Join Brother as he waits anxiously for his approaching birthday. He wants SO many things... until he has a very strange dream. Brother learns a valuable lesson, and has a birthday to remember.
This book was written for preschool and elementary aged children. It will initiate thought and conversation about how people are more important than the things they give us.
It is playfully illustrated by Kati Burns (still a kid herself).
This is the third book in a series of adventures with Brother and Sis. The first is titled, "Room to A Children's Book about Decluttering,” and the second is titled, “Bored No A Children's Book about Creativity.”
No Emma this time. I got this book with the intention of reading it with her. However, since it's a kindle version and I couldn't just flip through it quick-like, I wanted to give it a read-through first to see if it was at an appropriate level for her.
It's not. And worse, it's not something she'd enjoy. How do I know? Because she and I are like this II. That's right, we're besties.
One of the problems with More Than Things: A Children's Book about Gifts is that its content lacks a specific target age. I'm not sure what level this is intended for. It says pre school to elementary, but that is a huge range! The difference in comprehension between a single year is often monumental. Further, a child that's too young won't understand the vocabulary and, more importantly, the lesson. On the other hand, a child that's too old for the material will absolutely balk at a book that they feel is beneath them. You might as well be reading to a dog, which would get more enjoyment out of it.
To be more specific, More Than Things has concepts about gift giving that feel appropriate to the 6-8 age range, but the text rhymes, ala Dr Seuss, at a level that would be enjoyed by 3-5 year olds, not so much by older kids.
More Than Things: A Children's Book about Gifts This book for children with hand drawn pictures is about a dream one boy has and it appears he gets everything he ever wanted. Then he wakes up and learns he does not have any of them. The birthday party where gifts are given feels better to him-normal. Some words are highlighted during the book to help the child sound them out for themselves. He did not get the material things on his birthday wish list but other more meaningful presents instead. Also has a section for parents on gift giving with many considerations taken into account. Other things are printable that will help you.
