Colden Frias wants to be left alone. His job as a recruiter for SPAM in a town that has more people with superhuman powers per capita than any other city in the United States should keep him busy. Thankfully, the people of Eternity happily leave him alone unless they want a book recommendation or his banana bread recipe (not that he’ll ever give up the recipe) giving him plenty of time to read romance novels and keep his aunt from inadvertently burning down his house. However, when his best friend begs Colden to help his baby brother, Colden can’t say no, and his quiet life dissolves into a puddle of chaos.

Happy the project his nine-year-old self dreamed of is coming to fruition, PhD student Neo Price wants to share his “VirtUal” technology with the world. No one should be lonely, and if the virtual persona of a loved one also eases the grief of losing them, all the better. But when outside entities want to pirate Neo’s technology for nefarious reasons, he’ll do everything he can to keep it secure. Even if it means pairing with his brother’s best friend, the man who crushed his heart five years ago.

Caught in a world of subterfuge, seizure, and superheroes—well, not quite super—Neo finds his infatuation with Colden growing with every minute they spend together. Colden will stop at nothing to protect Neo, even if it means denying his feelings for the most radiant man he knows. With the help of a motley crew of reluctant warriors, can Colden and Neo find their own love story while saving the world? Okay, maybe not the world, but at least their little part of it!

Entertaining but Frustrating

This was a novella length (2.5 hours) story set in the Subparheroes universe. It was cute but somewhat aggravating at the same time. Colden ran so hot and cold with Neo that he was hard to like. For being super smart, Neo was kind of clueless as well. It took him far too long to make the connection between Paris Ridge and Rylan Ridge amongst other things. Additionally, the character Howard seemed to become Harold by the end of the book which threw me off a bit. The following two quotes sum up my frustrations with Colden and his inability to make a commitment to a relationship with Neo and just talk to Dack about it:

“So after four days of acting like this is something.” The hand not holding me in place lashes between us like a whip. “Acting like I mean more to you than a plaything to pass the time while we’re holed up. You don’t think it’s a good idea?” Fury radiates off him like it’s a living, breathing being.

“For the love of god, Colden, the man likes you as much as you like him.” My aunt lets out an aggravated sigh. “I thought you would have grown out of your insecurities by now. Don’t let them rule your life.”

Fun and quirky story

This was an interesting story. Colden's subpar power seems kinda silly: making ice cubes with his hands. But when it really matters he was able to embrace his ability and helped save the day. Neo created an incredible program allowing grieving people to visit with a virtual version of a loved one. Colden and Neo have known each other since childhood but grew apart the last few years after a drunken encounter. But neither can deny the attraction to each other. When every villain in the area wants Neo and his program so they could be the best villains in the city, Colden volunteers to watch over him until things settle down. This was a quirky story with plenty of heat, action, and a cast of fun characters.

Colder and Neo were adorable! Colder works fit SPAM in a recruiting center and Neo is his best friends brother, who he has held a torch for years. An abduction, rescue, abduction, rescue and lots of powers and help get these two together for good. Great story, lots of fun and action. Highly Recommended

3.5 stars rounded down

I enjoyed the characters, the story line was a little silly, but that’s par for the course in this series. There were some editing errors (misspelled or wrong names) it’s not my favourite of the series, but it’s far from the worst.

Colden & Neo

Good story, great characters all around. Colden’s merry band of misfits save the day when Neo’s research is in danger of being stolen. Colden and Neo finally get out of their own way and admit their attraction.

This was not the worst thing I've read. Unfortunately, there were just too many flaws for me to handle.

DNF @ 18. I’m finding this second series of books not as good as the first… This one is another “miss”— and needs a content warning for non-consensual drugging of one of the MCs…

DNF'd. It was almost ok, but had a lot of mistaken vocabulary words and the power was just too weird for me.
