SECRETS. BETRAYAL. SACRIFICE.
THIS TIME, THEY'RE NOT JUST FIGHTING FIRE.

An original series created by bestselling authors Susan May Warren and Lisa Phillips.

She never expected her second chance to show up…

When her special ops brother was killed, Sophie Lamb left everything—and everyone—behind to start over. Now the owner of a ranch that rescues neglected horses, they’ve become her entire life. And sure, she’s still haunted by the death of her brother, but she doesn’t have time to miss those she’s lost—including her high school crush, Houston James, who she absolutely never thinks about. Okay, almost never.

In the middle of a wildfire….

Houston James can’t catch a break. Sure, he survived a house fire, and became a youth pastor, but a recent false accusation in ministry has sent him into a summer fighting fires. The last thing he expects is to find the girl he can’t forget…

When the blazing Montana wildfire threatens her ranch, Sophie refuses to abandon her rescued animals. But the last person she expects to show up and demand her evacuation is of course, Houston James.

Then her prized stallion goes missing, and she and Houston must work together to track him down before the fire catches up to them. And when they stumble upon a shocking discovery, they are forced to work together, and confront their heartbreaking past, if they hope to survive.

In this relentless fight against external threats and the ghosts of their pasts, Houston and Sophie stand on the brink of a second chance. But the fight isn’t over when the threat she left behind finds her…now, what will her second chance at love cost her?

Don't miss out on this gripping tale of survival and redemption in the heart-pounding second installment of the Chasing Fire: Montana series.

The excitement of Chasing Fire: Montana continues with Flashover!

Flashover (noun): the sudden and rapid spread of fire through the air, caused by the ignition of smoke or fumes from surrounding objects.

The excitement is spreading rapidly in this series; the tension is almost to the breaking point, and I am all in! Readers are eager for next installment - where is the plot taking us already? Better yet, won’t you join me in this chase?

Flashover was a wild ride of emotions, a series of close-calls one after another, held together by the thread of faith. Both Houston and Sophie had difficult backstories, histories rife with struggle and pain; plus, they’d hurt each other. To the point that all seemed lost. But God.

Sophie and Houston quickly find themselves smack dab in the middle of danger, with no way out but to deal with the hurts, the wounds, the pain of the past, including the way they’d wronged each other. Working together became as necessary as breathing and leaning on each other, required for survival. And the end result: a beautiful story of faith, redemption, and healing. Thank you, Megan, for the poignant reminder (in prose form) of everything that is “on offer”, should we choose to accept the healing that’s ever-ready and available to each one of us, even if we have to fight for it. And yes, it’s worth the fight. Just ask Houston and Sophie! (I vote that this couple be now and forevermore dubbed: “Houphie”)

So, do yourself a favor and continue Chasing Fire in Montana! Keep that seatbelt securely fastened and enjoy this “newbie” author’s tale of overcoming obstacles (bye-bye, fear) while clutching hard to faith! You won’t be disappointed!

If I could, I would have finished this book in one evening, giving up sleep and hiding away from real life.

Yet hope in Christ didn’t mean there would be no more hardships.

I enjoyed the history and underlying chemistry between Sophie and Houston and how the dangerous situations helped to reconcile their friendship. With some troubled teens and an undercover agent possibly in danger, readers are in for a wild ride.

Don’t let yourself think that you can mess up so much that you can ruin God’s plans. I don’t understand all that He does, but He knows the bigger picture.

I also loved all how the author just made the spiritual element flow within the story, with a few lessons to take home for each reader.

Give God a chance to see how He planned your life. It might surprise you what He does.

Looking forward to the next book, because it feels like there is plot not yet solved which build within each installment of the series.

Don’t hate me, but Sophie, you’re a runner. Sometimes the good things in life are scary at first. God wants you to seek Him when you’re fearful, not hide from Him. Sometimes the bravest thing to do is simply trust Him.

This book was an excellent second chance romantic suspense. I was all in on the action and the love story. Not all loose ends tie up, so I assume they continue to the next book in the series.

Book two in the series continues the Hollywood film making and fire fighter romance combination. I particularly liked the question of whether or not Sophie's brother had really died three years ago. Lots of fire activity in the pages.

What an awesome read. Sophie and Houston have a past, but a misunderstanding caused a rift in their friendship. When they encounter each other during a wildfire in Montana, they have the chance to resolve their past. Both of them had obstacles and fears to face. Sophie, who had lost people she cared about in her life, had to stop running on her own strength and from God. Houston had to learn that God's plans were different from his intended plans.
Flashover has danger, action, second chances, horses, and unexpected surprises as Houston and Sophie must fight to survive the external threats. You don't want to miss this gripping romantic suspense story involving redemption and second chances.

I devoured this book!!
Sophie and Houston have a high school history, fueled by fear and miscommunication. They each also have personal traumatic pasts; they're currently healing from world's apart, until life unexpectedly thrust them back together! Their hurt and confusion surface and so does trouble at every turn. They can't catch a break from the twists and turns this book offers. But can they trust one another again as they navigate the punches life throws at them, while remembering that God is holding everything in His hands?

(I received an advance reader copy of this book. This review is my own perspective of this book.)

This action packed, second chance story stars a hero who carries scars over most of his body from a fire he survived when he was a teen. Houston is a character that I met in the book Expired Hope, which is from the Last Chance Fire and Rescue series and is about Houston’s brother, Macon. You can read Flashover without having read Expired Hope, but I appreciated the background of how the brothers worked through their problems as it touched on the fire that so changed their lives. Flashover is the second book in the Chasing Fire: Montana series. I have read book one and loved it, however, I think you could easily jump in and read Flashover on its own, as well.

I listened to the audio book version and thought that the narrator did a very good job with the voices. I was completely captivated by this exciting story. There were many times that Houston and Sophie had to run for their lives. I loved the way this brought them together and helped Sophie to connect with Houston and learn to forgive him for some things in their pasts.

I really enjoy second chance at love stories and I have found that I also appreciate when one of the main characters has some kind of scarring or physical disability that has made other people not open to a relationship with them. It makes it even sweeter when they find the person who loves them for who they are and are not caught up in their scarring, an injury, or a disability.

A romantic suspense story that didn't really grab my attention. While I don't mind Christian Authors I did feel that there was too much preaching for my taste and that took away from the Suspense story

This was wild and dangerous ride for the two main characters in this book. It seemed that they could not catch a break at all.

Sophie Lamb lost her parents when she was young and her brother had raised her. Now she has lost her brother as well. She finds comfort in horses that she has rescued. Fire is threatening to destroy her property and her beloved horses.

Houston James has had a tough life. He survived a house fire many years ago and still has the scars from that fateful night. You would think he would stay as far from fires as possible, but he is a firefighter. He shows up to help Sophie evacuate. This meeting is not going to go well. Houston broke her heart in high school and smeared her name. He wants to prove he is not the same foolish young man that he was all those years ago. She needs his help, so they team up together thinking this is just an evacuation. There is a whole lot more going on than meets the eye. There is more danger involved than fire.

The action was almost non-stop and the fires were devouring everything in their path. This set up a really scary scene, especially when you add in bad guys who want a piece of you as well. Both characters have pain in their past that has haunted them and has affected every facet of their lives.

This book was incredibly good. The suspense and mysterious vibe ratchets up with every chapter. The descriptions of the fire and how they fight these wildfires was so scary, but it was also interesting. Both characters had pasts that haunted them, but they were both strong and gutsy in everything they did. Neither one of them did anything halfway, which is an admirable trait. I am fully invested in this series, and cannot wait for the next installment.

Thank you to Sunrise Publishers for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Flashover had a lot to follow after Flashpoint, and boy, did it. This is one story that starts with a bang and keeps on going. MY reader-self thanks the author for one wild ride. The mom of two who needs her sleep is slightly less thrilled.

Houston James has a lot to prove. Lies forced his from the pastoral job he loved so he signed on as a one of the Jude County Hotshots, despite his firefighter brother Macon’s concerns. Houston suffered bad burns in a house fire but has pushed the memories aside as he works to earn enough money to go to seminary. How could he have predicted that he’d run into the girl whose heart he broke in High School. Or that the next thing he’d do was rescue her?

Sophie’s brother Crispin disappeared on a job for Homeland Security, and whatever his role, as the story opens, his career is putting her life at risk. Forced to relocate, she thought she’d found peace rescuing horses on her ranch in Montana. The last person she expected to help her survive is the boy who stood her up and shut her out. Only this time, Houston James is all man and he’s out for forgiveness.

ACTION AND ROMANCE

Where to start. Ive never read Megan Bessing before but she’s clearly talented. I’d say this is a plot driven story, but the relationship element holds equal balance and that’s not easy. The book opens with action and that doesn’t stop until the very end. Anytime there was a few pages without impending disaster or the response to a disaster, I grew uneasy, knowing it was only a matter of lines before another crisis. But even within all the trouble, the repair of Houston and Sophie’s relationship, and his facing old fears is uppermost and deeply encouraging.

If you like a fast paced but clever and touching romance, this whole series is highly recommended. I received a copy of Flashover from the publisher. The views are all my own.

Flashover by Megan Besing does a wonderful job at crafting moments with the wildfire that rang true for me. I have read all of Susan May Warren’s stories about wildfire and have seen firefighters fight them on television, so I had a good idea of what struggles they deal with. Besing does a wonderful job at describing the action and the setting for readers. As for the plot, I wanted more. It was not even until twenty percent on Kindle that the two dead bodies showed up. Even after the bodies were mentioned to the Sheriff, it did not seem that big of the deal that they were in the line of the latest raging fire. I have read books before where they tried to send someone out or have the person calling take as many pictures as possible, so they can document the crime scene. The Sheriff said he couldn’t get anyone there in time. Then the story moved forward with the heroine’s brother’s thread. As an avid reader of suspense novels, I wanted a lot more suspense element to my story. This story fell a little short for me. About seventy percent in, the climactic moment started to unfold, allowing readers to see the ending of the plot element. A little early for the ending of the novel. Also, the romance between the heroine and hero had a past, but it felt totally off to me. They worked through the issues from the past, and then moved onto wondering if they could start a relationship. I didn’t buy it. I think there would be more hurt from the heroine but that was just glossed over. Overall, Flashover by Megan Besing lacks the suspense punch that I wanted, and the romance felt really forced onto the characters. Even though this novel was not one of my favorites, I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.

I received a complimentary copy of Flashover by Megan Besing from Sunrise Publishing, but the opinions stated are all my own.

Wow! I thought Flashpoint, the first book in the Chasing Fire: Montana series was intense. The second installment, Flashover just upped the ante!

Despite their disastrous high school relationship that ended with both parties hurt, Sophie and Houston quickly found that a spark remained between them when they met up again. Sophie’s ranch where she rescued horses was in danger of wildfires in the area. Although firefighter Houston intended only to see that she evacuated quickly, a runaway horse precipitated their involvement in one dangerous situation after another, including the discovery of a dead man on her ranch. Somehow they managed to survive when all odds seemed against them and the only answer was that for some reason God had his hand on them.

Another exciting, breath-holding installment of the series, Flashover moved at a rapid pace that made it difficult to stop reading. There never seemed a good point to stop! A good dose of mystery and a developing second chance romance were bound together with a large injection of faith.

I thoroughly enjoyed Flashover despite my lifelong fear of fire. I eagerly await future installments of this excellent series.

Excellent next installment in this multi-author series, which I read in one sitting. This book had lots of profound moments as we watched both Houston and Sophie work through past hurts and current crises. It is a suspense-filled, second-chance romance with a scarred firefighter, a woman in hiding, and a bunch of reminders that through it all, "It Is Well with my soul." "Sometimes the bravest thing to do is simply trust HIM." Honestly, this book spoke to me as a reminder of God's faithfulness in the good and tough times. It's easy to forget that God will use us wherever He has us, even when we don't understand why we are in our current circumstances. “Don’t let yourself think that you can mess up so much that you can ruin God’s plans. I don’t understand all that He does, but He knows the bigger picture." I'm looking forward to the next book in this riveting series.
Favorite Quotes--
“I’ve proved to be a stubborn listener, but looking back, those trials or dreaded circumstances—or in your firefighter world, an ignited flashover, hot and heated one moment—God used those to make me into the man He wanted for His plans.”
"They would still face trials, but even through life’s flames, God’s plans always led to His hope and perfect peace."

This is book 2 in a series, but you don’t need to have read the first one to catch up. The setting and some of the characters are the same, and there is a mystery that weaves through the series, but you won’t miss out on anything if you only read this story. The timeline is a few weeks after Book 1, so there are some backstory mentions but nothing that will cause you any problems.

I love a story where a secondary character from another book gets to star, and this second-chance story introduces Sophie. She runs a horse ranch where all her animals have been rescued and has big dreams for building a future for herself. The drama that unfolds includes a forest fire, some rebellious teenagers and Houston, a firefighter (hotshot) who is filling in time while waiting for God to open the next door. He thought he knew what God had planned for his future, until he meets Sophie, a never-forgotten friend from his high school years.

The story races along with one challenge after another. I won’t spoil the story for you, except to say that God shows up for both Sophie and Houston in ways that neither of them even dreamed would be possible.

After I press the publish button, I’m racing to read book 3 in the series…

I really enjoyed this high-stakes second-chance romance. Filled with danger and intrigue, I could hardly put this book down. I was immediately hooked. The threat of the rapidly spreading fire kept the tension high. As did the mystery surrounding Sophie’s presumed dead brother.

I liked Sophie right off. She was kindhearted and determined. I loved how passionate she was about rescuing horses and enjoyed seeing the care she took with them. I liked Houston a lot. He’d been through a lot, but I loved how strong his faith was and how he leaned on God through everything.

Sophie and Houston have a history that dates back to high school. Things didn’t end on a good note, but I was rooting for them to work through their issues because they were perfect for each other.

This was the first book I’ve read by this author, but it certainly won’t be the last. I’m very eager to read more. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys high-stakes romantic suspense with a strong Christian message. While this is book two in the series, it can be read as a standalone, which is perfectly fine.

Whoa — intense (in the best kind of way!) An unputdownable whirlwind of a read! Well, listen in my case, since I ‘read’ the audible edition narrated by Garret Kiesel. Made for some compulsive listening!

So much to love about the story — from a second chance romance to a horse rescue ranch in the path of an out of control wildfire….just, phew! There’s literally no good place to stop so be prepared for a binge read/listen.

A thrilling mix of action and suspense. Through it all, Sophie and Houston have to navigate an uneasy alliance after a past heartbreak. And their back stories, especially Houston’s! It delivers a couple of emotional sucker punches. My heart hurt for him. Riveting stuff all the way through and the fire scenes — oy!!!! So horrifically realistic that I felt my skin blistering.

This is the second book in the ‘Chasing Fires: Montana’ series and I think this series is also a spin-off from another one but I read it fine as a standalone. I think there might be a bit of a crossover from book to book but not enough to confuse a new reader.

Buckle up y'all, are in for a wild ride with this one! So you know how with some books you are just waiting for the build up to just get there, yeah that's not the case with this one. This author comes out of the gates and did not disappoint. This is a new to me author and I am so ready for more. This is one of those books where you are like what is going to happen next. I really like Sophia she was a true fighter and did not really realize it till she was faced with the impossible. Houston was one of the stubborn characters where you just were not sure if you wanted to kick him or hug him. There is one character in the book I want to know what happens with but I really hope that this person comes back in other books in the series and this is not the end of it. Overall I really enjoyed this book and could not put it down, its well worth the read.

"Flashover" by Megan Besing, the second book in the "Chasing Fire: Montana" series, is a gripping tale of firefighting and personal redemption. The story follows a former smokejumper battling to overcome past mistakes while facing the unpredictable dangers of wildfire season.

Besing's writing vividly captures the intensity and chaos of fighting forest fires, immersing readers in the heart of the action. The protagonist's journey of self-discovery and resilience adds depth to the narrative, making it more than just a thrilling adventure. The plot is well-paced, with enough suspense to keep you hooked until the very end.

Overall, "Flashover" is a compelling read that combines adrenaline-pumping action with heartfelt character development, making it a standout in the genre of firefighting fiction.

Flashover is book #2 in the Chasing Fire:Montana series and it’s awesome! Megan Besing with Lisa Phillips and Susan May Warren gives the reader an in-depth insight into the world of wildfires and those who fight them. Sophie Lamb, ranch owner and Houston James Hotshot Firefighter have to work together to save Sophie’s horses, ranch and to stay alive as a wildfire rages near the ranch and town. The character's feelings are easy for the reader to grasp, feel and understand. There’s a well written thread of faith woven throughout the book. This is Christian romantic suspense with faith shining light in the darkness.

My thanks to the publisher for an ARC of this book. The opinions expressed here are solely mine.

Sophie and Houston may have been lab partners in high school and have both faced terrible circumstances but they are both fighters! Sophie rescues horses. Houston fights forest fires. When a forest fire threatens Sophie's horses, she and Houston find unexpected discoveries. Right now Sophie is fighting to save her horses but they both need to learn to let God control their future. Flashover has lots of suspense, action and danger! I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romantic suspense! I received a complimentary e-book from the authors and Sunrise Publishing. This is my honest opinion.

Flashover is the second book in the multi-author series, Chasing Fire: Montana. This one is brought to us by relatively new author, Megan Besing. This was my first time reading one of Besing's novels.

Houston and Sophie were the best of friends as teenagers, until the day he left town without a word and left her waiting for a date who never arrived. He was the last person she ever expected to see again, until the day he shows up at her ranch in the middle of a wildfire. In the chaos of evacuating, one of Sophie's rescued horses escapes and takes the two of them on a ride wilder than they could have ever imagined. Murder, a man who looks exactly like Sophie's dead brother, troubled teens, and a wildfire that just might catch up with them all lead to a fast-paced, action-filled story.

Flashover is a 3.5/5 stars book for me. I absolutely loved the premise behind the story and Besing described things in a way that felt like I was right there with the characters. Unfortunately, I struggled to keep up with the storyline for most of the book. A large part of the plot felt very rushed and slightly unrealistic in places (I can't imagine law enforcement being so laidback about a dead body being moved by civilians, regardless of the circumstances). The relationship between the MMC and the FMC seemed to go from animosity to "let's try again" way too quickly. Their interactions felt awkward and I kept waiting for the chemistry to arrive. I really wanted to love this one and have really struggled with how to rate it. Despite my personal feelings about this novel, I have high hopes for this series and can't wait to see what happens next!

I absolutely loved Houston and Sophie's story!

It was intense from the get go with a forest fire looming and threatening Sophie's horse ranch. Houston, working as a hotshot nearby, happened to be in the right place at the right time...and the adventure had begun.

The twists and turns were written into this story perfectly. I loved how Megan crafted both the adventure and the mystery into this story with a beautiful theme of God directing our path to where we need to be.

I am hooked on this series and I cannot wait for the next book to come out! Susan and Lisa are delivering on their promise of an adventurous summer!

“But there was only one Houston. A man who not only challenged her to endure life’s battles, but pointed her in the right direction with love and kindness, reminding her that there’s always hope and peace in the Lord.”

Houston and Sophie did not have it easy. From a difficult history together to overcome, past traumas, and new danger, it seemed as though everything was stacked against them from the start. But with God all things are possible. If you like:

🌿 redemption & second chances
🌿 clean romantic suspense
🌿 enemies to more
🌿 firefighter MMC
🌿 faith & forgiveness
🌿 forced proximity

Then you will adore Flashover! Add it to your TBR pile today.

Hang on to your seats as you're in for a wild ride. Flashover features Sophie Lamb, who after losing her parents, and the more recent disappearance of her brother, has found comfort in running her horse rescue. As fire threatens to destroy all she has build she has to turn to God, and to Houston, the one who had broken her heart all those years ago.

Houston James has also been running. After being pushed from the Church he was serving at due to the lies of another, he is trying to find his place in the world. But is his place with the hotshots? and what may come of his reaquaintance with the woman he cares so much about?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and recommend it to anyone who enjoys a fast paced, faith filled, action and suspense filled read.

I loved reading Sophie and Houston's story. I did not want to put this book down until I had finished it. Megan Besing does a wonderful job showing us the connection between Sophie and Houston and their painful past. When their paths cross again unexpectedly, they have to quickly learn to put the past behind them and trust each other enough to survive the fire and the threat on their lives. The theme of learning to face fears instead of running away and trusting God's plan over our own really resonated with me as a reader. I love the strong faith message and look forward to more from this author.

I listened to this on audiobook, and while the male reader was really good, this book was just terrible. I was really excited for the trope becuase I read so many good reviews and it has a fairly high rating, but this book was so boring, redundant, and LENGTHY.

Houston was a good character but he never really did anything of real importance, Sophie (AKA Rachel, AKA “lamby” 🙄) just acted dumb as rocks, and when Sophie’s brother (previously presumed dead) reappeared near the end it was just weird.
Her brother acted weird, things were so predictable, there was literally no romance or reason for Houston and Sophie to like each other, and the ending was lame. :(

I received an ARC of this book in return for an honest review.

Sophie rescues horses and has a few in the movie that is being shot near her new ranch. Houston is with the local hotshot group fighting fires in the area. When a wildfire threatens Sophie’s ranch Houston is sent to help evacuate her. When they meet sparks fly and the pasts that they have been running from come rushing back.

This is a fast moving thriller that explores how our pasts can affect our future and how God is in control. Excellent characters and exciting action highlight this story.

Sophie and Houston are wonderful characters trying to figure out what God wants from their lives. Sophie has a habit of running from situations instead of trusting God and dealing with them. Houston has his plans of what he believes God wants from him but what if his plans aren't God's plans. This story had action from the very beginning with a fire consuming the area where Sophie lives on her horse farm and Houston arriving to make sure the farm was evacuated. Plenty of action, suspense, mystery (is her brother alive), faith, humor, and romance. Definitely worth the read.
