Fated by Starlight #1

Claimed by the Lion

Rate this book
Wishing on a falling star is supposed to be a silly family tradition. It’s definitely not supposed to send me and my sisters to another dimension.

When I wake, my sisters are gone, and in their place? A prehistoric-sized lion… who shifts into a man.

He insists I’m his fated mate. Yeah, right. I’m desperate to find my sisters and get back to Earth. But when his touch triggers magic in me, he’s sure it’s proof we’re destined.

Whatever the power is, it attracts a creature out for my blood… and my sisters’. According to Ras, only mating will unlock my full powers and keep me safe.

All I know for sure? It’s getting a helluva lot harder to resist the attraction between us.

Quick(ish) Review

I firmly believe in trying anything 3 times. And I need to because this first book was a mixed bag.

I like the setup to this ‘verse but this particular story gets bogged down with some repetitive inner monologuing. The MMC doesn’t remember anything until his mate shows up, the FMC just got out of an abusive relationship. Like that day before she was drawn through a “gate” into this other realm called Vraya. The story picks up in the back half and I’m intrigued with the next couple but ultimately this story was a bit meh. But I’d rec only for completists like me. We’ll see how the next book goes.

“I want to worship; I want to drown in her. I am lost.”
~~~
Lana is one amazing woman! Despite everything she’s been through with her ex, she’s one tough cookie. I loved her strength and bravery when facing danger, her kindness and her determination to find answers, her sisters and discover her true purpose. I loved everything about her!
Ras is one fearsome Lion! He’s big, strong and fiercely protective. Also, he’s very thoughtful, caring, patient and really knows how to treasure a woman. And I absolutely loved his playfulness and teasing! He’s so amazing!
The development of their relationship was so perfect! They were so great together and complemented each other so well. The chemistry between Lana and Ras was absolutely amazing and their passion - scorching hot. After everything Lana has been through, she more than deserved such a magnificent male.
Moreover, we get to dive deeper into everything that’s happening on Vraya - this world is so vivid, magical and diverse that it just sucks you in from the very first page and doesn’t let go. In addition, I cannot wait to see what will happen with Ali and Mina! And, yeah, Kaus definitely needs a mate soon!
Overall the story is a magnificent read filled with adventure, danger, fast-paced action, suspense, humor, steamy romance and wonderful characters.
I couldn’t put it down and absolutely loved every page of it!
Wishing on stars with her sisters is a tradition her father told her all about the stars what she didn't know was there are whole new worlds out there and she has just found a lion/man. He calls her his fated mate, but is that true, or is he just trying to seduce her? Fated mates bear the mark of the stars and hope returns to a world where is has not been for hundreds of years.
This situation unfolds in a complex and often hostile environment, raising concerns about the safety of the human women. As the story progresses, the dynamics between the women and the alien alpha warlords evolve, highlighting the protective instincts the warlords feel toward the newcomers. This interplay leads to intense chemistry among the characters, prompting them to confront their feelings and desires amidst the challenges they face.
The narrative is rich with elements of action, misunderstandings, fear, pain, love, and humor, creating a multifaceted exploration of relationships across species and the journey toward mutual understanding and connection.
Starlight, starbright
Typical me, I missed reading the prequel book for this series and delved right into the heart. There were a few things that left me wondering, but I didn’t feel lost or confused because I skipped the previous book. I really enjoyed the characters and how they were able to overcome their pasts to connect in the present. The storyline was interesting and I am intrigued by the threat to the starbound’s world. I love that after just one book I’m completely vested in the outcome for the sisters and the planet. This book was a fantastic read and I can’t wait to read the next installment.
I've been reading this on and off for the past few months when I have insomnia.
I'm not going to rate it because I accidentally bought it on Kindle and I don't believe in returning books. I'm not the target audience, and although I finished it, I only did so out of a stubborn need to make my accidental purchase worth it.
The storyline's decent and it has loads of angst from a woman who went through a portal to find herself fated to a lion shifter. It's designed to be a series, so there are many open threads at the end of the book that remain unresolved.
The best thing about it is that the hunky lion shifter wants to take care of his mate.
Paused. Too put off by the FMC.
2⭐️’s at this read, may try again another time.
Bluntly, I don’t like the FMC. While she is supposed to have just escaped an abusive relationship, she doesn’t read that way.
She reads like someone on the re-bound, all obsessed on her ex, self involved, oblivious of others, immature, and shallow emotions.
She occasionally reacts to triggers, but it’s a flash, gone as quickly as it arrives, making it read as more melodramatic, rather than believable or evoking empathy.
The MMC has just awoken with amnesia, to find his world decimated, all his people, family, friends, gone.
At first he’s all primitive reactions, no realisation, but slowly starts to remember. During all of this, he puts her needs and well-being first above everything else.
While the FMC may not have grasped all of this, she sees enough.
The closest bit of compassion she shows however, is her reassurance that he will eventually get his memory back.
She goes on and on about herself and sisters (understandable to an extant), but never questions anything about his loved ones, family, or life beyond what she needs (not understandable).
Considering her backstory (limited though it is at this point), and the constant references to how her ex treated her, her reactions seem off and confusingly selfish.
Her character is lacking any sort of pragmatism or skill set after having survived such a relationship for several years. Either attempting to pleases, manage, hide, stay quiet… something?
Not sure why include such a traumatic past relationship, bringing it up so many times, only to then just as quickly forget it?
It’s barely even used as a plot device, mostly it just makes her confusingly annoying and un-relatable.
This is all especially disappointing as the author is normally very talented at writing likeable, sympathetic, and entertaining FMC’s.
I’m sure there are many that this works for, but sadly, I’m not one of them.
Moreover, I kept getting dragged out of the story by my reactions to her, so couldn’t lose myself or enjoy the story as a whole.
This fantasy romance sounded quite promising from the blurb, and though the whole "fated to be together" trope is far from being my favourite, I was curious to see where the story would go. It didn't meet all my expectations, hence the 3 stars rating.
First of all, let me say I like that it's dual POV and that chapters are short, it keeps the story going and it's easy to get lost in the pace set by that format. The difference between Lana's and Ras' thinking was easy to spot and interesting to follow, and you get to see glimpses of this whole different world through that. They're also interesting characters though I would have liked to see them be more developed.
My main issue with this book is that more than half of it revolves around being mated (yes, it means what you think it does) and the sexual tension between the two, and little else. Lana overcomes her issues really easily, when you keep track of the time that passes, and all the issues are resolved quite quickly as well. That's why I'm disappointed and can't give a higher rating: the world building is starting to get interesting, you get to see different characters and want to know what happened, you start to get invested (because it's finally not all revolving around sex) and all of the sudden everything goes very quickly and it's the end, tied with a nice bow. Or at least it felt that way (can't get precisely into why without spoilers). I would have preferred a slow burn and even not knowing entirely where this romance will go by the end of the book because it would be much more realistic. But that might be just me.
I'm not entirely certain I'll read the following books, my curiosity was piqued but I can't say it'll be enough for me to get through another one.
I know lots of other people have been delighted with this book, so you should go ahead and form your opinion about it.
Lana has been in a bad relationship for a few years. Finally she has the chance to escape her abusive and controlling ex . She and her sisters have gotten together for weekends away for years but she has had to miss the last few years because of her ex. This year she escapes to join her sisters on their camping and star gazing getaway. Their father was an astronomer and he had named his daughters after the stars of Orion's belt. When they see a falling star the sisters make a wish. The youngest wishes for a life of adventure. The next thing Lana knows,she wakes up to the strange sound of a lion's roar. She and her sisters seemed to have slipped through a portal to another planet. A huge lion suddenly appears and turns into a man right before her eyes. Lana is shacked and aroused. When he calls her mate, she is both aroused and confused. When he touches her she suddenly shows magic powers that she has never seen before. Ras says it because they are mates and Lana might be beginning to believe him. However she won't do anything until she finds her sisters who have disappeared the previous night.
Ras is a lion shifter and a guardian. He has been asleep for a long time. When he wakes up this time, he is happily surprised to scent his mate nearby. His lion rushes to her. Ras finds Lana, his long awaited fated mate. Ras quickly starts to feel like his lion is more in control than he is. He struggles to control the urges of his lion. The long sleep has messed with his meories and thought and he is almost out of control. Only Lana can help him return to himself again.
DNF at 56% I am so bored.
I hated the fmc of the last book, the prologue to this series. And our fmc of this story, Lana started off strong but the author does an awful job at Lana's inner monologue. This girl just keeps talking to herself in circles. The woman is overwhelmed sexually and can't control her lust and I never really figure out if it's just her own control or is it the mate bond making them need to bond that makes them horny. If so, explain it to the reader, make it like a "heat" or something. It comes across as these adults can't control themselves or the bad decisions they make? Not that sex itself is bad but Lana deems it as bad. She is very, "I don't want to fuck because I just got out of an abusive relationship. my sisters are missing. this man is a lion." But it's so annoying when they cant have one conversation without her thinking about his body or dick or him seeing her ogling him.
It's "He's so hot.. but omg a lion! but his shoulders are so strong and he's kind! But I just got out of an abusive relationship and what if this is just a trick? Okay, maybe I'll flirt a little and give him heated stares. OMG he doesn't get it that I don't want to be touched. Omg touch me." and round and round it goes until they do it because they just can't control themselves. (I effing hate this, it's not an excuse.)
It's very much like the prologue and from the other reviews of the next two books, they all follow the same line of story with the emotions and leading them on and confusion. No thanks. It got so old. The pacing is so damn slow.
Lana has just escaped a 3 year abusive relationship. She’s on her way to New Mexico to meet her sisters for their annual camping trip. She’s so happy to be starting over and being with her sisters. They all make a wish on the stars as per camping tradition but things are not normal when Lana wakes up. She wakes up in the desert but it’s different, there are Lisa Frank colored bees and a prehistoric sized lion/man. Ras is from the house of Leo. Has been asleep so long her forgets he’s part man. He finds Lana who he knows immediately is his fated mate. They quickly run into danger and have to hide in a cave. Lana is scared, lost and still very much healing. Ras is slowly getting back his memories and trying to win Lana over. Once they’ve bonded they set out to find her sisters and to build their bond. There are zodiac creatures/men, scary creatures, vampires, multidimensional travels, war and romance. This book has an HEA and can be kind of read as one book but it’s also a cliffhanger. She finds one sister but is searching for the other. It was a fun read. It really starts getting good at the end and I’m ready to know what happens with Ali and Lesath. We didn’t find out anything that was going on with Mina and her mate. So yeah excited for what’s next.
After starting this one, I realized there's a prequel that I missed, I don't think I missed out on too much but I do plan on going back and reading it.
This book: The sisters go on a camping trip, a tradition they've missed out on for a few years bc life. They are looking at the stars, wishing, when the next thing Lana knows, she's waking up in an alternate world as a witch & confronted by a lion who seems eerily intelligent.
Ras is a lion man, head of house Leo, who's been forced into a magical sleep for years and years- his mate coming to his world, Vraya, is what awakened him.
Ras has to convince Lana it's all real and to help his cause, while keeping her safe from the terrors of his world that are a part of a curse the vampire aliens brought to his world. It gets even worse the more they touch and bond.
The beginning was a tiny bit slow, 4.5stars, which honestly is expected when building a world. But it soon picked up, and I was loving the adventurous journey fraught with peril, spice in cave w/magical amenities & a pool, and new magical friends (one a fellow witch) that helps explain the houses and zodiac enriched powers.
This book can standalone with a HEA for the couple but I suggest reading in order due to possible recurring cast and overarching storylines.
Read whatever makes you happy! Then tell me about it lol.
Good
When Lana wakes up on a strange world, and is confronted with a lion-man, she is pretty sure she is dreaming it doesn’t take long to realize that it is not the case!
Ras, the scion of the House of Leo, has been asleep for a long time. The scent of his mate woke him, and upon finding Lana he begins to regain his senses.
The Starbound are returning to the world of Vraya, but there are Harbingers and Vampires to fight, pasts to overcome, and mating bonds to navigate…
This is the second story in the series, although it’s the first full length book, and the first featuring a trio of sisters. As part of an ongoing plot, it’s important to read the books in order, because the storyline builds on each one.
It’s an enjoyable series, with interesting characters, and an intriguing ongoing storyline. I am particularly interested in exactly what caused Ras and his zodiac brethren to lose themselves, so hopefully future books will have answers!
There is a lot of romance, some character development, and a little action adventure. The bulk of the plot centers around the budding relationship, but the longer ongoing story is the one that will keep readers coming back for more!
An entertaining series for sci-fi romance fans.
This is a very enjoyable story which is about Lana Kit and Ras. Lana Kit flees her abusive boyfriend and meets her sisters, Mina Kat and Ali Lamn, in the desert of New Mexico at their father's land. That night drinking and roasting marshmallows around the campsite, they watch a meteor shower and each make a wish on a falling star. Lana Kit and her sisters get a case of Deja vu and fall asleep. Then Lana Kit wakes up hearing a lion roar and her sisters missing. Meanwhile Ras wakes up smelling his mate and as a lion seeks her, wanting to mate. Ras realizes Lana is scared of him as he turns into a man. Ras is struggling to remember how to talk to Lana. Lana realizes she not on Earth anymore. Ras takes Lana and takes her to his home, but it is nothing but rumble. What destroyed his home and why he was sleeping in a cave? Can he persuade Lana to trust him and to be his mate? This story was a steamy read with very likable characters with action and drama in an engaging story that I volunteer to read and review via Booksprout. This first story lays the groundwork on the coming stories of the sisters meeting their own mates in future stories.
What an interesting ride! Lana and her sisters camping trip becomes way more than they bargained for when they cross to another dimension. Who knew making a wish on some stars would open that door? Claimed by the Lion is the fated mates story of Lana and Ras. Ali and Mina’s stories are to be told in future books.
I really love Lana. She’s strong, brave and witty. She finally escapes an abusive relationship so she struggles with trusting her feelings for Ras. Ras, despite being self described as impatient, does his best to take it slow with Lana. Ras respects Lana and eventually their bond can’t be denied. Ras and Lana are a great match. Their chemistry is electric. He eases her doubts and she compliments his leadership strengths. It’s inevitable that a huge battle is coming since Starbound women are returning in droves and these two will be crucial to ensure a win.
Overall - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Claimed by the Lion isn’t a book I’d typically read. I enjoyed the journey. Love, sex, shifters and vampires - always a recipe for a great read! I’m looking forward to getting the stories about the other sisters and seeing how they overcome the Butcher King.
An interesting paranormal/sci-fi romance. Lana is shocked to wake up and find herself in another dimension/world after wishing on falling stars with her sisters. A massive lion comes stalking towards her and turns into a sexy naked man, Ras immediately realizes she is a Starbound woman and his fated mate.
The world building by the author is very detailed and took me more than a few chapters to start to understand enough to become engaged with the storyline and the characters. There are many things taking place and I didn’t read the prequel novella which may have helped me understand things quicker.
The storyline does continue into the next books with Lana’s sisters and their mates, but Lana and her relationship with Ras is definitely a happily ever after. The last 1/4 of the book was really good and I didn’t want the book to end yet, so I will look for the next book in the series in January. Despite a little rough beginning, which could be just me, this was a very enjoyable and entertaining book.
I received an ARC from the author through Hidden Gems, and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
Lana and Ras . . .
When Lana and her sisters watch a meteor shower out in the desert, each of them makes a wish on a falling star. They fall asleep and Lana wakes up elsewhere, not sure what is happening, but her sisters are missing. A lion, scenting her as his mate, shifts into a man and tries to tell her she is his mate. Lana has just left an abusive relationship, so she is not one to quickly trust. Will the powers she is starting to gain be able to keep her safe? Will Ras be able to convince her of his claim that she is his mate, especially important since their mating will provide them even more safety? Will she feel their bond grow stronger as they spend more time together and she learns she can trust him?
The author did a good job giving us adequate world-building as this takes place ultimately in another dimension. The characters seem well suited for each other, and they will need to rely on each other to face obstacles in their adventure.
Lana and her sisters wish upon a falling star when they get together for a camping trip, after years apart. The wish for adventure happens when Lana wakes up alone, with a large prehistoric lion coming towards her. Ras has been asleep a long time, waiting for his mate to show up, which caused him to wake and seek Lana. The adventure builds quickly as predators are after them and she must find her sisters. By mating with Ras, her mate, a magic grows within her that is new and their intense feelings skyrocket. Loved the characters, their backstories, the romance and adventure in this well written series. Can not wait to read more of this group as more of it comes to light. Great ending so far and nice buildup to the next.
"He’s the only person I can count on right now because lord knows I have all the survival skills of a cream-cheese frosted strawberry cupcake."
I've said it once and I'll say it again, I love January Bell's humor!🤣 I highlighted so many quotes and laughed at different parts of this book from Lana's inner dialogue. I also totally melted at how sweet Ras was. He was just downright swoonworthy and so incredibly loveable! I also loved seeing Lana's growth throughout this book. I just loved everything about this story! The worldbuilding was lush and creative, the star oriented bonds between the couples was such a cool concept, the women are all strong, badass characters, the spice was off the charts hot, and the romance was so incredibly sweet! I'm honestly kicking myself for not having read this sooner!😅 I can't wait to read the next book pronto!
Lana is headed to meet her sisters for their yearly camping trip. She's so happy to be away from her abusive relationship and starting over. They make their wish on the stars as is their tradition. When Lana wakes up she's not in the desert she went to sleep in. There is a lion roaring and no sisters in sight. Ras is the lion and he wakes up smelling his mate. Lana and Ros have amazing chemistry and their bond gets strong the longer they are together. With their bond Ros unlocks more of Lana's magic. There is action, mystery, magic and hot steam . It's a well written story and great HEA> I can't wait to read the next book by this author. I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
wonderfully unusual
I thought this would be “just” a shifter, human mated book. So much more.
The author surprised me in many ways. Enjoyed the way the Lion, was portrayed. His character did not sound like he was from earth, or with our values, etc. rare to have any author skilled in this practice.
Hoping their will be more then two books in series.
To author: Pretty please make the vampire king not bad, but misunderstood? Maybe the human fled because he and she needed to learn lessons, and time. Now she comes back with skills, knowledge and the other light bringers to convert the vampires.
Oh well, that is what I (definitely not a good story teller) would do.
A good first book and world building
I enjoyed reading this first book. There is good world building too that happens naturally within the storyline. The start is where the main lead male character Ras is awakened from a deep sleep. He awakes with no memory but a little knowledge. The first thing is thinks is that he scents his female mate and that he must find her. Now his mate Lana has just escaped her ex boyfriend an abuser. The abuse happens off page but is spoken about in conversations. Will Ras be able to communicate with his mate Lana? Will he be able to keep her safe from the dangers on planet Vraya? Read On!
The book has dual pov. which I really appreciated because I typically like to read just the womans point of view but Ras' chapters created a nice contrast.
My problems is mostly that the story is very dragging. Things happened but it was all so easily solved that I couldn't even care.
First he doesn't remember anything but then they have sex and that cures him. Why make it that easy? It would have been so much better if they were to explore this mystery together.
She also is saying the whole time that she does not want a relationship that soon after her terrible ex which was pretty understandable but than changes her mind and loves Ras just because?
Lana os escaping an abusive relationship to start anew beginning with camping and stargazing with her sisters after three years of isolation. The three of them make a wish and end up separated in a different world where she has the power of the stars and the signs are house’s commanded by shifters.
Ras is the head of the House of Leo, a Lion shifter and Lana’s mate.
This book is a journey of discovery, world introduction and a love story where the MC save each other while trying to save her sisters and their world.
"...an angry tiger wasn’t something Camille wanted to deal with;"
Camille is a witch who works with her shifter friend at a wildlife charity, but she's never met her friend's brother, and she's about to find out why.
Something inside Jesse shifted the first time he saw a picture of his sister's best friend, but meeting her makes everything make sense.
This done in one quick read gives a glimpse of how witches and shifters each react to their fated ones, and view that connection, and serves as an introduction of Dana who is the newest member of the Paranormal Council.
Enjoyed it but didn’t love it. I really really wanted to, but the love felt a little rushed? I also wish there would’ve been more of a dive into the hero’s history as part of world building and giving him some more complexity beyond just weathered warrior meets mate and that’s it.
It just seemed like a rush through the plot with different characters being introduced and even the “big secret” he was so worried about that built up for several chapters turned out to not be a big deal.
Wouldn’t mind continuing the series, but not as invigorated to keep reading as I hoped I would.
Excellent book! A great start to a new series. This is the first book I've read by this author, and I loved it! Great world building- rich and lush and fascinating. Lana and Ras were wonderful characters and suited each other perfectly. Amazing chemistry and I loved their time together to see them bonding and strengthening their relationship. The story was an adventure, and I'm looking forward to book two! 5 stars. (P.S.- don't miss out on the bonus epilogue!)
