Its the summer of 1979. Ten-year-old, Bobby Harlan, cannot escape school bullies and doesn't have the words to stand up to his abusive father, but older brother Danny will do anything to make him happy, even if it means bringing Bobby's wheelchair as they head out fishing. The chair has a history, and whether others believe inanimate objects can hold onto past horrors, Danny knows what has kept him up at night.
I was born in Cleveland Ohio, moved away twice, but the city reeled me back in. The best days for me are the lazy one's spent roughhousing with my little girls at home.
Writing came almost as a surprise in my adulthood-I was under the impression only writers can become writers, or something like that.
I grew up on the same big mystery/horror/thriller authors all of us read in the nineties . . . Dean Koontz, John Saul, Stephen King, Straub. Their writing is magic and while I strive for no less in my own, I realize it takes years and years. But let the journey begin!
Ten year old Bobby sits in a wheel chair and is drooling on himself. He is constantly bullied by teenage boys. His brother Danny will do whatever he can to protect and take care of Bobby. Their father is a drunk and there is never enough food. Danny decides to take bobby to Grady Pond to fish. Its a nice day and they have escapes father. The weather is wonderful. Nothing can go wrong. There is just one small factor, Danny is afraid of Bobby's wheelchair. And the bullies have decided to have some fun with Danny and Bobby. A chilling tell. despite their circumstances the boys go out to have an adventure and it turn dark very quickly for them. Zavoda brings the reader in real close and then hits them with a taste of terror. I plan to read more from the author to see what horrors he can pull out of his vivid imagination.
Siblings Bobby and Danny love each other. Danny dreams of being able to play ball with Bobby, to run and race each other outdoors and to just hang out and talk. However, this will never happen as Bobby is severely handicapped. The best that Danny is able to do is to place Bobby and his wheelchair and take him outdoors on occasion. This is not exactly the story of Bobby and Danny but instead about bullies, bullying, and a evil wheelchair. Scott Zavada writes the short story in a format that would make Stephen King quite proud.
This was an okay short story that I enjoyed. The suspense dragged me along, and kept me on the edge of my seat. The story was interesting and different, though it's more of a suspense story rather than a horror story, though there was still horror in it. The story built up to a good ending, and I enjoyed the ending, though it was a bit gory and overly detailed for me. All in all though, this was a good short read that I would recommend.
I find it awe inspiring when a child can overcome a disability for just an instant and feel like a normal kid even when he or she has to go back being that disabled kid. Bobby is that kid and his brother gives him those moments to remember
wish it could have been longer was a great short story. Wish it had been a full length book the writing and story was so interesting could have stayed in it for hours or days
a heart searching story but truth about it is there is so much of this bullying going on in life today with all of the kids there is always people out there just can't keep from bullying always some kids think that they are so much better than they really are
What a wonderfully original certfiably shudder worthy story!! I felt the bond being portrayed between the brothers perfectly. I too have a younger brother with disabilities. I think it can make us more patient and caring individuals. Great story, Scott. Can't wait to check out more of your work.
