When you're a priest, down is the wrong direction.
Former Marine Connor Black, now Father Black, wants to reclaim his freedom, but the mysterious Honos Group has another mission for him.
They know his secret, a decade old mistake that, if released, will drag America into another war.
This time, he must head underground to destroy a tunnel that runs beneath the US border, from San Diego to Tijuana.
But when he meets a fellow Marine using the same tunnel to take home the daughter of a ruthless cartel leader, the stakes go from dangerous to explosive.
Even with the help of old and new friends, he might not get out of this alive and, as much as Black wants to meet God, he's not ready just yet.
Going Dark is the second book in the Father Black series, an action thriller that features heroes, heroines, and a priest on a mission.
The second book in the Father Black series is as good as the first. Happily, Emmy and Lyndsey have returned along with a few more interesting characters. Father Black had hoped his commitment to Honos had been fulfilled, but they’ve made it clear, it will be fulfilled when they say it’s fulfilled. As he and Emmy work on his latest assignment, his growing team at home scramble to uncover who Honos is and how to take them down.
I love how Williams develops his characters. Even the most despicable have a human side. They love their families and some have children waiting for them to come home. This is what Father Black has to reconcile in his heart, and with God, as he completes his mission. Williams is an amazing writer and I can’t wait for the third installment.
The author has provided a copy to me after seeing I enjoyed the first book in his series, MISSION BLACK.
If you have (hopefully) read MB already you'll be as happy as I was that GOING DARK picks up where MB left off, taking Father Connor Black from his overzealously successful mission against East Coast drug kingpins (he was only supposed to take out one but got a little carried away) to the possibly even more dangerous cartel version found South of the US border.
We've been reading about smuggling tunnels beneath the US-Mexican border for decades now. Find one, they dig another. This doesn't keep the mysterious Honos group blackmailing our veteran Father Black from demanding he destroy one in particular, very near the heaviest legal border crossing to Tijuana. As always, their motives unknown. Just do the job - which should have earned Black an out the first time around - but then there'd be no series, so MB fans have Honos group to thank for keeping Black under their thumbbat least a while longer.
In GOING DARK, Fr. Black is again joined by stunningly outfitted fellow blackmailee Emmy, providing access to the arms necessary to their new task, as well as Lyndsey, his right hand at the church they run, with her own military past supporting his efforts and spearheading a look into Honos group with her hacking skills. And if you were wondering as I was just who the Honos operative keeping close tabs on the Father for them is - another blackmail victim or a bigger fish - this latest entry may answer that question but at least gives us a name, Jonas Holman, to remember him by.
The crux of any good read for me, regardless of genre, is characterization. Williams can plot with the best of them, arm his good guys and bad with impeccable accuracy, and most importantly make you care about them all, whether you love them, hate them, or something in between. And GOING DARK introduces several new characters - a doting father of a drug lord, Amando Garcia, his daughter Camila, ignorant of his cartel leader identity, Camila's female bodyguard Danielle Carlisle,a three tour veteran of Afghanistan, and an alcoholic Tijuana police officer, Santiago Ramos, who has the biggest and most dangerous smuggler in town in his sights, hindered less by drink than you'd imagine. All well-drawn and interesting characters who complicate or assist Fr. Black's latest explosive mission.
If, like me, this sort of stuff keeps you up reading at night, join me in moving on to the next book in the series, TAKE DOWN, which I'll be picking up soon!
The second in the series. I loved it, all action, exciting, violent and never a dull moment. Father Connor Black is fearless and has people he can count on to help him out. I can't wait for the next.
You've done it again Mick. I am so glad that Julie Cox introduced your books to me. I love anticipating what is going to happen next. This is one of my favorite series. I'm glad Father Black will be back. Sherry Traver
I throughly enjoyed this 2nd book in The Father Black series. The list of main characters grew a bit from book 1, and I liked almost all of them. The plot is action packed and has plenty of surprises. I’m looking forward to book 3, enjoy!
Going Dark, #2 - This story picks up a week after Mission Black ends. It is steady nonstop action, with intense story lines and great characters. Interesting, intriguing, immersing entertainment that makes you frown when the last page is read, you want more. Source: The author. 5*
Mission Black, #1 - Absolutely one of the best books I have read recently in any genre. I was completely mesmerized by the intriguing, intense story lines, the three, actually, four awesome characters if you consider the "Organization" a character, and the continuous pace.
Of course, vigilantism is a favorite theme for me, and having a Catholic priest as a reluctant vigilante makes an interesting formula. Added to the mix, plenty of good humor and two female characters worth their weight in gold. The other characters were a good variety of types. Of course, the darkness of Black's dilemma weighs on him and he works with God to solve his troubles.
Only thing I did not like was the lowercased "bible" when The Bible was mentioned while uppercasing god/gods that were not The Good Lord. For you nonbelievers, The Bible is still a title.
There was a bit of British English here and there that brought out a giggle or two. Minimal cursing. If you have read The Old Farts Club by Mr. Williams, or any of his other books in other genres, or David Putnam's Bruno Johnson series, you will definitely enjoy this new series by Mr. Williams. 5*
Take Down, #3 - Each book gets better and this one ends with the possibility of another book to this trilogy. Picking up where Going Dark ends, the well written, entertaining story lines filled with action, humor and surprises make it hard to put the book down. The characters and the constant pace add to this intriguing closure. Source: The Author. 15*
