Revealing legends and legacies, this activity book is a fun-filled review of the continent-sprawling ancient Inca culture. The activities, combined with an attractive layout, engage learners on a journey along the Inca Trail including the city of Cuzco and majestic Machu Picchu, built on a jagged ridge thousands of feet above the Urubamba River. Along the way, the beliefs, rituals, scientific advances, and unique system of languages come to life through 25 hands-on projects, such as creating Salar de Uyuni salt crystals and building a tropical cloud forest. This captivating educational tool also features unique illustrations, informative sidebars, fun-fact questions, and vocabulary that will engage learners from start to finish.
I’ll be honest with you - the thought of reading a dry history book about Machu Picchu wasn’t something I wanted to be doing on my holiday! I discovered this middle grade activity book that really covered what I wanted to know.
At 128 pages, it’s a great book for school projects or even a travel guide for children. Almost all the 25 activities can be done with little adult supervision and with materials you already have in your house. It’s divided into 8 chapters, each with words to know and great sketches/maps, as well as a timeline, glossary, index, and resources page.
Why did this adult download and read this book at sea?
Firstly, I wanted to discover the culture and geography of the lost civilization at Machu Picchu before we arrived.
Secondly, I loved the way that author Lawrence Kovacs invites readers to follow him along the Inca Trail to visit Cuzco and Machu Picchu. Along the way, he teaches, in a fun and simplistic manner, the cultural beliefs, rituals, scientific advances, and languages of this intriguing part of the world.
A brilliant book that provides a captivating and engaging look into the Inca civilisation. It is well set-out with excellent use of infographics; my only wish is that it could have been published using colour to help make it more visually appealing to children. The projects that are included are wonderful for providing ideas for kinaesthetic engagement with the ideas.
Miss 5 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.
