Arik Bane is lost. On the run from a tragic past that still haunts her, the royal wolf shifter is trapped between two to rise above or disappear. Fate nudges her toward the answer one snowy night when she saves the life of an omega mage and finds her heart bound to a path she least expected.
Ember Snow carries the weight of the world on her fragile shoulders. She's an omega with royal blood, a perfect pawn in a dangerous noble's quest for power. The night she tries to escape this fate, she falls into the arms of a fierce alpha wolf who saves her life with a mate-mark, tethering their souls.
An unexpected bond blooms as Arik and Ember find solace in each other's arms. But when family burdens and royal treachery crosses their paths, the pair must choose between their desire for what lies ahead and their allegiance to what came before.
Must Arik and Ember let fate slip between their fingers or will fated love defy all odds? This book is a ~113,000 word standalone sapphic romance. It was first published on Kindle Vella as a serial under the same title. It contains all 66 episodes. Other than line edits and some extended dialogue, the story remains the same.
Winter writes sapphic romance under the wings of fantasy, omegaverse, contemporary drama, or a blend of it all. Her tales are the always-angsty, achingly sweet, and steamy love dreams of a byronic lesbian who grew up reading alternate universe fanfiction. Love in a Hopeless Place is her favorite theme. She lives in Michigan where the weather does whatever it wants, regardless of season, and she has three dogs and a cat to spoil rotten. Welcome to her world.
This was...ok. Most of the book was at least. We spend the majority of the book just vibing with Arik and Ember. There is a lot of hanging out and recuperating. Actually, the entire book until the epilogue someone is recuperating from something. Whether that be emotional, physical, or spiritual/magical. It is very slow paced except for the few scenes of action that take place at key points of the story. Maybe because of this a lot of the storyline felt superfluous. There was a lot of fluff, and not a lot of substance for long stretches of the book. In fact, the last hundred pages or so, which were a huge drag already, could have been dropped or even just summed up in a few pages and not much would have been lost to be honest.
The "breakup" was pretty dumb. I mean, Arik is willing to tell Ember about being a convicted murderer as well as describe the worst day of her life to Ember, but can't tell her she's a royal? She can come out and admit they're fated mates, but can't tell her she's supposed to be the ruler of her clan or whatever? I don't buy it, and honestly if she'd said something the whole book could have been at least a hundred pages shorter.
I found the spicy scenes really lacking. They were also very hurried. Gyrating was used too often to describe things, as was slickness. With the whole omegaverse girlpenis thing, there were about a million ways these could have been very steamy, and unique scenes, but they weren't anything special.
Heartfelt Alpha-Omega love story of female fated mates. Touching, some good villains and sexy heroes. Not the best F/F Omegaverse I've read, and still a pretty good one. Needs editing.
This review is so painful to write because I wanted to like this book so much. Like I was so excited about it, that’s why I chose it to be my last read of 2024. But I just didn’t get into it the way I had hoped. Ember and Arik are cute together but the actual plot just fell so flat to me. I didn’t care for the major conflict being a single underwhelming villain and I thought since Arik was roaming they might roam together. Instead they stayed in the same place the entire time. It was just very slow, nothing really got my heart rate up, not even the spicy scenes.
I also felt like it was a bit unfocused. This could have easily been (a more thrilling) 300 pages if some of the fluff was cut out. Like why are we introducing new characters when there’s 5% left in the book and there are 3 chapters until the epilogue? There’s also just a lot of unnecessary rambling about every little thing the characters do and think (even if the thoughts and feelings have already been expressed more than once.)
The enjoyability of this was actually 2 stars for me BUT I’m giving an extra star because I went in with expectations and that’s never a good idea. And also because the writing is very descriptive. There was a lot of world building and details that helped it feel real! If the author had a good editor, I think this would have been a lot more solid. So I’m partially blaming my my disappointment on the editor or lack thereof.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was much more intricately psychological in terms of character development than I was not expecting. I enjoyed the romance and people finding their place in life. The only thing that’s a little strange for me is that I visualize descriptions while I’m reading and so how the characters are physically described is important for me to be able to really connect with the book.
In this book, the Wolf-shifter (Arik) is said to be 6’2 and the. mage(Ember) she falls in love with is 5’3. Some of the scenes in the book just don’t work with that, like standing while having sex with that type of height disparity. And I can’t see Ember balancing on her tiptoes to kiss Arik’s cheek. Even in 4 inch heels that were described initially with Ember at 5’7, she would be hard pressed to rise up on her tiptoes and kiss someone who is 6’2 on the cheek. It seems silly, but if you are someone who visualizes the books you read the way I do, descriptions need to make sense, especially when there are intricate sex scenes. Just something to think about if the author reads these! Otherwise waiting patiently for the sequel!!!
Super interesting read. The author obviously did a ton of work on world building behind the scenes and the reader gets to benefit. The characters are lovable, the villains are despicable, and the spice is spicy. I think my only complaint, and this isn't a common one for me, is that I felt like the ending took maybe a little long. That said, of ALL the issues to have, that one is so minor. I mean, how many books end too quickly and leave you wanting more? Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to someone looking for an Omegaverse fantasy book with some political dealings thrown in for good measure
I've read some of this author's work before and it was good, very good even, but this novel is absolutely next level for Thorn. It's a great story with solid character development and unconventional but enjoyable pacing. While romance tropes were used, they weren't relied on to progress the plot or character arcs, which made this story a riveting read as it wasn't predictable. The ending had some time jumps that I found both frustrating and necessary. Mostly frustrating because I wanted all the story in between, but necessary, because books do have to wrap up eventually apparently. According to some dumb rule someone somewhere made.
This is my first time reading anything from this author. It was nail-bitingly good. I liked both protagonists. Ember the omega who is kind, caring, and also an orphan. Arik who is the strong wolf Alpha, but who is also battling past trauma. There were moments in this story that had me on edge and I couldn’t put it down. If you enjoy a sapphic omegaverse with an alpha who would do anything to make sure you were safe, then this is a story for you. Check it out!
This book took me on an emotional roller coaster and had me a little worried during the read. Communication is key and that seems to be the cause of most of the issues during the book. I understand that everyone in the book had their reasons for why they didn't communicate.
It just made me frustrated with the characters. But I still really enjoyed the book.
Painful trauma, acceptance, rollercoaster emotions leads you to see our MFC's had to endure. ANGS with a slow burn with a few 🔥 steamy moments. Winter takes your breath away with heart pulpetation to the very end. Im so glad that some books came over from Vella to kindle. Winter, please don't ever stop.
I really liked Arik. Ember took longer to grow on. But as the story went you understand how she became who she was. The relationship itself was sweet. My only issue was it probably could have been a little shorter in places. A few scenes here and there could have trimmed but that was probably a result of being a cells first.
It is through the kindness of strangers that you stumble across your HEA. Being true and honorable and being the best person you can be, can heal you and the one you love. Leading you to a fated path of love and happiness.
A little choppy, with the stoic ex-military and the suppressed healer with abandonment issues, and secret royalty, and social climbing evil wannabe future in laws.
The omega can tell truth from lies, but that doesn’t help when people leave much unsaid, or assumed.
This is quite the enjoyable read. Interesting storyline throughout the book, with well placed drama, tension, and smiles. Was a little hesitant in the beginning, but realized that was more of a prologue than anything and needed down the road.
This book had a lot of detail and in depth storytelling. I enjoyed reading the F/F shifter aspect of the story. I was glad to see the MCs grow as characters throughout the book.
I felt like part of the story went slower than I am used to reading.
Truly enjoyed the story and dynamic between the two mcs. Ending left you still wondering what was more for them, which I liked. Didn't end on a permanent happy ending but a really good place.
This is a book that I read. Free Kindle Unlimited, was looking for steaminess, not sure that it actually delivered? (I can't remember now, but if not, what was the point of making it Omegaverse?)
