Getting your dream job straight out of uni should have seemed too good to be true, and when Ava’s landlord nearly doubled her rent, she figured her dream might be over. As she finds herself unable to afford anything in the city, she’s left with very few options, and no family to turn to.

The one person she does have is her best friend, who recently moved to a new building that just happens to have shockingly low rent.

But she warns Ava away from staying there.

Ava has no other options, however. Surely her friend is just being overprotective, and there’s nothing to worry about. There’s definitely no reason for her to be concerned that her friend never comes out in sunlight any more, or by the fact that everyone in the building has deep red eyes, or the strange dreams that Ava can’t quite remember…

Surely that's nothing to worry about… Right?

In truth, L.C. Mawson lives in a tower in the middle of a haunted forest, far from civilisation and is definitely not a witch who curses those who trespass upon her land. And she definitely cannot turn into a dragon that flies over cities in the dead of night and whose cries are often mistaken for an approaching storm. Where did you hear that? That's absurd...

The only contact she has with humanity is publishing books every so often, which is definitely just for fun and not part of an ancient contract with a trickster god.

This is the first novella in the Lair of Blood trilogy about Ava, a woman with autism and who suffers from fibromyalgia. Ava has a hard time making friends due to her conditions, so she struggles with the fact that her best friend, Rose, disappears for a few years. She is suddenly reunited with Rose and her entry into the world of vampires begins. I enjoyed reading the lore of the vampire hierarchy in this book. It’s quite fascinating and filled with lots of political intrigue. Ava has a hard time knowing who to trust because everyone has an agenda. So far, I want to trust the leader of the coven, Nia, but many others don’t. We shall see in book two.

The Vampire’s Bite is everything you want in the first book of a series. It has drama, betrayal, secrets, heat, and a heroine to root for. I can’t wait for the next book in the Lair of Blood series.
