There's a new file in the cabinet marked DOCUMENT ZERO... A serial killer is on the loose in London. He's killed five times. One per day. His first victim is an Intelligence Officer working for GCHQ. Coincidence - or is this the work of the Special Protectorate? DS Roedean Fillet of Scotland Yard's Homicide Team is forced to work with the eccentric but brilliant Brock Jaggard of Cosmopol, a secret branch of British Intelligence. But Jaggard is quite mad and utterly exasperating. The bodies pile up daily and it's a race against time. Is there a pattern, sequence or purpose behind the strangulations apart from the lust to kill? Can Roedean's doggedness and Jaggard's savant abilities find the key to the pattern, catch the killer and stop him in time? Has there ever been a more unlikely pairing of detectives? Yes, probably, but we won't let that stop us enjoying this breathtaking, hilarious, page-turning romp through the dark underbelly of a city that has turned into one big pageant of murder...
I should begin by mentioning I read this book in two days. I think this denotes what an enticing, captivating and cleverly humorous book this is.
The unique plot line of this book, in my opinion, sets it apart from the generic thriller. The attention to small details captures the personalities of different characters excellently and gives depth to the fast pace novel. In an attempt to not give away any spoilers, my view is that the end of the book is not something a reader would foresee at the beginning. This is what makes the novel both gripping and dissimilar to the cliche thriller.
From having the pleasure to be mentored by Paul in the infancy of my legal career, his Liverpudlian wit and sarcasm is scattered all over the book. Although the novel is predominantly about a serial killer on a murder-spree around London, this book is fantastically comedic, removing the seriousness of the subject matter.
I would recommend this book to everyone and anyone, it is truly brilliant.
