Odd book. The heroine is a foundling who is washed ashore on the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland. Not a bad start to a story, but it doesn't go anywhere from there. The main character is a passive creature who somehow manages to marry her biological brother (without knowing who he is) and then sleep with her adoptive brother (after she found out she wasn't biologically related to him). Strangely, the second disturbed me more than the first. If you asked any pair of adoptive siblings if they fancied each other, I reckon you'd get the same ugh response as you'd get out of any pair of biological siblings . All in all, a drifting story with no satisfactory plot or conclusion.

A long and winding tale which takes place over many years moving between Ireland, England and America. it's a good story but maybe a bit dated now. It's the older type womens fiction rather than 'chick lit' therefore more concentration required and not written in such a 'chatty' style. There was incest involved in this which was off putting. first of all she married a guy she had no idea was her actual brother then throughout the book she had feelings for the bloke who she grew up with as brother and sister. all a bit weird but there was a decent enough story behind it all.

I really wanted to read more Irish authors because I thought hey that would be fun, but um, this wasn’t fun.

Getting 2 stars because there was *some* other plot and the nature descriptions were nice.


SPOILER! she had a child with her brother who she didn’t know was her brother at the time (the child had cerebral palsy and died rip) and then fell in love with her fake brother who she thought was her actual brother (huh 😃)

Das Buch hat mich definitiv sehr viel mehr gefesselt, als ich es erwartet habe. Die Geschichte war durch und durch schlüssig, was bei der Thematik sehr wichtig ist, weshalb ich darauf geachtet habe.

Da der Klappentext im Prinzip schon viel verrät wurde es an manchen Stellen sehr frustrierend, da die Charaktere immer wieder immer weiter von der Lösung abgekommen sind.

I am not really sure what to make of this story. It was ok but the incest element was weird. Also I found it a bit dull in places. Not one I would recommend.

Das Buch: Nach einem Flugzeugabsturz wird ein kleines Baby lebend an die irische Küste angespült. Die Familie O’Briain nimmt sie zu sich auf und das Kind wächst wohlbehütet auf. Von ihrer Vergangenheit weiß sie allerdings nichts. Und doch holt sie die Vergangenheit immer wieder ein. Selbst als erfolgreiche Schauspielerin…

Mein Fazit: Dieses Buch schildert eine Tragödie, die aber niemand so richtig kennt. Das Buch beginnt mit dem Flugzeugabsturz und schildert diesen ein wenig zu ausführlich über viele Seiten hinweg. Klar ist es relevant für den Leser, wie das Mädchen zu ihrer irischen Familie kam. Jedoch ist der Absturz an sich (und wie es dazu kam und was die Insassen dabei dachten) für den Verlauf der Story recht irrelevant. Und so etwas gleich am Anfang des Buches schreckt Leser ab. Aber Durchhalten – es wird besser.

Das Buch verfolgt die Charaktere, allen voran Molly und Conor in gewissen Zeitabschnitten über viele Jahre hinweg. Und bei so etwas erkennt man schon eine Entwicklung der Personen und was so alles im Laufe der Zeit passiert. Und so ist es eigentlich nur eine Familiensaga am Rande, da sich das Buch hauptsächlich um die Geschwister Molly und Conor dreht. Das ist nicht weiter schlimm, der Leser verliert nie den Überblick über die Charaktere und der Familie.

Somit ist dieses Buch sehr für Leser von Familiensagas und von Geschichten, die über einen längeren Zeitraum verfolgt werden, geeignet. Auch Irlandfans kommen auf ihre Kosten, obwohl doch ein großer Teil später in London spielt. Es ist ein Buch über eine Familie, einem Geschwisterpaar, einer erfolgreichen Schauspielerin, der Liebe. Ein tolles Buch für einen kalten Nachmittag, da hier das Herz des Lesers sicherlich am Ende erwärmt wurde.

i wasnt sure about this book,the uncomfortably incestuous relationships,and the obsessed priest plotline made this book a bit hard to read, which is a shame because the storyline to begin with really drew me in,i loved the fact that it was set around galway and particularly on the aran islands,but i still dont think it was one of her best.

Ik heb me echt door dit boek heen moeten worstelen, vooral het begin vond ik behoorlijk taai. Er zijn nauwelijks dialogen maar steeds weer een pagina vol omschrijvingen van gevoelens en gebeurtenissen. Het verhaal is na het eerst hoofdstuk al aardig voorspelbaar, het is tijdens het lezen alleen even afwachten wanneer de auteur met de diverse onthullingen komt ...
