One of the great things about science fiction books is the breadth of purpose in the storytelling. There are those that are more ponderous that lead to deep moral discussions, others that are seek to be a parable of modern culture, but one of the most delightful are the fun sci-fi stories. Remix is firmly in the latter camp. It is a celebration of all fun sci-fi (some of the language especially points to other popular sci-fi pieces).

Due to this being my first experience of both Stephen Gay's writing and the Night Owl world I had ask myself a few questions; is the writing enjoyable? Is the world engaging? Are the characters worth following? And do I want to read more of this series? The answer to all of those questions is a resounding, yes. There are some short stories that feel more laborious in spite of their brevity but thankfully Remix never slips into that problem.

The story follows two main characters, Ethan Keller and Desi (both of whom are key characters in the Night Owl series), as they undertake a heist that very quickly goes belly up.

Due to the heist in space story it is inescapable to not think of other stories while reading it (Artemis by Andy Weir came to mind, not identical just minor similarities) but thankfully Remix does stand up on its own two feet. It isn't the lesser cousin of some other stories, it is a thoroughly enjoyable read that had me hooked from the opening pages.

Gay writes this 50 pages book with great fluidity, a strong grasp of his world and characters and concludes with an enjoyable ending that still leaves open for excitement to pick up other books in the series.

If you haven't checked out this short book or are on the fence I would recommend picking it up. I am extremely excited for more Night Owl after finishing this book.

"Remix" is a short story (five chapters) that's a prequel to the Night Owls series. I had read a couple of the books before I read this story, but you could definitely start with the prequel and be able to follow along.

I enjoyed the world building woven through even a short piece, and it's fun to see Ethan and Desi getting into more "everyday" trouble before things ramp up in book 1.

If you're new to the Night Owls, this will be a fun introduction. If you've read some of the books already, it will help fill in some of the backstory for you.

Loved this quick read that gives us this background on Ethan-- his scheming mind, his misfortunate youth, and his dances with the law. It's great to meet Ethan and Desi, to understand their skill and their bond.

A fun and engaging short story prequel to the Night Owl’s series. Gay’s world building, characterization, and dialogue are out of this world!
The short focuses on a heist while introducing readers to Ethan and Desi.
