A God-fearing man. A God-seeking woman. For Sam Lewis and Lexa Clarke, it proves a combustible combination. Lexa Clarke signs up for a TeamWork Missions summer assignment expecting adventure in a far-off, exotic country. Instead, she's sent to sweltering San Antonio to help rebuild homes destroyed by sudden flooding. She survives the four-hour bus trip from Houston, dust in the lungs, a flat tire, a tool-throwing incident and a spitting goat - not to mention an inquisition from a distractingly handsome cowboy - all before reaching the work camp. TeamWork director Sam Lewis isn't sure what to think of his newest volunteer. She's feisty, witty, and incredibly pretty, but looks more prepared to board a cruise ship than build houses. Burned by a past betrayal, he's got a job to do, a reputation to uphold. Sam can't afford to be distracted by a woman who attracts animals, defies his rules, finds trouble at every turn and questions God's purpose. But when she tumbles from the top beam of one of the houses into his arms, Sam suspects his life will never be the same.
During their weeks together in the TeamWork camp, Sam and Lexa learn the power of forgiveness and healing. Enduring a chain of incidents which challenge their faith, trust and growing relationship, they look to the Lord for guidance as together they discover a love greater than either could ever imagine. At the end of the eight-week work camp, Sam is committed to a year-long, dangerous overseas mission for TeamWork. Can Lexa trust the Lord enough to let him go? Will Sam safely return and keep his promise to meet her at the Alamo? You'll keep turning the pages of this sweeping romantic adventure.
With great characters, plenty of humor, enough emotion to make you shed a tear or two, and an ending that'll have you cheering, Awakening will leave you breathless. Hold on tight. The adventures of Lewis and Clarke have only just begun!

Absolutely - captivating, charming, realistic, funny, romantic and ... everything!!!
Honestly I liked it so much that I am at loss with words, I feel like retelling each episode and tell you how it affected me (like i did to my poor husband) but I don't want to spoil it for you. Well here it is- the book is long (which you are NOT going to notice after you start reading) and it is so "sinfully" interesting and captivating and emotion involving that if you start reading it, it will take all your sleep away, so if you are planing on getting it to just read a few minutes before sleep - don't fool yourself, after the first chapter you won't be able to put it down much less sleep! So, just get some strong coffee and brace yourself for an adventure. I really liked their banter on the lines and the advises in between the lines. Here is Lexa that hasn't trusted no one much less God since she was eight-years-old, but the is hungry to find a way to make a difference in peoples lives (which we should be for God to be able to use us in the best way possible)... and here is Sam who was christian all his life but because of it became too judgmental and almost interrupted God's plan to use Lexa in Howard's and Shelly's lives as well as in bringing healing to Sam himself. We, life-long believers sometimes try too hard to prove our hunger to save non-Christians that we push them the opposite way without realizing it. This book is not just a great love story but also an awesome example of how new believers can teach us more then we teach them. I am going to say again that this book is awesome and totally hit my Fave-list. I recommend it to all - please read it, enjoy it, and believe it because it is based on a true love story..
Full of quirky characters, romance, and laughs this novel by JoAnn Durgin is also a breath of fresh air because of its unique storyline.
This story made me smile, frown, and have a weird-looking mixture of a two. Not only a romance story, this book also talks about the bigger romance between us and God. This book has everything good which makes me urge you to read this.
I REALLY wanted to be able to give this book 5 stars, but I can't. So sorry...
As a Christian, and a hopeless romantic, I love supporting Christian authors. I applaud their efforts, as writing is no easy task. The main story line was believable. However, I saw too many cliches things that didn't add, plot twists that were questionable and such to be able to fully get behind this book. 3 stars is NOT an indicator that I hated the book. It just means I wasn't swayed from neutral into like or love.
Corny and trite were the Lewis and Clarke joke, the Mary and Joseph quip, and the yellow rose of Texas implication. Maybe it's simply because I personally, would have been insulted if a man who professed his love for me bought yellow roses, but since they are known to symbolize "friendship", I thought it was odd. The only logical rose color for a man in love, unless he KNOWS yellow is the woman's favorite color is red...the color of passion. Also, while I totally understand how difficult situations can get while dating, and in love, it was unbelievable that right after witnessing to someone, that Lexa was willing to take a roll in the dirt with Sam. Equally as unbelievable is that someone as level headed as Sam fell into that so much that Lexa had to call him off.
I read on Goodreads after someone else said that they found the last plot twist concerning Sheila unbelievable, a comment from the author that the person must not have read the story well, to not have caught that Sheila was hiding something early in the story. Wrong! Sorry, but I'm a VERY good reader. While Sheila was played as shy, with a stutter, she was not portrayed as a woman who was fearful, or hiding a secret. I have several shy friends who are simply more comfortable with a book, than they are with people. Her character simply was not developed enough for the reader to believe this twist. It was only AFTER we got the news that her husband was an ex con that we believed something could happen. Never saw a hint that she had a child, either, until revealed. Yes, it was mentioned that Lexa "thought" Sheila looked frightened, and afraid of her shadow, but we never saw proof, or evidence of this.
I also had a rough time believing that Sam never confronted Josh about Shelby or Josh's addiction, or that TeamWork thought it wise to hide someone out from an ex convict. Again...I really wished I had liked this story more. Since I bought the 3 story boxed set, and have 2 more stories to read, I'm really hoping I like the other 2 books more.
While it's really sweet that the author based the hero and heroine on her husband and herself, I wish the reader had not been told that, until maybe AFTER the story, in a side note, as I felt almost like an interloper. I realize the story is fiction with the characters merely based on them, but it still felt odd. I had also seen photos of them on Joann's site, to I instantly had pictures of Joann and her husband in my head instead of the character's descriptions.
One last thing...While I wholeheartedly applaud the author for using scripture, and for stating the plan of salvation, I wonder if she understands that only Christians will read this book, since it has "A Christian Romance" in it's title.
I do wish only the best for this author, and hope continued success for her writing endeavors.
Title: AWAKENING Author: JoAnn Durgin Publisher: Torn Veil Books November 2010 ISBN: 978-1-926712-56-7 Genre: Inspirational/contemporary romance
Lexa Clarke signs up for a TeamWork Missions assignment, expecting to be assigned to some faraway, exotic land. Instead, she’s assigned to sweltering San Antonio, Texas, to help rebuild homes destroyed by floods. But on the way there with handsome blue eyed Sam Lewis, she is accosted by dusty roads, a flat tire, a spitting goat, and more. Not only that, but Sam seems the master of inquisitions.
Sam is the director of the TeamWork project. He’s not really trying to infuriate the pretty, feisty and witty Lexa, he’s just trying to figure out where to assign her on the job site. She seems to know her way around numbers, but she doesn’t seem to know which end of the hammer is up.
Lexa defies Sam at every turn and appears that she might be more at home on a cruise ship than a construction site. A chain of incidents challenge their faith and their relationship.
AWAKENING is the debut novel by JoAnn Durgin. Ms. Durgin is a master at bringing the scene to life. I could taste the dust, and almost could feel my throat closing along with the characters. I could feel the goat spittle along with the character. The writing is witty, sarcastic, and fresh.
I really liked Ms. Durgin’s play on “Lewis and Clarke” adventures, and she says in her author notes that this story is loosely based on her own romance with her husband. I enjoyed reading AWAKENING and look forward to many more books by this talented author. $12.99. 247 pages.
Wow! I enjoyed this book so much. It took me longer to finish than I expected because I was just so busy, but I made sure I read this before falling asleep at night. It just made my sleep that much more pleasant. I quickly fell in love with the characters because there was so much to relate with Lexa... and who wouldn't fall in love with Sam? I mean he's a tall, handsome cowboy... you don't need much more than that. =) I thought this was very well written. There were quite a few parts in the book that had me down right laughing out loud... Sam discovering Lexa's novel under her pillow for one! I was fortunate enough to win JoAnn's novels from a contest held last october. I can't wait to continue on this journey with Sam and Lexa!
That’s the only way I know how to sum up JoAnn Durgin’s Awakening. Her witty sense of humor shines in the banter between Sam Lewis and Lexa Clarke, two characters I know you’ll love getting to know. This book is a refreshing read that will have you believing TeamWork is a real organization . . . and you’ll want to join their next mission!
Lexa Clarke may be running from her past, but it might just catch up to her while she’s helping as a volunteer for a two-month summer mission with TeamWork. As she assists in rebuilding houses destroyed by flooding in San Antonio, trouble seems to follow her around in all shapes and sizes. Sam Lewis quickly realizes he’s got to keep his eye on Miss Lexa Clarke if he’s to keep trouble from interrupting his work as director of this TeamWork mission. Watching the petite woman with the long blonde braid proves to be a challenge worth accepting, even if it means facing his own haunting past. Will Sam and Lexa let the problems they’ve never dealt with drive a wedge between them as they discover a passion for serving the Lord in new ways? What will become of the TeamWork group when trouble turns combustible?
Sam tells Lexa in chapter two, “I’m saying He [God] allowed it to happen. He has His reasons. It’s up to us to try and figure out what He’s trying to tell us.” It’s neat to see how Sam’s and Lexa’s differing levels of faith play such huge roles in their lives during their work with TeamWork and in the other parts of their lives, as well. Each character has their own trials to face, and they depend on their faith in God in such unique ways that it really does inspire the reader to take a good look at their own faith life and reconsider where they are with God. Are we following His will for our lives? Are we making a positive difference in the world around us? Is there something more we can do to better serve the God who loves us so completely? Is there something from our past that we need to face in order to be a vessel God can use to spread His message?
Awakening is a book worth reading for its sense of adventure, plot twists, witty humor and a glimpse at what it means to live what you believe. It’s the first in JoAnn Durgin’s The Lewis Legacy Series. I’m eager to add to my collection, and I have a feeling you will be too, after reading this first adventure. JoAnn sure has a knack for storytelling, and her pacing is spot-on. Just when I thought everything was wrapped up, she brought back yet one more loose end . . . and another one . . . and left me wanting to read the second book in the series to find out what adventure the TeamWork crew will find themselves in on their next mission.
Thank you, JoAnn, for sending me a complimentary copy of Awakening for my honest review. I enjoyed it immensely and hope those reading this will also find a little adventure when they pick up their copy of Awakening.
I so loved this book! Kept you going once you started reading. Good clean romance. A lot of action between Sam and Lexa. Believe both are saved but one of the characters has fallen back due to things in their life. It's a great read can't wait to read the next one. I loved the Godly view in this book.
A refreshing romance between two people and their walk with the Lord
This was a refreshing difference than the usual guy meets girl. Guy sweeps girl off her feet then, All the sexual descriptions in between. Serve the Lord and seek His guidance for everything in life and it’ll be alright, as my aunt used to say
Lexa Clarke is a beautiful, petite and feisty young woman who is impulsive, headstrong and in need of change in her life. Looking for a way to heal from a broken relationship, and hoping for some adventure, Lexa volunteers for a summer session in a Christian work camp. Her dream of working in some exotic foreign country is quashed upon discovering she will be helping rebuild homes destroyed by flooding in a remote area of Texas.
A tall, dark and handsome cowboy, Sam Lewis is the director of the TeamWork Mission. Self-assured and a solid leader, Sam's honesty and integrity intimidate Lexa but her feisty personality proves she can hold her own. Their sparring leads to flirting, and Sam and Lexa learn some important lessons from each other as their attraction for one another is "awakened" during their time spent together in the work camp. Sam's strong faith dominates his very essence to the point that Lexa finds it difficult to believe he can be so confident in his assurance of God's love. Lexa feels like an imposter among the lifelong Christians in the work camp.
The differences between the main characters is staggering, and sparks fly! A lot of teasing, a little flirting, and concern in Sam's mind regarding Lexa's weak spiritual walk make for interesting reading. Strong Christians can be intimidating and appear conceited to one who is new in the faith walk, and that example is put to good use. The author has created a strong story of differences overcome through examples of patience, tolerance and prayer. Christian growth and sizzling romance are highlights in this story of Sam and Lexa. A large dose of wit and spunk is included between the main characters. Numerous plots and subplots intertwine to create a page-turning adventure including mystery, challenge, compassion and romance. If you enjoy Christian Romance you'll love Awakening!
I received a copy of this book from the author, having won the book in a contest. All opinions expressed in this review are my own, and no monetary compensation was received for this review.
Lexa Clark meets her match in Sam Lewis. He's handsome, direct, and god-fearing to the core. From the moment he gives her a ride to the 8-week Team Work Mission camp, Lexa is intrigued by the attractive camp director.
Sam immediately notices there is something different about Lexa. Not only is she beautiful, but she is full of "spice". She's also determined to get herself into difficult situations due to her stubborn nature. He wonders what the extent of her relationship with the Lord is, along with the circumstances that have brought Lexa to his camp. Sparks fly, but they aren't caused by the hot San Antonio weather. Sam and Lexa - Lewis and Clark - are a dynamic duo in every way. At times, they are like oil and water, arguing over deep theological issues or past history, but at other times they fit together perfectly. It's in those times that we see something beautiful forming.
Lexa and Sam don't have it easy though. Strange things are happening at the camp and Lexa may be the key piece in solving the mystery. Can they make it though the 8-week camp without mishap? Will they find something even more beautiful together on other other side?
As I read this book, I reflected back to my own experience on a mission trip to Ensenada, Mexico many years go. I could relate to a few of the situations, especially when Lexa finds joy in working with less fortunate school-aged children. I loved the dynamic relationship between Sam and Lexa. There were times when I was angry with Lexa for how she acted or with Sam for something he would say, but those issues only make the characters more believable. I love how real Sam and Lexa are.
I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in a fun, spark-flying romantic novel that touches on the heart of service and the dedication we all have to waiting on the Lords timing.
Being more used to suspense or romantic historicals, I wasn’t sure if a Christian romance novel in its truest sense would hold my interest. But I was delighted with the calibre of JoAnn Durgin’s Awakening, and her story’s ability to enthral me with romance alone. And the romance in this contemporary story is Romantic with a capital “R”. I think I even blushed several times—in a good way.
But God is the author of romance, and this novel succeeds in delivering kisses as steamy as those in the Song of Solomon.
Lexa Clarke is on her way by bus to San Antonio Texas to work for several months at a Team Work mission that builds houses for those less fortunate. From the moment she meets the mission leader, Sam Lewis, Lexa’s sensual and romantic needs are awakened. But so is her spirit.
This is the crux of the matter for Christian readers. The heart and body finds its complete fulfillment when the soul is not neglected. And tall handsome Sam, who looks like he could have stepped off the cover of one of the steamy secular romance novels that Lexa used to read, swept me off my feet too.
But what I found so different about Awakenings is the lack of embarrassment the author has in her dialogue. Not the romantic dialogue, but the real conversations that hooked me—conversations that Christian men and women actually have on subjects such as purity and sexuality while wanting to be the person God wants them to be.
The setting of San Antonio also gave me a buzz. And for this mystery lover, there was a bit of mystery towards the end. On another positive note—I didn’t feel any sense of formula with this story, but realism, so sometimes the pacing is a bit different from formulaic novels.
But this is the kind of romance I used to dream for myself when I was young and unmarried, and that which I used to pray for my now married daughter.
When I won the contest for a free copy of Joann Durgin’s Awakening, I was delighted, of course. And curious.
Now I have to buy the next book in the series!
I’m not really that much into romance. Rather, I like a touch of romance in a story that is about something else entirely.
But Joann’s book enchanted me.
In TeamWork, she has created a mini-world that I’d like to visit. I’d especially like to attend one of the bonfires. Maybe they’ll even have Smores for me on the night of my visit.
Lexa moves from doing the Christian thing for show, to a true faith.
Sam moves from hurt to healing. I won’t put a spoiler here.
Of course, they move toward each other in the process.
Joann’s writing is character-driven, and shows that her characters are real to her. Thus, she can make them real to the reader. There were parts where I was frightened, and parts where I was cheering, and parts where I was delighted. (I’ll let you discover those for yourself.)
Even the traditional, romantic, her-heart-fluttered parts made me smile. They were sweet and well-done, rather than being purple prose. And regardless of my prejudices, there is, after all, definitely a place in life for romance.
All I had to do was read the blurb for "Awakening" to know that it was going in my must-read pile. I finished this book rather quickly, as I was unable to put it down. The plot is fantastic, the characters memorable, and the scenarios realistic. I could easily see why this has become one of the most popular books in contemporary Christian fiction.
JoAnn Durgin takes the reader inside the thoughts, emotions, and lives of Lexa Clarke and Sam Lewis in a way that made me care about the characters and the struggles they faced. She added doses of humor at just the right time, and I loved how she did a play on the last names of Lewis and Clarke.
Just when I thought I knew what was going to happen next, the book took another twist and turn, which made "Awakening" an enjoyable read and anything but predictable.
I can't say enough good things about this book, and I highly recommend readers to pick it up and savor the well-written words found on each page. I am eagerly looking forward to JoAnn Durgin's next book, "Second Time Around."
I wanted to like this book, but I put it down halfway through. It had a lot of potential, and perhaps future books by the author have a better flow and more interactions I'd find more plausible, however this book didn't. I found the emotional responses from the H/h irrational and almost jarring to the storyline. I continually found myself sitting with a quizzical expression on my face trying to understand why a character responded in the way they did. It just didn't ring true to me.
It also seemed like the book could've stood some stronger editing. Repeatedly I felt like the author used 5 words to describe something when she could've used 1 or 2; I felt it bogs the story down.
I really wanted to like this book (especially since I own the next 2 as well)... perhaps I'll try it again sometime later.
I know a lot of folks clearly liked the book, which is wonderful. Reviews are simply the readers' opinions. Others may completely overlook the things I struggled with, but I personally wasn't able to.
Sometimes, the Lord sends us on a mission to help others, when God actually plans to do a work in our own life. Lexa’s concept of what this trip would be was not the same as God’s plan, however, God can use us in spite of our preconceived ideas. This book jumps right into an engaging story line that keeps you turning the pages. I enjoyed the obvious attraction of the main characters and watching that attraction grow into a relationship that is filled with romance and passion, as well as humor. The deep spiritual journeys of the characters give the story great depth filled with opportunity for God to speak to your heart. The struggles the characters face are very real to life. I appreciate the way Mrs. Durgin’s writing presents true-to-life struggles and emotions that are very real to the Christian walk, while offering an outcome that honors the Lord. I look forward to following Sam and Lexa’s story through the remainder of the Lewis Legacy Series.
Loved this book! This was the first book of Ms. Durgin's, and I'm hooked. I'm pretty picky when it comes to reading romance (I'm more of a suspense girl), so I actually waited a short time after receiving this book to start. (Won a free copy of any one of her books, thanks again JoAnn Durgin!
Even though it took me longer to read, due to increased work schedule, I had a hard time putting it down. The story pulled me in right away. The characters were awesome, story line totally realistic, and so well written I could just see what was happening in my mind. I'm heading to Amazon to order the next book in the series!
Loved this book. I think it's refreshing to read a story where the attraction is definitely there and sizzling, but where the glory and love of God also resides. What made this book wonderful in my humble opinion would be the love of the lead characters, Sam and Lexa, for the Lord, but most importantly, the love of the Lord for them and everybody else. It also showed God's faithfulness in every trial and situation.
I've been reading a lot of mystery and suspense lately so romance was a refreshing change! This had action in it also and very romantic! I'll be recommending this to friends who prefer more than a kiss ;) ( but clean, moral and Christian values. No worries on that! I just meant you don't have to wait until the last page) I'm saying no more! Read it for yourself lol.
I enjoyed this Christian romance novel. Fun characters that were spunky and some fun witty conversations between them. It is a longer novel so not a super fast read but definitely engaging.
Some different twists and turns for main and secondary characters. Great learning moments for all the characters as they are growing in their relationship with God.
My first impression when I read this book was WOW... what a great love story! I fell in love with the characters really quickly, was enthralled with the electric chemistry between them and thoroughly enjoyed the witty bantering between the extremely likeable Lexa and Sam!
Awakening is a contemporary Christian romance novel by author JoAnn Durgin. The theme verse of this book is: Isaiah 50:4. All scripture used in this novel is from the New American Standard Bible. The setting is the summer of 1997. Lexa Clarke is on an eight week missions trip in San Antonio. Sam Lewis is the director of the missions. He epitomizes the urban, modern cowboy. Their mission is to rebuild eight homes destroyed by flooding. Lexa Clarke did not have a strong faith, unlike Sam who led a Bible study every morning. The one thing I didn’t like was the heated kiss between Lexa and Sam, who were suppose to be on a missions trip. I was sad when a mom and dad were having a heated discussion and almost hit Margarita, their young daughter . I was glad when that section was over. The novel had a lot of different plots and I think it would be better to break the plots up into more books in a series. I would rather read ten short books than one large book. About half-way through I wanted to stop reading it. It’s just a lot to take in, and takes a long time to read. My favorite quote from the novel is, “That ‘s how the Heavenly Father holds you in the grip of His love.” Sam relaxed his grip but still held her hand. “Sometimes He squeezes tight – so tight you feel like you’re suffocating from the circumstances in your life, crowding you in. But it’s in times like that when we feel the power, the strength of His love, and know how very much He cares for us, how much He loves us. God loves Sheila and Howard, too. He won’t allow anything to happen that He hasn’t preordained or allowed to happen. Maybe that will give you some small comfort tonight as you try to sleep.” My take-away from this novel: I think author JoAnn Durgin is an excellent writer, I just wish the novels were shorter, with less plots per book. I recommend this book to fans of Contemporary Christian Romance. I do wish this book would have stuck more to the missions train of thought. I give this book 4* because my interest waxed and waned as I read the novel.
Disclosure: “I bought this ebook and was under no obligation to post a review. The opinions expressed are my own.”
I am so excited to have found this new to me author! I absolutely adored this book, the characters are so true to real life, and the entire story is heartwarming! I enjoyed the struggles that each of them faced, Sam as a deeply Christian man still finds it difficult to keep from 'jumping to conclusions' and even loses his temper a time or two! Lexa faces her losses from her past and finds her way back to God. Add in the mix of other characters personalities and struggles with life and God and this makes for one powerful story of love and forgiveness! I found out that this is the first in a series, and am so looking forward to more of Sam and Lexa and their story! If any of JoAnn's books are half as good as this one I am in for a great ride!! I am excited to start reading many more books of JoAnn Durgin, thanks you so much for being such a wonderful light for God's word!!!
This is a Kindle Unlimited read, and it popped up in my recommendations from Amazon. So way to go Amazon! The biggest perk of KU is when I find a new author, and I can road test their work. When you borrow one and you don't like it, no harm no foul because it was free. BUT it feels like a surprise present to myself when I have a whole new author's catalog to raid!
Lexa is looking for more in her life when she decides to spend 8 weeks on a short term mission trip in San Antonio. She and Sam, the volunteer director for TeamWork, hit it off immediately. With her penchant for trouble, its a good thing that she also has a good sense of humor. This one made me smile, and right now that's a gift from God. This book felt like a divine appointment, and it has sweet reminders about God's willingness to keep pursuing our hearts.
I really love this story and the characters in it. I love the work they did to help people in need. I love the messages of Jesus woven throughout their day to day lives at TeamWork summer mission in Texas. Well written storyline encourages me to read more by this author.
This was definitely a little lengthy for me. The plot had some great elements, and the main characters were intriguing. I know several people who love this book. But I needed fewer words to tell the story and less physical attraction. The first half made me slow to want to read the second, which admittedly had a better pace than the first half.
I loved the story. It is believable, a beautiful Christian romance but also realistic. Even though a Christian, being human, we still struggle with the psychical stuff. When both parties are dedicated to follow Jesus like Alexa and Sam it's a beautiful thing.
