This is the second book, first published in 1994. It includes over 80 stories and drawings. Many of our collectors have said this book expands on the laughter and lunacy of the first book, Mostly True. It includes such favorites as 'Angels of Mercy' ("Most people don't know there are angels whose only job is to make sure you don't get too comfortable & fall asleep & miss your life") and 'True Things' ("they came to sit & dangle their feet off the edge of the world & after awhile they forgot everything but the good & true things they would do someday").
The Publisher Says: Expands on the laughter and lunacy of the first, with over 80 of Brian's stories & drawings, including such favorites as Angels of Mercy & True Things.
My Review: Three years ago, I heard about Brian Andreas somewhere and somewhen. I got a good deal of urging by friends who had read it and thought of me the whole time (or so I'm assured).
I guess I'm weirder than I thought.
Make that "more beguiling," as I'm also referred to for reasons best left unlearned. I hope all y'all will read and review the book. I want to know why the darn thing reminds people of me!
"As long as the sun shall rise goes the old lover's vow. But we are children of a scientific age & have no time for poetry. Still I offer a quite prayer of thanks for the sunlight each time I see your face."
I read a lot of Brian Andreas during my formative years, and that just may explain some of my quirkiness! Either you get him, or ya don’t. If you do - then you’re my kinda people.
"he kept a piece of algae behind his ear to remind him of his roots. A million years ago every place was a little place by the sea, he would say & my mind would go blank & I would swim through the day without a care in the world & it all seemed so familiar that I knew I would go back someday to my own little place by the sea" -Brian Andreas
Thank you for this. I think I might have needed it.
Glad I found Brian Andreas after seeing his colorful posters in a handful of places. Slowly trying to collect all his story collections which just make me feel so good inside to read, re-read, and share.
I loved this short book of poems and illustrations. The distorted semihumans make me feel pleasantly uncomfortable. I read it through one time and then immediately did a second read through so that I could add some of the poems to my journal. Its a real shame that I have no way to also copy the art in there as well, because I am doing myself a MASSIVE disservice of separating the art and the writing. They work so beautifully together. My one critique is a pretty surface value one of "okay, well some of those were lame." But I feel as though that happens in almost every book of poetry or collection of short writings. The large majority are of quality so the handful of less than fantastic ones are easy to overlook. And a bonus little pleasant surprise, I found out that an art print that I have had for a year or so and knew nothing about is called "Crossing the line" by Brian Andreas. That was pretty neat.
Brian Andreas masterfully uses symbolism to explore the complexities of human connection and emotion. Through his signature blend of whimsical prose and striking illustrations, he transforms ordinary moments into metaphors for self-discovery. Andreas’s unique approach to storytelling highlights the power of symbolism in capturing the essence of what it means to be human.
Probably one of my fav poetry books ever. I love the humor. I love the irony. I love the playfulness. I find that poetry too often over complicates things, which can be awesome if your trying to make your brain go on over drive. This book, you don’t have to work on the message too hard. It just comes to you. It’s silly, it’s playful, it’s beautiful.
“i was waiting for the longest time, she said. i thought you forgot. it is hard to forget, i said, when there is such an empty space when you are gone.”
“she seemed to move everywhere dancing & music followed her like leaves on the wind.”
reading this made me realize that i am not a good writer. my poetry is too much and too simple. this writing will come with age, life. i am far too young to remember my youth in a bright light and too old to be forward. however what i write is beautiful and what brian has wrote is beautiful.
Always love these. "When people asked how old she was, she would say 1009365 more or less because she was so glad to be alive that she counted every day a birthday"
I love Brian Andreas' art and stories. It's unique in a world where much is the same. Some of the stories are just nice. And there is an occasional one I read with a "huh"? And there are many little gems that expand my world just a little bit. I've read and own many of the books, though I'll mark just this one.
And I thought of adding this just now because my little story of the day arrived in my inbox (sign up at the website) and I smiled.
I bought this collection of quirky, funny and touching drawings and thoughts at the same time I acquired one of his drawings ~ my favorite ~ which reads, "My mother always told me to finish what I started, but she had no idea of some of the people I'd be dealing with." I love the humor and truth of that line. They know who they are!!
I have read this book time and time again, in Kristens garage. I have laughed, had tears in my eyes, coveted the images as my own, and desired this book to take me to bed.
Truly refreshing, had me laughing out loud- literally, and because I was at a Chipotle's restaurant, I was lucky not to choke on my rice and beans, lol
