What a great book (and series). So often, as the mother of boys (8 & 10), it's difficult to find suitable books for my sons and when I do, they're often British/American. This book (and again, series) provides an entertaining way of educating my sons about times in Australian history. My 10y.o. son often begs for 5 more minutes of night-time reading when I call lights out.
This book in particular tells the story of Tom and his Daredevils mates as they struggle to survive the Depression. When Tom's father loses his job, Tom decides it's up to him to save their house. The dog show scene led to belly laughs. My son almost wet himself as he recounted it to me but I still laughed out loud when I read it myself even though I knew what was coming. Incorporating real figures from history was a stroke of genius. I hadn't heard of MacPherson Robertson before but thanks to this book, I'll not forget our very own Willy Wonka. The facts at the end of the book are also quite interesting. Thanks Penguin for bringing these books to my sons, they're teaching their father about history and surprising teachers with their knowledge...and I've learnt a thing or two too!
Any parents considering these books, do buy them. This book in particular would also suit girls with the feisty and quite capable Joan showing the boys a thing or two. Cannot recommend it enough.
