About the author

Graham Joseph Hill (PhD, Flinders University) is one of Australia’s most prolific and award-winning Christian authors. His books explore Christian spirituality, Australian society, missional and intercultural theology, World Christianity, and the work of justice and reconciliation. He’s an adjunct research fellow and associate professor in the School of Theology at Charles Sturt University. In 2024, he received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to theological education. Based in Sydney, Australia, he’s written more than 45 books, including:

I have been reading Matthew books because we are in Year A of the church calendar (Matthew's year) but taking a break from Matthew for much of Lent, I picked this up for my personal reading.

What is good about this book is that Graham Hill reads Matthew attentively to what Jesus teaches us about Jesus, and the love of God, God's Kingdom, and mission. particularly in the early daily entries, Hill provides the incisive "big idea" of a passage, asks poignant reflection questions, and a daily prayer for each entry. Some parts of this have bigger swaths of Matthew as a daily reading (up to a whole chapter) and sometimes that means Hill flattens out the text to make a point, where Matthew is asking us to wrestle with difficulty and sit in discomfort .

Despite this, I'd recommend it. I read it in 30 days instead of 50 because in Lent I wanted to make sure I got to the passion by the 6th Sunday of Lent so adjusted my schedule, so if you are a Graham Hill devotional superfan, disregard my critique because I did it wrong.
