With no prospects in life, Rothe doesn't think twice about accepting the unexpected offer to join the Jackals of the Waste.
But it could hardly come at a worse time.
In Deep Cut, unrest among young laborless dwarves grows even as human armies mass on the border. Far to the east, the ürsi besiege Glint. As the dwarven folk suffer, the Council cloaks itself in secrets, including the hidden existence of Black Fire. When war erupts, Rothe finds himself on a mission of assassination that might deliver both the Red Ridges and the Waste from destruction at the hands—and claws—of dwarven foes.
This is a tandem story with The Mine Lord (recommended for reading at or after the chapter Jackal of the Waste) and follows the journey of Rothe Stonefoot until right before he meets Chargrim of Glint.
From the struggles of a dwarven prospector to the adventures of a diminutive squirrel-rider, A. Trae McMaken's decades-long passion for writing fantasy literature has led him into many worlds and introduced many characters. He lives and works near the shores of Lake Huron, watching as his flock of sheep munch grass. He has had a varied career as a traveling storyteller and folklorist, a fiddler and singer, but these days he much prefers to stay put and write.
This is the companion novel of A Trae Mcmaken's book titled The Mine Lord. This was my first ever tandem read, and at first, I honestly thought I was going to be overwhelmed, but, like the rest of his books, it flows smoothly, and is easy to follow. It is recommended to start this book at Chapter 74 titled "The Jackal of the Waste" to get a more indepth background history on Rothe, our main character in this book. Like the rest of his works, I have truly enjoyed being submerged into this world.
The Jackal of the Waste is a compendium to the Ice Cloak series - which is awesome in comprehensive story telling.
It focuses on one of the minor characters introduced in the Mine Lord and his journey close to the point he is introduced in the main novel.
The series is fantastic overall. This story is a bit different from the main novels and is still excellently written, I just didn't become as absorbed as I had with the main series. It might be because of it's length where there wasn't the room to elaborate.
I still recommend the series, but this is one that is optional.
Not a bad book. Fills in some of the story from the Mine Lord. We are introduced to the Jackals in the Mine Lord but don't get a lot of exposure to them. This story, while giving us some details, does not give enough.
Interestingly, the dwarves do not seem to learn from their mistakes as greed takes over colony after colony.
Just finished book 6. There is no concrete ending? Stone foot is in route to his destination and the minors are still out in the wild??? Where is the ending?
A great little story and snippet into another part of the dwarven culture of this world. Sentiment, is it a hindrance or a strength? Perspective is everything and when sentiment will get you killed, it must be put aside. When the Jackals don their masks, they are about the business of killing and protecting the Wastes from humans more than anything else. Soon a new member is thrust into a situation that he is completely unprepared for but which may just help him find his purpose in life… if he lives long enough that is as the ursi are everywhere…
