An original series created by bestselling authors Susan May Warren and Lisa Phillips.

He’s the last person she wants to see…

Allie Monroe is desperate for a fresh start. Grieving the loss of her first SAR dog, she’s gone to Montana to train her new K9, Scout. And when two boys go missing during a wildfire, she’s brought on board to find them.

But the one person tasked to help her is the last person she wants to see—arrogant and dangerous Dakota Masterson.

However, with the flames closing in, finding the boys might mean confronting the painful memories of their short-lived relationship. Then, Allie’s dog goes missing, suddenly someone is shooting at them, and they find themselves in a race against a wildfire and a threat that wants them dead. More, when Allie goes missing, Dakota’s past—and his issues—come roaring back.

It’ll take the SWAT officer in him to save the day, but will it cost them a future they both long for?

Get ready to be swept away in a world where survival, redemption, and second chances collide in book three of the Chasing Fire: Montana series.

Michelle Sass Aleckson has done it again! The story of Dakota and Allie is brimming with suspense as they chase down the bad guy and battle wildfire, romantic tension as they help each other climb out of regret and mistakes, and tenderness and sense of justice as they take care of two lost and scared boys. There is a good amount of faith and trust in the story as well. I loved connecting with Emily and Houston from the previous books. Dakota was a worthy hero - loyal with a firm sense of justice and a compassionate and teachable heart even though his hot temper got him into trouble often. Allie's soft and tender spirit was balanced by her fierce loyalty and dedication to do what is right. I loved her K-9 search and rescue hero Scout and I hope to see more of him in future books.
The series is getting more intense as a subplot of nefarious dealings around the town of Ember, Montana takes shape to tie the series together. I can't wait for the next book to see where the Jude County Hotshots will take us.

Flashback was filled with fire, chemistry and suspense.

This is one of those books where you want to lock yourself away to only spend time reading.

Each book in this series has its own plot which runs to completion, but there is also a mystery which builds in each book with the plot continuing throughout the series, so due to that, I will recommend reading this series in order.

Dakota was a great hero, but due to past mistakes, still had to learn who he was and what he is worth. Allie had her own fears and mistakes which kept her back from fully opening in her relationships. I enjoyed seeing how these characters grew and received self-forgiveness in this story.

I am so excited for book four!

Get ready for a roller coaster ride of adventure and emotions in this action packed thriller! Hotshot rookie Dakota and SAR agent Allie find themselves thrown together again as they race against a forest fire to find two missing young boys. Danger lurks around every corner and plunges them into even more dangerous situations than they imagined.

This story deals with several difficult subjects in a very elongated way. It brings forth all the emotions as you journey with the characters through their pasts and presents.

This series is so good! I think with every book that it is my new favorite of the series only until I read the next one. It is definitely a must read.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book by the publisher. All opinions expressed are completely my own.

Word of warning: Clear your weekend, folks. Because once you crack this book, you won’t be able to put it down! From the word go, this story literally drops you in the middle of a firestorm, and the blaze doesn’t let up!!! Please secure your safety harness!

Parallel to the adventure, to the heart-pounding action, is a beautiful story of redemption, love, and second chances. And did I mention there’s an adorable pup?

This story has it all: flawed characters, honest emotion, and undeniable chemistry. Dakota and Allie are just magic. Plus, there are some wonderful side characters that I really hope we’ll get to see again (anybody else out there rooting for Kane and Sanchez? Can they get their own story, please?)

Here are a few Notable Quotables:

- “He could wait her out all day if needed. Because with all the ways she’d supported him, cared for him, he wanted to do the same. To be a safe place for her to fall apart. To hold her together when that happened.”
- “Maybe you’re so busy trying to prove something that you’ve forgotten who your heavenly Father is. He fought for you. Chose you. And all your sin, not just some of it, has been paid for and taken away. Instead of trying so hard to pay back the grace you’ve been given, why don’t you simply receive it for the gift it is?”
- “Allie, I want you to listen to me carefully. We don’t always have answers for the way or why things happen. But know this: God’s forgiveness is complete. He’s not punishing you. Remember that hymn? ‘My sin, not in part but the whole, is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more.’”

There are some wonderful life lessons in this book, and some amazing truths to discover. So…please don’t waste another minute, board this roller coaster of a ride called Chasing Fire, because this third installment brings all the right heat! And don’t forget: there’s a lot more to come - I have a feeling it’s gonna be one exciting summer!

This was another exciting addition to the series. I was invested from the very beginning and did not want to put it down. The intensity and danger kept rising until the thrilling conclusion.

I liked Allie and Dakota. They both had some struggles and had made some mistakes in their respective pasts, but they were trying their best to overcome them.

I loved Scout, Allie’s new SAR dog. He was smart and so impressive with his skills. I could understand Allie’s reluctance to connect with another dog after the loss of her previous beloved canine, but I knew they’d make a great team if they could learn to trust each other.

This was the first book I’ve read by this author, and it certainly won’t be the last. I enjoyed it a great deal. This is the third book in the series, but I think it can be read as a standalone perfectly fine. The series has an overarching mystery, but it’s easy to jump right into.

I liked everything about this story and this couple, but especially Dakota’s triumph over addiction. I did feel like some things were brushed over, could have gone deeper, but the focus of the story was on their romance and it was to sigh for.

Loved this book! The adventure grabbed me immediately and I absolutely needed to know what happened, lol. Also, I love that Allie and Dakota were shown dealing with their flaws, that they’re not perfect—for some reason, that really resonated with me while I was reading. Would definitely recommend, and I’m looking forward to the next in the series!

You would wonder what a pastor's daughter and a former addict and victim of abuse would have in common. There is one key thing that makes them more alike than even they realize. They are both holding onto their painful pasts, a past they are ashamed of.

Allie Monroe needs a redo for her life. She is trying to train her her K9 Scout, and is having a hard time bonding with him. When she is told she will have to evacuate because of the fire, she refuses to leave because two young boys are missing. This is a chance for Scout to show what he can do, and she can possibly redeem herself. She is shocked to see Dakota Masterson with the hotshots. When she is told that Dakota will have to go with her as she searches, she is not happy with this arrangement.

Dakota Masterson is a former SWAT member who is now a Jude County hotshot. He is battling insecurities from a painful past. Allie knows Dakota and knows about his past. These two characters can help each other heal, but they have to learn to forgive and forget. Dakota is a wounded hero in the truest sense of the word.

This book was filled with high octane thrills and danger everywhere. Some dangers were human and others were from a fire breathing dragon in the forest threatening to consume everything in its path. There is a mystery embedded in this story as well. This story of what is going on in Ember County is continuing to build.

Dakota and Allie were flawed, and having their flaws on display made them more real as characters. They were not living a fairy tale life of no problems. Everyone deserves a second chance, and both characters needed to give themselves a second chance and realize forgiveness is attainable, you just have to ask.

This was a powerfully emotional story of redemption and second chances built around a fantastic mystery. Faith is a huge component in this story as well. I have to admit I shed a few tears. Get comfy before you start reading this book because this is a one sitting read.

Thank you to Sunrise Publishing for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Flashback by Michelle Sass Aleckson captures the imagination and allows readers to empathize and grow with Allie and Dakota. Allie and Dakota both have some heavy issues in their past that make trusting others or even viewing themselves as good enough for anyone a hard situation to maneuver around. The plot centers around an abused wife and her two children. While the story tugged at my heart because I know someone that was in the same situation, I wanted to see a resolution near the end of the story for this family. A nice reunion where they thank Allie and Dakota for keeping the kids safe and giving the mother, Jen, a true feeling of freedom. I also enjoyed the hunt for the dog, Scout, and the relationship between Allie and her new dog. At first, it appeared, they were not going to click, but I think it will work out. Dogs attach really easily to humans who are loving and caring. As for the plot, it moved with action and a dead body with a killer still on the loose. It was roughly thrown into the story. Yes, the story does keep coming back to the dead body, but at times, the budding relationship between Allie and Dakota took over majority of the story’s focus. Would I read this book again? Probably. If I decide to read all six when they are finished to see the little Easter eggs that are in the previous novels, which there are some, to see how they play out in the end of the series. If anyone has enjoyed the previous two books, I believe that they will enjoy this book too.

Flashback is the third installment of the exciting Chasing Fire: Montana series created by bestselling authors Susan May Warren and Lisa Phillips. Although it works perfectly well as a standalone, the novel also has a continuing storyline that benefits from having read the previous books in the series.
A dangerous wildfire is approaching and the campsite has been ordered to evacuate but two young boys are missing. Allie Monroe refuses to leave until the boys are found and hopes that her search and rescue dog will help her find them. Unfortunately, because she is still mourning the death of her previous SAR dog, Allie has not bonded with her current dog. To make it even more difficult, Dakota Masterson has joined her search and because Allie is aware of his past, she is not certain she can trust him.

Flashback is filled with danger and action almost from the very first page until its conclusion. The imagery is so vivid that the reader can almost hear the approaching fire and feel its heat. Other complications along the way increase the danger level and add to the suspense. Flawed characters experienced spiritual growth as they learned to forgive themselves as well as how to accept God’s forgiveness and help.

This series continues to get better and I look forward to reading it all. I hope you will also.

This book grabbed my attention right away, training an SAR dog who won't listen and spending time with your bestie while getting away from/escaping a fire? Yeah count me in! And I just attended an online event with BOTH Susan May Warren and Lisa Harris and they are just as FUN as they are TALENTED.

Okay so the bestie is only in the story briefly and the fire takes a turn for the worst and two kids end up needing rescue and then the dog who refuses to listen in emergencies kind of gets separated from the woman who is responsible for him, Scout...that ALMOST made me stop reading this because I love animals WAY too much to allow a story to hurt them even in fiction, but my instincts said to "keep reading" so I did. SPOILER: the dog DOES NOT get hurt.

It was also rough learning the two boys had witnessed a murder and had an abusive stepfather, but that only made me want to see the conclusion and justice EVEN MORE. And in Flashback, you won't be disappointed in either plot point!

For some reason, this is the only book in the series that got my attention and really enjoyed it. Both main characters are struggling with guilt from their past and have to forgive themselves. The story was sensitive to both of their issues and brings a slow romance out of it that was sweet. I think she should've been more heartbroken out of missing her dog, but she does love Scout and misses her previous dog. Glad I KEPT reading, this book blessed me :)

"Flashback" is a Christian romantic suspense. It's the 3rd in the series but can be read as a standalone. Allie lost her beloved K9 in an accident and so is only going through the motions of training her new K9, not willing to risk the deep grief of losing a dog she's bonded with. While her K9 did find missing people, Scout ran away during a fire, leaving Allie desperate to go back into the burnt area to try to find Scout.

Dakota once met Allie at a bad point in his life, and he wanted to pretend that never happened. His instinct was to avoid Allie, but she's determined to run straight into a raging wildfire to find two boys caught out on the hiking trails. He's got to keep her safe from the fire. The boys described seeing a murder out in the forest, and the body of the murdered man turned up in a burned area. Dakota and Allie poked around to investigate the mystery while fighting fires and waiting to find Allie's K9.

The main characters were likable and reacted realistically to events. The suspense was created by the danger from the fire, the boy's abusive stepfather, and the murderer. Dakota and Allie got along well when not feeling upset about their past encounter (which was her driving him someplace, knowing about his anger and other issues). There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this enjoyable suspense.

Aleckson's "Flashback" Delivers Heart, Heat, and Heroic Journeys

"Flashback" by Michelle Aleckson is a gripping and heartfelt novel. Set against the dramatic backdrop of a raging forest fire in Montana, the story pulled me immediately into a world of danger, resilience, and deep emotional connections.

Aleckson captures the raw beauty and power of the Montana wilderness. As well, the forest fire not only provides intense action and suspense but also serves as a powerful metaphor for the characters' internal struggles and healing journeys.

I loved the way the plot weaved together personal growth, second chances, and the courage to face both past wounds and present fears. The characters are relatable, flawed, and courageous, and I found myself rooting for them every step of the way.

Michelle Aleckson’s writing style is vivid and emotional, balancing action-packed scenes with quiet, tender moments that truly stay with you. "Flashback" is a story of bravery, forgiveness, and hope.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves contemporary fiction with a strong sense of place, authentic characters, and a fast-moving plot that ultimately leads to healing and redemption.

It's good that this is a fairly short book because you won't want to put it down! Allie Monroe, a minister's daughter, has never shared her past with anyone--not even her best friend. She loves God but doesn't think anyone would see past her mistakes if they knew. She can't even show love to her new search and rescue K9, Scout, after the death of her former dog. Dakota Masterson joined the Jude County Hotshots after being released from The Ridgeman Center. He doesn't want anyone to know about his addiction to pain medication, his stint in rehab or that he used to be on a SWAT team but then he meets up with Allie who drove him to rehab! Their jobs throw them together as they also attempt to rescue two young boys who are being abused and to find Allie's K-9 who has disappeared during the forest fire. The book has a wonderful ending as Allie and Dakota learn to accept God's forgiveness for their past mistakes and forgive themselves. I loved Flashback, Book 3 in the Chasing Fire: Montana series, and recommend it to anyone who wants an exciting read! I received a complimentary e-book from Sunrise Publishing. This is my honest opinion.

"Flashback" by Michelle Sass Aleckson, the third installment in the "Chasing Fire: Montana" series, is a compelling novel that weaves together themes of firefighting, historical mystery, and personal healing. The story centers on a present-day smokejumper who uncovers a decades-old secret connected to a past wildfire, intertwining her life with those who fought the blaze years ago.

Aleckson's writing skillfully blends the adrenaline-pumping action of battling wildfires with the intrigue of a historical investigation. The dual timelines create a rich narrative, allowing readers to become invested in both the present-day struggles and the historical events. The characters are well-developed, each grappling with their own personal demons and finding strength in unexpected places. The plot is intricately woven, with suspenseful twists that keep you guessing until the very end.

Overall, "Flashback" is a standout novel in the series, offering a perfect balance of heart-pounding action, intriguing mystery, and heartfelt emotion. It's a must-read for those who enjoy stories that combine thrilling adventures with deep, meaningful connections to the past.

This book is a story and a strong reminder of God's grace, which is freely given and becoming a new creation in Him. Whew, this one had suspense and my ire; my husband had to remind me a few times that this story wasn't real. Besides the suspense, we see two people learning to reinvent themselves and move on from rough pasts while realizing they were enough for someone else to love. I have loved this series and how each has a stanza from It is Well. This one is one of my favorites, "My sin— oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!— My sin, not in part but the whole, Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more, Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!" I can't wait to read other books by this author!
My favorite quote and reminder from this book is, "Maybe you’re so busy trying to prove something that you’ve forgotten who your heavenly Father is. He fought for you. He chose you. And all your sin, not just some of it, has been paid for and taken away. Instead of trying so hard to pay back the grace you’ve been given, why don’t you simply receive it for the gift it is?”

Flashback is book #3 in the Chasing Fire:Montana series. This book would be getting more than 5 stars from me if that was possible! I was drawn into the story from the beginning. Allie Monroe is training her new SAR K-9 when firefighters order evacuation because of wildfires in the area. Two little boys are missing causing Allie and hotshot firefighter Dakota Masterson to search for them before the fire gets too close. This is a story of overcoming the past, redemption, hope and faith mixed with fear and fast paced, edge of your seat suspense. The unexpected twists draw the reader even deeper into the story. This book is unputdownable.

TRIGGER WARNING: This book contains subjects that may be difficult for some readers. The subjects are domestic violence, drug abuse and abortion. I need to stress the fact that the author handled these subjects in a very sensitive, understanding and compassionate manner.

My thanks to the publisher for an ARC of this book. The opinions expressed here are mine.

Flashback

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Allie Monroe is in Montana training her new SAR dog, Scout, when two young boys go missing. With a wildfire threatening the campground where the boys were last seen, Allie and Scout are called on to find them.

Among the fire fighters sent to evacuate the campground is former SWAT officer Dakota Masterson. He and Allie have met before, and he's the last person she wants to work with on this rescue mission.

Two people believing one of Satan’s greatest lies. Your past defines you. It limits your future. It requires you push away anyone who cares. Guilt. Shame. Isolation. These were themes Allie and Dakota struggled through while fighting any sparks of hope that a fulfilling life might be possible. Aleckson illustrated how God’s love, compassion, and grace set us free, release our bonds, and place us in a broad place. Instead of constriction there is breath. We loved these themes being addressed, but missed deeper character development and grappled with the numerous characters and their connections to each other.

We received an advance copy from the author. This is our honest review.

Flashback is the third in the Chasing Fire: Montana series but stands alone just as well. That said, the whole series is great, so do consider reading the others.

The story centers around K9 SAR officer Allie Monroe who is grieving the loss of her former partner and struggling to bond with her new dog. When she’s caught near a wildfire with two missing boys, she’s forced to work with the man she just wants to forget, former SWAT officer turned Hotshot, Dakota Masterson. They survive the rescue but put themselves in the crosshairs of another deadly force and must continue their partnership to survive.

There’s so much to enjoy here. From the double whammy of suspense from the fire to the wider criminal threat. The plot is clever. And twisty. Watching Allie struggle to bond with her new dog tugged at my heart too. Then there’s the character development that Dakota has undergone from former addict to baby Hotshot and all around hero. This story is a winner, and highly recommended.

I received a copy of Flashback from the publisher. The views are all my own.

"We don’t always have answers for the way or why things happen. But know this: God’s forgiveness is complete. He’s not punishing you."

These stories are fast paced and high danger. In these fires the emotions run high and hot. This is my first by Aleckson and it’s a great addition to this multi author series. A redemption romance that really had me pondering my own reactions and opinions. A thread of learning God’s forgiveness and accepting it. A former addict, former SWAT, hotshot hero and a pastor’s kid search and rescue canine handler come together in this blazing inferno to search out some answers and find healing, much to their surprise. The journey we take with these heroes was not easy. There is a lot of pain- physical and emotional. I couldn’t put this book down and I’m excited for more in this series and from this author.

When I began reading this book, I expected another outstanding thriller like the previous books in the series. What I did not expect were the heartbreaking topics addressed in a wise and compassionate way, and that made this story stand out to me. Loss of family and pets, abortion, domestic abuse, drug addiction, and the scars that linger on afterward were handled in a biblical way that pointed the hurting to God, and that was my biggest takeaway from the book. There are second chances, you are not your past, and you are not unworthy of love, no matter what you have done. These truths were displayed in a compelling way through the realistic, broken, brave characters and perilous situations. I highly recommend this book and I am grateful for the opportunity to have read it.

Flashback is the most recent release in the Chasing Fire: Montana series, and they just keep getting better! If you love books about firefighter heroes, SAR K9 handlers, hidden pasts, fresh starts, and reunion romances, then this one is for you. Allie Monroe is desperate for a fresh start. After grieving the loss of her first SAR dog, she heads to Montana to train her newest K9, Scout. When two boys go missing near a wildfire, she volunteers to help find them. However, the last person she wanted to see out there, Dakota Masterson, is tasked to go with her.

Former SWAT, Dakota is a new man after confronting some of the demons of his past. Also trying to start fresh, Dakota is less than thrilled to find out he'll be working with Allie, fearing she might reveal his past to his new crew. He works hard to prove to her that he's changed, as she is also the woman he can't seem to forget. This book is packed with action, just like the previous ones, and you're going to have a hard time putting it down

WOW!! Suspense takes you from the first page, through to the very end!! Dakota and Allie have a limited past, yet, the tension and frustration come to the surface. Now, as Dakota works as a Smoke jumper, he has every intention on laying the past to rest in order to move forward with his family. Allie lost Dixie, her beloved SAR dog and attempts to train her new dog, Scout, without wounding her heart. Together, the find out danger exists even in the unlikeliest of corners - and that to truly save or be saved requires Faith from the heart. They realize, in the nick of time, that love can set us all free. The remaining gift is the salvation of Jesus. I thoroughly enjoyed the suspense, the thrills, the danger -- all wrapped up in the cobwebs of the fear. However, once they both realized the truth can set you free -- all hands on deck!! I give this book 5 out of 5 stars!! It's a rollercoaster ride, from beginning to end.

Flashback is a fast-paced novel that keeps the reader engaged with the characters and storyline from the opening pages until the last.
Both Dakota and Allie carry secrets that cause them to shy away from a relationship with each other and God. But when a wildfire threatens their lives and the lives of 2 young boys, they must learn to trust each other and God.
When Dakota and Allie hear some remarks by the young boys, they fear that they were witnesses to a murder. Without any law enforcement to back them up, they find themselves targeted by an unknown person or persons. Can they stay one step ahead of the fugitives or will God abandon them in their time of need?
As you surmise, Flash Back is Christian suspense book. While most of the threads are tied up, there is one that will carry over to the next book.

I must confess I am a BIG fan of Susam May Warren and Lisa Phillips's new brainchild! It is better than any action tv-series out there! Truth? I would rather read a new release than watch an episode!
Michelle Sass Aleckson did an excellent job with her installment! The suspense, adventure, drama, nailbiting and faith nuggets just upped a level. I love how Dakota and Allie grow and develop as characters! She had me on pins and needles about Scout and the boys! I could not stop reading untill the very last page. What an awesome faith punch: "Forgiveness and mercy can never be earned."
All the action and suspense I love but filled with the faith-nuggets I need! Cannot afford to miss it!

Flashback by Michelle Sass Aleckson is the latest installment in the rousing Chasing Fire: Montana series. In this 3rd book, we have the story of Allie and Dakota, a pair whose past scars acutely threaten their present budding romance. Aleckson pulled out all the stops with a plot that swiftly captured the senses, propelling her readers into a story filled with danger, mystery, and haunting emotion.

I loved every moment of this fast paced story. The complex characters, tender romance, and aching need for redemption touched my heart. This is my favorite of the series so far!

“God’s forgiveness is complete.”

This was such a great installment within an already amazing series. I loved the themes of faith and self forgiveness as the characters truly struggled with heart wrenching pasts. I truly appreciate that Aleckson showcased the internal struggle within each main character so the reader could easily follow why the characters were making certain decisions.

The suspense plot within this book definitely would get your heart racing but did not feel overdramatized or unnecessarily vicious. There was a motivation for everything, and Aleckson’s eye for detail really shines through within this book!
