With a freshly minted nine girlfriends, what’s a boy to do… except field a baseball team? Yes, it’s time for some bunt talk as the series covers all its bases. But a karaoke showdown also blows the roof off the place, or equivalent. And true beauty is found in everybody making out.
Sigh.
Look, I already had my big speech about this series, so let me just skip to the salient bit: as much as this series is way too much at times, it is also (siiiiigh) the funniest manga that I have ever read. Full stop.
Lets be clear - this is not a sharp genre parody. It’s a nonsense as hell genre parody with occasional sharp observations and a desperation to make somebody, anybody, laugh at something as often as possible.
There’s a difference, however, between a broad comedy that aims low and one that aims to cover as many potential joke options as possible and this one is all the latter (okay, all the latter and also the former, fine). It’s also the most charming harem story I’ve ever read.
While the new pages are still in the low digits, we meet Iku, whose devotion to baseball is only secondary to her love of pain (yep, we’re going there). But she’s all alone because her spirit so inspired the rest of the team so much that they all flew to the United States to train. This was the first time I burst out laughing. It would not be the last.
This baseball game has no shame, from the strangest breast joke I’ve seen in a while to a slew of idiotic puns that are the best/dumbest and the whole thing ends up hinging on nothing notable and also involved barbecue for no discernible reason.
The karaoke section is, charitably speaking, absolutely insane and showcases the least talkative member in the most unexpected way possible. There’s no way to explain how funny this is with giving away the plot, but it ends on a throwaway Laputa gag that works, even if I am not sure how.
Then we get Utsukushisugi, who is a narcissist focused on her beauty and not exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer. She also brings another unique perspective to the story, although how this could possibly last for a full hundred is beyond me (there’s a great opening for a quintuplet joke here).
Either way, she’s really fun and her competition with Nano shows how determined Rentaro is to protect and respect every single one of his giant soulmate collection.
Things get a bit weaker towards the end, but not by much. If you hate fourth-wall breaking, don’t even bother showing up. The story has basically just started throwing those breaks out like they were candy, but even those didn’t bother me.
The real masterstroke to this series is that all these random girls are not fighting one another for Rentaro’s affections, so it is markedly wholesome amidst the all the shenanigans. Yes, yes, Karane and Hikari continue to be very in love too, don’t worry.
We get some absolutely amazing multi-page spreads here too. Not because the art is amazing, but because the jokes are that good. One, where Rentaro decides to extol everybody’s virtues is incredible with how crazy and committed to the bit it is. And the other is an art style joke that I also loved.
Look, there’s an audience for this type of story and that audience is me. Even if it’s pulling dumb and dusty jokes from the annals of harem manga history, it’s still aware enough of this to just mock itself for doing so.
5 stars - a real return to form, nothing here was particularly bad and the good stuff was, depressingly, absolutely hysterical. I know it cannot possibly stay this good forever, but I do hope the inevitable dip in quality is a ways off yet.

Girlfriend number nine is sporty tomboy Iku who also is a bit of a masochist. She’ll need the ever-growing Rentaro family’s help to keep the school baseball club alive, and we see them train and play in a high-stakes match. After we see them all celebrate with a karaoke bang, the next girl to be zinged is beautiful but vain Utsukushisugi who has that snobby popular girl vibe. We learn about her harsh past with Nano involving a past beauty contest and how she coldly declined Utsuku’s friendship, but they thankfully smooth things out with their new friendship and she joins them all. It all concludes with a battle of kissy face and a funny bonus chapter. A (100%/Outstanding)

This volume was absolutely hilarious. I found myself laughing OUT LOUD several times when turning the page. I know it's absolutely ridiculous and unrealistic in so many ways, but it's so fun. I love how crazy it gets sometimes. I will be continuing. The pee stuff was weird but that's manga for you🤷🏻♀️

I really, really, really, really, really love this series (someone else had to have done this bit already, but I don't care). So, don’t go into this review hoping for something profound. It’s just a silly little harem comedy. It’s gone so far past parody at this point that it’s just pure joy. Girlfriend Count in this volume +2. They’re both great, and the arcs we get introducing them are both great. But, let’s face it, all the girlfriends in this series are great in their own way. This series also had, in my humble opinion, one of the greatest back-to-back 2page spreads in the HISTORY of manga. When you get there, you’ll understand. I truly hope the translator got paid by the word, cus otherwise… ouch. The anime got announced officially today, so I anticipate this series will be growing in popularity quite a lot.

I guess it was bound to happen at some point. The premise is becoming too unwieldy and the author is kind of forced to create collaborative scenarios where the whole cast can feasibly participate, whether it's an eating competition, a baseball team, or karaoke, but how long can he keep it up?
I really liked the first three volumes but, as more girlfriends are introduced, some characters are reduced to punchlines just to keep them relevant. At a certain point, you really only care for a few, and others (e.g. the maid and the hungry tomboy) just get lost in the background. With so many characters struggling for relevance, the series is devolving into a gag manga (which is okay but not why I first became interested).
At this point, I'm sorry to say I'm dropping the series.

This manga series is INSANITY. It has terrible plot points, but its executed in such a way that I can't help but love. The absurdness of it all is what makes this series so much fun to read. :)
