Every brushstroke a mystery, every canvas a lie. Love Painted in Lies is a laugh-out-loud feel-good British comedy that goes beyond the usual love story. Minty's return to Maida Vale isn't just about the chaos of raising twins, Old English Sheepdog shenanigans, school runs, and caring for her parents. Her life is shadowed by whispers of her involvement in a family art forgery ring that once duped the London elite.
The watchful eyes of the law linger on Minty; they're convinced she’s back to unearth a treasure trove of truths about a legendary missing painting. Minty must prove her new life is a genuine fresh start. But does she know more than she's revealing, or is her return an honest attempt to repaint her life’s canvas?
Amidst it all, a mysterious stranger strolls into her already turbulent world, bringing a hint of intrigue and the possibility of romance. Is he a brushstroke of fate or a shadow from her past? While juggling these challenges, she's also navigating the cutthroat world of London school admissions, where playing the church-attendance game is more about strategy and less about faith.
With gangsters on her heels and love at her door, Minty's journey is a hilarious adventure, where art and reality comically collide in Maida Vale. More than a rom-com—experience a vibrant mix of comedy, mystery, and captivating life twists.
Develop your own style, and don’t be afraid to go for it.”
Minty has returned to Maida Vale for a fresh start even though her life is shadowed by whispers of a family art forgery ring that once duped the London elite. But the watchful eyes of the law linger on Minty, convinced she is back to unearth a treasure trove of truths about a legendary missing painting. While navigating the chaos of raising twins, caring for her parents, and juggling her turbulent world with the possibility of romance, Minty’s life is a comical collision of art and reality.
Love Painted in Lies is a blend of mystery and humour. I loved how relatable Minty is as a woman juggling different roles as she strives to find balance in her crazy life. When love comes knocking, she must choose how much of this madness is safe to reveal before he decides to run.
The part about her evolution into a con is revealed gradually through flashbacks. This adds an exciting mystery to the plot with twists that can give some of the best suspense-thrillers a run for their money.
The essence of the story comes from Minty’s life at home and her relationship with her parents, children, and siblings. The everyday mayhem not only creates some uniquely hilarious situations but also makes you empathise with the characters and their struggles.
Drama, desire, and disaster join hands in this story that’s great as a holiday read, a pick-me-up, or as your companion for a lazy weekend. Nothing can hold you back from devouring it once you sink your teeth in.

I read one of the author’s earlier books, “Holly’s Inbox” & absolutely enjoyed it. When I was given a chance to read their latest book of course I took it!
It took me a bit to get into the story but once I did I throughly enjoyed it! Minty the female main character was very relatable. Dealing with life in general, her family & entering a possible new relationship. Oh did I mention she’s an ex con with a talent for replicating famous paintings? Which has come back to haunt her.
The bits of humor through the book was on point & I chuckled throughout my time reading it :)
I received a free copy of this book via Story Origin & this is my honest review.
Love Painted in Lies: A Maida Vale Tale tells the story of a determined and compassionate woman in her mid-thirties who engaged in art forgery in her youth and now faces the consequences of her past actions.
It took me a while to get into the story, to be honest, as the character of protagonist Minty, and the narrative here, is quite quirky and focuses more on Minty’s current day-to-day which only really becomes interesting once the full picture is set. Ms. Denham chooses to slowly reveal the mystery of what’s gone on before as the pages progress in the opening 1/3 of the novel. Stick with it, as once I was into the story, I found it thoroughly enjoyable and Minty became, in fact, highly relatable as she navigates life, family, gangsters, police, and a potential new relationship.
The humor sprinkled throughout the book was largely hits, and I found myself chuckling along as I read. Minty’s ability to juggle family and personal relationships amidst a dangerous criminal underworld and police scrutiny is both amusing and endearing. Her quirky character is most evident in her interactions with family members, particularly her children and elderly parents, who are all nuts! Yet, Holly Denham doesn't shy away here from exploring heavier themes like self-acceptance, loss, and overcoming bullying.
Once the story takes off, you’ll likely find yourself immersed into Minty's chaotic world, find moments of genuine laughter that are skillfully balanced with touching portrayals of everyday family life. If you, at first, find the extravagance of painting, gangsters, and Minty’s past a little exaggerated, don’t worry—just go with it, I suggest. It’s all undeniably enjoyable, with a style that is simple and whimsical, creating a delightful and all-too-quick read.
Thank you to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this as an ARC.
My first impression of this book was - chaotic... but once I started to figure out Minty's past, it became hilarious, and chaotic... Through it all Minty is human and relatable... I also felt outraged for Minty, the poor woman was really trying so hard, and nobody, absolutely nobody seemed to want to let her catch a break... That's how involved I got with reading this book. This book also stood out for me because with the huge dose of humour was so much of suspense... I'm a history of fine arts student and that made the art forgery / missing painting angle even more interesting...
Now I've got to go back and read the author's earlier books.
So so funny. I laughed out loud a few times. The book presents a strong-minded but very caring woman in her mid-thirties who did some art forgeries in her youth and whose past finally seems to catch up with her.
How she interacts with the people in her life while dealing with the criminal underworld and simultaneously the police is hilarious. Her unique character shines mostly through her relationships with her family, especially with her kids and aging parents, as well as her love interest. However, there are also more serious topics like dealing with being different, grievance, and bullying.
While the first two-thirds mostly portrayed the MC’s daily life, the last third was more of a show-down adventure. It's still good but less unique than the beginning.
Loved it! At first it was a bit jumpy, but then I got the hang of it and couldn’t put it down. I read 60% of the book in one sitting! Holly is a great writer and this book was so much fun to read. I loved her 2 prior books and was so excited to see that she had written another one. It did not disappoint and I was kinda bummed when I was done because I wanted to keep reading! Can’t wait for her next book! Thanks to the author for the advanced free copy- I am leaving this honest review voluntarily! :)
I found the book enjoyable to read. I loved the character Minty - she made me laugh. It was definitely and easy enjoyable read. I love an easy to read chick lit type book which is definitely what I would class this as. Recommended for anyone fancying an something they can enjoy with a glass of wine 🍷 😉.

3 ⭐️ ‘s: Love Painted in Lies follows Minty, a single mother of twins and a former art forger, as she returns to Maida Vale in hopes of a fresh start. But her past isn’t far behind, especially when local law enforcement starts watching her every move. With a touch of romance, a lighthearted mystery, and plenty of eccentric chaos, Minty’s journey unfolds through present-day misadventures and fragmented flashbacks that slowly reveal the truth behind her tangled past.
I enjoyed this book, but the writing style took some getting used to. It felt a bit jumpy and disjointed at first, which made it hard to connect with the story or characters early on. I found myself enjoying the quirky tone and British humor throughout the book and made me miss my days living in London!
Minty is a messy, flawed, and unpredictable character—but that’s also what made her compelling at times. Her interactions with her aging parents and wild kids were a highlight, and there were a few genuine laugh-out-loud moments. This is definitely a suspend your disbelief novel, but as long as you take it as face value, it’s an enjoyable read.
Overall, Love Painted in Lies is a light, witty, and entertaining read that is perfect for a vacation!

Loved this book so much, I did not want to finish reading it!
Fun novel which follows a charismatic Minty, (mum/artist/ex-con), been chased by gangsters and the police, whilst navigating with ailing parents, twins (the Harries) and complicated relationships.
The story unfolds as the skeletons from Minty’s past knock on her door, whilst attempting to restart a new life for herself and children in Maida Vale. Minty has recently moved in with her parents, as her mother is suffering from dementia, when gangsters coerce her on completing a new forgery and the police open’s a new investigation against her.
The author skillfully takes you on a journey where you discover Minty’s past and how she and her siblings (who she protects), created an art forgery ring, was imprisoned and silently endures judgment from everyone she meets. A flashback to her married life, comical husband’s death, but ultimately discovering his unfaithfulness, challenges Minty to keep-up-appearances and the truth, from her family.
Chaos ensues when the Harries are bullied in school and Minty endevours to befriend a pompous group of school mum’s and their children, to stumble upon critique and lack of empathy from the community.
In the midst of the enveloping drama, she meets Devon, a young gym instructor and they commence a quirky relationship, which leads to romance, when a sudden twist of events, questions his motives.
Minty, like her family and everyone we meet in the novel isn’t perfect, but they are real, which makes an endearing story of self-acceptance in the muddled world we live in. Minty is very relatable and you will fall in love with her sense of humor and empathy for the people she loves.
Minty attempts to overcome complicated scenarios with a sense of humor, to relieve the pain from the people she loves. Will she though? Best that you find out in this utterly brilliant novel, which will have you laughing out loud, whilst pulling your heart strings.
Holly Denham, thank you very much for writing such a wonderful novel. I smile every time I see spinach!
I really enjoyed this book and despite being busy with work and life in general read it very quickly as I didn’t want to put it down once I’d picked it up.
The characters were likeable and funny with the chaotic lives that made them very like many of us, though they also had their secret past and the main character of Minty was no exception.
Initially this past wasn’t mentioned so it starts as a slow paced easy read but as you get into it, it becomes apparent that there’s a lot more to the story.
The story has a dual timeline in places in order to bring in the ‘back story’ and explain the past.
Some of the events in this book are really funny and almost farcical in what happens. Unfortunately, as I was reading in a public place I had to keep my laughter in but I couldn’t help but laugh when I was reading it at home. I can often visualise the action when I read (at least I can on many books, though not all) and this was one of them that made a very funny visualisation especially towards the end.
Loved it.

I haven't laughed this much reading a book in a long time. Such a brilliant read. Full of twist and turns, laughter and emotion. An absolute must read. Can't think of a better way to make yourself feel good. Perfect as a holiday read or something to cheer you up on a rainy day. Can't wait to read more by Holly Denham.
This book was so funny. There were so many disasters and you could almost anticipate them happening. I could really relate to Minty as a mum, trying to juggle everything, parenting, parents, dogs, finding a job, relationships. Definitely worth a read, if you want something light hearted and something to make you smile. Can't wait to see what Holly writes next.
This book was amazing after a long time i read something like this. It's all about a woman named Minty and her adventures, twisted life, mystery and unique... When you start you will stick the story.. It's about her life , her relationship and art of realistic life... It was really warmth book for me..I love this.. Muhhhh
In “Love Painted in Lies” we follow Minty returning to the small town of Maida Vale, juggling the chaos of raising twins and caring for her parents, all while hiding from whispers of her family’s art forgery past. As the law grows suspicions of her intentions, Minty must navigate her tumultuous life, where a stranger brings both intrigue and potential romance. With gangsters chasing her and secrets waiting to be uncovered, Minty’s journey becomes a hilarious blend of comedy and mistery, that appeals to every single reader out there.
Personally, I see “Love Painted in Lies” as the perfect example of a good story with some great (UK) banter, and let me say, it’s the banter that elevates the narrative and will linger long after the last page is turned! So, if you’re looking for you’re next mystery-comedy-romance read, look no further, and check out “Love Painted in Lies” by Holly Denham.
Really fun book to read. Really enjoyed how the author engaged the reader from the start and although the title doesn’t give much to the type of read, it is well worth your time. A great beach read or book to gift!
Yes, this is a really funny book in which disaster after disaster sends the reader hurtling towards a very satisfying wrap-up. The characters and the situations they find themselves in are often hysterical and the author creates a real sense of life through the dialogue. But this book also captures an incredibly important message about inclusion - how different we all are and how labelling and judging can get in the way of living. I found parts of this book incredibly sad as the experiences of someone “different” struggled to get along within the rails of “normal” expectations. So, yes, people can read it for a genuine laugh but I also hope people will take a moment to reflect on inclusion, difference and judgement,
I was really excited to read this book from Holly Denham after loving her Holly's Inbox series. I have to say the book started quite slowly for me, there seemed to be not a lot happening and too many characters.
Once it got going it was a pleasure to be immersed into the chaotic world of Minty. There were some genuine laugh out loud moments and it was nicely balanced with some genuinely touching moments when dealing with every day family life.
I finished the book wanting to know what Minty and co were up to now, so the characters have definitely left a lasting impression.
I received an advanced review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Who wouldn’t fall in love with Minty Pops? Such a fun book, crazy characters but with a real life vein running through it with some lovely insights in between the laugh aloud moments.
The authors previous works are pride of place on my bookshelf, they have survived several previous culls for space and remain a go to for a re read. When I saw a new book by this fabulous author I was over joyed! This book is fantastic and does not disappoint. Quintessentially English and an absolutely joy to read. The plot is wickedly twisty supplemented by a cast of characters bringing comedy, romance and jeopardy into the story. Paddington and Muffin are just the cherry on top of a delicious book bun. Loved it! More please.
Minty’s return to Maida Vale and raising her twins . Church attendance weighs up odds of the kids schooling . Go figure. Everyone has eyes on her following the forgery ring , convinced she knows where a legendary missing painting is at . She just wants a genuine start and to repaint her life’s canvas . A welcome stranger lurks in the shadows but is he friend or foe? Which way does she go? Life’s not a bed of roses but for this artist , life’s canvas just got clearer.. great writing, immersive and fun read. I loved every page .
Love painted in lies was such a fun read! The writing style was very cool and unique. The main character was so relatable it made the experience of reading this book so much better. Definitely recommend this book if you’re looking for a fun and entertaining read!

This is a somewhat curious story and the plot is interwoven between romance, secrets, the protagonist's past and the author does a great job mixing these elements and making them work in an excellent way in addition to the touches of humor that makes it a fun read.
The characters are undoubtedly quite interesting and I like that they are more complex than they seem, in addition to the fact that you gradually discover the protagonist's past and everything that it entails for her to face everything that persecutes her while she tries to fix her life. present.
Without a doubt a very interesting book with a good development that keeps you hooked and with memorable characters and very fun to read.

The Blurb : Love Painted in Lies is a laugh-out-loud feel-good comedy romp. Her life is shadowed by whispers of her involvement in a family art forgery ring that once duped the London elite. With gangsters on her heels and love at her door, Minty’s journey is a hilarious adventure, where art and reality comically collide in Maida Vale.
My Thoughts : We meet Minty who is an artist, or otherwise known as a con artist. After her husband suddenly dies she moves back into her parents house with her twins, Harriet and Harry. Her parents arnt well as her dad has some hip trouble and her mum has dementia. Things arent all honey as Minty’s past dealings with gangsters, the police and some time in jail when her and her siblings were part of an art forgery ring forging paintings. All of this soon starts to catch up with her. Can Minty escape her past or is it all about to catch up with her!?. This took me a while to get into the story as there is a lot going on and also a lot of Characters to keep track of, so id have to go back and see who was who. The story is a feel good fun read with lots of laugh out loud moments. Holly Denham develops the characters well and I really enjoyed reading about the events from 10 years ago aswell as the goings on in the present day.
Years ago, I read a quirky, fun book called Holly's Inbox, a story told through a series of emails. It was funny, at times ridiculous, and an all around good time. When I discovered that she'd written a new novel, I jumped at the chance to read and review it.
Love Painted in Lies is just as hilarious as Holly's Inbox had been, but a more grown up, adult novel about love, life, kids, and dogs. It's still very much recognizable as the same author, but with a bit of maturity. Which, honestly, is something I needed.
I could relate to Minty in a lot of ways. We both have two kids, too many animals to count, and we both lost our husbands way too young. And while I'm not a felon, I could still empathize with the things she went through, both in her past and in her present. Watching her deal with every day life, her aging parents, her overbearing siblings, and still have enough left over to contemplate a new relationship? It was inspiring on a certain level, since it's more than I've thought about in the last four years.
Everything surrounding the painting, the gangsters, and her past, was over the top and ridiculous, but by god it was fun. I can see how she could have gotten caught up in it all as a young person, too. The attention, the money, the ease with which she seemed to be able to do it all, it'd have been very tempting, for sure. Now, as a reformed adult, her attempts to prove she's turned over a new leaf are also pretty over the top, but sometimes you have to be a little OTT when you have kids. I think it's a condition that comes with motherhood, honestly.
I laughed so hard, so many times while reading this. Ms. Denham's writing style is easy and light, making for a quick and enjoyable read. I devoured the book pretty quickly and loved every minute of it. It'd be fun to see what Minty and her family are up to in a future book. Because I have a feeling that she won't be able to stay out of trouble for long.
*Thanks to the author and the publisher for a copy of this novel in exchange for a fair review.
Holly Denham’s Love Painted in Lies is a delightful blend of mystery, humour, and heart that draws you into the chaotic, colourful life of Minty - a woman returning to Maida Vale to piece together her life under the lingering shadow of her family’s scandalous past.
Whispers of a family-run art forgery ring and a legendary missing painting swirl around Minty, and the watchful eyes of the law are convinced she’s back to unearth long-buried secrets.
But Minty has more immediate chaos to juggle: raising twins, caring for her aging parents, managing sibling dynamics, and navigating the possibility of romance amidst all the madness.
Minty is such a relatable, engaging protagonist.
Her struggle to juggle and balance her many roles while facing the weight of her family’s notorious history makes her both sympathetic and utterly human.
When love begins to enter her life, it adds another layer of complexity, as Minty must decide how much of her chaotic world to reveal without scaring him off.
The gradual revelation of Minty’s family’s con artist history through flashbacks adds a compelling layer of suspense to the plot.
Denham masterfully weaves these elements into the story, creating twists and turns that rival some of the best suspense thrillers.
Yet the book never loses its humour or its heart, making it as entertaining as it is intriguing.
The true charm of Love Painted in Lies lies in its exploration of family and the everyday mayhem of life at home.
Minty’s relationships with her parents, children, and siblings are filled with warmth, humour, and the kind of chaos that’s instantly relatable.
These moments not only create laugh-out-loud situations but also ground the story in genuine emotion, making you care deeply for the characters and their struggles.
Packed with drama, desire, and disaster, Love Painted in Lies is perfect as a holiday read, a pick-me-up, or a companion for a lazy weekend.
Once you dive in, you won’t want to put it down.
Holly Denham has created a story that’s as compelling as it is entertaining, leaving readers eager for more.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely love the other two novels by Holly Denham (Holly's Inbox and Holly's Inbox: Scandal in the City). I was so disappointed when I never saw other novels by Holly. Last month Holly sent me an email letting me know she had a new book out, Love Painted in Lies: A Maida Vale Tale. I was so excited and was told it is not like her other two books. True......but it was another 5-StarL Must Read book!
I couldn't get enough of Minty and her parents. I was laughing out loud at some of the chaos that was always going on. Crickety - the owls were hilarious! As Minty is avoiding gangsters and the police she seems to always skirt around them we learn about her life and all the colorful characters. She also falls for a guy who I loved, than didn't and in the end adored him. He just got who Minty was and accepted her family.
If you are looking for a laugh out loud book with an exciting plot (completely different than others I have been reading) than you MUST read Love Painted in Lies: A Maida Vale Tale. Purchase it now (free on KindleUnlimited) and you will not be disappointed, and get ready to roll around laughing. ESPINACAS!!!
My favorite characters: Minty - I want her as my BFF! She is hilarious (and artistic). The Harries - Minty's twins are too funny. Thinking of calling my twins The Ablies (Abbie and Allie). Ned - I want to be friends with this quirky person who would make me laugh. Minty's parents - I just want to hug them as we love life together and look at owls. Devon (aka Craig or Barry) - The guy that comes through in the end when it really counts.
