After Laney is shot at point blank range, Josh works tirelessly to repair her life threatening internal injuries from the gunshot wounds. What’s worse is he is forced to inform Laney’s parents about the tragic accident. Having only just begun a relationship with the woman he knows in his heart he will spend the rest of his life with, he now has to reveal to her parents that a stalker has been tormenting their daughter. While his only mission is to save Laney’s life, her parents have other plans for their daughter, none of which include Josh. They are determined to find a new doctor for Laney, and if her parents have their way, she will be taken thousands of miles away from him. Just when Josh thinks his entire world has been turned completely upside down, he finds his sister Jillian has stopped taking her psychiatric medications and has become a person unfamiliar to him. Dealing with her psychotic world becomes even more of a shock, leaving Josh in a horrible dilemma. He is torn between trying to save Laney’s life, keeping her parents from moving her away from him, and providing his sister the attention and help she desperately needs before she has a complete psychotic breakdown. Will Josh be able to save the love of his life and prevent her parents from taking her away? Will he be able to help Jillian through her mental illness before it takes over her life? Will Laney’s relationship with her parents ever be salvaged? Will Josh and Laney have their happily ever after, or will the hurdles they have to jump through prove to be more than they can handle?
I was born and raised in Southern California. I received my Master's Degree from California State University, Dominguez Hills. I have worked in nursing for over fifteen years. I have worked in multiple areas of nursing. However, my passion is for emergency medicine. Oh the stories I can tell.
My passion wasn't always nursing. When I started college, I wanted to be a writer. However, I had a teacher that made me less then happy about writing and I chose to go into nursing. Since then, I have always had stories in my head that I wanted to put on paper but never found the time.
I married my wonderful husband whom I met while working in the intensive care unit. We have three active and amazing boys that consistently keep me on my toes. We spend a lot of time watching the boys baseball games, snowboarding in Mammoth, and watching the oldest son play high school football. I happen to be the photographer for his team and I spend a lot of time on the field!
So with all of the activities in my life, where do I find the time to write? Needless to say, I am an insomniac. When I am not up in the middle of the night reading, I get up about five in the morning and start writing. Most days, this gives me an hour and a half to write as much as I can. During the summer months, I am blessed with a lighter schedule and more time to put my thoughts to paper.
I started writing a Shot in the Dark in March of 2012. I was sitting in an airport waiting standby for a plane back to San Diego. I had time to kill. Before I knew it, I had four chapters written. Due to my busy schedule supervising an emergency department, I never found the time to continue my story.
In November of 2012, I resigned from my position and decided to stay home with my children. This afforded me time to finish "A Shot in the Dark" and find a publisher. I was lucky enough to be picked up by Black Rose Writing. A Shot in the Dark will be released July 11, 2012. I am currently working on the sequel, Into the Light, and hope to have it finished by the end of the summer! I am also working on an untitled novel I hope to have completed by the end of the year.
Check out A Shot in the Dark. I hope you will enjoy it!
aha and the story continued and yes may I say it got better and better wow I loved it we found out so much more about the characters and it didn't disappoint laney was so much easier to understand and made me love her that much more with everything that she's been through everything just clicked into place, then there was the gorgeous Josh and learning more about him and his past and everything that went on with him I could easily fall at his feet. as the story progressed it pulled you in even more and I got hooked nothing was left unturned and all my questions was answered except for Payton would of loved to hear from her but with the turns the story took I didn't need to thus was laney and josh's love story and I loved it. well done Jennifer fantastic story xxx
I really enjoyed Into The Li ght. Burrows really captured strong and memorable characters. Laney has endured many things in her life. Raped and abused at 15, it took many years for Laney to put her life back together and mend her wounds. If things couldn't get any worse Laney is at work one night and is shot and put in intensive care. I really fell in love with Josh who is love with Laney. Josh was a strong character that was dealing with many things in his own life, but never stopped loving Laney. I really enjoyed this book and I wish I could have read the first book to this series. I was given this book in return for an honest review. there was a few errors, but it didn't detour me from being sucked into the book. Go out and get your copy now, you won't be disappointed.
I like the story and how it started quickly and had a male hero and was told from his point of view. The heroin was incapacitated early on and we hear her thoughts but not actually hear her voice until the last quarter of the book. There were some editing issues, some missing words, wrong words and the book seemed a bit rushed about 60% of the way through. I felt some feelings of 'how can Josh not know who is to blame and how could Lanie's mom be such an idiot' but the story settled nicely afterwards. I was glad to have had the chance to read this new author, and I will go on to read A Shot in the Dark.
Laney has been shot and Josh has to find a way to distance himself so he can help save her life. While Laney is in ICU Josh has to phone her parents.Laneys mom is in shock not only about the shooting but also about her daughter and Josh. Laneys mom wants to move her daughter to a new hospital over a thousand miles away from Josh so she can take over her life. The threatening letters continue to show up and they are getting more personal. Josh has to keep Laneys parents on side while dealing with his sister's mental health. This book juggles the two storylines going throughout. A couple of shocks and a few laughs. Read this book
This book literally picked up right where "A shot in the dark" ended. Lainey is fighting for her life and Josh is struggling as her boyfriend and a professional as to what is the best decisions for her care. Mean while everyone is learning that the crazy ex that shot Lainey in the hospital is not the stalker who has been harassing her about her relationship with Josh. This book took some crazy turns that I never saw coming. It is a very emotional read with lots of intense moments. I highly recommend this series to anyone who is looking for a fast paced suspense romance novel!
PHEW!!! after reading A shot in the dark i definitely needed to figure out what happened! Finally everything became clear! I wont spoil the story, because what fun would it be if i did! All i have to say is that i absolutely relate to Laneys relationship with her parents (mainly her mother)! IF i didn't already love Josh well i absolutely do now! What an emotional roller coaster though be prepared!
I really enjoyed this suspense romance. I was a little lost at the beginning of the story and not completely sure what was happening. As the story progressed somethings became more understandable. This story is intense and there are some parts that are difficult to read. I would not consider this light reading but it was gripping and very interesting. I recommend it if your looking for a fast-paced gripping suspense with romance.
Josh & Laney's story continues right where the lash story ended. Laney had been shot and Josh had to learn to move past who he was working on to save her life. The characters come to life and we are given so much more information about their lives that we feel like we are peeking in on them. This story has a life of its own and its adrenaline will keep your heart pumping along with Laney's.
Into the Light by Jennifer Burrows is the second book in the Dark Series. I highly recommend reading A Shot in the Dark before reading Into the Light so you will know what is going on at the beginning of the story.
At fifteen, Laney was raped and abused by her boyfriend, Scott, and it has taken years for the emotional wounds to heal. While on duty one night in the emergency department of the hospital where Laney works as a nurse, she is shot multiple times by Scott. Heavily sedated and in ICU so that the gunshot wound to her heart and other gunshot wounds can heal, her overprotected parents want to take her home so that she can be close to them while she heals…….two thousand miles away.
Josh Stone, a surgeon, is totally in love with Laney. When they are together, it feels as though the planets have aligned and everything is right in the world. Although he had functioned just fine before he met Laney, he cannot imagine life being the same without her. Josh does not want Laney to be taken away by her parents and he is going to do everything within his powers to prevent that from happening.
Before the shooting incident, Laney had been receiving some threatening letters at her home. Everyone thought that once her ex-boyfriend, Scott, was behind bars for the shooting, the letters would stop. They were wrong.
The story line was intriguing and kept me engrossed the entire time. The characters are well developed and realistic. I was glad that even though this was a medical romantic suspense novel, the author did not overuse medical terms that an average person would not know; there was just the right balance in order to convey what was actually going on with Laney’s health situation.
It would have helped if there had been a prologue with a recap from the previous book. This was my first book from this author and I was confused at first on what was going on at the beginning of the story.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book. Even though less than half way through I had a general idea on whom the stalker was, I truly enjoyed taking the journey along with the characters as they tried to unravel the mystery.
*I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
It's been over 6 months since I read "A Shot in the Dark," Jennifer Burrows' first book in The Dark Series, and I'm glad I finally got to read this extraordinarily satisfying sequel. Once again, just like in "A Shot in the Dark," the author captivates your attention within the first few sentences. Within moments, you'll be immediately thrust into the fast-paced lives of Laney and Josh, as well as get to know, and possibly loathe, new characters.
Just like the first book of the series, this novel is told from multiple view points. Unlike the first book, though, Laney does much less of the narrating which gives the reader an opportunity to get to know Josh on a more personal level. One interesting contrast between "A Shot in the Dark" (told mostly from Laney's perspective) and "Into the Light" (told mostly from Josh's perspective) is the much darker and more serious tone throughout the story. This almost sobering tone convinces the reader that Josh is a much more complex character than you likely originally thought while reading "A Shot in the Dark" where Josh was portrayed as almost inhumanly and nauseatingly "the perfect guy." The author provides more depth to Josh's character by introducing the reader to a distressing new character, Jillian, Josh's schizophrenic sister. By allowing the reader to see this challenging and sometimes scary part of Josh's life, suddenly he's no longer just the "handsome, perfect, successful surgeon who drives a porsche," but now an actual person who faces adversities in life and family drama.
Certainly, Laney faces her own family drama in this sequel as well; you will get intimately acquainted, perhaps reluctantly so, with Laney's mother. She will likely make you grit your teeth on more than one occasion.
This book is the perfect sequel to "A Shot in the Dark." The plot thickens, the characters are developed more fully, and you'll finish with a satisfying "Aaahhhh." I guarantee you won't be able to put the book down once you start reading.
YES!!! I finally was able to fall in love with Josh and Laney!! I will be honest and say that I could not connect with them in A Shot in the Dark, the plot was great but I didn’t get enough emotion to be able to connect. But, I am SOOOOO happy I continued on with this series. Into the Light is so much better!!
“You need to help her. She needs you now more than ever.”
We are left with tragedy at the end of A Shot in the Dark and I quickly picked up Into the Light so I could know how it works out. But!!! It is not an immediate relief. The author makes you wait. LOL!! She takes you through many emotions and SO MUCH drama. I was not expecting all the action that happened in this book. I just wanted my HEA for Josh and Laney! But it was all well worth it. And I actually figured out the mystery early on in the story and was happy to see that I was right. Maybe I will be a detective in my next life ;) HaHa!!
“I know enough about her to know there’s nothing you can say that will make me stop loving her. She’s the woman I’m meant to be with.”
In the first book, I felt like Josh was too aggressive and I didn’t get his immediate attraction. But in Into the Light, I felt it!! I understood what he was feeling and I could definitely connect this time. And Laney, I missed her a little in this story but loved how she reacted in the end. The girl has a heart of gold and is so sweet and understanding.
A lot happens in this book, so be ready!! Feelings are hurt, mysteries are solved, and love happens. And I know I didn’t think very highly of A Shot in the Dark, but it is a must read for you to truly understand and enjoy Into the Light as much as I did :)
I'm being generous with two stars. If I hadn't been asked to review this, it would have probably been a DNF.
Josh is a trauma surgeon in ER and Laney is a nurse that works with him closely. They are in love but only Laney's best friend knows about the relationship. In the first pages of the book, Laney is shot four times while working on a patient in the ER with Josh. She spends most all of the book unconscious or medically sedated. She can hear what's being said around her and the author relates what she is thinking as the conversations are going on around her. She had a traumatic episode in her past. When Laney's parents arrive at the hospital, we discover her mother is a control freak to the point of wanting to move her back home -2000 miles away- and doesn't want to wait until she is stable to do it. She's not likable AT ALL.
Josh's sister lives with him and is schizophrenic. She is off her medication and off the rails. Their relationship creeped me out from the beginning.
I read that the author is an ICU nurse. Almost all of this story takes place in ICU. It's obvious that the author really knows her stuff but the story became bogged down with all of the medical detail - medications, treatments, dosages. I'm sure someone in the medical field would find that adds to the story, but for the casual non medical reader like me, it was painful to get thru.
Well, as you know, I hate grammatical errors! However, even though I noticed them (under 10) they didn't bother me. I was so wrapped up in the storyline that I mentally corrected it and moved on. I never thought I would find a series that would make me not get upset with grammar issues but I found it and I am glad I did. Jennifer throws many twists and turns in this book and, even though I hold a degree in psychology and most things do not shock me, Jennifer found a way to do it! I found myself screaming, "OMG! She did NOT just do that?!" Oh and Laney's mom is an ubber witch! I found myself yelling, "Would someone just slap her already and get it over with?" Honestly, a book worth the cost.
Jennifer: You have found your calling. I expect to see more books from you. Don't give up. I can see you in the limelights of NYC one day. Keep up the good work!
The first book, "A Shot in the Dark" left us with the mother of all cliffhangers so I was ecstatic that "Into the Light" started exactly where that one left off!! There are some incredible twists and turns to Josh and Laney's continuing story and one whopper of a shocking revelation that left me with my jaw dropped and thinking about how I never saw that coming...... We meet Laneys Father and very over bearing Mother who really puts Josh through some changes when she tries to sweep Laney far away him before Laney can be woken from the drug induced coma and object. ....and along with the stress of this he has to deal with some issues from his sister......to top it all off, the notes haven't stopped! So if it's not the ex boyfriend, who can it be? I so enjoyed this story and absolutely recommend it!!! I do believe I've found another favorite Author!
This is a continuation of A Shot in the Dark & picks up right where book one left off. I love the relationship between Josh & Laney. However, her mom is quite rude & I hated how she treated Josh (and Laney). This book is full of surprises & will shock you from beginning to end. Great job Jennifer with your first series...can't wait to see what else you write (I'm hoping for more Laney & Josh *wink, wink*)
I couldn't wait to start reading Into the Light after being left hanging on a cliffhanger from A shot in the dark and I definitely needed to know what happened and why? Whoa sit back and get ready for some bombshells and you will be shocked from the start to end. I love the relationship between Josh and Laney. Laney's mother drove me insane in the way she treated everyone especially Josh and Laney. Awesome job Jennifer and I loved the series.
