When Aurelia Beswick obtains a post as the governess for Lord Ryland’s only son, she doesn’t realize she has met the earl before until she arrives at his house.
Fortunately, Lord Ryland doesn’t seem to remember her. And she must ensure he never does.
Book two in the Hearts of Harewood series, A Proper Governess is a sweet and clean Regency romance including a governess, and a widower who has turned into a recluse, and a sweet boy who brings them together.
Lord Ryland's story was so much more than I had hoped for! I loved every moment of it in this second book in the Hearts of Harewood series. After meeting Lord Ryland and seeing the good honorable gentleman that he is in book one, I was beyond excited knowing that this second book was going to be his story!!! Woot Woot!!!
I loved learning more about both his and his new governess, Aurelia's back stories. Oh my heart!!! And how they meet for the first time in the book. Swoon!!! Although, poor Aurelia has had great struggles in her home and family life which lead her to becoming a governess, she is still the prim and proper lady with such a good, loving and kind heart. It was so easy to connect with and love both of these characters. And to watch them fall in love with each other, despite their best efforts not too! Seriously, cue the swoony sighs here!!!
Add in Lord Ryland's adorable son and the many interactions between his son and him, his son and Aurelia, or all three of them together, and it just ups the swoon factor. And the sweetness of the story. I was very happily engaged during my time reading this book. I loved every moment of it. Especially when Aurelia must report to Lord Ryland's study to discuss her lesson plans. ;-) Poor Lord Ryland is smitten and doesn't know what to do about it. Hee Hee!!!
The whole cast of characters were wonderful and well developed. And now, just as much as I was anticipating Lord Ryland's book, I'm feeling that way for the next book which will be about his stepsister. Ohhhh, Kasey Stockton has wonderfully laid the groundwork for that one within this book. I loved how we had POVs for Lord Ryland, Hazel AND Ruth (his stepsister)!!! Read it and fall in love with these characters and their sweet stories!!!
Content: Sweet and Wholesome. Some kisses. Some talk of the death of a spouse/parent. Talk of abandonment, stealing and prison.
I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
'Aurelia vowed to be the most proper governess Lord Ryland could dream of employing. She would not give him any reason to find her less than adequate.'
Social class differences, off-limits romance, forced proximity, he falls first...HERE FOR ALL OF THIS!
Kasey never ceases to amaze me and the stories she brings to life. I absolutely LOVED this book. It's fun, has great banter, swoony romance and gives me all of the happy sighs while adding depth and emotional balance!
If you like historical romance you should definitely be picking this one up! While this is book 2 in the Hearts of Harewood series it can absolutely be read as a stand alone. I also highly recommend book 1 as well!
A Proper Governess will be available September 25, 2024!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Content/Trigger: change in social status, parent abandonment, romance-kisses only.
“‘Can you stand?’ Not well, she imagined. Was she not already a melted puddle on the earthy forest floor? He’d only meant to be kind and save her from falling, but Ryland had achieved far more than that. He had made her feel things again.”
Melted? Yes! I will attest that I definitely melted with every veiled and exposed interaction between this duo. I absolutely adored Lord Ryland’s story! He’s such an amazing gentleman and I was so excited to get the full scope of his background and current situation. I’m always a sucker for a single dad trope and this one hit all the marks, especially with his sweet little son.
The new governess, Aurelia, arrives with baggage full of secrets, but her proper and capable ways soon charm everyone around her, and she’s such a beautiful character. The culmination of this book presented such a fantastic plot, with ideal characters, that leaves room for future books in the Hearts of Harewood series. Kasey Stockton fulfilled my every wish with this lovely story and this one is sure to be gobbled up by historical romance lovers.
Content: mild romance

“Can a governess not carry a pistol?” Cool autumn wind brushed through the trees, dropping leaves over the drive and crinkling along the branches. In the last thirty minutes, she had lied to him, waved around a gun, and nearly led him into a bout of fisticuffs with a drunk farmer. But it would snow indoors before Aurelia brought any of these things to his attention. 📚☕
Book Two in Hearts of Harewood series
I did not read book #1 in this series first! Very unusual for me but I was searching for new Regency author with a story set in Autumn (for the ‘Clean & Cozy reads for November’ video I’m currently working on).
📚 a bit of suspense from the start 📚 mistaken identity 📚 wealthy Earl recluse
I went into this book without having read book one, but I think it held up well as a standalone. I would describe this as a comfort regency read. The characters were delightfully heartwarming and who doesn’t love a sweet romance about a man in position falling for his governess. I think the entire world saw and fell in love with this trope in The Sound of Music. It’s a timeless tale that doesn’t seem to lose its whimsy and appeal. It’s easy to root for a relationship like this one. The widowed earl’s sweet little boy, Edmund, will immediately win over your heart. Honestly, he stole the show at times and I just adored his character.
This wasn’t simply a rags to riches story – this was more of a riches, to rags and back to riches scenario. Aurelia Beswick has no choice but to seek a governess position as she tries to reshape a life that has been muddied with secrets and family scandal. Lord Ryland, her new employer, has a connection to this muddled past of hers, but he doesn’t seem to realize it. Aurelia is hopeful to hold the truth close to her heart so that others won’t discover the family secrets that could easily scar her future. She never expected romance to sweep her off her feet and holding secrets becomes increasingly difficult.
Highly recommended for all fans of historical romance. An easy and heartwarming read that includes all the ingredients of a perfect regency.

This one was much better than the first one! The cover is so pretty! I always enjoy reading about governess! Aurelia was lovely! She was a great character and her heart for Edmund was so sweet! Edmund was adorable and sounded like a fun kid to look after. Ryland was different in this book than the first one, but I still liked him. He seemed to grow as a person. I thought he and Aurelia worked well together and it was sweet seeing them fall in love. I did get annoyed with them slightly at a certain part, but it was resolved quickly. I am looking forward to reading the next one in this series!
I really enjoyed the story of Aurelia and Ryland. They are both so kind and loving. They are a perfect match.
I love how these stories are not just romance but lots of other things thrown in as well. Lots of mystery, secrets and even secret doorways.
The writing is awesome keeping me engaged from the very beginning. If you are looking for a clean sweet read this is it. I love Kasey’s sense of humor. Her books always include those awkward situations that make me laugh. She’s a talented writer with a great imagination.
A lovely continuation of the Hearts of Harewood series! I had so much fun returning to this world and to read about these lovely characters. Aurelia was so sweet and genuine. She had some things that weighed her down and secrets she was keeping, but she truly wanted to do well in her position and make a home for herself. Her POV was also a lovely way to see the town and some of the old characters as well! I loved how she interacted with Edward. She was so patient and kind. Aurelia also found companionship with the others in the house. Rynland was lovely. I loved his care for his family. He was still in mourning in many ways and was forced to face new experiences as Aurelia interrupted his life. He took his role and responsibilities seriously, yet most of all wanted to take care of his son. It was so sweet to see him and Aurelia support one another. They found companionship and understanding in one another. It was a sweet story that unfolded relatively gently. I appreciated the pace and felt like I understood the characters’ choices. I loved seeing so many of the side characters and I am hopeful to see more of their stories! This is a regency romance with only kissing.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, I was not required to write a positive review.
This book has me swept away into the story from page one. 🥰 I adored the first one, but this one was just beautiful.
Ryland was introduced in book 1, To Forge Her Fate, and you learn his background story and his struggles, so this one just kinda picks up where that left off. I really admired Ryland right away, he's the kind of man that I think any girl would want in their life. 😅 He's so caring towards everyone, putting everyone else first, and trying to heal from losing his first wife.
Amelia is also struggling, from the abandonment of her family, and the loss of her former life, being in society. I always love a book where she becomes a governess, it always gives me Jane Eyre vibes, and this one was no exception. 🥰 Her adoration and devotion to Edmund was probably my favorite part about this book, she helped him through his nightmares, and earned his trust; it was all just so sweet. 🩷
This is book 2 in Kasey Stockton's series, Hearts of Harewood, and can be read as a standalone, but I recommend reading book 1 first. If you enjoy clean, closed door regency romance with sweet romance, I highly recommend! 🩷
I really enjoyed this read. Maybe it’s a phase but I can only stand heavy content so long before I get disenchanted. Because of the way my mind works, I actually learn quite a bit from these light hearted books. Kasey Stockton is one of my favorite authors and her books are definitely a go to when everything else is just so darn heavy.
I had a little break between the first book and second book so it took me a minute to remember where everyone was in the story line. The main characters are Aurelia (Edmund’s governess), Lord Ryland (Ruth’s brother who lost his wife years back but he never quite recovered) and Ruth (Lord Ryland’s sister who has an exceptionally long list of rules of qualifications for any man to court her.) Now, REALLY, it’s about its about Aurelia coming back from her fall in society and Lord Ryland being open to love again.
Rather than making my reviews about quality of writing and the sequencing of the story, I prefer to write about how I enjoyed it because ultimately, that’s why I read it. Kasey Stockton has an easy way of writing that makes it so you are thinking while you read. And this one got me thinking about how kids are educated and what has changed over the years and culturally. Edmund is a sweet boy that has a hard time sitting down to do anything and Aurelia gets him to sit and focus as he observes the squirrel. I like how the adaptations were shown but also the intentionality. I loved that little nugget that was put in there.
Kasey Stockton writes the best historical romances. ‘A Proper Governess’ is the second book in the Hearts of Harewood series. I have been looking forward to Lord Ryland’s story since we met him in the previous book. This book exceeded all my expectations. The romance in this was sweet, but packed the heat. It was definitely slow-burn and it paid off in the end. Their banter and those kisses were perfection 🔥 Most of the scenes with Andrew and Aurelia had me grinning like an idiot. Aurelia was just the woman Edmund and Andrew needed, and they were exactly what she needed. There were so many things to love about this book. Watching them become a family was one of my favorite things. I wasn’t a huge fan of Ruth at the beginning of the book, but she grew on me. I cannot wait to see her break all her rules in the next book!
*I was given a complimentary eARC with no expectations of a favorable review.
An enjoyable storyline for the third book. Certain aspects of the characters development felt rushed to me. I feel she could’ve spent more time on developing the relationship and letting it unfold more between the two main characters, but overall I enjoyed the premise and plot.
Oh my goodness I loved this couple. Kasey had me falling in love with both of these two main characters and hoping they could overcome their differences.
This book had some of my favorite elements. Social class differences, off-limits relationship, hidden secrets, “if you only knew the real me”, forced proximity, and absolutely great banter.
The meet cute between Aurelia and Lord Ryland made me smile so big.
Book 1 made me love Ryland and I was so excited to be able to read his story! A brooding widowed recluse with a heart for his family?? What more could you want? That being said, this is book 2, but can be read as a stand alone.
I loved Aurelia from the beginning. She’s resilient, humble, smart, and super kind to Ryland’s son. I loved watching her find her worth and decide to fight for herself and what she wants.
This book had so much chemistry. The corridor!! I will just let you find out what I’m talking about.
I love Ruth and as soon as I wanted to know a little more about her, there was a chapter with more. But boy was I left wanting more. I can’t wait for her book!!
“As fortune would have it, I’ve already spun a protective story for you. For that, I must also heartily apologize. It was a liberty I had no right to take.” She smoothed back her blonde hair. “I cannot fault you for it when it was so utterly effective.” “All the same, it was a moment of insanity. I assure you, I do not typically go around claiming strangers as wives.” “A sister would have accomplished the same thing.” “Next time I attempt to rescue a damsel, I will take that under advisement.”
This fantastic story has forbidden love, forced proximity, and he falls first. It’s full of witty banter, chemistry, family, friends and a few secrets.
Aurelia is strong, determined, and caring. I loved her bravery in finding her way after her family’s fall and abandonment. I loved little Edmund and his quick attachment to Aurelia. Some of my favorite moments are between Edmund and Aurelia, Edmund and Ryland, or all three of them! Aurelia’s quick friendship with Ruth, Tilly, and Eliza was delightful. Ryland! I was so happy to read Ryland’s story and see the healing he found and his coming to love again! Ryland is witty, charming even when he’s not trying, and caring. I loved that he didn’t worry about society’s opinions and chose his friends for who they were. He fell so hard for Aurelia! I loved seeing their love blossom. Oh the corridor scene!! 🫠
These is book 2 in the series. It can be enjoyed as a standalone but I recommend book 1 too. I cannot wait to read Ruth’s story to see if her rules stand.
A few more quotes: “Books were my saving grace. It is easier to forget how other people treat you or the trials you face when you can momentarily leave this world and slip into an imaginary one.”
“Why are you not participating?” “I cannot lift a sword to you.” She scoffed. “This was your doing.” “Yes, but I did not consider that I would have to . . .” He gestured wildly at her with his hand, his dark eyes on her. “You know.” “Hit me?” He cringed. “Precisely.”
“This path is not without its challenges. I am willing to traverse it. You are worth it to me. But you need to decide if it is something you could face.” She drew in a shaky breath. “Am I strong enough?” “I believe you are.”
Aurelia had been in love with Lord Ryland since the fist time they met at a ball in London. Unfortunately he married someone else and life got hard for Aurelia in the years that followed. So hard that she finds herself in a position where she needs to seek out employment to survive. After reaching out to her former governess she is offered a job as a governess for a young boy. However once she arrives she realizes that Lord Ryland is not only her new employer but he is also a widower.
Lord Ryland somehow ended up with a young attractive governess who reminds him entirely too much of his late wife and that just will not do. But how can he just cast her out when she has no where else to go and especially when she has such a way with his son.
I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it, if you haven’t read the first book in this series you should check it out too. I hope Ruth’s story is next!
Ohh, I read this in 24 hours! Such a clean and lovely romance. It really felt like a palate cleanser. This was my first book by this author and it’s definitely my style.
Aurelia finds herself fallen from grace after her brother is sent to prison and her parents flee to Ireland due to bankruptcy caused by her father’s and brother’s gambling habits. She accepts a position as governess in Lord Rayland’s house where she cares for his son little Edmund. Lord Rayland is a widower who is intrigued by Aurelia from the start, partly because she physically resembles his late wife. Slowly but steadily they get to know each other and fall in love.
I absolutely loved these two as well as all the secondary characters. Reading this felt like watching Pride and Prejudice, my all-time favorite movie, and I had such a great time with it.
Wonderful! This is what I love about Proper/Regency Romance and Historical Fiction. Beautifully written, I was completely immersed in the Hearts of Harewood. With vivid characters, witty dialogue, and kisses dreams are made of, the author created a masterpiece of storytelling!
A Proper Governess by Kasey Stockton exceeded my expectations, engaging my interest and warming my heart from beginning to end. Stockton crafts a lovely Regency romance that remains sweet and sincere—never cheesy, and refreshingly unpredictable.
The protagonist, Aurelia Beswick, shines as a woman of integrity and strength, determined to define her character apart from her brother’s troubled past and present. Her love and soft nurturing nature as a governess speaks louder than her status or family history. Lord Ryland, too, grows meaningfully throughout the story, challenging his own prejudices and choosing to see Aurelia beyond her family ties and his past associations.
Stockton beautifully weaves heartfelt themes throughout this tale—such as looking beyond status and reputation, embracing family support, and honoring the enduring nature of love. One particularly touching message is how love can expand even in the aftermath of loss. The story gently reminds us that it’s possible to carry the love we once had while making room for new love in our hearts.
Overall, A Proper Governess deserves 4.5 stars in my eyes—a clean and captivating romance with emotional depth and timeless truths.
I must confess that I skipped the 1st book of this series because I just couldn't get into it. Happily, it was not at all necessary for book 2.
It's what I call "a gentle read" - the suspenseful elements weren't overly long & the conflicts aren't overly prolonged.
The characters are easy to care about & sympathize with. And refreshingly, while the conflicts are stereotypical, they don't follow the stereotypical resolutions
I'll definitely be picking this up when it's available as an audiobook!
Absolutely LOVED this book! I was so excited to get Ryland’s story after getting little glimpses of his thoughts in the previous book and he far exceeded expectations! He quickly has become one of my favorite lead male characters. And Aurelia! She was wonderful! I absolutely adored these two and their sweet love story.
Rylan has been a widower for a few years and while he has started to come out of his shell and heal from his wife’s death, he still has heartache to contend with. Especially after he rescues a woman that reminds him of his late wife from a public inn. This is painful of course but then he finds out that this woman is on her way to his estate, to be the governess to his son! Can he live in the same house as someone that brings back such painful memories?
Aurelia has been handed one blow after another. Family financial ruin, her parents abandoning her, and a brother being thrown into prison. Now she is left by herself and has gotten the position as governess for an Earl. When she meets the Earl she not only recognizes him from her first season but knows he is the exact person her brother had tormented during school. Does she reveal herself and come clean? Will she be dismissed without being given a chance?
Ryland and Aurelia spend a lot of time together and it becomes quickly apparent that there is a lot of attraction on both sides. There are obstacles to overcome and secrets that come to light. I love that family and friends are more important than pleasing the masses. As was the case in the first book, it doesn’t matter your social standing and I loved that Ryland and Aurelia cared more about the people around them than what society dictated. They got through the difficulties of a relationship together and the end result was so sweet! I loved this story and I can’t wait to come back to Harewood for more!
I received an advanced copy of this book from the author. I was not required to leave a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
With few choices open to her after her family scandal, Aurelia accepts a position as a governess. She doesn't realize until too late that her charge is the son of Lord Ryland, who doesn't seem to remember her but if he ever realizes who her relations are, he will certainly send Aurelia on her way.
As she tries to keep her identity a secret, Aurelia establishes a strong connection with young Edmund...and cannot help her growing attraction to Lord Ryland though a connection between them is impossible.
Lord Ryland is still grieving his late wife but as he gets to know his son's new governess, realizes that he was wrong to think his heart would never love again.
What you'll love: Regency era multiple pov governess FMC widower forced proximity he falls first forbidden/off-limits romance the picnic the chemistry and tension witty banter Edmund the corridor hidden secrets the perfectly perfect ending
Oh my stars, this story was soo romantic! Ryland is the quintessential knight in shining armor and the way he treats Aurelia should be an example to fictional men everywhere! So much wit and banter and chemistry between the two of them, and don't even get me started on that corridor scene!!
I loved that there was depth to the story beyond the romance with Aurelia's background and family and with Ryland's grief. These story lines added an extra layer to the story and helped me connect to the characters. There is just SO much to love about this book and I fell in love with it all!!
This is the second book and can be enjoyed as a standalone, but book 1 was fantastic as well so plan on reading both of them! I am hoping (fingers crossed!) that Ruth's story is next but whatever the next book is, you can bet I will be reading it!!
I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.
