Lilith: an apocrypha
A centuries old legend, Lilith is relevant now more than ever. Refinery29 recently posted an article entitled “Who Is Lilith & Why Is She Suddenly in Every Teen Show?” Hailed as a feminist icon by Sarah Mclaughlin’s Lilith Fair, the opposite is true in the TV shows True Blood, Supernatural, and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, (among a dozen others), which continue to demonize the first woman, Lilith.
Before Eve, God created Lilith. She was banished from the Garden of Eden for her disobedience and afterwards successfully brought about the fall of man from grace with the help of a fallen angel. Centuries later she became the Queen of Sheba, turning King Solomon away from God and saw that their son secreted the Ark of the Covenant away from Jerusalem to Ethiopia. Ultimately, Lilith became God’s consort.
The story of Lilith is remarkably similar to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Lilith is hurt when god abandons her and knows nothing else in her quest for acceptance and love but to lash out against her creator through those important to him.
This rage Lilith acts upon vilifies her in myth as a strangler of babies and thief of men’s vitality. However, LILITH accomplishes a rare placing her in a sympathetic light and posing the logical conclusion that since Lilith never ate from the Tree of Knowledge, she does not know good from evil.
This is the first complete account about the life of Lilith throughout biblical times, making it more a gospel, apocrypha, myth or legend, than a novel. More Sword in the Stone than The Mists of Avalon.
LILITH is based on the writings contained in the Talmud, Kabbala, Midrash, Bible, Kebra Negast, Zohar, The Alphabet of Ben Sira; the research of Siegmund Hurwitz, Dr. Barbara Black Koltuv, Raphael Patai, and Howard Schwartz; as well as Lilith’s appearances in folklore, myth and legend.
