nessa to show her his interest. Funny, sexy, great inside view of social media and the images it projects. The trial and trebulations these two will go through are hilarious, so many crossed messages and misunderstandings that can be resolved with communications. The two meddling grandmothers is pure Julia Kent. An enthralling, captivating story with a cast of characters that will make you laugh out loud and make you fall in love with the, even more.

A sweet romance, between a wedding planner and a minister was not at all what I was expecting but I'm not mad about it. I was pleasantly suprised to see how humorous and fun this story was, but also adding an emotional storyline about how social media affects us all, especially those who put ourselves out there for everyone to see.

Nessa and Matt have such a fun, will they wont they back and forth as Nessa rattles the idea of sleeping with a minister. Once she gets over that, we start to see a change in their relationship, and I loved it!

Such a great fun book! Can't wait to see what's next!

One night stand

Or so they thought, when Nessa and Matt met again she slightly embarrassed calling him the wrong name, finding out he was a man of the cloth and relief knowing she hadn't ruined his vows of celibacy well helped him, bringing out the best of each other, and a misunderstanding could be the end for them, talking, to each other and not assuming everything you see on social media is the truth, hard pills to swallow and reality checks for them both with the help and pushy grandma's, nothing short of excellent as expected by Julia Kent, another hit and must read, thank you, Dana Zamora

Never Date the Minister is the third book in the Whatever It Takes Series which is a well written and humorous romantic comedy authored by the delightful Julia Kent. It is the fun tale of Nessa, an Instagram influencer, and Matt, a social media body builder known as "God's Gift", who have a one night stand only to meet again at a wedding rehearsal as the wedding protector and the minister. This entertaining romance has amazing characters, meddling grandmothers, misunderstandings, laugh out loud situations, and a wonderful journey finding love. I highly recommend this creative romantic comedy!

Reading Nessa and Matt's story was delightful and a whole new way to begin a relationship. Physical attraction during an evening wedding evolved into a very awkward morning after situation. However, their desirability continued to grow with each interaction. These characters became endearing as they muddled through the growing pains of a fledgling relationship. Watching them find their way was such a thrill. I thoroughly enjoyed witnessing them grow closer and more considerate of each other's feelings and future goals. This captivating and feel-good story was a complete delight, fast-paced and delicious!!!!! Loved It!!!!!

This is the third book in this series, and this is Nessa and Matt’s story.
These two meet at a fundraiser, and share a 1-night stand, not expecting to cross paths again. Nessa is a professional wedding protector who averts wedding day disasters, only to find out that Matt is the minister at her next wedding.
This is a well written easy to read story, with family, friendships, emotions, crazy antics, humour, witty banter, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining and unpredictable, endearing page turner.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

Love These Wedding Protectors Stories!!

Young Nessa Martini is in charge of her own projects (weddings now). Imagine her surprise when the minister is the man she spent the night with from the Boston Animal Rescue fundraiser.

Real issues (wedding-wise), real relationships, lots of humor and just regular people trying to life their best life. Step family, mistaken identity, sailing, coffee, and product endorsements.

A thoroughly entertaining read!
