The Fall (book 1 from the "Caught Off Guard" series)
Desiree Parker wants nothing to do with men. She has been through heartbreak and adding the complication of men to her busy life would lead to nothing but expected trouble. Desiree has strived to become the successful business woman that she is today by staying focused and keeping her heart off-limits. Owning her own business in the heart of Manhattan, she and her best friend, Emily, deal with the past the only way they know how. By avoiding any serious relationships. However, you throw in a tall, successful, sexy male into the mix and all rules get thrown to the wind.
Liam Hunter wants one thing in life and he will pull out all the stops to make Desiree his.
Liam has not made it this far in life by accepting no for an answer. He will do whatever it takes to win Desiree's heart. Even if it means taking it all from her.
Secrets are kept and rules are broken. Hearts will break and lives will shatter.
Brief synopsis: Desiree Parker is independent, smart, beautiful...and she has a secret. So when she meets Liam, the guy of her dreams she's scared. Scared that he will break her heart because he's too good for her and scared that if he loves her and finds out her secret, he won't understand. Liam has a secret, too and it might just be too much.
Originality: I think it's hard to be original in the romance genre-it seems they are more about passion and chemistry, as they should be, but I did love the mix of romance and mystery and thought this added original flavor to the story. Not only am I chasing Liam with Desiree, but I am dying to know her secret. The author did a beautiful job weaving the mystery through the storyline, never giving too much away.
Characters: Ms. Sommers did a wonderful job creating characters that drew me in right away. Liam is easy to love. He's well developed, rich, gorgeous and has a personality-not to mention a yacht and Mi Dulce Angel! I enjoyed Desiree's character as well. I am not much for damsel in distress type leading ladies, so Desiree is refreshing. She's also not one of those blind fools that leaves caution completely to the wind.
Recommendation: This goes well with fine wine, anything covered in truffle oil and a night on the water! I highly recommend The Fall if you like a great romance that will sweep you away.
What a well-paced book. I found the characters incredibly appealing and there was a vulnerability about Desiree that was really endearing. Doesn’t every woman desire to be swept off her feet like that by a powerful multi-millionaire who seems to own most of the city? There was a sense all the way through that it was all too good to be true and when it bit poor Desiree I wasn’t surprised. But I was astounded by her final one liner. Oh yeah!
Beautifully written, hooked me up from page one, and didn't let up until the end-ish. Yes it has a cliffhanger which killed me BUT it is so worth it. You will really fall in love with characters, Desiree and Liam, and the fun friend Emily. Anyways read it and fall in love with all of them.
Romance. This story is literally about romance, subtle and bold. The characters are strong, yet they show their vulnerabilities. One of the leads, Liam, is very strong, very sexy, and yet has his vulnerable moments, too. These my be elusive to some readers that are more absorbed in his physical attributes, but shown as real tangile feelings that are exposed but not exploited by the author. The other lead character, Desiree, has a secret. A painful one that intrudes on her present life and connections, including with Liam. It is a romance that is written with not just dialogue, but sensual details. Most of the romance books today are heavy into the sexual details. This is not. This story flirts with the concepts and senses, but doesn’t grind out all the details to the end. It leaves you wringing the rest out in your mind, so you can move on, or not. It makes for a good book to ponder. For the imagination. I enjoyed the story and the characters, especially Liam. He is quite interesting. And sexy, which doesn’t hurt either. I didn’t realize when I selected this book that there was a sequel to these two characters. So now I am on to finding the second book because you know I can’t stop without a formal ending. There are 4 books in this series, and all but the last, I think, are about Desiree. Even if I had read that before I got the book, I would have still purchased it to read. I love series. If romance is your genre pick, or you just want a romance read to interrupt your normal purview, then this is a good selection. The characters are relatable and fun, and you will appreciate the sweet and realistic story.
Twenty-five-year-old Desiree Parker is a successful pastry chef. When she meets a handsome stranger who seems interested in her, she ignores the opportunity for a potential romance. After all, she is busy with her business, which she runs in conjunction with her best friend Emily. And she's trying to disentangle from her persistent ex, Alex. Desiree does not have time for any more drama in her life.
Liam Hunter, Cofounder, President and CEO of Hunter Holdings, knows what he wants. And he wants Desiree.
Talented author L. Sommers' The Fall (Book 1 in the "Caught Off Guard" series) is a fun and interesting book. Ms. Sommers is also the author of Charlie : Charlie, another fun read for romance lovers. She does an excellent job introducing us to characters who not only catch our attention, but also keep it.
Just finished this story last night. It's a great start to the series- definitely got me intrigued about the next book. Liam... yeah, what can I say? Hot, sexy, rich... ahh but of course, we don't know anything about Liam. The mysterious Liam is full of surprises indeed. Desiree initially fights her attraction toward him, but of course the hero is persistent. But why? Why her? He can get any woman... And so the story begins. This is a great book if you're looking for a romance story. I like the author's imagination and will definitely read her next book to find out where this story goes.
Ooh to be Desiree! I particularly enjoyed the suspense, was a page turner for me. Well written and an intriguing Romance at it's best. The author handles the first person narrative beautifully. I want to meet a Liam Hunter look alike! Talk about cliff hangers. Off to dive into The Hidden Truth.
Well written, although some editing issues towards the end. Great plot with lots of unexpected twists and turns. Especially the cliff hanger at the end.
Really wanted to love this book with the good reviews and high score but I can only reach a 3.5 star at best. Basic writing, under developed storyline and predictable. Shame as had great potential.
